Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole has destroyed a new Boko Haram settlement at Mana Waji in Borno, killing scores of the terrorists in massive air interdiction missions on Friday.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, in a statement on Saturday, said the air interdiction missions were conducted after series of surveillance revealed the settlement.

He said that the series of aerial surveillance missions revealed that the new settlement was being used to store their weapons and logistics items and as well as plan and stage attacks.

Enenche said the air strikes were executed employing a force package of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and helicopter gunships.

According to him, on sighting the NAF aircraft, the insurgents were seen fleeing the location.

“Consequently, in a preemptive move, the NAF attack aircraft engaged the new location in successive passes, leading to the destruction of some of the structures and logistics stores.

“Several insurgents were also neutralised in the process,” he said.(NAN)

A don, Mary Oyewale, on Saturday, expressed support for improvement in educational provision and training opportunities, under the 2021 budget, specifically for Nomads, for them to be part of the nation’s development plans.

Oyewale of the Department of Arts and Languages, Faculty of Education, Ekiti State University, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-Ekiti, stated that every Nigerian child had a right to equal educational opportunity, irrespective of real or imagined disabilities.

“There is the need for the nomads to be given attention academically, in order to satisfy their educational needs and interests. No doubt that great quality assurance will be achieved in the Nomadic Education programme in Nigeria, if given the desired encouragement,” she said.

Oyewale further said that the importance of nomadic education could not be over-emphasised or down played, as it was a means by which society eradicated illiteracy and enhanced the socio-economic conditions of the rural populace.

She identified challenges confronting nomadic education as: inadequate teaching and learning materials, lack of up-to-date statistics and lack of developed policies aimed at providing nomads the type of education that suited their lifestyle.

Others, she said, were insufficient funds, inadequate infrastructure, lack of adequate supervision and monitoring by local, state officials.

The don recommended the inclusion of members of nomadic groups in national planning and decision making, as concerned nomadic issues, so as to achieve the desired objectives and targets.

She urged governments at all levels to create avenues for feedback from the people as regards developments on nomadic education.

Oyewale also called on the National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE) to ensure recruitment and training of more teachers for deployment to areas where nomadic education was being practiced.

“The use of Information and Communication Technology can also be of great assistance in championing nomadic education, especially in dealing with difficulties over COVID-19.

“Since the Fulani nomads stay mostly in the bush and always on the move with their families, ICT-based distant teaching and learning may be of great help in bridging the educational gap,” Oyewale added. (NAN)

NAF conducts search and rescue training for personnel

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Saturday conducted a special search and rescue training for some of its personnel, to deepen their competence during combat operations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training exercise code named “Taimako Yazo” was conducted on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway.

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS),  Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar,  in his address, said personnel readiness was key to the success of any military operations.

Abubakar recalled that in 2019 the NAF had conducted several counter-terrorism exercises in Kaduna, Kano, Niger and Osun.

He said this was in a bid to further develop the capacity of its Special Operations Force, to be better positioned to respond to the various security challenges bedeviling the country.

“The overall desire is to ensure that our personnel are trained and equipped to maintain very high level of combat readiness and operational effectiveness.

“This aspiration no doubt is in tandem with our yearning to reposition the NAF into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building initiatives for effective, efficient and timely employment of air power, in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives.

“Accordingly, today’s exercise which is based on a Combat Search and Rescue situation is designed to exercise the capacity of our personnel to rescue downed aircrew who have had to eject or abandon their aircraft in emergency situations.

“The importance of training to a fighting force like the NAF cannot be over emphasised as regular purposeful training remains the cornerstone of military combat readiness,” he added.

According to Abubakar, this will ensure that NAF personnel are always at top physical fitness level to be able, willing and ready to execute any mission successfully.

“It is in realisation of this that the NAF ensures that its personnel are mentally alert and physically fit at all times through regular training and exercises to ensure that we remain continually willing, able and ready to defend the nation,” he said.

The Air Chief stated that even with today’s modern weapon systems, it is the personnel with competence that would make the difference in any current or future conflict situations.

