Experts seek policies on climate change impact on livestock production

By Tosin Kolade

The Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP) has called for deliberate measures and policies to address the negative impacts of climate change on livestock production in the country.

NSAP President, Prof. Francis Abeke, made this call on Tuesday at the 12th Joint Annual Meeting of the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN) and the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in Abuja.

He said it was necessary if Nigeria would achieve its vision and mission of providing animal protein food for Nigerians at affordable prices.

Abeke said the negative influence of climate change on animal agriculture could not be over emphasised and called for more science, smart science, and cutting edge technology to reposition the sector.

According to him, the society is committed to meeting the yearning needs and aspirations of Nigerians for adequate animal protein in their diets.

He said collective will and rugged determination was evident among all stakeholders in the livestock industry as it was important to synergise and strategise to achieve a robust livestock industry in Nigeria.

“I want to call on all tiers of government to redouble their efforts in providing suitable production environment through policies, as well as improving the funding of this important sector of the economy.

“The current low scale and almost subsistent production system cannot meet the animal protein need of the vast and growing population of Nigerians and for export.

“I strongly believe that as we put on our thinking caps and brainstorm on the various challenges facing the livestock industry during this conference; we will come out with a workable solution,’’ he said.

On his part, Prof. Baba Yusuf, President, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, said food and nutrition security was very critical and central to the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government.

He said NIAS as a regulatory body in the livestock sub-sector, would continue to strive to be very innovative, strategic and transformational.

Yusuf pledged the Institute’s commitment to work with all stakeholders from Government, Academia and, particularly, the industry, in order to be more impactful.

“As animal scientists, we must make extra efforts towards building bridges of hope, tolerance, cooperation and unity across our profession.

“This is the only way for Animal Agriculture to fully unleash its potential and relevance towards the economic growth of our country,’’ he said.

Dr Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, while commending the associations, said the theme, ‘Pathways to Addressing the Challenges of Climate Change in Animal Agriculture,’ was apt.

He said climate change effects in agriculture had ravaged the world with severe impact on lives and livelihood of crop and livestock farmers.

The minister said all stakeholders must collaborate not only to mitigate the impact, but raise preparedness level by putting in place policies and strategies that support climate-smart agriculture.

“With the huge potentials in livestock resources alongside low intake of animal sourced protein, the present administration has set its focus on ensuring that all Nigerians have access to balanced and wholesome diet.

“This can be realised only by making the livestock sub-sector of the economy viable enough not only to provide affordable source of protein but create employment and earn foreign exchange for Nigeria.

“This is the essence of State of Emergency on Food Security as declared by President Bola Tinubu on July 13,’’ he said.

He said his ministry, in recognition of the significance and strategic importance of the livestock sub-sector in Nigeria’s quest for sustainable economic development, had begun implementing the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP).

The plan, he said was to create a robust, vibrant and competitive livestock sector capable of meeting the national demand for animal protein and place Nigeria among top players in the global livestock economy.

Earlier, former Governor of Kano State, Dr Umar Ganduje, said livestock played major roles in the entire food system; as manure was a critical source of natural fertiliser and also used as draft animals to boost productivity in low mechanisation regions.

According to him, livestock are important assets for vulnerable communities.

He said that globally, no fewer than 500 million pastoralists relied on livestock herding for food, income, and as a store of wealth.

“Locally, livestock production systems have the potential to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and to carbon sequestration in soils and biomass.

“Livestock farming is one of the most profitable businesses in the agricultural industry.

“As long as meat, leather products, milk, etc. are in demand, livestock production will always remain a profitable business,’’ he said.

Ganduje, however, called for more attention and commitment to research and innovation as twin tools for the development of livestock. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

USOSA seeks support for quality education in all unity schools

USOSA seeks support for quality education in all unity schools

By Funmilayo Adeyemi

The Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), has sought stakeholders’ support to reposition all the 110 Federal Government Colleges across the nation.

The President General of USOSA, Michael Magaji, made the call at the 40th Plenary and Annual General Meeting in Abuja which also featured award night of the association.

He said it would be an opportunity for sustainable transformation in the country’s education system, with the theme, “The journey to nationhood-50 years Unity Schools.”

Magaji said that all hands must be on deck to promote qualitative education in the country rather than leaving education for only government to handle.

