He stated this on Thursday during an assessment tour to the Bauchi Zonal office of the agency.

According to Ali, the agency needs to scale up by employing modern techniques to satisfy the needs of its subscribers.

He reiterated commitment of the management to reposition the agency through viable infrastructure development for effective service delivery.

“The dawn of the digital era, Artificial Intelligence, these are challenges we have to contend with and already the management are thinking ahead of time.

“The Bauchi Zonal office is not doing badly but it could do better, and doing better means greater editorial direction and managerial support from Abuja.

“One of the reasons why we are doing this assessment tour is to see and assess on a firsthand basis the extent of the challenges, the gaps of operational facilities, working tools and general infrastructure,” he said.

He said the agency would conduct training for its staff to enable them to get acquainted and exposed to modern reporting skills.

NAN MD, Ali M. Ali (centre), during an assessment tour of the agency’s office on Thursday in Bauchi

Taoreed Lagbaja is alive – Army

By Sumaila Ogbaje

The Nigerian Army has refuted the rumoured death of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, by some individuals on social platforms.

The army refuted the rumour in a post on its official X Handle on Sunday, tagging a post by one Jackson Ude as: “Fake News”.

Some online reports had insinuated that the Army Chief had passed on in an undisclosed hospital abroad.

All the reports quoted the said Jackson Ude as their source without any official confirmation from the Army and Defence Headquarters.

However, the Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Saturday, issued a statement that the COAS was on leave and also attending to his health outside the country.

Nwachukwu said that there was no leadership vacuum in the Nigerian Army, clarifying that the Chief of Policy and Plans, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, was in charge of affairs in the army.

He said that while some of the stories were laughable and deserved no further reference, others had bothered on pure mischief calculated to cause panic and confusion within the rank and file, as well as the general public.

“To be very clear, the Nigerian Army is a highly structured establishment with well-laid-out procedures and processes for dealing with different circumstances.

“Before proceeding on leave, necessary protocols were put in place for the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalami Ibrahim, to act on behalf of the COAS, while he is away.

“This is not peculiar to the army as there have been instances where unforeseen human frailty kept service chiefs away for about three months, and their Chiefs of Policy and Plans held sway in their absence.

“The Army Headquarters, therefore, enjoins the general public to remain confident in the Nigerian Army and be assured that the Service remains on top of the security situations in the country and is ever ready to defend Nigeria against any aggression on its land territory.

“Meanwhile, the Army Headquarters wishes to thank all well-meaning Nigerians who have shown genuine concern about Lt.-Gen.T. A. Lagbaja and have continued to pray for him,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

“I am particularly happy that the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery has continued to be innovative and also utilising its new technologies for provision of effective fire support to the Nigerian Army.

“This has evidently manifested in the various theatres of operation across the country, “he said.

Lagbaja explained that the periodic assessment visits to the Nigerian Army School of Artillery and other artillery formations provided better understanding of the state of integral weapon systems, equipment and other capabilities.

”This is to transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped and highly motivated force towards achieving our responsibilities”.

While commending President Bola Tinubu for his support to the Nigerian Army, Lagbaja tasked the Corps not to rest on its oars but to keep the shells flying and continue to be the Corps of Proud Professionals.

Earlier, the Commander, Corps of Artillery, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, said the training was critical to achieving any desired end in military operations.

Kangye restated commitment to develop skilled and competent artillery personnel as well ad maintain serviceable platforms and equipment required for the provision of accurate, timely and effective fire support to NA operations.

”This year’s exercise has consolidated on the gains of last year with the participation of NA Space Command through the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle systems for observation and correction of fall of shots”.  (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Litigations delay implementation of host communities trust fund – Stakeholders

By Emmanuella Anokam

The Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas (HOSTCOM), says litigations is delaying the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) Fund creation and implementation.

HOSTCOM said pending issues by host communities in choosing members and chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), also delayed the implementation of the HCDT funds.

Dr Benjamin Tamaranebi, National President, HOSTCOM, gave the clarifications on Thursday in Abuja, while reacting to claims on the Host Community Project Funding in Akwa Ibom.

The HCDT is responsible for managing and distributing oil company funds to the host communities, ensuring that resources are used effectively for community development projects.

Host communities in Akwa Ibom had decried delayed release of funds by oil companies to HCDT, alledging that it hindered projects implementation outlined in their respective development plans.

