The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has commended residents of the territory for their patience, following the inconveniences the ongoing projects across the FCT have caused.

Wike gave the commendation in Abuja on Wednesday, after he inspected some ongoing projects in the territory.

“I commend all of you for your support and the residents of Abuja, who have been making some sacrifices.

“Some roads have been diverted while some areas are experiencing huge traffic due to the ongoing road projects across the city,” he said.

He promised that some of the projects would be delivered in May, to celebrate President Bola Tinubu one year in office.

“Where we are now is Goodluck Jonathan Highway, which is being completed and going to be part of the roads that we believed, will be commissioned in May.

“We have spotted some areas where we think the contractor, Salini, should make some adjustments. Overall, it will be completed and in one or two weeks the streetlights will be on.

“We also went to Guzape Lot II, where the roads infrastructure being provided will also be completed and before May ending, the project will be handed over to us by Gilmor,” he said.

The minister also inspected road projects in Diplomatic Zone, Guzape, though not part of the project for inauguration in May, according to the minister, but would be completed in the next one and half year, if funds were released.

He assured residents that the FCT Administration would make the funds available to ensure its completion.

“Generally, I think we are doing well,” the minister added.

On the road resurfacing projects in Asokoro, being handled by Julius Berger, the minister assured residents that all road resurfacing projects would be completed before may.

He added, “even though we are not inviting Mr President to commission them, but let the world know that Abuja is wearing a new look.”

The minister also thanked Tinubu for signing the N1.28 trillion FCT 2024 appropriations into law, adding that the development would enable the FCT Administration to begin procurement processes.

“What you will see will be a revolution in terms of infrastructure. With this budget, a lot of things will be done, not just on roads, but also in health and education sectors,” he said.

Wike urged residents to commend the government where it made improvements rather than condemnation all the time.

“There are those who will never be happy in their lives. They are sadists. If anybody said that there is no improvement in streetlight, he is a sadist.

“We are trying to make some repairs of those that have been vandalised which is not easy.

“Don’t bother about sadists, there is nothing we can do about them,” the minister said. (NAN)

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has expressed joy that President Bola Tinubu’s promise to transform Abuja is turning out successful.

Wike stated this in Abuja on Saturday, after inspecting six ongoing projects across the territory.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project sites included the Southern Parkway, from Christian Centre to Ring Road I, being handled by Setraco and Vice President’s Resident being handled by Julius Berger.

Other projects visited were B6 and B12, Independence Avenue, also handled by Julius Berger, Wuye Engineering Infrastructure, being handled by Arab Contractors and N-20 Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway in Jahi District, being handled by Gilmor.

The minister also inspected the Outer Southern Expressway from Villa Roundabout to Ring Road I, being handled by CGC.

“So, for us we are happy with what we have seen, and we thanked God that the “Renewed Hope” agenda is working.

“Nigerians can see that the President has done well and the promise he has made to transform Abuja is turning out successful and there is no need to doubt,” he said.

The minister identified nonfulfillment of promises by politicians as a major problem, adding that such actions make the electorate lose confidence.

He, however, said that when politicians make promises and fulfill them, it gives people hope and makes them happy.

He commended Tinubu for the support, adding that the contractors have attested to the fact that funding was not a problem.

“We went to Southern Parkway being handled by Setraco and the contractor has reaffirmed that the project would be handed over to us in the first week of May.

“Then we went to VP’s Resident, being handled by Julius Berger and they said they have done not less than 90 per cent. That also, by the grace of God, will be handed over to us by May.

“We went to B6 and B12, Independence Avenue in Central Area, also being handled by Julius Berger, and they are quite confident that they are going to hand over the project in May,” he said.

The minister said the inspection tour took them to Wuye District Engineering Infrastructure, being handled by Arab Contractors, adding that they were 95 per cent ready and they made a commitment that it would soon be handed over.

“Then we went to N-20 Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway in Jahi District, which is being done by Gilmore. I can see the level of work and I believe that by the second week of May, God willing, they will also hand over the project.

“We are here now at Outer Southern Expressway, which is being done by CGC, and we have seen the level of work,” the minister said.

Wike said that the essence of going to project sites was to see whether the contractors were delivering the project according to design and according to contract terms.

He reiterated his promise that no project would be abandoned, adding that no project would be awarded without the money to fund it.

The minister disclosed that he would meet all the contractors on Tuesday to finalise the readiness to complete ongoing projects.

He added that he would continue the project inspection on Wednesday to see the level of preparation for handing over of the projects in May.

On why he decided to inspect the project during Easter break, the minister said: “Easter does not mean that you will not work; Easter does not mean that you will not eat.