He also called on President Bola Tinubu to make basic and secondary education funding a priority for national development.

“It is remarkable to note that long before the United Nations started its SDG programmes, the Nigerian Government understood the importance of mainstreaming gender as a key element and tool for public education and national development.

“This is instructive and highly commendable.

“Our country is still a work in progress with challenges in managing and accepting our diversity. USOSANS however remains the true children of Nigeria.

“We stand and believe in one Nigeria for all and with all.

“We call on our governments to embrace and promote this spirit and provide an inclusive playing field where all Nigerians irrespective of background can thrive and feel a true sense of Nigerians.

“We thank the Federal Ministry of Education and its agencies for actively listening and collaborating with us in our march towards improved public education.

“Let me also call on President Bola Tinubu to make basic and secondary education funding a priority for national development,” he said.

In his keynote address, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Landmark Group, Mr Paul Onwuanibe, said that an association like USOSA had a role in building the future of the next generation.

He, therefore, said that the association must stand for what was right to give education a facelift in the country.

Also, the National President, Federal Government Girls College Old Girls’ Association (FGGCOGA), Abuloma,  Rivers State, Itoro Clement-Isong, lamented that the essence of establishing unity schools had been lost due to insecurity challenges across the country.

“ I think, first and foremost, apart from the fact that the unity school standards have dropped from what it used to be, it’s also the present situation of the country’s insecurity that as a parent, you’re less likely to send your child far from home.

“This is because you’re wondering, can I control the things that will happen to the child? Unlike before, your father will drop you at the motor pack, you’re off.

“Today, because of the insecurity in the country, children tend to school closer.

“When we solve insecurity challenges in Nigeria, I think you’ll find students moving across states for studies because it’s actually a very pleasant idea,” she added. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Nigerian wins WAMECA’s journalist of the year award in Ghana

By Usman Aliyu

A Nigerian journalist with the HumAngle, Muhammed Akinyemi, on Saturday emerged the overall winner of the 2023 West Africa Media Excellence Conference Awards in Accra, Ghana.

Akinyemi beat 16 other finalists to win the covetous subregional awards with his story titled “All Die Na Die: At the Heart of Nigeria’s Soot Problem”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the awards were organised by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).

As the overall winner, Akinyemi smiled home with $2000 prize in addition to the $500 he had earlier won for emerging the winner of the Environment category of the awards.

Other categories include Human Rights, Business, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Migration and Investigative reporting.

In his address of welcome, Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director, MFWA, said 825 journalists made entries for the awards from 15 countries.

Braimah explained that the awards, which started seven years ago, were meant to appreciate the role being played by journalists in the subregion.

“We are in a great democratic recession for military has taken over power in about four countries in the region.

“Terrorism, kidnapping and banditry are escalating the level of insecurity in our region. Even where there are democracies in the region, there are weakling institutions.

“In a moment like this, public looks up to the media to play its role. Unfortunately, media is not spared by the challenges in the society such as attacks on journalists and the challenge of the prevailing economic situation.

“In spite of these challenges, we have some journalists who are leaving above board, spotlighting corruption within the system.

“Therefore, this gathering is meant to reward them,” said the executive director.

The annual awards are being supported by United States Embassy in Ghana, MTN Ghana, Stanbic IBTC bank, OXFAM and WADEMOS. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Association seeks Reps’ support to develop telecoms sector

Association seeks Reps’ support to develop telecoms sector

By Ijeoma Olorunfemi

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) on Friday called for House of Representatives’ support and intervention initiatives to develop the sector.

The National Executive Council members of the association made the demand when they paid a courtesy visit to Rep. Peter Akpatason, the Chairman, House Committee on Telecommunications, and his committee members in Abuja.

The visit was to inform the lawmakers of ATCON’s 30th anniversary, present issues confronting the telecoms sector, explore ways of collaborations and familiarise with the committee.

Mr Anthony Emoekpere, ATCON President, said some of the issues bedeviling the sector included the need for an enabling environment that would bring investment to the sector and foster growth.

Emoekpere also said there is the challenge of driving local content, funding deficit, multiple regulations and rising cost of business, among others.

“Telecom is a capital- intensive sector, requiring significant CAPEX investment to facilitate efficient communications service provision.

