Residents of Damgma and Wupa communities in Jiwa and Gwagwa wards of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) have commended the chairman of the area council for executing people-centered projects in their communities.

“This community has never seen a chairman so closer to his people in terms of rural projects provision.

“The provision of water is very essential as it would save every member of this community from diseases and reduce all forms of water related diseases in the community.

“We have waited for the provision of borehole in this community for decades, all to no avail, but we thank God for bringing the chairman to fulfill our desire,” he said.

Similarly, Mr Uzor Daniel, a resident of Wupa community, commended the chairman for installing rural electricity in the community, adding that it would boost their businesses.

“Businesses in the community will boom and both Indigenes and non-indigenes will get power supply for the first time.

“We have all decided to give him every support he needs and we are very thankful and excited.

“This is what government is all about. Providing the needs of the people and bringing government very close to the people at the grassroot,” he said.

Speaking, Mr Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman of AMAC advised the residents to protect and maintain government facilities in their domain.

NNPP FCT Senatorial candidate rejects outcome of NASS election

By Naomi Sharang

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has rejected the outcome of the National Assembly elections in the Federal Capital Territory and proceeded to the tribunal to seek redress.

The party alleged that the process that produced Ireti Kingibe, the candidate of the Labour of Party (LP) as Senator-elect for the FCT was marred by irregularities.

Mr Mubarak Tijjani, the NNPP’s party senatorial candidate in the FCT, said this at a news conference held in Abuja, on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on Feb. 25, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mrs Ireti Kingibe of the LP as the winner of the FCT Senate seat.

Ireti scored 202,175 votes to emerge winner, adding that Sen. Philip Aduda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and incumbent senator came second with 100,544 votes.

“Mr Angulu Dobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) placed third with 78,905 votes.”

Tijjani claimed that the election was marred by irregularities ranging from over voting and the omission of NNPP’s logo from the ballot paper.

“We were sabotaged; all our efforts were sabotaged and undermined.

“I’m not trying to throw allegations but it is clear to everybody in FCT that LP and the INEC have played some certain role of sabotaging our efforts in NNPP.

“Our logo was changed on the ballot paper, which was something that has caused NNPP a great loss in the 2023 general elections that we will never forget.

“That is why I’m challenging the result that brought Ireti Kingibe as the Senator-elect. This is not a true democracy. Democracy did not play doing the 2023 general election,” he said.

Tijjani also said that the Agent’s tag for his party was not provided..

“A day to the election, they told us they forgot to print the entire tags for FCT.

“We were trying to improvise, the following morning we saw other party agents with their tags.

“By the time our agents who had trained to protect their votes, came to their polling units to do their assignment, they were only sent away by other party agents.

“We are highly disappointed in LP and we are not going to relent. We have to seek for justice not just for ourselves, for our people, for our supporters but for our democracy,” he said.(NAN)

Foundation advocates prevention, treatment of tuberculosis to mitigate deaths

The U.S.A-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), an NGO, on Thursday called on governments and world leaders to prioritise the prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis to mitigate avoidable deaths in Nigeria.

AHF’s Programme Director in Nigeria, Dr Echey Ijezie, made the call in a statement it issued in Abuja to herald the 2023 World Tuberculosis Day.

The World Tuberculosis Day is commemorated annually on March 24 to elicit support for tuberculosis sufferers.

It is also commemorated to encourage world leaders to focus on ending the disease that is 100 per cent preventable and treatable.

The theme for the 2023 Tuberculosis Day is: “Yes! We Can End Tuberculosis.’’

In commemorating the Day, AHF called on heads of states to attend the United Nations High-Level meeting on Tuberculosis in September to show their commitment to ending tuberculosis in their countries.

Tuberculosis is a serious infection of the lungs caused by a bacterium that spreads through tiny droplets, released in the air when a sufferer coughs or sneezes.

“Ending tuberculosis in Nigeria must come with intensified level of case finding and patients who show up in hospitals to embrace treatment, which is free across health facilities in the country.

“Importantly, we must increase funding available to tuberculosis, improve the level of education and awareness as well as engage the rising incidence of stigma related to the disease,’’ Ijezie said in the statement.

