Meanwhile, the people of Peremabiri have appealed to all tiers of government to prevail on the SPDC to immediately embark of a clean up exercise at the oil spill site.

NAN reports that the leak from the Diebu Creek Flow station, operated by SPDC in Peremabiri, discharged a yet-to-be ascertained volume of crude oil to adjourning areas of the community and the Nun River.

Mr Alagoa Morris, Programme Manager, Environmental Right Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), in a reaction said the oil leak had polluted the ecosystem.

He said that the resultant pollution from the oil spill has adversely affected the predominantly farming and fishing settlements along the banks of River Nun.

Morris, who is also the Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa Governor on Environment, commended the peaceful disposition of the victims.

He urged the regulatory agencies to ensure that SPDC immediately carries out the required clean up process to save indigenes of Peremabiri Community from economic and health challenges.

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the economy, Mr Wale Edun, says after China and India, Nigeria is the largest economy that investors are running after.

Edun said this in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Marrakech, Morocco, on the sidelines of the ongoing 2023 World Bank/International Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings.

He, however, advised that the country had to be ready to attract such investments, and to turn initial interest into investment in Agriculture, solid minerals, industry, manufacturing and import substitution.

According to the minister, these are the areas spurring investors’ interest in coming to Nigeria and investing by Foreign Direct Investment.

“Such investors also include those that are already in Nigeria.

“Our wish is to grow the Nigerian economy, reduce poverty, and make life better for all Nigerians. That is the determination of President Bola Tinubu and members of his administration.

“We are laying the groundwork for achieving that by making the tough decisions,” he said.

He said that he was at the World Bank/IMF meetings in Marrakech to get a sense of what the whole world thought of Nigeria.

He said that the reaction so far had been positive, adding that Nigeria had been appointed to chair the African Governors’ Forum of the World Bank.

“The opportunity is now there to unite the African continent, the finance ministers of Africa, the economic leaders and representatives of governments.

“They should unite and argue for a fair and just energy transition, for instance.

“Nigeria has the opportunity now as the chairman of the African Governors’ Forum to unite the continent to enable African countries speak with one voice and get a better deal for Africa,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

98% of children with diphtheria in 19 states not immunised – Minister

The Coordinating Ministry of Health and Social Welfare says 98 per cent of unvaccinated children were infected with diphtheria in 19 states.

The Minister, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, made the disclosure at the Northern Traditional Leaders’ Committee on Primary Health Care Service Delivery (NTLC) Quarterly Review Meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

The meeting was organised by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NTLC meeting is a platform for the NPHCDA and its partners to engage traditional leaders on their roles and responsibilities toward improving primary healthcare delivery in their communities.

The minister called for the implementation of a rapid vaccination campaign.

He said that the 19 states must come together to save the lives of vulnerable children.

Pate said that the ministry and other stakeholders had come together to aggressively tackle the diphtheria challenge that had persisted for months.

He said that efforts were being made to ensure that the challenge would not linger.

“The key focus of these collaborative efforts is to improve local governance and enhance delivery of essential services.

“This involves including all relevant stakeholders in the conversation, not just the Federal Government.

“Leaders at all levels, including your highnesses and representatives from the private sector, are actively working together to address the pressing diphtheria issue that affects our people,” he said.

The minister said that a major milestone was the upcoming launch of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in Nigeria later in October.

“This vaccine not only aims to prevent cervical cancer in the years to come, but also emphasises the importance of engaging our royal fathers and strengthening the health system to ensure efficient delivery of vaccines.

“It acknowledges that different population segments require different approaches with childhood vaccination programmes catering for younger age groups, and COVID-19 vaccinations targeting adults,” he said.

He said that technical experts involved in the efforts had reassured the country of the safety and effectiveness of the HPV vaccine.

“Their expertise and responses to various questions have instilled confidence in recommending its utilisation to protect our girls and prevent future health complications,” he said.

He said that the collaborative approach taken by state governments and other stakeholders set an example not only within the sub-region but also for all in the wider space.