“We would like this committee to drive strategic engagement with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on behalf of the telecom sector to bridge the infrastructure funding gap.

“This can be done by providing accessible low-cost intervention funds for the rapid deployment of Broadband Infrastructure nationwide, including in rural areas.

“Though telecommunication is a global service, nations promote their local players in different ways, enabling them to compete regionally, globally, thereby raising a multiplier effect in their economy to repatriation of profits.

“There is a need for a concerted effort to shape the future of youths by sponsoring a bill to ensure that a Nigerian content plan exists in the industry,” he said.

He recommended that the committee can adopt the model practiced by the Nigerian Local Content Management Board for the Local Content Fund in the Oil and Gas sector.

Other concerns he raised were issues of rising cost of business, wholesale tariffs for leased lines, Right of Way, need for critical national infrastructure, adding that they are central to the country’s socio-economic progress.

“The Federal and State Governments should be encouraged to activate the use of ICT in governance, health care, education, agriculture, with the well documented attendant benefits to the socio-economic development of Nigeria,” he said.

Responding, Akpatason said the collaboration between the legislature and the private sector is believed to drive growth, innovation and ensure expertise inputs are considered in law making processes.

He assured the association that the committee was ready to assist in providing necessary parliamentary interventions and support when the need arises.

“In line with the committee situation to strengthen and sustain relationship with stakeholders, we will organise a legislative regulators stakeholders forum before the end of the year.

“This is for us to get acquainted and enhance our understanding of our challenges, goals and aspirations, as well as gain valued insight of the telecommunication sector.

“We are going to set up a committee, consisting of members both from the legislature and the association to come up with recommendations on all the identified issues.

“The government is interested in ensuring that businesses grow because the government cannot employ everyone,’’ Akpatason said.

Rep. Midala Balami, the Vice Chairman of the committee, said in developing local content, there is need to dwell on quality to meet global standards.

Balami also said the youthful population and skills of Nigerians needed to be harnessed to ensure that citizens enjoy real-time dividends of democracy.

Other concerns of the telecommunication sector raised by the legislators included vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure, diversification to rural areas, challenge of data theft and drop calls.

ATCON has a vision of facilitating, accelerating the growth and development of the Nigerian Telecommunications and ICT industry through constructive policy advocacies and effective collaboration. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

By Olasunkanmi Onifade

The Managing Director, Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited, Mrs Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, has unveiled a cutting edge Educational Technology (EdTech) solutions equipped with broadband connectivity to transform education in the country.

The announcement came during a stakeholders meeting in Abuja, where Egerton-Idehen addressed the pressing need for accessible internet connectivity hindering the effective integration of technology in education.

Highlighting the challenges faced by schools and the government in advancing technology in education, Egerton-Idehen emphasised the limitations posed by insufficient internet connectivity.

According to her, many ICT laboratories, despite being equipped with computers, remain underutilised due to the lack of affordable internet access.

She said for the past few years there had been an increase in the number of EdTech startups building technology-backed learning solutions in Nigeria, as with the rest of the world.

“While schools and governments are making efforts to advance the integration of technology into education by furnishing some ICT laboratories with computers, a second class problem prevents the use of most of these devices in schools.

“Among other challenges, the lack of access to affordable internet connectivity has proven to be a major hindrance to the effective use of technology for teaching and learning.

“Many laboratories are under lock and key and some others used for basic computer literacy rather than exploring other learning opportunities,” Egerton-Idehen said.

She said the resources can benefit schools by increasing engagement and motivation in the classroom and promoting critical thinking and problem-solving.

The director-general also said it could also be in measuring students’ performance and learning outcomes, as well as facilitate the administration, documentation and delivery of educational content.

She said the product had three main areas of focus of; numeracy and Literacy for Primary Schools, digital libraries for Secondary Schools and content Creation for Teachers, and Learning Management System.

The director-general also unveiled the ‘customer experience and support solution’ for their clients and potential clients, adding that it consists of an Al-powered chatbot and a call centre solution.

“In an era where customer service is paramount, our call centre solution is set to transform the way we connect and support our customers.

“We aim to enhance customer interactions, streamline support services, and ultimately elevate the customer experience,” she said.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Mr Bosun Tijani, who was represented by Communications and Media adviser, Mr Osibo Imohoitsike, said NIGCOMSAT was open for businesses and partnership.