“What Easter portrays is the unity for which Christ stands for all of us, and the need to preach for peace among we Nigerians,” he noted.  (NAN)

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the FCT Administration has embarked on a journey of transformation in the capital territory.

Wike, who stated this in his Easter message to residents of FCT, in Abuja on Saturday, urged the residents to contribute to the realisation of the vision for better Nigeria.

He explained that the efforts to transform the FCT was driven by a renewed sense of hope and optimism, under the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“As residents of the FCT, let us keep faith with President Tinubu and his administration, and let us actively contribute to the realisation of his vision for a better Nigeria.

“On our part, the FCT Administration remains deeply committed to ensuring the welfare and well-being of all residents.

“We are working tirelessly to address the various challenges facing the Territory, from security to infrastructure development and education as well as healthcare provision.

“Many of our interventions, as many will attest to, are already yielding the desired results.

“However, I recognise that true progress can only be achieved through collective effort and collaboration,” he said.

He called on residents to join hands with the government in its quest for progress and development, towards building a brighter future for the current generation and the generation to come.

He also urged residents to remember the true essence of Easter celebration and embodied the spirit of sacrifice, compassion, and renewal in all that we do.

“In the story of Easter, we find the ultimate symbol of sacrifice in the selfless act of Jesus Christ, who laid down his life for the redemption of humanity.

“Let us, therefore, reach out to those in need, to offer a helping hand to the less fortunate, and spread kindness and goodwill wherever we go.

“In the Federal Capital Territory, we are blessed with a diverse and vibrant community that embodies the spirit of unity in diversity.

“Regardless of our differences in culture, religion, or background, we are bound together by the shared values of tolerance and respect for each other.

“This Easter, let us therefore celebrate our diversity as a source of strength and let us reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and harmonious society for all,” Wike said.

The minister also called on residents to celebrate responsibly and obey all extant rules and regulations, especially on environmental sanitation and traffic while also being security conscious. (NAN)

FCTA assures 2024 intending pilgrims hitch-free exercise

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has assured 2024 intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia of a hitch-free exercise.

The FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, gave the assurance at a one-day seminar for officials and intending pilgrims, at the permanent Hajj camp, Bassan Jiwa, in Abuja on Saturday.

Mahmoud, who was represented by her Chief of Staff, Dr Abdullahi Isah, said that the administration was proactive in ensuring that all intending pilgrims complied with relevant policies to participate in the spiritual journey.

This, she said, was in spite of the challenges imposed by new policies introduced by Saudi Arabia and relevant authorities for the 2024 exercise.

To achieve this, the minister said that the administration introduced the seminar aimed at educating the officials and intending pilgrims about the possible challenges of the Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

This, according to her, attest to the seriousness of the administration’s desire towards recording more successes in the exercise.

“It is the conviction of the current administration that the pilgrimage to the holy land is a journey of a lifetime which every Muslim with all the means is enjoined to partake.

“The present administration remained committed in doing everything possible to ensure that FCT contingent gets the best treatment compared to any other state of the federation or even the world in all ramifications,” she said.

Mahmoud said that the FCT Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board had begun implementation of strategies to actualise the success of this important religious obligation.

She identified some of the strategies as orientation and education of intending pilgrims, radio enlightenment programmes, and medical screening.

Others, according to the minister, are inoculations and other programmes organised to address possible obstacles that may hinder the success of the Hajj operation.

“I am, therefore, convinced that with the commitment of the entire officials, coupled with full-fledged conduct of our intending pilgrims both at home and in the holy land.

“This year’s Hajj operation, in spite of all possible challenges, would by the grace of Allah, be rated higher than the previous ones,” the minister said.

The Director, FCT Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Malam Abubakar Evuti, said that the board had conducted two phases of education and orientation exercises, adding that the radio enlightenment programme would commence after fasting.

Evuti added that the board registered low turnout of intending pilgrims for the 2024 exercise due to the high cost of hajj fares.

He, however, said that the board would continue with its line of activities in accordance with the efforts by the FCT administration.

This, he said, would ensure optimum service delivery, so that the intending pilgrims would attend Hajj Mabrur. (NAN)

Kuriga school children: Publisher commends Gov Sani, hits critics

Kuriga school children: Publisher commends Gov Sani, hits critics

Mr Victor Bobai, Director, Privilege Magazine and Communications Nig. Ltd, has commended Kaduna Governor Uba Sani over the heroic efforts that ensured the release of abducted Kuriga school children.

Bobai told newsmen on Friday in Kaduna that the governor’s efforts had further confirmed him as a great leader.

