The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, has commended the International Centre for Islamic Culture and Education (ICICE), custodian of Al-Noor mosque, Abuja, for promoting Islamic culture and education in West Africa.

Bello made the commendation at the 10th Anniversary of ICICE and Al-Noor Mosque Dinner in honour of major donors of its ongoing expansion project to increase the capacity of the mosque from 1,000 to 12,000 worshippers, held on Saturday in Abuja.

Represented by Alhaji Mukhtar Galadima, the Director, Department of Development Control of FCTA, the minister said the centre had become a hub for scholars, researchers and students of Islamic studies, who come from far and wide to learn about the rich heritage and teachings of Islam.

Bello observed that in last decade, the centre has also successfully organised numerous conferences, workshops and seminars, aimed at promoting peace, tolerance and understanding among different religious communities.

“Over the last 10 years the Centre has made tremendous strides in promoting Islamic culture and education, not just in Nigeria, but also in the wider West African region.

“Your contributions have made it possible for the centre to achieve its mission, provide meals and medical outreach for those in need and we remember very well your generous contributions during our fight against COVID-19.

“Your contributions without doubt have provided the centre with the resources it needs to continue its important work, expand its programmes and to bring its services to even more people.”

The minister also commended the centre’s flagship school, the Al-Noor Academy, which had become one of the best educational institutions in the FCT, renowned for positively moulding the character and intellect of young Nigerians who pass through its walls.

“Through its efforts I am also informed, the centre has become a platform for inter-faith dialogue, where people of different beliefs can come together to learn from each other and find common ground.

“This plays well with the principles on which the FCT is founded; which is unity, tolerance and the indivisibility of our country and we are proud to be associated with the laudable achievements of the ICICE in this regard.

“It is on this premise that I once again congratulate Prof. Ibrahim Sulaiman, the Chairman Board of Trustees of the ICICE, other members of the board as well as its management and staff for their efforts in living up to the ideals of this institution.”

Earlier, the Founder of the mosque and the centre, Alhaji Aminu Baba-Kusa, while reflecting on the mandate, vision and mission of the ICICE, said: “I’m intrigued by the laudable achievements recorded so far, which are in line with my vision and aspirations.”

Represented by his son, Alhaji Mahmud Baba-Kusa, he also expressed delight on reflecting where the centre was 10 years ago, “where we are now and where we’re going.

“I can see the centre touching the life of the community through the provision of quality education, authentic Islamic knowledge and the propagation of knowledge on Islamic Banking and Finance, and related Capital Market products.

“Today we are celebrating the contributions made by the donors for Al-Noor Masjid Expansion project. The trajectory is to increase the capacity from 1,000 to 12,000 worshippers.

“This is indeed a remarkable milestone that should be supported and celebrated. It is a very joyful day for me and pray to Allah SWT for a successful completion of this project.”

On his part, Dr Mele Kyari, the Chairman, ICICE Advisory Committee and Group Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd., enjoined all Muslims to endeavour to secure a house for themselves in paradise by contributing towards the completion of the ongoing Al-Noor masjid expansion project.

Kyari assured that the committee would intensify efforts and continue to reach out to the Muslims to donate and support the project.

The Director-General of the centre, Dr Kabir Usman, also commended the major donors who earlier contributed about N2.2 billion to the ongoing project which was on course.

“Initially, we booked, planned and asked for donation of about N3.15 billion and at a go we generated about N2.2 billion and now we are on course but we know the prices of building materials and whatever has increased.

“So, we are targeting completing the project by the end of this year when we have to spend positively between N5 and N6 billion and that is the challenges that we have got and that is why we said people should contribute in cash and also in kind.

“Therefore, we need to celebrate that success and tell them what we have done with their money because transparency and accountability is a critical ingredient if we want to imbibe the culture of honesty and integrity, and that is what we have done today.”

The former Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr Shamsudeen Usman, who stressed the importance of transparency and accountability, assured donors that their money was being utilised properly.