“This philosophy has been incorporated into the NAF policies and regulations to ensure that personnel maintain a high level of combat readiness that would ensure efficiency and effectiveness in conduct of a wide spectrum military operations.

“Accordingly, in the quest to achieve professionalism, service members are subjected to excruciatingly difficult training procedures and exposures to various terrain conditions to enable them to achieve and maintain a high level of combat effectiveness.

“This, no doubt, will help our personnel perform at the highest standards, throughout their career.

“By organising this exercise we are also mindful of the need to sustain professionalism among our personnel,” he said.

Abubakar lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support for the growth and development of the NAF.

He reassured Nigerians that the NAF remained fully committed to the successful execution of its constitutional roles and would continue to meet its statutory responsibility of defending the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation.

Earlier, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), NAF Special Operations Command, AVM Charles Ohwo, said that the objective of the exercise was to rehearse the tactics and doctrine.

He added that it was also to create a synergy amongst first responders for effective combat search and rescue operations of downed aircrew or other NAF personnel.

The AOC said that the ability to rescue crew in hostile environment was particularly important, as it could be adapted in anti-kidnapping operations.

This, according to him, was recently used by the NAF in concert with other security agencies in the rescue of the 344 boys of the Government Science Secondary School,  Kankara, Katsina State.

He said the exercise was a deliberate effort to boost human capacity, through robust and result oriented training for enhanced professional performance.

“The cliché of sweating more in training to bleed less in battle underscores the essence of this exercise.

“Hence, the event will enhance NAF combat efficiency, bearing in mind that combat efficiency is born from the right combinations of man and machine, as well as competent methods.

“Even more pertinent is that this event is in consonance with the CAS vision to reposition the NAF into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building initiatives for effective, efficient and timely employment of air power, in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives.

“The timing for this event could, therefore, not have been more apt as the NAF is currently engaged in counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations in the North-East and North-West of Nigeria respectively.

“Notwithstanding tactics and doctrine, the event will enable our personnel to imbibe regimentation and fully appreciate the need for effective Air-Ground Integration,” he said.

NAN reports that the exercise was the fifth NAF combat-related event organised since 2019.  (NAN)

Some Lagos residents, on Saturday, expressed optimism that 2021 would be a better year for them and the nation.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that the previous year fell short of their expectations, with the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Adekunle Brown, a Lawyer, said he started a digital marketing business last year and was hopeful for an expansion this year.

According to Brown, who is also a fish farmer, the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on his farm was what prompted him to start up the new business.

He added that his other expectation for 2021 was for a thriving economy and a realistic health provision for the citizenry of Nigeria.

“I value life more now because the Year 2020 had thought me that life can be very unpredictable.

“It is normal to have a crisis but how you manage it is what matters most; I think I would like to infuse that philosophy to every aspect of my life.

“I believe this year will be better,’’ he said.

Another fish farmer, Mr John Aisien, however, expressed gratitude to God for helping him to surpass his target for 2020.

Aisien said he believed that 2021 would be great because he was ready to attain a new level in his business.

“In the aspect of my production last year, I planned to produce up to one million fingerlings but by the grace of God, I exceeded that. I want to go beyond that this year.

“This pandemic has taught me how to keep fighting despite the challenges.

“The goal is not to give up but to always look at the positive angle in every situation,’’ Aisien said.

Mr Solomon Odewale, a teacher, says one of his goals is to set up his company before the first quarter of 2021.

Odewale added that he looked forward to getting married this year, as his plans to get married in 2020 did not work out.

“I have two goals already for this year; one is to set up my company, and the other, to get married.

“The Year 2020 was a year of so many lessons; I learnt to appreciate the people around me more and to be more creative.

“My former girlfriend disappeared off the screen but thank God she left, it made me realise that I needed to work more on myself,’’ the teacher said.

Also, Mrs Olufunmi Adeoye, a Nutritionist, said that 2021 would be a great year, as she was ready to work harder and look for other ways to improve her career. (NAN)

Some tomato sellers in Enugu have attributed the current drop in price of the commodity to its harvest season which has led to a glut.

