Police kill 4 suspected pirates in Akwa Ibom

Sunday Bassey

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom said its officers killed four suspected pirates who specialised in terrorising fishermen in Ibeno waterways in the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Macdon Odiko, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state on Friday.

Odiko, however, said the suspected pirates had a gun battle with the marine police at Ibeno waterways which led to their death on Thursday, March 4.

“The story is true but I will soon issue a press statement to that effect,” Odiko said.

Mr Williams Mkpa, the Chairman of Ibeno Local Government Area, also confirmed the killing of the suspected pirates in Ibeno.

Mkpa who commended the security personnel for a job well done said that piracy had been a major problem hindering fishing business and other economic activities in Ibeno.

He said the four suspected pirates were killed during a gun duel between the security personnel and the suspects in Ibeno waterways.

The chairman poured encomiums on the gallant officers whom he said had justified the resources spent on security by gradually bringing back peace to the waterways.

“Yesterday, during routine patrol, the squad engaged in a shootout with pirates which saw the pirates overpowered and four of them killed with one escaping with bullet wounds,” Mkpa said.

He said that items recovered from the suspects were AK 47 rifles, life ammunition and charms.

“It is on record that pirates have terrorised Ibeno waters in recent times thereby crippling fishing and other economic activities in the area,” Mkpa said.

The chairman recalled that he had recently inaugurated a special marine security outfit to curb piracy in Ibeno waterways.

Mkpa restated his commitment to partner security agencies to drive evil elements out of Ibeno territory waterways.

“We shall not rest on our mandate to make our communities and waterways safe, we will not drop the board but will do everything to support security agencies.

“The resources invested in security in the last 100 days of our administration are yielding fruits and I must warn evil elements to either change or vacate our communities as we will not rest until they are flushed from our land,” Mkpa said. (NAN)

AfCFTA, key driver for Africa’s post COVID-19 economic recovery – S-G

By Rukayat Moisemhe
Mr Wamkele Mene, Secretary General, Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has described the AfCFTA as a driver for Africa’s recovery from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
He said it would drive recovery from impacts of the pandemic on the continent’s industralisation growth and development agenda.
Mene made the assertion during a courtesy visit to the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Friday in Lagos.
He said the continent’s ability to trade in merchandise and services inclusive of the airlines industry, tourism and other components was critical to its recovery.
Mene said that Africa, before the onset of the pandemic, was a significant market with a growing rate of 3.4 per cent annually, and the producer of six out of 10 fastest growing economies of the world.
“With COVID-19, we went from that to a contraction of a magnitude that we have not had in about 30 years.
“But with the objectives of the AfCFTA, by 2035, by dabbling into Africa trade, Africa is on the path to industrial development and we are building a capacity to diversify our exports within and outside the continent,” he said.
According to him, the projection of International Monetary Fund is that by 2022, there will be some positive growth trajectory of 2.1 per cent for Sub-Saharan Africa if we roll out vaccines on time and implement the AfCFTA.
He said that the AfCFTA, therefore, is the driver for Africa’s recovery with all the components critical to this happening.
The AfCFTA Secretary General  also addressed the obvious challenges with rules of origin under the agreement.
Mene said that the agreement had rules that catered to discipline, dumping of products, subsidised products and preferential safeguards amongst others.
He called for concerted efforts by the private sector, AfCFTA Secretariat and regulatory agencies to build greater capacity for the custom authorities of participating countries for the success of the agreement.
This, he said, would ensure the enforcement of discipline and build the capacity of the customs services to implement the trade rules of the AfCFTA effectively.
Mene lauded the efforts of the Nigerian government at establishing its trade remedy authorities to address investigation, issues of origin and punitive measures where necessary.
“At the moment, only two countries –  Egypt and South Africa – have their trade remedy authorities ready, and this has the ability to prevent dumping and address many other challenges associated with inter-African trade.
“Nigeria is at the advance stage of establishing a trade recovery remedy authority and this is a very positive step,” he said.
In her remarks, Mrs Toki Mabogunje, President, LCCI, said the AfCFTA was largely a story of immense excitement and expectation among the Nigerian business community because of the inherent opportunities.
Mabogunje said that the AfCFTA would make the continent more integrated, united and prosperous, especially in the light of the numerous benefits of a larger market.
She, however, expressed anxiety over the competitiveness challenges and possible import surge that would come with the continental integration deal.
“The Chamber believes it’s an opportunity for countries to scale up their competitiveness by improving their investment climate.
“Ultimately, it would be to the benefit of the economies of the continent and the welfare of our citizens,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mene would be a special guest at the LCCI’s forum themed: ” AfCFTA: Roadmap to a successful implementation” scheduled for March 16.
Also expected to attend is Mr Victor Liman, Acting Chief Trade Negotiator/Director General, Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations . (NAN)

Ogun govt. inaugurates ICT lab in MAPOLY

By Abiodun Lawal

The Ogun Government on Friday inaugurated a 280-seater capacity Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory project at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta.

Speaking after the inauguration, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, Commissioner for Education, commended the institution for moving in tandem with the vision of Gov. Dapo Abiodun.

Arigbabu noted that technology remained important and paramount to development of the education sector.

“I am really impressed with the facility because the management of the polytechnic seems to be moving in tandem with the vision of the governor.

“Looking at what is happening now all over the world with the pandemic, all of us have seen that teaching and learning cannot be achieved on the face to face level alone.

“These days you have to blend the face to face with virtual teaching and there should be more of virtual teaching and to achieve this, technology is needed.