Ijezie decried the listing of Nigeria by the WHO as one of the 10 countries accounting for 64 per cent of the global gap in tuberculosis case finding.

He stressed that Nigeria’s situation required urgent attention as the WHO also listed it alongside India and Indonesia as accounting for almost half of the total gap in case finding.

In the statement also, AHF’s Chief Global Advocacy and Policy, Mr Terri Ford, said the foundation was focusing on tuberculosis by educating its staff members and clients and by providing tuberculosis screening in its clinics.

“The Foundation is also prioritising prevention and treatment of HIV and tuberculosis co-infection, which is one of the main causes of death of people living with HIV.

“AHF urges all government and public health institutions to do their part to ensure tuberculosis research, prevention, and treatment programmes are fully funded and supported.

“We all must do more to finally stop tuberculosis worldwide, particularly in lower-income countries,’’ Ford said.

The AHF stated that tuberculosis claimed 1.6 million lives in 2021, the year when more than 10 million new infections were recorded, yet it remained woefully neglected and underfunded in many countries.

“Even as tuberculosis is a global epidemic, more than 95 per cent of deaths occur in lower-income countries.

“WHO estimated that finances were less than 40 per cent of what was needed to prevent and treat tuberculosis in 2022.

“The time is now for heads of state to urgently focus efforts on tuberculosis prevention and mitigate millions of avoidable deaths,’’ it stressed.

AHF is a global non-profit organisation providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy for more than 1.7 million people in 45 countries, including Nigeria. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Ahmed Ubandoma

Dr Emem Omokaro, the Director General of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) says the centre will continue to collaborate with other relevant agencies to improve the health and well-being of senior citizens in the country.

Omokaro stated this on Wednesday shortly after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Ministry of Health and the NSCC in Abuja.

The MoU was signed during a stakeholder’s engagement on the development of National Benchmark for the training of caregivers to older persons.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the MoU is aimed at developing a National Action Plan on the care of older persons in the Healthcare sector.

She said that the meeting consideref the state of care services for older persons and built a consensus that older persons have a right to dignity and security.

According to her, the centre will ensure the training of caregivers and examine their capacities and their competencies as well as the Care Agency Operators to ensure that effective result was achieved.

The D-G said the centre had carefully considered the relative challenges and the cultural background in line with global best practice.

Omokaro said the centre was determined to deliver a sustainable process and secure care services toward building the ultimate care system for the betterment of older persons in Nigeria.

“ In Nigeria as in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, families provide the majority of care for older persons, the number of older people in Nigeria is growing rapidly.

“The latest survey 2022 by NBS shows an increase of two million from 14.8 million in 2019 and it is expected to double by 30 million in the year 2050.

“ The conflicts of family caregivers and other non-cultural factors with insufficient support systems for older persons, increasing the care burden of a few family caregivers who provide care without any training or support,“ she said.

Also, the representative of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Nasir Sani Gwarzo, commended the centre for mapping out a unique strategy towards achieving healthcare services to older persons in the country.

Gwarzo urged the stakeholders to also consider the plight of older persons “who are victims of natural disasters”.

He, therefore, expressed readiness to support the centre in its determination to deliver quality health for senior citizens in line with its mandate.

Similarly, the representative of the Minister of Health, Dr John Ovuvoroye assured the centre of the ministry’s commitment to providing strong synergy toward achieving improved healthcare for older persons in line with universal health coverage.

Ovuvoroye said the MoU would further strengthen the collaboration with the centre for the benefit of older persons. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng).

Elections: Kukah Centre trains stakeholders on peace, conflict management

By Stephen Adeleye

The Kukah Centre (TKC) has organised a regional two-day capacity building for stakeholders in North Central on ‘Peace and Conflict Management’, under its Independent State Based Peace Architecture (ISPA).

Speaking at the training centre on Wednesday in Lokoja, Mr Lawson Eselebor, the Project Manager, TKC, said the peace capacity building was an extension of the National Peace Committee to facilitate and advocate overall peace in Nigeria.

Eselebor said the participants would be introduced to practical conflict resolution techniques and strategies to effectively utilise when managing conflict.