He said the stakeholders meeting was the core part of what the world needs with the focus on knowledge, policies, infrastructure, innovation, entrepreneurship and training.

The Executive Director, Marketing and Business Development of NIGCOMSAT, Mr Najeem Salaam, said the company had a new drive with its upgraded broadband and broadcasting capacity platform for Nigerians to utilise.

“NIGCOMSAT is therefore open for even greater business opportunity for all of you to own.

“The Nigeria of our dream is achievable and we have started doing the work already. NIGGOMSAT is ours together as Nigerians and we must grow our own and make the best out of it,” he said.

On his part, a former Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, called for another satellite to address some security challenges in the country. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Commission partners Women ministry on population, housing census

By Aderogba George

The National Population Commission (NPC) is partnering with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to promote data upgrade for the next population and housing census.

This was the thrust when the NPC Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Kwarra, led the organisation’s management team on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju-Kennedy Ohanenye in Abuja.

Kwarra said the visit was to advance the implementation of its core mandate in data gathering.

According to him, the ministry of women affairs plays a critical role in child welfare, gender related issues, disability and other social related matters.

The chairman explained that population census is fundamental to the mandate of the ministry, as it provides the required demographic data disaggregated by age, sex, educational qualification, disability and others.

“I wish to inform you that the NPC is also preparing for the conduct of the next population and housing census and we would like to highlight some of the preparatory activities and steps that have been undertaken by the commission.

“The commission has demarcated the 774 local government areas across the states of the federation and developed hybrid data collection applications.

“We have conducted the first and second pre-tests of the census to test the enumeration areas and the questionnaire, conducted a trial census, identified and mapped special populations.

“We have done advocacy and publicity/stakeholders engagement, collaborated with other national stakeholders to finalise and commence the presentation of the final list of localities, chiefs and local government chairmen.

“The commission’s geospatial data has mapped out all physical infrastructure in the country, which include all households, formal and informal facilities where children and women reside in Nigeria.”

Kwarra said that NPC would also be partnering with the ministry on the planned situational analysis of vulnerable children in the country, saying the ministry would be the lead implementation agency.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for reappointing some of the commission’s federal commissioners.

In her response, the women affairs minister said the ministry is ready to partner the commission, adding that both organisations would benefit from each other.

Ohanenye said as someone who is closer to the grassroots, noted that she came in with a passion to transform the lives of the people.

“There is a need to come together to fight some critical challenges confronting the grassroots. There is a need for training and empowerment of Nigerians to reduce poverty. I am happy with the mission of the NPC chairman.

“We will tap from NPC’s intelligence to also improve our data, with this you will help us draw a map for our empowerment programme. We are determined to transform the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“I am assuring you that resources to accomplish all the tasks will be judiciously used; this will happen if we organise ourselves.

“There is a need for planning before the resources will come, I promise, we will work together,” Ohanenye said. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

FG donates solar mini grids to Nasarawa households, businesses

FG donates solar mini grids to Nasarawa households, businesses

By Constance Athekame

The Federal Government has donated solar- powered mini grids to 2000 households and businesses in Toto community in Nasarawa state.

The 352-24 Kilowatts Peak (KWP) project, Nigeria’s first Interconnected grid, was executed under the Rural Electrification Agency (REA)-Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) and funded by the World Bank.

It currently provides reliable electricity to more than 2000 Households, 141 Commercial Users, 18 Productive Users and 45 Public Users in the community aimed at improving the socio-economic life.

This project was achieved through the collaboration of REA, PowerGen Nigeria Limited and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

Speaking while inaugurating the project in Toto on Thursday, the Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, said that the event marked a transformative step in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said that the agenda focused on revamping Nigeria’s power infrastructure to provide equitable access to electricity across the nation.

The minister said that the partnership between REA, AEDC and PowerGen represented the synergy government was trying to achieve across the power sector.

This, he said was an avenue where all players in the various segments can collaborate to deliver power to the end consumers.

He said the mini-grid inaugurated was a beacon of hope and government’s commitment to re-invigorate the power sector, as it symbolised its pledge to provide affordable energy to  the country’s rural communities.

According to Adelabu, the project will also empower the citizens, regardless of their economic statuses, adding that everybody deserves electricity.