“The unity and evidence-based decision-making exhibited by all members involved in this venture highlight the commitment to address health challenges and protect the well-being of all Nigerians.

“This united front signifies a significant step forward in addressing the ongoing health challenge and paves the way for a more coordinated and effective response.

“With the combined efforts of state governments, other stakeholders and technical experts, there is optimism that this collaborative approach will yield positive outcomes and bring about much-needed solutions to improve public health,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to traditional leaders across the country for longstanding support of public health initiatives.

Pate praised their unwavering commitment to the well-being of the people and credited them with the successful fight against wild poliovirus in Nigeria.

He said that Nigeria’s remarkable progress in polio eradication had far-reaching implications.

“The fact that we don’t have children paralysed by wild poliovirus now is thanks to your leadership and the commitment of more than 100,000 traditional leaders,” he said.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, appealed to Nigerians to live in peace for the unity of the country.

“I am calling on all Nigerians to imbibe and embrace the culture and spirit of living in peace irrespective of tribal or regional differences,” he said.

Abubakar also called on the world to pray for Palestinians.

He said that the world needed to live in peace with a common goal of purposeful development.

The Chairman of NTLC, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, said that the meeting was significant as it provided an opportunity to assess progress, identify areas for improvement, and chart a course for the future.

“The healthcare sector faces complex challenges, but with collective efforts and strategic partnerships, it is believed that these challenges can be overcome, leading to a healthier and more prosperous nation.

“The NPHCDA management and partners have been instrumental in supporting and executing numerous vaccination-related activities during this period, including three major consultation meetings in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kaduna states,” he said.

Mera said that the discussions and deliberations of the meeting were expected to be fruitful and result in concrete actions that would further enhance the delivery of services by primary health centres in the northern region.

“It is a chance to share experiences, exchange knowledge and develop innovative solutions that will have a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the people,” he said.

He called for commitment to improving healthcare services, recognition of challenges and determination to find solutions through collaboration and strategic planning. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

The Esu-Karu, Luka Panya and security agents, on Wednesday warned residents of Karu, in Nasarawa State against taking laws into their hands (jungle justice).

Panya said this at a meeting with security agents, traditional rulers, community, religious, motorcycle and tricycle leaders, following the recent bizarre story of stolen genitals.

He said that in the last three weeks, there had been incidents of stolen genitals around Karu, Masaka, Ado, New Nyanya and the latest in sharp Corner, where the suspect and his car were burnt.

According to him, it is my duty to ensure that my subjects are safe because the essence of leadership is to ensure that the community is peaceful and attain required development.

“We have a duty to talk to our people so we know how to manage these issues of stolen genitals, so we don’t take laws into our hands.

“I urge every representative, especially the chairman of motorcycle/tricycle riders association to pass the message to their people.

“There is no society that is free of crime, but there are ways to handle these through security agencies, not jungle justice, because anybody can be affected,’’ the Esu said.

In his contribution, Prince Jatau, a security agent called for sensitisation of the rural populace.

Jatau warned that no act of jungle justice would be tolerated any longer in the community.

He said that Karu was a sensitive town and close to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and therefore, expressed his fears that if the present situation was not well managed, could escalate to religious or ethnic crises.

Jatau advised the people to be careful in raising false alarm as anyone seen at the scene where jungle justice was being carried out, would be charged to court too.

Similarly, Francis Obigwa, the Police Area Commander in charge of Karu, said that the issue of alleged stolen genitals, which had been proven to be untrue medically, was becoming overwhelming

According to Obigwa, there has been ongoing arrests as regards the case and both the suspect and victims will be charged to court.

He said that some persons were now capitalising on the trending issue to commit other manner of crimes, adding that the police was always on alert to deal with such individuals.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Motorcycle/Tricycle Riders Association, Bahago Na’Allah, had assured the Esu and the security agents that the association was working toward ensuring that its members conducted themselves in an orderly manner by not taking the law into their hands. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