Community representatives from HCDT in Ibeno, Eket, Mbo, Esit Eket, Uruan and Ikot Abasi LGAs, chided the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission’s (NUPRC), for its inability to enforce statutory sanctions on defaulting oil companies.

However, Tamaranebi dismissed as “unfounded,” alleged delays in funding development projects in host communities in Akwa Ibom.

“We must state clearly that some of the delays of HCDTs creation are caused by community members and litigations over who wants to be a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees which has nothing to do with NUPRC.

“So, we advise communities to conduct themselves properly for the benefit of the HCDT funds,” he said.

Dr Benjamin Tamaranebi, National President, HOSTCOM

He said the NUPRC initiated the HCDTs Forum to meet with community representatives through its HCDT trustees, to address broader issues and grievances ensuring continuous dialogue between host communities and the operators.

The national president said the forum had promoted transparency and accountability towards ensuring that community voices are heard at a higher level.

Tamaranebi said there was registration of reputable 34 asset/fund manager to invest 20 per cent of the three per cent Operating Expenses or Expenditure (OPEX) on behalf of the trusts.

“Some of the trusts are already benefiting from the dividend of this investments.

“These achievements underscore the commitment of the NUPRC and Settlors to the sustainable development of host communities.

“We encourage all stakeholders, including community members and operators, to maintain open lines of communication with the HOSTCOM or NUPRC,” he said.

On project implementation, Tamaranebi urged parties to engage with HOSTCOM directly for resolution rather than resorting to public statements that may misinform or escalate tensions.

He said HOSTCOM was actively monitoring the situation in Akwa Ibom and other states, to advocate for the rights and developmental needs of local communities. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Sumaila Ogbaje

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has led a team of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) experts to acquire fighter jets and helicopters from Italy.

Members of the delegation include officials from the Ministries of Defence and Finance, to finalise acquisition of fighter jets and helicopters from Messrs Leonardo S.p.A in Italy.

The platforms include 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) jets and an additional 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, on Sunday in Abuja.

Akinboyewa said that two AW-109 Trekker helicopters had already been acquired by NAF.

He said that the CAS made a strategic stopover at the Leonardo Headquarters in Rome, where he engaged with top executives to consolidate a long-term partnership between the NAF and the company.

According to him, Abubakar also inspected the first batch of 6 M-346 jets, noting that three are nearing completion, and evaluated key support systems required to boost the NAF’s operational readiness.

“In the Review Meeting, the CAS received updates on the delivery schedules, confirming that the first three units of 24 M-346 aircraft to be built for Nigeria are expected by early 2025, with subsequent deliveries running until mid-2026.

“Meanwhile, with 2 Trekkers already acquired, the additional 10 are expected by early 2026.

“The CAS recommended the establishment of a Programme Management Office to oversee the collaboration and ensure smooth project implementation.

“He also stressed the need for a maintenance hub in Nigeria to provide long-term support, especially for the M-346 fleet,” Akinboyewa said.

The NAF spokesman said that the firm’s Aircraft Division put on an aerial display to showcase the performance of the M-346 and highlight its advanced features as part of the visit.

According to him, capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, the M-346 will significantly strengthen Nigeria’s air combat capabilities.

“On its part, the AW-109 will bolster combat support roles such as Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), tactical airlift and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) amongst others.

“The M-346 and Trekker acquisitions are key steps towards fleet renewal, in consonance with the CAS Command Philosophy.

“His philosophy is to transform the NAF for greater agility and resilience, with emphasis on the optimisation of force structure and establishment for enhanced operational effectiveness,” he added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nigeria not snubbed in UN Human Rights Council election – Presidency

456 total views today

By Salif Atojoko

Nigeria was not snubbed in the 2024 UN Human Rights Council election, as some reports have claimed, says Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, Information and Strategy.

Onanuga said this in a statement titled, “Setting the Record Straight,” on Sunday.

He said the country did not stand as a candidate for this cycle of elections, just like it did not stand for election in 2023 when a Nigerian medium reported that the country earned three votes.

“The same lie was rehashed in the erroneous report in circulation. Again, we restate that Nigeria was not on the ballot in the election held on Oct. 9.

“Whatever vote was recorded for our country must have been cast in error in the secret balloting by some countries which thought Nigeria was on the ballot,” said Onanuga.

According to him, for those conversant with elections into international organisations, especially to the Human Rights Council, countries vying for positions usually receive regional endorsements.