A visit by a Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to some of the major markets in Enugu on Saturday, showed that a big basket of tomatoes now sells for N11,500 as against the previous price of N16, 000.

According to the traders, the price of tomatoes usually dropped during its harvest season.

One of them, Miss Oge Madu, a tomato seller, at Garki Market, said that the major reason for the sudden reduction in price of tomatoes was due to the cultivation of tomatoes in Enugu (Nsukka)

“The Nsukka tomatoes are also flooding the markets and this has made the commodity to reduce in price.

“During rainy season tomatoes are scarce, the prices are high, but in dry season, they are surplus and the prices usually drop,” Madu said.

Also, Mr Rufus Ozor, a tomato seller at new Akwata in Garki Market, said that the prices of tomatoes had significantly dropped in Enugu markets.

“A small basket of UTC tomatoes that comes from Jos  now goes for between N7,000 and N8, 500 as against N13,000 in October.

“A month ago, UTC tomatoes was scarce and expensive, but now it has flooded the markets making it affordable by everyone,”Ozor said.

Meanwhile, the pepper sellers on the other hand, have lamented over the increase in the price of pepper  in the markets.

Miss Agnes Onu, a pepper seller at Mayor market, said that a bag of  ‘Scotch Bonnet Pepper’ “ata-rodo” which was previously sold for N8,000, now sells for between N13,500 and N17,000.

“This is pepper planting season that is why it is scarce now,”Onu said.

Another pepper seller, who spoke on condition of anonymity added that the cost of transportation also added to the increase in price of the commodity.

“What l know is that we sell as we buy from those that bring it to the market ” she said. (NAN)

The Federal Government has approved a replacement policy for subscribers whose Subscribers Identification Module (SIM) may have been lost, stolen, misplaced or damaged.

Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, Director, Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and Mr Kayode Adegoke of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), jointly made this known in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Adinde explained that the policy was part of the government’s efforts to reduce the burden on subscribers and simplify the exercise so as to enable telecommunications services to the public.

He said that the Ministerial Task Force, under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, had set up a Technical Committee, made up of representatives of the NCC, NIMC, The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), to facilitate the policy.

Adinde added that the committee was also charged with the operationalisation of the process, to ensure an expedited linkage of all SIM Registration Records with the NIN.

Similarly, the minister had approved some conditions, based on recommendations of the Technical Committee, that required the subscriber to present a NIN, an effective verification of the NIN by NIMC, and adherence with the relevant Guidelines and Regulations of NCC, concerning SIM replacement.

According to him, the government’s drive to ensure all subscriber registrations were linked with NINs was on course and all stakeholders in the industry are working together to ensure a seamless process.

He said that the government sincerely appreciated Nigerians for the understanding and the commitment demonstrated towards ensuring the overall success of the exercise. (NAN)

South Africa urges manufacturers, farmers to expand exports through AfCFTA

57 total views today

South Africa’s Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel on Friday urged manufacturers and farmers in the country to prepare themselves for opportunities in export markets following the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

AfCFTA came into effect on Friday.

Patel, while believing the agreement could lead to more employment opportunities, said it could also help manufacturers in South Africa to expand to new markets available in West, Central and East Africa.

“Trade with the rest of the continent is a critical source of output and jobs growth. African countries recognise that industrialisation is critical to the development of the continent,” he said.

Patel said the agreement could potentially transform business in Africa though its impact will not be immediate.

“The new agreement that comes into effect today will take some time to be fully operational but has the potential to be transformative for Africa, breaking our dependence on a neo-colonial pattern of trade that characterised trade,” he said.

He also said this was a chance to build advanced economies and innovative businesses.

“It will take dedication and disciplined implementation over the next few years to fully realise the benefits,” he added.

The free trade agreement, launched in March 2018 in the Rwandan capital city Kigali, has so far gathered 54 African Union member signatories.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa said the African free trade accord has the potential to boost the level of intra-Africa trade by more than 52 per cent by the year 2022. (Xinhua/NAN)
