“I did it for posterity and to  knock off the argument or remarks by some people that I didn’t do anything within the last 20 years as a  representative of FCT residents at the National Assembly.

“I want to be remembered for been very modest about some of my achievements which is  infrastructural development.

” I  have also realised that sometimes, if you don’t say what you are doing people will wonder what you have done and people will wonder and people will not know except the immediate benefiting communities.
“What I have done is to take you  round the projects I have done within the past few years and some people will wonder that within the past 20 years what have you been able to do,” Aduda said.

He added: “The more you stay as a legislator the more you have opportunities to be able  to attract so many things that are developmental to your people.
” For me, the  more a person gets reelected into the National Assembly, the more he or she garners  experience and needed contacts for facilitation of development – driven projects to his or her constituency as I have done for the people of FCT within the last 20years.”
Some residents interviewed expressed sadness over the failure of the Senator to secure his reelection bid at the Feb. 25 general election, as he lost to the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Ireti Kingibe.
Mr Dauda Babalola, a resident, said that the infrastructure development brought about by the Senator was unequalled especially in Jikwoyi.

Al-Habibiyyah charges Tinubu to tackle hunger, poverty, inflation headlong

By Salisu Sani-Idris

The Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society on Sunday in Abuja urged the President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu to prioritise the war against hunger, poverty and inflation as soon as he gets to the seat.

National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyyah Mosque, Imam Fuad Adeyemi, made the call at the 20th National Unity Ramadan Lecture organised by the society.

It had: “Ramadan Lessons: Inspiration for reform’’ as its theme.

Adeyemi emphasised the need for the president-elect to hit the ground running from the day he is sworn in.

“It is clearly seen by the blind and so audible by the deaf that there is poverty in the land; people are hungry and angry, inflation is so high and recently we started using naira to buy naira.

“He needs to work hard to reverse these unholy trends. Tinubu’s victory didn’t come to us as a surprise; he is known to be a talent hunter, a cerebral and compassionate leader.

“His tenacity and focus is enviable; his victory is testament of his years of investment in people and relationships,’’ the cleric said.

Adeyemi assured that Al-Habibiyyah, as an Islamic organisation would give all the necessary support to the incoming government as instructed in the Glorious Qur’an.

“Qur’an Chapter four, Verse 59 dictates that `believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and those from among you who are invested with authority,’ ‘’ Adeyemi noted.

He said the society fed at least 2,000 people at the end of every fasting day during Ramadan as part of efforts to ease difficulties among the less privileged.

“It is not a mistake that I use the word people and not fasting Muslims because over the years, not only Muslims had been benefitting from the programme.

“Non-Muslims are received with open hands and without discrimination at the feeding sessions conducted by the society’s Food Bank.

“Over the years, the first day of Ramadan usually recorded a relatively low turnout of people coming to break their fasts at the Food Bank, but the turnout peaks by the fourth or fifth day of Ramadan.

“We were marvelled this year; we prepared 1,000 meals and we were surprised that the first day turned out more than 2,000 persons, meaning this is a challenge.

“We have firm belief in Allah, that the challenge will be surmountable,’’ Adeyemi said.

Earlier, the guest lecturer, Prof. Usman Shu’aib, noted that circulation of wealth was the precursor of prosperity in nations.

Shu’aib, Director, International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, Bayero University, Kano, urged Muslims to allow Ramadan to pass through them to enable them to acquire all the necessary lessons and benefits.

“We can persevere in the 29 or 30 days of Ramadan, but we must fear Allah and endeavour to be pious throughout and beyond the month of Ramadan,’’ he admonished.

In his remarks, former Gov. Idris Wada of Kogi urged Muslims to maximise the benefits of the month of Ramadan by giving more charity to the less privileged, regular recitation of the Qur’an and other good deeds.

“My message is for us to learn the lessons of Ramadan, particularly during this fasting period; lessons of sacrifice, piety, worship and devotion to Almighty Allah,’’ he charged. (NAN) (www.nanews.ng)

Oxfam, others advocate gender advancement through technology

By Justina Auta

Oxfam Nigeria and Women in Information Technology and Communication (ICT), have advocated for more women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related fields to advance gender equity.

They made the call during an event, tagged “SHESHINES’’, to create more awareness on gender and creativity in Abuja.

The President, Women in ICT, Ms Kemisola Bolarinwa, stressed the need to encourage the society dismantle stereotypes and long-held beliefs on perceived appropriate careers meant for women and men.

According to her, women are often more productive in every areas, hence the need to increase their presence in technology, which will increase the turnout of inventions, innovative solutions and breakthrough in sciences.

Bolarinwa cited recent breakthrough in the early detection of cancer through the early cancer detection smart brassiere by her Women in ICT team as a perfect example of how creative women in the innovation space could be.

