Mr Adekoya Oluwagbemiga, Chief Executive Officer, Adbond, Nigeria’s pioneering Agro-to-Home Development Company, has emphasised the need to reawaken the interest of agriculture among youths to boost food production.

Oluwagbemiga said the call became pertinent to ensure food security and food sufficiency in the country.

He said this during a press conference to mark the company’s seventh year anniversary on Friday in Lagos.

Oluwagbemiga said Nigerians needed to embrace the fact that we were first farmers before any profession.

“We all should go back to promoting agriculture as our backbone in Nigeria.

“The truth is that agriculture from inception is the core profession of Africans and our forefathers that have been the source of our national, corporation, and individual prosperity .

“You can be a medical doctor, you can still own a farm, as a legal practitioner you can still own a farm, as a tech giant owning a farm doesn’t leave you out.

“Owning a farm is a simple task every generation of Africa needs to be part of starting from Nigeria in fulfilling the Nigeria purpose to aid its gross domestic product.

“No farm goes big without starting small and note you don’t have to buy it from Adbond, all you need is just start from where you are,” he said.

He said the company, since its inception, had embarked on initiatives to woo youths to agriculture.

He said the company had sensitised 50 people on gardening and global approach in solving food insecurity through its green wealth summit event where they gave out seeds to encourage people.

“Also, we have 2,000 youths employed both directly and indirectly as virtual staff, who work passionately to realise the vision and they remain the backbone of our success.

“We have also successfully awarded 10 outstanding students with lands through our academic excellence award programme, a platform for nurturing talents, learning and encouraging quality education.

“We have successfully empowered the lives of 600 corps members as landowners, which we call villa owners.

“By integrating agriculture and residential development, we not only redefine comfortable living but also pave the way for sustainable and prosperous communities in Africa,” he said.

According to him, the company’s vision and purpose is to promote wealth and unity from Nigeria and Africa.

“Our impact over the years cut across also fulfilling some sustainable development goals in the areas of zero hunger, no poverty, gender equality, quality education and economic growth and empowerment,” Oluwagbemiga added.

On his part, Mr Steven Awoyemi, Director of Agriculture for Adbond, called on governments to support farmers with grants to enable them venture into mechanised farming.

Awoyemi also urged the government to provide farmers with resources to market their produce to avoid wastage and loss. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

He said the visit was to pledge their support and readiness to work collaboratively with the minister to achieve the ministry’s mandate.

Efem appealed to the minister to support it in building capacities of social workers and support the professionalisation of the practice.

“We see this as the panacea to building a strong social work practice in Nigeria and in Africa at large,”he said.

He expressed the institute’s readiness to support the ministry’s programmes to professionalise social work practice and increase the army of professional social workers.

According to him, such collaboration would address the myriad of social ills affecting the country.

He said that the institute provides opportunities for intending social workers, to gain practical field experience through internships or participating in various activities and projects.

According to him, the projects can either be offered by the institute or in partnership with government agencies and international organisations.

Efem said “the organisation has been implementing the USAID/Fistula Projects in Nigeria since 2007.

He said the partnership had provided the project the avenue to introduce various social work skills building opportunities for Nigeria.

“The current USAID/MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics (MSSFPO), implemented by EngenderHealth provided the institute with a new strategy of rehabilitation and reintegration.

“This strategy fits perfectly with the activities of the ministry. So, we have been very excited to work as partners with the project and the ministry to expand the capacity building of social workers.

FG solicits 50 hectares of land from states for Renewed Cities

FG solicits 50 hectares of land from states for Renewed Cities

The Federal Government has solicited the release of 50 hectares of land by state governments to enable it actualise its Renewed Cities Agenda in housing delivery for citizens.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Mr Ahmed  Dangiwa, made this call when the Governor of Taraba, Dr Agbu Kefas, paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the present administration’s plan to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda for housing needed the support of states in the provision of land.

Dangiwa said that under the first phase of the project, government planned to build 34,500 houses nationwide using FMBN, FHA and Public Private Partnerships (PPP) to achieve this.

He said that decent, quality and affordable housing for all Nigerians was a major priority of the government, adding that the ministry was working with the National Population Commission (NPC) to establish the actual housing deficit.

“Our findings in house estimates show that for us to meet the housing needs of Nigerians, we need to build about 550,000 new homes per annum over the next ten years.

“That is the massive size of our housing challenge. At the average cost of N8 million this will require about N4.4 trillion per annum.