He said the regional bloc endorsed Benin and Gambia, both members of ECOWAS, for the 2025-2027 term.

Given Nigeria’s continued leadership in fostering African unity, he said the nation focused on supporting the endorsed candidates to promote collective African representation.

“This has been the hallmark of President Bola Tinubu’s leadership on the continent.

“This strategic approach aligns with Nigeria’s long-standing diplomatic efforts to ensure Africa speaks with a united voice on the global stage.

“The media should cross-check their information before rushing to press. There was no sign this was done with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or our country’s mission in New York.

“As Nigerians, we should not be quick to disparage or drag our country, especially on international matters,” said the presidential aide.

He stated that on Oct. 9, the UN General Assembly elected 18 members to the Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term.

The members elected to the Council are: Benin, Bolivia, Colombia, Cyprus, Czechia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Iceland, Kenya, Marshall Islands, Mexico, North Macedonia, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand.

Onanuga said the Council was an intergovernmental body within the UN system consisting of 47 States tasked with promoting and protecting human rights globally.

“The election, conducted via secret ballot, determined which nations would fill three-year terms beginning on Jan. 1, 2025, replacing members whose terms expire on Dec. 31, 2024.

“Among the outgoing members are: Argentina, Benin, Cameroon, Eritrea, Finland, Gambia, Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Montenegro, Paraguay, Qatar, Somalia, United Arab Emirates and the United States,” he said.

He added that a report on the meeting published by the UN said Argentina, Cameroon, Eritrea, India and Somalia, which had served two consecutive terms, were ineligible for immediate re-election.

Also, Albania, Algeria, Brazil, China, Ghana, Japan, and South Africa will continue serving on the Council.

“In the African regional group, the endorsed candidates, Benin, Gambia, Kenya, DRC, and Ethiopia – successfully secured all the five available seats.

“There was no competition in the African regional group, as the continent fielded the same number of candidates as available seats,” Onanuga clarified. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Mohammed Baba Busu, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

On September 10,  2024, a unique and gracious celebration package commenced earnestly for the Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers.

The event was designed to celebrate Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar’s 72nd birthday and 21 years on the throne as a first-class royal father.

The Etsu is one of the revered traditional rulers in Nigeria, partly because of the tremendous impact he has made in the lives of the less privileged in his domain and even beyond.

This year’s celebration was exceptional for many reasons. One of them is the manner he touched the lives of countless less privileged citizens of the society in a manner no one expected.

The celebration started on September 10 through September 15, 2024.

On the first day of the week-long event, the royal father visited the Medium Security Custodial Centre located in Bida where he had a chat with the inmates and counseled them on morals while serving their various jail terms.

As a compassionate father, Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar (Bahagadozhi), facilitated the release of six inmates.

He paid all that was needed, including their fines and compensation for those imprisoned because of debts.

It was indeed, a heart-rending sight as the released prisoners and some persons who witnessed how it happened were shedding tears of joy.

He also donated food items and toiletries to the inmates, encouraged them to be law-abiding and take full advantage of the educational and vocational programmes available to them to transform their lives.

He emphasized the importance of them being productive and useful to themselves and the larger society after serving their jail terms.

While receiving the royal father on behalf of the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (CGCS), Malam Haliru Nababa: the Controller of Correctional Service, Niger State Command, Mr Maikudi Garba Adamu, applauded the Etsu Nupe for his support and care for the inmates.

He congratulated him on his 21 years on the throne and his 72nd birthday, prayed for his sustained good health, long life, and blessings for the progress of his domain and humanity in general.

Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar also went to Bida remand home and donated cash and food items to the inmates.

He also visited the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, where he donated N5,000 cash to each of all the patients on admission, gave them packages that contain toiletries.

Still in the spirit of the celebration, the royal father visited the school for the physically challenged and made donation of several items, including food stuff, cash and instructional materials.

He also took time to empower widows, youths and other vulnerable residents of his domain.

The epochal activities marking the 72nd birthday and 21 years on the throne climaxed with special prayers at the Bida Central Mosque.

Speaking during the special prayers and walimat, the Royal Father appreciated God Almighty for keeping him alive and giving him sound heath.

He also commended his subjects and all residents of the state for their support over the years since he ascended the throne.

While commenting on the current economic hardship in the country, the royal father admonished his subjects to be patient and continue to pray for God’s grace to overcome the present predicament.