“Right now, the invention of the smart bra detects cancer.

“This cancer has been a disease that has been there for a very long time but even though we have a lot of men in the sciences, they couldn’t think through to solve women’s problem through technological invention.

“These are part of reasons why we need more women in STEM space generally,” she said.

She explained that the smartbra safely detects and monitors potential cancerous cells at an early form, which will reduce death rate by 80 per cent by 2030.

Prof. Olabisi Aina, Researcher and Lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, said the National Gender Policy aims to promote gender equality, women empowerment and human rights.

Aina, who led the 2006 Gender Policy for Nigeria, added that it would also provide platforms for more sectors of the economy such as the sciences, to key into the drive for gender mainstreaming.

“The National Gender Policy is an umbrella policy to which we expect that every sector, whether it is labour, environment, health and others, to key into and look at gender issues in their sectors and then draw policy guidelines in order to mainstream gender into what they do.

“Women are now competing with men in the workplace and do a variety of jobs from ICT to high profile corporate work.

“But in all of this, the environment of work is said for a long time to be very masculinised because men are in majority.

“Now that women are entering the labour sector, we recognise the need to make that workplace comfortable for men and women to work,’’ she said.

Also, Ms Esohe Ahior, a legal Practitioner and Head of Department, Poise Graduate Finishing Academy, highlighted the need to upscale youth in technology and innovation to advance their livelihood and enable them contribute to the economy.

Ahior revealed that through the support of OXFAM, they worked with Project Alliance Project to train girls in sectors like graphic design, reproductive health, among others to improve more participation of women in STEM fields as part of the International Women’s month.

According to her, over 190 marginalised girls who have been abused and who have become early mothers, and girls the economy has set aside as not being able to do things, have benefitted from the training.

“This training will help upscale girls in the technological field. Because in my organisation, women are doing more things in tech than men. Women are the lead trainers in tech, graphic designers, photographers.

“It is an eye opener and shows that women are just as hungry to be in tech space like the men, and some are even surpassing the men,’’ she said.

She added that women in STEM field have shown the strength, commitment and tenacity to even supercede societal expectations and the men in technology innovation.

NAN reports that other highlights were poetry recitations, music performances and presentations by various outstanding women and female groups. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Ruth Oketunde

A development expert and researcher, Dr Nkemdilim Ene, has advised the in-coming administration to leverage on women to take development faster to grassroots communities in Nigeria.

Ene gave the advice in Abuja on Sunday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the expectations of Nigerian women as the country gets set to inaugurate a new government on May 29.

On Feb. 25, Nigeria held a landmark presidential election, to keep democracy going in Africa’s most populous nation, which returned to elective governance in 1999 after years of military rule.

“Research has shown that the inclusion of women in leadership has contributed significantly to socio-economic growth.

“This shows that sustainable national development requires the contributions of women,’’ said Ene, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Preston Associates International Development Ltd., an Abuja-based think-thank.

She described womenfolk as the magic wand that could be used by the government to engender development and make Nigeria to rise above its current challenges.

“I appeal to government to be deliberate in encouraging women and girls to partake in digital opportunities available to them because this can change lives of women and that of their immediate communities.’’

The researcher said that government should also find ways to utilise the opportunities offered by technology as a tool in promoting gender equality in Nigeria.

“It can be as simple as increasing access to smart phones, cash transfers and digital financial literacy skills that can strengthen women’s decision-making abilities and enhance bargaining power in their homes,’’ Ene advised.

Commenting on the just-concluded International Women’s Day, Ene said that the lot of women in Nigeria was getting brighter, “although a lot still has to be done.

“The theme for this year’s celebration – `DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’ underscores the need to equip our women with technological know-how,’’ she stated.

The youthful Ene, who holds a bachelor of medicine and surgery degree also has expansive experience in public health and gender issues. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

I remain APGA Chairman – Oye

61 total views today

By Angela Atabo

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Dr Victor Oye says his position as the party’s chairman is not in dispute because the Supreme Court has not delivered a fresh judgement on the matter.
Oye said this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the briefing was to make some clarifications on the rumours that the Supreme Court had given fresh judgement on the chairmanship tussle between himself and Mr Edozie Njoku which was settled on Oct.14,2021.

He said that the supreme only sat on Friday to correct a clerical error.

He said that following a judgement which purportedly affirmed the factional National Convention of APGA held in Owerri,Imo, he approached the Court of Appeal in Kano to set aside the judgement.

He said that consequent upon that, the Court of Appeal delivered a judgement on Aug.10 ,2021 which allowed the Appeal Court to set aside the judgment of the Jigawa High Court and the Supreme Court also upheld the Appeal Court’s judgement on Oct.14 ,2021.