“What MAPOLY has done with the provision of ICT facility will aid teaching and learning. It will also help students with Computer-Based Test (CBT) examination.

“It will also help for UTME and Post-UTME examinations; and all the general courses that require CBT. That is, large classes can be done with this type of facility,” he said.

The commissioner said that the governor had also mandated the Ministry of Education to ensure that it introduced technology at primary and secondary schools.

“We are going to have resource centres across the state with 36 flagship schools. Secondary and primary will be the pilot where we start from,’’ he said.

Arigbabu noted that the present administration would continue to accord education sector necessary support, saying that it remained the bedrock of any developed nation.

Earlier, Acting Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Adeoye Odedeji, said the new ICT laboratory would enhance learning process and that E-learning had come to stay in modern education.

Odedeji reiterated that the project would help the students of the institution and be an advantage to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and other academic purposes.

We’ll ensure Nigerians no longer live in fear, says CDS Irabor

By Ismaila Chafe

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, has assured that the newly promoted Service Chiefs would ensure that Nigerians no longer lives in fear.

Irabor gave the assurance when he fielded questions from State House correspondents after the service chiefs were decorated with their new ranks, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday.

He also pledged that the service chiefs in collaboration with other security agencies would soon restore normalcy to all troubled areas across the country.

He said: “Nigerians expect us to bring about peace and security in concert with other security agencies, that we will do.

“We can’t live in fear. And we will ensure that whatever brings fear to Nigerians before now will be a thing of the past.

“Peace and security is not just the security of the borders alone. It comes with having to build bridges across various divides.

“We, as members of the Armed Forces, will never in any way demand peace and security of our nation in the hands of the terrorists. Rather it is we that will determine the peace and not for us to leave it in the hands of the terrorists.’’

According to the CDS, what the new service chiefs will not do is to give instructions to their subordinates and not do the same.

“What we will not do is to give instructions to our subordinates and not do the same.

“By extension, we will command the troops based on the expectations that we have of them and they will do it according to the expectations that we have of them too,’’ he said.

On whether the new service chiefs will consider change of strategies in the fight against insurgency, banditry and violent crimes in the country, Irabor said they would review the current strategies with a view to meeting the demands of current security challenges.

“Strategies are not sacrosanct. Of course, there are dynamics that we need to begin to look at, what needs to be reviewed, and that is precisely what we are doing currently.

“We review various strategies and of course come up with new ones to be able to meet the demands of the current realities,’’ he added.

He noted that the president had given them a marching order to restore peace to all troubled areas in the country, saying they would work assiduously to achieve that.

On what Nigerians should expect from the newly promoted CDS and the service chiefs in the next 100 days, Irabor said:

“No doubt, next 100 days is not as important as today. I believe that as members of the Armed Forces working in concert with the rest of the security agencies, we will bring Mr President’s expectations to bear in terms of our task.

“But let me also let you know that the inevitable is that Nigerians will indeed experience peace and security across the land.’’

The CDS, who thanked the president for giving them the opportunity to serve the nation, enjoined all citizens to partner with the security agencies in ensuring peace and progress of the nation. (NAN)

Tinubu urges youths to avoid thuggery

By Grace Alegba/Florence Onuegbu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has urged youths in Agege and Lagos in general to embrace peace and avoid thuggery.

Tinubu gave the advice on Friday during the inauguration of the 1.4 km flyover at the Pen Cinema junction, Agege.

He urged them to embrace peace for prosperity of the area.

According to him, no meaningful development can be achieved in an atmosphere of insecurity, hence, the need to embrace peace at all times.

The National Leader commended the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his cabinet for putting the state on the path to progress.

He praised them for being steadfast even during the COVID-19 pandemic and EndSARS mayhem.

”Instead of showing frustration, you have showcased where there is a focused government, no matter the turbulence you run into, you can bring prosperity.

”We thank you for not letting us down and for being who you are and what we believed you were before election,” Tinubu said.

He said that though some party followers doubted the capability of Sanwo-Olu when he was chosen as the governorship candidate of the party in 2018, his performances since he became governor had proven doubters wrong.

According to him,  the ship of the state in 2017-2018 seemed to have been geared toward the wrong direction but Sanwo-Olu turned it round as the captain with his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

”We thank this administration for not letting us down, we thank you for being who you are and who we think you were even before the election.

”Ever since Babajide Sanwo-Olu became the captain of the ship of our state, he has turned it right for progress and development and shown good leadership.

”Those of you at the cabinet have developed an equal determination to develop and rebuild for the people of Lagos state,” he said.

Tinubu said that the current administration was a team of great performers and doers, who were capable of building Lagos back to progress.

”I am elated that Lagos has become a huge construction site. I recognise and commend the harmony between the Executive and the Legislature that has brought much development to the state.

”In APC, we seek for talents and we don’t destroy them, we prune them and watch them grow and perform satisfactorily.

”As a government, you have shown commitment even in the face of the pandemic. The road (Agege Flyover) will bring development and good life.

“The youth, l encourage you to avoid thuggery and destruction. Government has given you education to reach greater heights,”  Tinubu said. (NAN)

He said it was part of the agency’s function to carry out technical inspection, testing and certification of all categories of electrical installations, electricity meters and instruments.

“We are working towards the safety of lives and properties in the Nigerian electricity supply industry, and other allied industries and workplaces.

“We have been trying to formalize this agreement, and today I want to thank the DG of SON because he has made it possible,” he said.