“Records show that over the past decades, the Federal Agencies, and the Ministry of Housing combined produce less than 15,000 housing units per year.

“A key reason for this is, of course, the big elephant in the room: inadequate access to finance.

“While this is true, I also believe that we have not been innovative enough in finding solutions to meet the challenge in a bold and audacious manner,” he said.

Dangiwa said the good news, however, was that President Bola Tinubu was a   proven game-changer who had demonstrated this in all of his policy announcements.

“So, as we acknowledge the challenge before us, we are not frightened by it. Rather, we see it as a golden opportunity to make a difference in the history of affordable housing in our country.

“Already, we have written letters to be sent to all the state governors seeking about 50 hectares of land for renewed hope cities.

“I’m sure that your Excellency will be kind and gracious enough to honour our request,” he said.

Earlier, the governor said that he had come to pay a solidarity visit and pledged his support to the minister to move the ministry forward.

Kefas said the minister was not alien to Taraba, adding that “it is a good place to invest.”

He, therefore, called for collaboration with the ministry in infrastructure development, especially in housing development.

“One of the things I want to bring to your notice is that you have a property in Jalingo and it has been there empty and nobody has occupied it and we do not want it to waste.

“So, we are requesting that we want to take over that property so that we will able to provide accommodation for our civil servants.

“Also, we are available to offer you any land in Taraba to be able to build anything that will benefit our people.

“We are also aware that the ministry has made provision to build a new Federal Secretariat in Taraba state.

“We are very happy about that initiative and we want to assure you that we are ready to give you our support whenever you are ready,” Kefas said.

He, therefore, urged the minister to ensure that the secretariat was built to accommodate all the state ministries. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Declare industrial sector a national priority, Aganga advises FG

Declare industrial sector a national priority, Aganga advises FG

Former Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Hon Olusegun Aganga, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare the industrial sector a national priority and back it up with plans, policies and funds.

Aganga said this at the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) 51st Annual General Meeting and 3rd Adeola Odutola Lecture/Presidential Luncheon on Thursday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event has its theme as: “Setting the Agenda for Competitive Manufacturing under the AfCFTA: What Nigeria needs to do”.

The former minister noted that industry multiplies national wealth, creates jobs, was critical for exchange rate and balance of payment management and would make the Naira stronger.

He assured that every Naira, no matter how large, that was well spent on strategic industrial sectors can be easily recovered and will deliver tremendous benefits to the economy and the nation.

Aganga urged government to address historical, economic, infrastructural, and political challenges that were crucial for increasing intra-African trade to levels comparable to intra-Asia and intra-European trade.

He stated that embracing competitive manufacturing, under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area(AfCFTA), was crucial for Nigeria’s economic growth and integration into the global marketplace.

According to him, Nigeria may not be able to compete with China now, but by investing in infrastructure, innovation, skilled labour, while addressing trade barriers, Nigeria can certainly position itself as the manufacturing hub in Africa.

“The AFCFTA is a landmark agreement that opens up a plethora of opportunities for intra-African trade and economic collaboration.

“Manufacturing plays a central role in the realisation of this agenda and in the modern global economy, industrial development is not luck, it is a nation’s choice.

“In today’s world, the fierce global competition has reduced the likelihood of the spontaneous development of next industry.

“Countries must therefore have an intentional, precise, and intense approach to nurturing and expanding industrial activities.

“This is even more paramount for a country like Nigeria, starting from a relatively low manufacturing base,” he said.

In his remarks, President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Otunba Francis Meshioye, acknowledged President Tinubu’s positive policy decisions and the redirection of the economy starting from his first day in office.

He noted that the journey of the association over past five decades has been one of grow innovation, and resilience, amid undeniably tough challenges.

Meshioye said Nigeria must rise up to the occasion given the promising growth trajectory and development opportunities embedded in the AfCFTA for industrial advancement of Africa.

“Manufacturing sector development is key to industrialisation. Sadly, the growth of industrialization in Nigeria arguably remains at very low ebb.

“Though the manufacturing sector is passing through hard and challenging times, setting a comprehensive and realistic agenda for the sector’s transformation will enhance its competitiveness and unlock its full potentials,” he said.

Responding, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister, Industry, Trade and Investment, restated government’s commitment to supporting the real sector via several fiscal and monetary initiatives.

Uzoka-Anite represented by Dr Rabiu Olowo, Director General, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, said government was ready to collaborate with manufacturers to enhance the country’s economic competitiveness.

She said to maximise the full potentials of the AfCFTA, government was committed to deploying four imperative initiatives.