Eselebor said the initiative was meant to build capacity of the stakeholders as a result of the fallout from the just concluded general elections in the country.

“There are some consequences from the results of the elections, because we have violence before, during and after the elections at different locations across the country.

”We know that conflict which is the focus for this training is inevitable, with both positive and negative outcomes but it depends on how you manage the situation.

”If conflict is properly managed with the right tools, techniques and approach, then the results will be favourable.

”But when you avoid conflicts or apply the wrong tools and techniques, they cause violence, destructions, killings as we have seen in these elections,” he said.

Eselebor said the training would empower stakeholders to see within their local content how they could manage whatever conflict that might arise after the elections.

He said the stakeholders in Kogi would work for peace in the upcoming governorship election in the state to prevent conflicts to the barest minimum before, during and after the election.

”We all know the role the National Peace Committee plays in trying to broker peace in the country and exploring peace meetings with political parties and their candidates.

”So, we are trying to replicate that at the various state levels because of peculiarities of each state through conflict resolution mechanisms.

”Over 600 persons would be trained on peace building in each state on conflict management and the roles that communication plays in conflict management.

”This is the first regional training taking place in Lokoja for 50 participants from five states namely: Kogi, Benue, Nasarrawa, Kwara and Oyo.

”We will also engage those in North East, North West, South East, South West, and South South,” Eselebor said.

One of the facilitators, a legal practitioner, Gloria Ballason, said the major cause of crisis in political scene was the absence of justice and accountability.

”There cannot be peace without justice, and there cannot be justice without truth, and there cannot be truth without objectivity and courage.

”So, except we are able to apply those key components to the peace architecture in Nigeria, it will be difficult to have sustainable peace.

Ballason, who is a Short Term Expert for The Kukah Peace Project, stressed the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to discharge its obligation as an independent body by declaring election results that reflect the vote of the people.

She noted that outcomes of elections should not be all about going to court but about accountability, saying the huge money allocated to INEC to run elections should be justified.

According to her, the job of INEC is not just to count the votes but to also account for the votes to ensure fairness and justice.

Ballason urged political parties to take responsibility through in-house cleansing that would ensure the right things were done.

”It is also important that citizens take responsibility and ownership of the process of peace that is predicated on justice,” she said.

Ballason urged political parties in the upcoming Kogi Governorship election not to manipulate the process by putting party interest above national interest and that of the voters to freely choose their leaders.

Two of the participants, Ronke Adegoke from Kwara , and Mr Salaudeen Aliyu from Kogi, both said the training had broadened their knowledge on peace and conflict management.

They promised to cascade the peace capacity training and make meaningful impact in their various communities and localities. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Nigerians in UK raise funds to tackle Nigeria’s out-of- school crisis

By Ruth Oketunde

Nigerians in the UK have raised about N23 million in their bid to start tackling the out-of-school problem in Nigeria which has forced 20.2 million kids out of school.

The amount was raised at the Fourth Annual Black-Tie Charity Ball, staged by the international charity, IA-Foundation in London on Wednesday.

In an e-mail to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the event, the Chief Executive Officer of IA-Foundation, Mrs Ibironke Adeagbo, said the event was attended in full force by Nigerians from all walks of life in the UK.

She said that Nigerians attended the event in their numbers, to show their solidarity with the efforts of IA-Foundation to tackle the menace of young people staying out of school in the West African nation.

Nigeria, which is Africa’s top petroleum exporter has a huge population of its younger population currently out of school, according to UN agency, UNESCO.

However, the British-registered IA-Foundation has risen to the challenge since 2019 in a bid to tackle the problem and get the international community and the Nigerian government to rise to the challenge.

In a speech she delivered at the charity ball, Adeagbo reiterated the need for people of goodwill to help Nigeria to salvage the future of its children.

She said there was need for Nigerians everywhere in the world to make collaborative social investments in the education sector to put every Nigerian kid in classroom.

Adeagbo noted that no effort should be spared in ensuring that the 20.2 million out-of-school children in Nigeria were given opportunities to have access to quality education.

She urged Nigerians in the diaspora to be part of the army of impact makers, contributing to secure the future of not just children but Nigeria at large.