He said that it was an act of mischief for people to contemplate that the Supreme Court delivered another judgement on March 24.

“The news have been going around about a purported judgement by the Supreme Court today ; there was no judgement by the Supreme Court. No fresh judgement by the Supreme Court at all.

“The Supreme Court sat today for less than 10 minutes, to correct a clerical error on page 13 of the judgement that they delivered on Oct. 14, 2021.

” What was the clerical error? At the Jigawa Birnin Kudo High Court, Edozie Njoku’s name was mentioned there as having purported suspended by the party,a fact alleged in the summons filed at the Jigawa High Court which was thrown away by the Appeal Court Kano.

“So that clerical error was just on page 13 of the judgment of the Supreme Court, just one name ,Edozie Njoku to replace my name there because my name was not mentioned at the Birnin Kudo High Court.

“This is because I have never been suspended by anybody; I have always been the National Chairman of the party because I was duly elected by a national convention of the party held on May 31, 2019 in Akwa monitored by INEC,” he said.

He reiterated that on Oct. 14 2021, the Supreme Court affirmed the judgement of Court of Appeal Kano after the appeal affirmed him as National Chairman, resting on the judgement of an Awka High Court which had not been appealed till date.

He said there was no basis for a fresh case because the Supreme Court had affirmed the judgement of the Court of Appeal and dismissed all applications for joinder.

“It was dismissed ,so there was no way the Supreme Court would have sat in judgement over its own judgement , because as far as we are concerned that judgement is Res judicata ,it has been dealt with and gone forever,so Njoku cannot be Chairman.”

Oye expressed disappointment over some media reports on the issue which were without clarification or balancing, adding that the story indicating fresh judgement was fake news.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Ijeoma Olorunfemi

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) said that gender equality in the digital space could increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country by over 50 per cent.

Mallam Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of NITDA said this on Friday at the closing ceremony of its ‘Fasaha Gina Mata, Gina Al-Umma’, digital skills programme in Abuja, in collaboration with World Bank and Natview Technology.

The NITDA,Fasaha Gina Mata Gina Al-Umma is a digital skills training programme to equip young women with the relevant skills they need to succeed in the digital world.

The four-day programme was held as part of the activities from the agency to celebrate the International Women’s Day, as well as the month.

Inuwa recalled research by Mckinsey Global Institute which said that placing women together with their male counterparts would increase the global GDP to about 18 trillion USD in 2025.

“The research was narrowed to some countries which included Nigeria and it said that if we can achieve gender equality, we can add to the Nigerian GDP 299 billion by 2025.

“Within our own mandate, implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy,we are working on so many initiatives.

“One of them is the National Digital Skills Strategy, which World bank has keyed into as one of the implementation partners.

“Under that strategy, we want to achieve 95 per cent digital literacy, we want to position Nigeria to become global talent factory,’’ Inuwa said.

The director-general said that looking at the global talent factory and according to research by Korn Ferry, a global organisational consulting firm, by 2030 there would be 85 million talent deficit globally.

He further said the deficit would result to 8.5 trillion USD unrealised annual revenue.

Inuwa added that deploying the Gig economy strategy which he explained as leveraging the power of information technology to work remotely, do freelance work could help the country position for revenue globally.

He also said that with the Gig economy and having skills like content creation, digital marketing could help one use digital platforms to promote their businesses.

“If Nigeria can position itself, we can be part of this, we can have Nigeria be part of the Gig economy and working remotely.

“We can be part of the global value chain working remotely from Nigeria for European countries, the US companies, Asian companies and programmes like this will help us achieve that,’’ Inuwa said.

The director-general added that they were initiating programmes that were women based to encourage more female participation and digital literacy among women.

He decried that from November 2022 to-date, the agency had trained 226,000 young Nigerians on various digital skills but women represented only 28 per cent of the figure.

The NITDA boss said that the idea was to achieve 95 per cent digital literacy by 2030 which was kick-started with the Gina Mata programme to train 800 young women in the pilot programme.

Inuwa further said the training would accord the participants access to education, job opportunities, access to information, enable them learn to protect their data against threats and promote gender equality.

Mr Nuradeen Maidoki, Chief Executive Officer of Natview Technology, the implementing partner, said Fasaha Gina Mata, Gina Al-umma was translated as ‘Building Women, Empowering Communities.’

Maidoki said that they intended to create a chain of highly skilled female technologists who could contribute to innovation and growth in Nigeria’s technology industry.

“We believe that by empowering young women with digital skills, we can create a more inclusive and diverse technology industry that reflects the richness and diversity of our society,’’ he said.

Maidoki added that the additional 600 young women would be trained from Borno, Gombe, Kano and Zamfara.