He explained that the project was being implemented with the best international standard, adding that when the project s completed “we will do a detail technical report”.

Sen. Mohammed Sanusi Dagash, former Minister of Works, also said “it is in the interest of all muslims to support our religion so that those who will come after us will meet a responsible society.

“We are here to ensure that the project succeed and impact positively on the lives of the Muslim community.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards to those who contributed immensely to the growth and development of the masjid and the centre since inception. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Islamic cleric tasks Muslims on noble character

An Abuja-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahya Al-Yolawi, on Friday emphasised the need for Muslims to exhibit good character in dealings with all human beings regardless of their social status in the society.

Al-Yolawi, who is the Chief Imam of Nurul Yaqeen Jumma’at Mosque Life Camp Abuja, gave the advice while delivering his Jumma’at sermon titled,” the Significance of Good Manners in Islam.”

The cleric said that good character would be the heaviest righteous deed to be placed on a person’s scale of deeds on the day of judgement.

According to him, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)said no deed would be placed on the scale of deeds on the day of judgement will be heavier than good character.

Al-Yolawi added: “Indeed, a person with good character will attain the rank of those with a good record of voluntary fasts and prayers.

” It is one of the deeds that leads people to enter paradise the most.

“When the Prophet was asked about which act leads people to enter paradise the most, he replied, piety and good character.”

Al-Yolawi said that perfection of noble character was one of the most important objectives of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mission to the world.

He said: “The Prophet Muhammad once declared I have been sent to perfect noble character.

“This statement makes it clear that one of the reasons behind the Prophet’s mission was to elevate and perfect the moral character of the individual and society.

“Noble character is part and parcel of belief when asked about the best of the believers, the Prophet replied that they are those who have the best characters and manners.

” In fact, the Qur’an uses the comprehensive Arabic word birr to refer to faith. As the Qur’an stated righteousness (birr) does not lie in turning your faces during prayer to the East or to the West.

“Rather, those with true devoutness are the ones who believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book and the Prophets.”

According to Al-Yolawi every time Allah commands the believers to perform an act of worship, He draws their attention to its moral significance or its positive effect on the individual and society.

The cleric said: “Examples of this are numerous and include the followings; the prayer: “ establish the prayer, for the prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds.”

Al-Yolawi also said the Muslim faithful pay the obligatory charity payment, Zakkat from their wealth to purify and cleanse themselves with the act.

He added: “Besides showing kindness and giving comfort to people, zakaat refines benefactor’s character and purges it from evil practices.

” Indeed, noble character characterised muslims’ relationship with all members of society: There is no difference whatsoever between rich and poor, black and white, Arab and non-Arab, or a prince and a pauper.

” Allah commands us to show kindness and courtesy to everyone without exception, for justice, kindness and mercy are aspects of good character which a muslim observes in his words and deeds with Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

” A Muslim ought to embody good character traits as a means to call others to this great religion of Islam and noble character is not confined only to human beings.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of Power, Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu, on Friday said that patience and tolerance were key to a successful marriage.

Aliyu made the remark shorty after the wedding fatiha of the son of the late Yobe Governor, Sen. Mamman-Ali, Alhaji Abdallah Mamman-Ali and Aisha Bello, held at Al-Noor Mosque, in Abuja.

The minister, who noted that marriage was a serious business, enjoined the groom to ensure a barrier between his friends and family.

Aliyu said: “This is the beginning. So, it is a bumpy ride at the beginning, so they are now going to start to understand each other.

”No matter the time they spend during courtship, they will never know each other until they come together under one roof. Then the real self will start to come out.

“So, the only thing that can keep them together is patience. He has to be patient with his wife and the wife also has to be patient with her husband.

” I want to advise him to realise that she is his wife no one else. She is not his friend’s wife, therefore, there has to be a barrier between his friends and his family. And family is a serious business.