Speaking on “Securing the Future: the Imperative of Quality Education for All’’, Prince Afolabi Andu, the founder of the Nigerian Global Business Forum, said that providing education for a child in a family could be the game-changer for generations in that family.

He described Nigerians as people with great potential to thrive and excel if given the opportunity.

Andu appealed to wealthy individuals and corporate bodies to create opportunities for thousands of children on Nigerian streets by supporting education initiatives for the poor.

In a goodwill message, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria lauded IA-Foundation for bringing the attention of the world to the state of education in Nigeria.

He said that it was not enough to send a child to school but it is more important to examine the quality of education that the child is receiving.

“It is important to have teachers, facilities and the curriculum, to give quality education to every learner.

“In Nigeria, we have horizontal inequalities where certain regions are more disadvantaged than others with Northern Nigeria having the highest rate of out-of-school children,’’ Sanusi said.

Earlier in a message, the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Amb. Sarafa Ishola, stressed the need to give quality education to the younger segment of the Nigerian population.

“A huge number of our children are not getting education and those being educated are harvested by other countries,’’ he stated.

The Chairman of the board of IA-Foundation, Mr Jide Olagundoye, commended the foundation for the impact it was making over the years in tackling the out-of-school crisis in Nigeria.

He assured that the foundation would continue to make the difference for less-privileged Nigerian kids to give them assured future.

NAN learnt that more than 250 Nigerians residing in the UK attended the event, which also featured side-attractions, including raffle draw and American auction. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CODE expresses concern over ethnic profiling in 2023 general elections

37 total views today

By Angela Atabo

Connected Development (CODE),a civil society organisation, has expressed concern over ethnic profiling of some groups in the 2023 General Elections and urged Nigerians to embrace unity in nation’s interest.

Chief Executive of CODE, Hamzat Lawal, said this on Tuesday in Abuja at a news conference to present the organisation’s findings on the 2023 General elections.

Lawal said that CODE and its 20,000 observers were at the forefront of the poll and have followed the process religiously with the deployment of CODE’s Uzabe platform.

“We speak against the ethnic profiling that took place in most parts of the country and how we must shun these things as a country.

“We must see ourselves as humans; yes, each and every one of us is from a village or a community but Nigeria as a whole has united us.

“We cannot target people because of their choice, their language or because of the region that they come from.

“If we continue this way,it will consume each and every one of us, so we hope that our political, traditional and religious leaders can douse the tension and call people to order,” he said.

Lawal said there was need for Nigerians to be united and remain peaceful.

He said that CODE’s observations revealed that in spite of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC’s) acclaimed readiness to host the presidential election on Feb.25 it fell shot of expectations in terms of logistics.

He however, commended the commission for correcting the shortfall during the governorship election as polls started very early in more than 70 per cent polling units monitored across the country.

He said that there were some critical incidences that that undermined the success of the governorship and State Assembly elections.

Lawal listed electoral violence ,ballot box snatching ,attacks on observers and journalists ,low voter turnout, ethnic profiling among others.

He also expressed disappointment at the way some security agencies reacted to the issue of electoral violence, adding that some of them seemed to have been compromised.

He said that although the 2022 Electoral Act was a good amendment, it failed to deliver on the electoral system due to human interference.

He said that the 10th National Assembly would have a critical role to play in the amendment of the Electoral Act, particularly on how to unbundle INEC as an institution.

“This is because in our democracy and our politics, election is the first step and if we get it wrong, then our democracy will be in shambles and Nigerian people will not enjoy the dividends.

“In unbundling INEC as an institution, first ,we will need to look at how the National Chairman of INEC,the National Commissioners emerge and most importantly, how to Resident Electoral Commissioners emerge and who are they answerable to.

“This is because today, what we have seen is that the institution as a whole and the people there have been compromised, some are placeholders for corrupt politicians.’’

Lawal said that there was need to unbundle INEC and make it truly independent without outside interference with its duties.

He also stressed the need for the commission to step up its result collation process.

“ I think that as we reform the institution and provide reform on the Electoral Act for every result that would be uploaded should have the signature of every party agent,’’he said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