He also noted that there is no beginning that does not have an end, and stressed that there is no situation that prayer cannot change.

He advised his subjects to stop blaming the government but rather continue to offer fervent prayers and trust in God, noting that all developed nations have passed through periods of hardship before stabilising to become great.

While also enjoining his subjects to live in peace with each other over the years, he charged them to continue to tolerate one another and continue to resolve differences including land disputes amicably.

He called on leaders at all levels to fear God and try as much as possible to put in place policies that will make life easy and meaningful for the less privileged members of the society.

He particularly called on those who are saddled with the responsibilities of distributing agricultural inputs meant to be free, to ensure that they give genuine farmers free as stipulated by the government.

Also, in a special Sunday service to mark the memorable event, the Bishop of Bida Anglican Church, Rt. Rev. Jonah Kolo thanked God for giving the Etsu Nupe the grace to celebrate the 72nd birthday.

He also prayed for many more years in sound health and mind.

He commended the Etsu Nupe for his unbiased way of handling issues in the kingdom and also carrying everybody along, including adherents of all religions.

This, according to him, has been the enabler of peaceful coexistence in the state.

President Bola Tinubu was also part of the celebration as he made public statement to congratulate the Etsu Nupe for attaining 21 years on the throne and 72nd birthday.

This, many said, is a special recognition of the contribution of the royal father to the peaceful coexistence of residents of Niger State and to the growth of the country.

In a congratulatory statement signed by the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, he said:

“President Tinubu recognises the strong and purposeful leadership of the Etsu Nupe as Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers and his contributions to the traditional leadership institution and community development.

“The President commends the first-class traditional ruler for supporting education and development initiatives and facilitating healthcare projects in Nupe Kingdom.

“President Tinubu also commends him for working for the stability of the country by promoting peaceful coexistence and cooperation among different ethnic groups, not only in Niger State but also throughout Nigeria.

“The President also notes the Etsu Nupe’s steadfastness in promoting interfaith harmony and understanding among different religious groups since he assumed his ancestors’ throne more than two decades ago.

“He urges the highly regarded monarch of the Nupe Kingdom to continue to foster national unity and development.

“President Tinubu wishes the king good health and happiness as he celebrates.”

On his part, Gov. Mohammed Umaru-Bago of Niger also eulogised the wisdom and deep knowledge demonstrated by the Etsu Nupe in providing purposeful leadership to residents of his kingdom over the past 21 years.

In a congratulatory message, the governor commended the fatherly role that the 13th Etsu Nupe has been playing not just among the Nupe-speaking people but throughout the nation.

He noted that the unity and high cultural values among his subjects speak volumes of his purposeful leadership.

The governor stressed that the Etsu Nupe had done exceptionally well to promote, strengthen and sustain the age-long rich cultural heritage of the Nupe Kingdom.

He categorically noted that the reign of Etsu Nupe has tremendously impacted positively on not only his subjects alone but also diverse Nigerians around his kingdom, describing him as a bridge-builder, selfless, determined and caring leader, who always stands by his people.

“It is, therefore, important to stress that the revered royal father needs the continued support, prayers and goodwill of all residents of Niger state to enable him to continue to provide the needed leadership to people.

“Youths in the state must also learn and emulate the virtues (love and care for each other), of the royal father for a peaceful and prosperous Niger State.

“Let me also join millions of residents of Niger state and the country at large to wish our royal father long life, good health and more prosperous years ahead,” Bago said.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris described the Etsu Nupe as “a worthy leader who has displayed exceptional wisdom to his people”.

While identifying himself with the successes recorded by the Nupe traditional ruler Idris, who holds the title of Kakaaki Nupe, commended the peace and prosperity in Nupe land under his leadership.

“Etsu Nupe has been a worthy leader who has displayed exceptional wisdom to his people, and to which both the Niger State and federal governments have benefitted over the past two decades.

“It is not in doubt that his reign has witnessed peace and prosperity in Kin Nupe and will continue to be a blessing to his people and to the nation’’, Idris said.

Similarly, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar-Bida, Sarkin Dawaki and Chairman, New Niger Development Projects Development also joined the multitude to celebrate Etsu Nupe.

“Your twenty-one years of visionary leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the progress of our great Nupe Kingdom’’, Abubakar-Bida said. (NANFeatures)