” We will continue to pray for them. May Allah give them a happy home and a blessed family.”

Also speaking, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, the Deputy National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), reiterated that patience and tolerance were the magic wands for a very successful marriage.

Kyari: “Ours is to pray for them to have a very successful marriage and a very bright future.

”As we all know, there are challenging times ahead and we wish them all the best and they should keep all their problems within themselves.

“Let them sort it out themselves without any third party and they will have a successful marriage just like his father and all of us.”

On his part, the groom, expressed gratitude to the Almighty Allah for sparing his life to witness his wedding day in good health.

He added: “I am very happy, I am fulfilled and in sha Allah, everything will go smoothly during this wedding ceremony and with my partner as well.

” I don’t think I will have the time to list all the qualities of my wife, but I will say she is a smart woman, she is very caring, she is loving and very appreciative.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe stood in for the groom.

No fewer than 2,000 Nigerian youths have graduated from the Terra Academy For The Arts (TAFTA), having studied scriptwriting, stage lightening and more.

Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters, founder of Terra Kulture and TAFTA, during TAFTA maiden graduation ceremony in Lagos, emphasised the need to invest in knowledge acquisition for the youth.

She said that the six weeks online training was spurred by her interest in exploring creativity, to create wealth and her belief in potential of younger generation.

Austen-Peters said that the training was done in collaboration with Mastercard Foundation and was entirely free for the beneficiaries.

According to her, the goal of the Accademy is to have 65,000 young people trained in the creative space within five years.

“The dream of TAFTA for me is a journey of possibilities. I started Terra Academy from my living room because I believe in the future of the younger generation.

“I have been privileged to have an excellent team, who I know from nowhere. I appreciate the Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Prof. Duro Oni for their contributions.

“With the help of Prof. Oni and others, we were able to develop the curriculum to teach children on animation.

“I congratulate you all and I recognise that jobs are not available. Open your minds, you can get jobs anywhere in the world with the knowledge you have acquired,” she said

Earlier, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister for Information and Culture, urged TAFTA to work on more collaborations with the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to expand training for the youths.

“On our part as government, I want to describe TAFTA as a partner in progress, as they are complementing the efforts of the government.

“This is not just to create jobs but also to create the enabling environment for the private sector, to provide jobs for the teeming population of our youths.

“I want to suggest that the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture and TAFTA should explore areas of possible collaboration, especially to extend these invaluable training across the length and breath of Nigeria,” he said.

Mohammed commended the efforts of Austen-Peters in putting the nation’s creative industry on the global map with her wealth of experience in the performance arts and in movies where she has also excelled.

An actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekehinde, counseled the beneficiaries, saying, “education is priceless, to go far in life, you have to be meticulous and not be a mediocre.

Also, an actor, Deyemi Okanlawon, who recounted his experience, said he benefited from such free training 10 years ago.

“You all need to understand the business of creativity, set your goals, the impact you wish to make and you will all achieve it,” he said.

Adesokan Yusuf, a fashion designer and one of the beneficiaries who studied stage lightening, said he had always loved the concept of light which could be explored to relay different stories.

Yusuf said that he as a novice before the commencement of the course, could now do a lot in terms of qualitative stage lightening.

“I’m indeed impressed with the knowledge gained on stage lightening. Thanks to Mastercard Foundation and Bolanle Austen-Peters for this great and rare opportunity.

” We had six days practical classes which I initially undermined, but to my amazement, the six days was like 30 days because I was able to gain a lot of knowledge and we were fed all through.

Also, Dorcas Bakare, who studied Scriptwriting, said she had always been passionate about telling stories through written words, but was not converant with the way to go.

Bakare commended the TAFTA and Mastercard Foundation for the opportunity to learn and understand tbe rudiments of scriptwriting.