“We need to reduce the trend of  rural-urban migration, the end result is not desirable, it is a threat to our food security, when everybody leaves the village and want to enjoy power in the city.

“Governments must bring light to the people in the village and this is what we are doing today.

“As today’s milestone propels us forward, we cannot fail to identify the numerous potentials ahead of this community and ahead of us as a nation.”

Also speaking, Gov. Abdulahi Sule commended the Federal Government for bringing the project to the community.

Represented by Mr Abdulahi Tasha, Chairman, Toto Local Government Area, he pledged the people’s commitment to cooperate with PowerGen to sustain the project.

On his part, the REA Managing Director, Mr Ahmad Saihijo, said the successful completion of the project was a testament to the power of partnership and innovation in driving rural electrification in the country.

Salihijo said that the REA remained committed to fostering an environment which encourages similar sustainable and impactful projects nationwide.

He said, “Over the years, we have optimised the NEP to strengthen the off-grid space while deploying over 100 mini-grids and powering over five million Nigerians.

“With the seamless implementation of this programme, we are confident in the model and positioned for an even wider impact across the nation.”

AEDC Managing Director, Mr Christopher Ezeafulukwe, said the company’s collaboration with PowerGen to achieve the project, underscored the significant role  DisCos played in supporting renewable energy initiatives.

Ezeafulukwe, represented by Jumoke Daleno, Head, Regulatory and Government Relations, said the DisCos were also enhancing the grid with sustainable energy solutions for underserved communities.

”It is a proof of what can be achieved when we work together, and we are immensely proud of this achievement, ‘’he said.

Ezeafulukwe said the choice of Toto for the pilot project was not difficult for AEDC and its partners to make, given the economic potentials of the community which had been underserved.

”Even at the conception stage, we could envision the massive transformative impact a successful interconnected mini grid project would have on Toto.

”We are indeed very glad that our vision at AEDC has come to fruition and the journey we embarked upon with our worthy partners, has been successfully completed, ”he said.

Powergen Country Director, Mr Seun Edun, said that the firm and AEDC teamed up to pioneer a groundbreaking approach to improving energy access in the country.

”The mini-grid model is designed to cater to the energy needs of underserved areas at affordable tariffs below the associated costs of using petrol or diesel generators, ‘’ he said. (NAN)

NESG moves to strengthen food safety

NESG moves to strengthen food safety

By Bukola Adewumi

The Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) has announced its partnership with some stakeholders to strengthen interventions to promote food safety in the country.

Dr Tayo Aduloju, NESG Chief Executive Officer-designate, in a statement on Thursday, said the partnership would be between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

According to him, the just concluded workshop on “Food and Feed Expertise Coordination” targets high-level officials and technical experts from the Nigerian food industry and regulatory bodies.

Aduloju said Nigeria’s commitment to uphold the highest food safety standards was paramount to its wellbeing and progress.

He said the country had over 70 million hectares of agricultural land-a massive potential for economic growth and development.

Aduloju said that effective regulatory, institutional and policy framework was needed for agriculture to thrive.

According to him, the private sector plays a crucial role in the agricultural value chain, enhancing productivity, opening markets, and attracting investment.

“Frameworks that address the gaps in food and feed safety systems will not only improve the well-being of citizens, but also impact Nigeria’s position in international trade.

“To benefit effectively from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCTA), reforming food and feed safety systems in Nigeria is inevitable,’’ he said.

The statement quotes the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, as saying that deliberate efforts were being made to ensure that the country attains the required National Health Security status.

Pate noted that the ministry would validate the revised National Policy on Food Safety and Quality and its Implementation Plan 2023 and also launch the first National Integrated Guidelines for Foodborne Disease Surveillance and Response.

“The revised policy will look at new and emerging areas that will improve the regulatory, enforcement and data-gathering system to ensure it is more effective, efficient, and robust,’’ Pate said.

He, however, said his ministry prioritised food safety as a serious element of public health that required concerted efforts.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the three-day food safety expertise workshop builds on 2022 Food and Feed Safety Transformation Dialogue – where stakeholders tasked the government to pass the National Food Safety and Quality Bill into law.

This, they say is important to the health and wellbeing of Nigerians.(NAN)