“They are combined responsibility of government and manufacturing sector, robust public private partnership particularly area of research and development to enhance the strength of manufacturing.

“The third is supporting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) with capacity and potential for exports and investment in infrastructure and technology and enhancing quality standards for global competitiveness.

“Government is willing to support the establishment of research and development centres across the nation to enhance innovation and manufacturers should be encouraged to create these centres.

“We therefore urge manufacturers to promote regional value chains and industrial clusters particularly with the ongoing efforts to join the second phase of the guided trade initiative.

“Together, we can ensure that Nigeria’s manufacturing sector not only thrives but becomes a global benchmark for manufacturing, contributing to the growth of the continent and the globe,” he said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has said that the National Assembly would guarantee the welfare of staff of the assembly.

He made the remark at the 9th National and States Assembly Service Commissions Conference held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The conference was organised by the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).

Declaring the conference open, Akpabio who was represented by Sen. Danjuma Goje (APC-Gombe) said that the national assembly management was not unmindful of the welfare of the staff.

“I know the welfare issues you are battling with. But be rest assured that the 10th National Assembly has your back.

“Staff welfare will be supported by the assembly,” Akpabio said.

He said that in classical theory, the main role of parliament was to make new laws and change or improve old laws.

“But inclusively, we will not only make laws, change or improve old laws, we will make people, we will empower people.

“We will continue to support the training, retraining and capacity building of our staff. Charity is expected to begin at home.

“So, let’s have a team spirit and make our country proud, let us invest our time and energy into providing the best support for our legislators.

“This is so that hereafter, posterity will look back at the 10th National Assembly and State Assemblies and say truly, this was a turning point in our lawmaking in our country.”

Akpabio further said that the conference should lay the framework for the most effective parliament in Nigeria’s democratic governance.

“The choice is in your hands, you can only succeed if we see this conference not just as another talk-shop but as a wakeup call during the 10th National Assembly and change dynamics of lawmaking in our country.

“The time is now for us to heed our country’s call and come together as one. Sure, there are people dying from insecurity, from banditry, it is time for us to lend a hand.

“We have a government which has shown tremendous resolve to right what is wrong in our country.

“We have a national assembly which is committed to supporting all efforts to change the fortunes of our country and committed to making laws to lift up the poor and better the lots of all Nigerians,” he said.

The Executive Chairman of NASC,  Ahmed Amshi, said they were concerned with the State Assembly Service Commissions that was why they considered their operations.

“As usual, resolutions are expected to be agreed upon and a communique will be presented but we have entered into a partnership with National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Consultancy Services in the organisation of this conference.

“Most of the State Assembly Service Commissions have been in contact and shared ideas with us, we acknowledge them on this and hope that the mutual relationship is sustained.”

Also speaking,  Prof. Ayo Omotayo, the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) said that Nigeria must have a national focus to grow.

According to him, any country that is desiring to grow must have what he described as a national focus.

He said that lawmakers and staff of assemblies must work towards ensuring that whatever they do, is focused towards the growth and development of the country.

Omotayo said if Nigeria must be a better society, individuals must carry out personal responsibility geared towards ,’national focus’.

“If we are going to have a better society, every individual in Nigeria must carry a personal responsibility and pursue a national focus.

“The President is not the government, the Senate President and the speaker are not the government.

“We must play our roles as individuals. If not, we will continue to blame ourselves. A nation works for anyone that plays his or her part. Everyone must think about the Nigeria we need,” he said.(NAN)

He, however, urged NBRRI not to rest on its oars but strive more towards addressing other critical issues, begging for solutions in the road and building sectors of the Nigerian economy.

“One such challenge is addressing the growing menace of building and bridge collapse across the country.

“The collapse of buildings and bridges is not merely a matter of structural failure; it is a grave social, economic, and safety concern that demands our immediate and unwavering attention,” Nnaji said.

He said the ministry was aware of NBRRI’s challenges regarding the Institute’s Mandate, recruiting highly skilled research officers to drive the Institute, and low funding.

Nnaji said, “Regarding the Institute’s mandate, I am pleased to use my good office and every other means available to me to push for Mr President’s assent to the NBRRI Bill to enable its full use.

“Some of the research and development outputs by the institute are NBBRI Dismountable House (NDH), Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB), pozzolana which is an alternative to cement and Bamboo as reinforcement.

” Others include rubberised asphalt for road maintenance, natural bitumen mix design specification development for road construction fancy facing tiles, paving stones making machines and testing laboratories and equipment,” he said.