She said the methodology employed during the training was exceptional, as it was instrumental to ensuring the learning process easy and stick

“Now, I have been endowed with the ability to peach my words in convincing others. So, we are ready to take the industry by storm,” she said. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

By Muhyideen Jimoh

The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has called on political parties to review their manifestos to reflect the critical role of physical planning in their agenda.

Mr Nathaniel Atebije, National President of NTIP made the call on Thursday in Abuja at the 2023 quarterly press conference of the Institute.

He said as the 2023 general elections draws closer, there is need for political parties to put the issue of town planning on the front burner to curtail the rising cases of disasters in the country.

“We recommend to the political parties to review their manifestos to reflect the critical role of physical planning in their agenda.

“There is need to also carry out development in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning, 1992 as amended in 2004,” he said.

Atebije said the Institute was working on an holistic document to be presented to the political parties soon, that will address the issue of urban planning and disasters in the country.

The president also stressed the need for government at all levels to immediately begin sensitisation and installation of measures to minimise flooding this year.

He called for stiff punishment for offenders of building collapse and for more meticulous approval and monitoring of building projects across the country.

“There is need to enforce city management and building control standards stringently to minimize disasters of building collapse.

“Let the authorities for once make offenders and violators to face the wrath of the law with possibilities of capital punishment.

“This will possibly scare people in the production process of buildings and make them to strictly comply with extant regulations,” he said.

The NITP which was established in 1966 has steadily grown to be the leading body in sustainable, integrated and inclusive urban planning in Nigeria and Africa.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The minister reiterated her commitment towards the provision of good quality, high impact Primary Health Care (PHC) services to women and children.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the free integrated medical outreach has been the flagship programme of Nigerians Unite for Tinubu/Shettima Mandate and targeted at the vulnerables in rural communities.

Aliyu noted that the healthcare delivery was one of the key programmes of President Muhammadu Buhari led administration to provide citizens, particularly women and children, high impact Primary Health Care (PHC) services, as a gateway to achieving the Universal Health Coverage.

He said, “The country in general, and Kogi State in particular, has witnessed significant improvements in infrastructural upgrades and healthcare service delivery in this current dispensation.

“I can assure you that a Tinubu led administration will implement, expand and improve upon the structures that have been delivered, in line with the continuity agenda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government.”

The minister explained that the two key strategies in the delivery of Primary Health Care (PHC) scheme were the facility based and the mobile/outreach approaches.

She stressed that overtime, emphasis had been on facility-based services which could give about 40 per cent coverage of those in need, while the remaining 60 per cent could be achieved through focused integrated outreach services.

“Accordingly, the flag off today of this medical outreach programme, which is powered by the support group, Nigerians Unite for Tinubu/Shettima is expected to, among other benefits, strengthen immunisation and PHC service outputs through integration, particularly in the underserved, low performing communities of the State.

“I want to assure all of you that the Tinubu/Shettima’s Renewed Hope 2023 Action Plan for a better Nigeria will deliver on its mandate, based on their promises and commitment to serve Nigeria.

“It is no longer news that they have done it before and we are sure that by the grace of Allah, they can do it again and again,” Aliyu said.

She said that it was a common knowledge that none of the other presidential candidates could move Nigeria forward better than Bola Tinubu when it comes to track records of service delivery.

Aliyu, therefore, appealed to royal fathers, religious and traditional leaders, stakeholders and other well-meaning Nigerians to support and elect Bola Tinubu as the next President come Feb. 25.

Responding, one of the beneficiaries of the free integrated medical outreach, Malam Muhammad Abdullahi, commended the group, Nigerians Unite for Tinubu/Shettima Mandate for the intervention.

“I came here for eye screening, and I am happy with what I saw on ground. Let me commend this initiative of Nigerians Unite for Tinubu/Shettima, gears toward assisting the vulnerable group in the society.

“I say this because there are many people in both rural and urban communities who cannot afford the least healthcare in view of the present economic realities. But, this intervention will go along way to assist,” he said.