“He proved he is a great leader that has his people at heart.

“Ever since the school children were abducted, he did not rest until they were freed. That is the mark of a good leader,” he said.

Bobai craved support for the governor, and cautioned critics and political rivals against politicising the incident.

“Rescuing the school children is a commendable feat, but some people are more interested in making political capital out of it.

“Some politicians are hurling some unhealthy insinuations around this great feat just out of jealousy. This is not good,” he said.

He cautioned against such negative tendencies, saying that they were capable of discouraging leaders from putting in their best for the populace.

He particularly decried the use of the social media to throw negative sentiments against the governor that had demonstrated deep love for the people.

Bobai emphasised the need for unity and support towards the governor’s positive endeavours, vowing to expose those working against the progress of Kaduna State.

He said that the negative tendencies were disappointing, especially when they come from people from whom society expects so much.

“It is not good to criticise leaders just for the fun of it. Much as such criticisms could be useful, we must commend leaders when they do well.

“Such open disregard and contempt for great achievements could be disheartening. Every right-thinking politician knows when to play politics and when to look at issues fairly,” he said.

Highlighting the united front that ensured the release of the school children, Bobai questioned the motives of those individuals who chose to undermine the governor’s achievements.

He stressed the importance of unity and support in times like this, urging the people to stand together against the enemies of the state.

“Now, more than ever, we need to be united and support our governor. It is evident that there are forces at play who are working against the progress of our state for their selfish interests.

“We cannot allow this to continue,” Bobai said.

Bobai called on the people to rise above petty politics and focus on the greater good that the Sani administration was striving to achieve.

He urged the citizens to rally behind the governor’s initiatives and expose those who are sponsoring evil acts against the state.

“We should not let politics overshadow the great things that are being done. Governor Sani has shown what true leadership is, it is our duty to support and stand by him,” Bobai stated.

Highlighting the criticisms against Sani, he said that some people had been asking him to disclose the amount of money paid as ransom to rescue children.

“I find this odd because what is important is the fact that the children had been rescued and reunited with their families.

“Another absurd claim is that Sani is paying the bandits more money, enabling them to acquire more weapons and engage in further criminal activities.

“These false accusations aim to tarnish the governor’s reputation and divert attention from his achievements.

“It is crucial not to fall prey to baseless narratives that have no factual basis.

“Critics have also questioned why the Kuriga school children were prioritised for rescue. I see that as unfair because every circumstance is unique and rescue missions have their own challenges.

“Some have also argued that the Senator representing Kaduna Central was more instrumental in the rescue efforts. I find that awkward because such collaborations are usually necessary for every undertaking to succeed.

“The aim should be to celebrate the successful rescue rather than seeking to diminish the role of any individual involved,” he said.

Bobai urged Sani to remain focused and lead Kaduna State to greatness by building on what he had started.

He commended President Bola Tinubu and the service chiefs led by Gen. Chris Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, for the efforts toward making Nigeria safe for all. (NAN)

“EOD personnel have also been deployed to strategic locations, particularly worship and recreational centres,” he said.

The secretary added that other security agencies such as the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, equally deployed their  human and material assets to strategic locations.

This, according to him, will ensure  protection of national assets and critical infrastructure during the Easter celebration and beyond.

The National Assembly has assured the Ministry of Works of adequate budgetary provision for the completion of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway which has a contract sum of N1.067 trillion

The Chairman, joint National Assembly Committee on Works, Sen. Barinada Mpigi, gave the assurance when he led members of the committee on Works on oversight visits to some selected federal highway projects in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Coastal Highway is an interstate highway that is proposed to traverse about nine states along the coastal shoreline of the country.

The 750km highway, handled by Hitech Construction Africa Ltd., will start from Lagos and terminate in Cross River, with a spur to the north central part of Nigeria.

Mpigi, who expressed the National Assembly’s support for speedy completion of the work, appreciated the level of work done so far.

“The coastal road is real and is life and I can testify that the ministry is doing the right thing. And with the expectant period, it is achievable, he said.

On his part, Chairman House Committee on Works, Rep. Akin Alabi, said that the house of representatives would work with the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the two committees on appropriation for adequate funding of the road.

“We are going to work with both the Senate President, the Speaker and the committees on appropriation to make sure funding is not what will delay the project.

“We have seen it over and over again in this country, where you have great intention when you want to begin a project, but along the line, you will run into trouble.

“But this is a project everyone is committed to, both the Executive and the Legislature and it must be delivered. We must make sure that every fund released is accounted for.