He said that they were working with SheCluded, a digital financial company for women that would be ensuring mentorship, helping the women access loans and grants where needed.

Two participants, Miss Adewumi Adekola and Mrs Hajara Musa-Mohammed, said that with the knowledge they acquired, they would be financial assets to their families and the country.

Certificates of participation were also issued to the participants. (NAN)

A Muslim cleric, Sheikh Yahya Al-Yolawi, on Friday in Abuja urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to improve electronic banking services to ease the lives of citizens.

Al-Yolawi, who is the Chief Imam, Jumma’at Mosque, Area 10, Garki, Abuja, made the call while delivering his Jumma’ah Sermon, entitled: “Etiquettes of Ramadan Fast’’.

He said the Muslim faithful were expected to support the needy in the society most especially during the holy month of Ramadan to ease their lives.

Al-Yolawi regretted that the cash crunch was making life more miserable in the country.

The cleric, however, commended the CBN and the Federal Government for the recent enhanced circulation of the Naira notes in the country.

“This is to appreciate the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the recent increase in the circulation of Naira notes in the country.

“But still cash remain expensive commodity and issue of the network on money transfer is still something that the Federal Government need to look in to,” Al-Yolawi advised.

He called on Muslims to increase their chances of getting rewards and achieving maximum benefits of the precious month of Ramadan which comes once annually.

According to him, fasting is among the greatest things that help in controlling desires, suppressing lusts, purifying souls and restricting Muslims to what pleases Allah.

“The fasting person prevents his tongue from engaging in idle speech, abuse, defaming people, and spreading harmful backbiting and tale bearing.

“Fasting prevents the fasting person from cheating, deceit, giving less than due, guile, committing immorality, usury, bribery and unjustly consuming the money of people through any means or kind of fraud,’’ he said.

Al-Yolawi also emphasised the need for every Muslim to strive to feed a Muslim at the time of the breaking of fast.

“Anybody who offers meal for the breaking of the fast of another person earns the same rewards as the one who was observing the fast without taking in any way the reward of the fasting person,’’ the chief imam admonished. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Gabriel Agbeja

The Federal Government on Thursday in Abuja said it would invest more in meteorological data generation to improve weather prediction across the country.

Prof. Mansur Matazu, the Director-General, Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) made the promise during his keynote address on the occasion of the World Meteorological Day.

Matazu , who was represented by Prof. Effiom Oku, NiMet Director, Research and Traning, said the Federal Government had been investing in meteorological data generation over land, water and in the atmosphere.

The theme of the event is  “The future of weather, climate and water across generations“.

“The data generated are so critical for past assessments and future predictions including forecasting.

” In NiMet, we have placed special importance in the future generations by working with the young minds in the country.

“ Usually, our weather observers are largely youths who begin their careers in the field of meteorology at a very young age.

“Similarly, we have designed, developed and implemented a programme called Young Meteorological Ambassadors whose members are here today, “ he said.

He said the agency had signed Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with several universities in Nigeria to promote the science of meteorology within the academic institutions at tertiary level to support national and regional development.

He said that NiMet continued to render services in support of aviation, agriculture, construction, tourism, defence, water resources management, telecommunications, environment and communications among others.

According to him, the development of NiMet`s products and services include the effective utilisation of young minds as well as the experienced ones within the agency creating innovations “to what it does and how it does them”.

“This has positively impacted on our routine publications and on-demand services such as the Seasonal Climate Prediction as part of the Agency’s meteorological Early Warning System in line with the United Nations Early Warning for ALL.

“Other products and services include Hydrometeorological Bulletin, Annual State of  Climate report in Nigeria, Agrometeorological Bulletin, Climate and Health Bulletin, Daily weather outlooks and bulletins, TV weather forecasts, Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts, Marine Bulletin, and impact-Based Weather Forecast.

“Multitudes of other routine and on-demand products and services cutting across all socio-economic sectors, “ he said.

The NiMet boss said the agency was also working to preserve its past resources in terms of publications and instrumentation, while developing new ones to provide a robust knowledge base for the upcoming generations.

He urged every Nigerian to invest in future generations and create awareness on the dangers of climate change such as extreme weather and loss of livelihoods by making the World a safer place for All.

Contributing, Dr Bernard Gomez, WMO representative North Central and West Africa, said science and innovation were also key tools to scale up the contribution of weather and climate services to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“ We all must continue to remember that climate change threatens the achievement of many of these goals and indeed our individual plans.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the world celebrates Meteorological Day on  March 23 of every year.

The day commemorates the coming into force on March  23, 1950 of the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organisation.

The National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) around the world have continued to monitor through observation (air, land and water) the weather and climate.

“Also providing evidence of the changing climate and leading actions through prediction towards adaptation, mitigation and creation of resilient societies. “ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