“This is the kind of project, a legacy project that will put a smile on people’s faces and we are all committed to achieving it,” Alabi said.

Also, the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, lauded the commitment of the contractor, Hitech Construction Company, on the level of work so far done.

“We commend Hitech. We are very confident that this project, which is 700 kilometres, will be executed successfully under President Tinubu.

“As a former governor of Lagos, he even acquired the right of way for the coastal highways but could not get a contractor at that point to start it.

“He is a man that is very committed to development. We are submitting everything about this project to the President and he will be relating with the national assembly in terms of funding.

“Whatever funds that the national assembly will give us will be properly utilised.

” When we construct roads under the renewed hope of the president, it will last for a hundred years. He is the father of concrete technology in the country, ” Umahi said.

Additionally, Umahi said that when lands along the corridors of the coastal highways are acquired by the government, it would be a gold mine and it would help to pay back for the funding of the project.

The Managing Director Hitech, Mr Dany Abboud, said that the company was committed to finishing the project within the stipulated time.

“We assure you that we are fully committed to do this project as per the directives of the Federal Government through the ministry of works to do it within 36 months. It will be hopefully and willingly done within 36 months if not before,” he said.(NAN)

The All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), has urged President Bola Tinubu to save the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) from being scrapped.

The National President of the union, Mr Muhammad Musa, made the appeal while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commission was among government agencies and commissions being considered for possible scrapping as recommended by the Oronsaye Report.

The report recommended that the functions of the commission be transferred to the department of Basic and Secondary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education.

Musa said scrapping the commission would have a negative impact on the quality of secondary school education delivery in the country.

He added that the proposal, if implemented, would destroy the already fragile secondary education system in the country.

“As it is, secondary education provides children skills to be useful to themselves and the society.

“Scrapping the commission will destroy the secondary education sector and destroy the good structure already put in place.

“If the Oronsaye report’s axe is allowed to fall on the commission, it will bring an end to the current sustained collaborative efforts between NSSEC and the states to reposition secondary schools,” he said.

The president further expressed fear that the commission, if scrapped, would leave secondary and technical schools to take effective charge of the sector.

He, therefore, called on Tinubu to reconsider the recommendation and allow the commission to exist and to continue provide the needed interventions to strengthen secondary school education in the country.

NAN reports that the Federal Government had on March 7, inaugurated a committee for the implementation of the Oronsaye Report, which recommends the merger of some government’s ministries, departments, and agencies to cut the cost of governance. (NAN)

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has thanked President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to be part of his administration’s quest to renew the hope of Nigerians.

Wike poured out his gratitude after inspecting ongoing rural roads projects in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Councils, in Abuja on Thursday.

The minister also commended Tinubu for what he described as ‘tremendous support’ to the FCT Administration to provide critical infrastructure and quality services to residents of the FCT.

The projects inspected included the 7.2-kilometre road linking Gaba and Tokulo communities in Bwari Area Council and the five-kilometre access road linking Saburi 1 and 2 in Abuja Municipal Area Council.

The roads are part of the 42.2-kilometre rural roads being constructed across the six area councils of the FCT.

Wike explained that the Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda was not meant for only the people in the cities but was designed to also ensure that those in rural communities feel the impact of his administration.

“I am very glad to say that the renewed hope agenda is working, particularly as it concerns the area councils.

“The renewed hope Agenda is not only for the cities; it is also to make sure that those in the rural areas feel part of the administration.

“We have been to Bwari and we attest to the fact that, that is a very difficult terrain. No wonder people talk of insecurity.

“But with the construction of that road, you can say that there is hope.

“I feel so happy that I am part of this administration and that people can see changes.

“Again, we are here in Saburi, and you can see the work going on. When we came to inaugurate the road, you could see the enthusiasm among the people,” he said.

The minister added, “I am proud that the contractors are doing very well and by the grace of God all the six projects in the six area councils would be completed before the end of the year.

“That will not stop us from commencing the 2024 infrastructure development in the area councils as we promised.”

He explained that the road projects were being funded from the 2023 emergency supplementary budget.

He added that the N1.28 trillion FCT 2024 statutory budget, when assented by Tinubu would also be used to construct additional roads in the six area councils.

Wike, who expressed optimism that the 2024 budget was realistic, added that 58 per cent of the capital budget would be expended on ongoing projects.

He also said that the remaining 42 per cent was earmarked for critical new projects, which would commence after the assent of Mr president.

“We are happy that everything we have started will be completed soon.

“This attest to the fact that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope” agenda is not just in theory; it’s practical – ‘seeing is believing’, the minister said. (NAN)
