NGO advances business opportunities for women in Abuja IDP camp

NGO advances business opportunities for women in Abuja IDP camp

By Aderogba George

An interest group, Hope Raisers Global Foundation (HRGF), on Sunday, commenced a move to advance the growth of women-led businesses in underserved communities.

The group, in partnership with Tech Herfrica and Onome Food Market, also an NGO, began the training at Durumi, Abuja camp of internally-displaced persons (IDPs).

Founder of HRGF, Mrs Angonimi David-Imeh, said that the move was aimed at giving the marginalised women in-depth financial management training as well as empowering and equipping them with essential skills.

David-Imeh said that the training was all about transforming women who were in the trade and agricultural sectors.

According to her, the initiative represents a crucial step, following a previous project that laid the foundation for digital empowerment among women in underserved communities.

She said that digital literacy training had earlier been provided to 50 women, adding that 26 of them were equipped with mobile devices to enhance their engagement in agriculture and trade.

David-Imeh stated that the initial training uncovered a stark reality, stressing that none of the women possessed the skills required to calculate their business sales, profits and losses.

“This knowledge gap perpetuated a cycle of poverty and hindered business growth.

“The initial training included comprehensive digital literacy and fundamental financial management concepts,” she said.

David-Imeh further stated that in previous trainings, participants were taught how to calculate business capital inputs, determine sales profits and losses and keep accurate financial records.

She said that the training was conducted in Hausa language to ensure accessibility, while each participant received a notebook to facilitate book keeping and reinforce their new knowledge.

“The impact of this training was nothing short of remarkable 100 per cent of the women now possess the ability to calculate their income and expenses accurately.

“All participants can effectively determine profit and loss. A unanimous eagerness among the women to initiate book keeping for their businesses has been expressed.

“Confidence has surged among participants in maintaining proper financial records,” she added.

According to David-Imeh, the group’s concern regarding writing in English has also been addressed, with women affirming their abilities to write in their local languages.

She said that in order to foster sustainability, local clusters and champions had been established to facilitate the training and guidance of other women in the community.

The HRGF founder stated that the approach would promote knowledge sharing and continuous learning within the IDP community.

She said that one of the women who exhibited significant potential for business growth received financial support to scale her business.

David-Imeh said that the support was expected to increase her income by at least 50 per cent and further validate the effectiveness of the approach and training given to the women.

According to her, the initiative underscores the importance of digital and financial literacy to the empowerment of low-income women.

She maintained that this kind of systematic approach was what the country needed to bring more women out of poverty. (NAN)

Traders association begins construction of milk production factory in Abuja

Traders association begins construction of milk production factory in Abuja

By Ikenna Uwadileke

The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), on Friday performed the ground breaking of its milk production factory in Giri, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

Performing the ceremony, Dr Alan Sy-Traore, Director of Agriculture in ECOWAS Commission, commended NANTS for living up to expectations in the partnership projects with the commission.

Traore said that the factory was in line with ECOWAS agricultural policy on livestock value chain.

He restated the commission’s commitment to continue to partner NANTS on trade and economic projects, that would enhance economic development in Nigeria and the ECOWAS region.

Earlier, the Deputy Director, Commercial Ruminant and Dairy Production, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Ibilade Akeem expressed the ministry’s readiness to strengthen partnership with NANTS on meat and milk production.

According to him, the milk production factory is in line with the food security programme of the Federal Government.

The National President of NANTS, Dr Ken Ukaoha said the factory would be completed within 14 months.

He said that this would ensure the production of hygienic milk toward enhancing food security and national economic development.

Ukaoha said the need to address the challenges facing the dairy sector necessitated NANTS to construct the milk factory.

“West African region has been plagued with numerous challenges ranging from inefficiency and lack of technical expertise, deployment of obsolete practices, lack of feed, water among others.

“This includes desertification in the North as a result of climate change which has led to cattle and herders travelling far south for grazing and giving rise to conflict with farmers among others,” he said.

Ukaoha said that the situation had further devalued the capacity of the livestock and milk sector, to become attractive as a vocation for the teeming unemployed youths in the region.

“NANTS with support from ECOWAS and Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation has planned a pilot project to modernise and calibrate the milk sector and its practices.

“This is by showcasing the value chains as veritable opportunities for job creation and sustainable means of livelihoods attractive enough for youths,’’ Ukaoha said.

He said that the project would be achieved by improving the production, processing, handling, aggregation, transportation and marketing of milk in compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations.

Ukaoha said the project when completed would serve as a training ground for students of Faculty of Agriculture, University of Abuja.

He said that other relevant institutions within and around the FCT would also benefit from the project also to ensure job creation and youth empowerment.

“The ceremony of this small scale milk production and processing factory is going to serve as a model for milk sector productivity in Nigeria.

“Moreover we have extended this concept towards food production so that animal feeds can also be produced here.

“What this means is that here is going to have a facility where we will also be training young people particularly on food production processes and this is going to be on field.

“This is going to be a kind of practical demonstration,’’ Ukaoha said.

In a goodwill message, the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Abu Giri represented by Mr Yohanna Ishaya of Agric Department, described the project as a welcomed development in the area.

On his part, the Aguma of Giri, Alhaji Musa Wakili commended NANTS for siting the factory in his community, adding that it would provide job opportunities for the people. (NAN)

The officers who participated in the training are from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Police and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was aimed at strengthening the investigative and prosecutorial capabilities of the officers.

The training was facilitated by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), a Spanish public institution.

NAN reports that FIIAPP is the promoter of Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) in Nigeria, a project being sponsored by the European Union (EU).

The participants will in turn train others at their various stations and spread the knowledge to other officers.

The ATIPSOM team leader, Mr Federico-Millan Marcicalva, congratulated all the participants for the first international police training course 2023.

He said they all demonstrated ability to respond to academic challenge, adding that the training had culminated in effort to work together with the sole aim of not losing the benchmark and constantly updating themselves.

Marcicalva said that participants learnt new methods of investigation, as well as broadened their knowledge on the do’s and don’t of TIP/SOM crime, while charging them to be committed to fight the crime.

According to him, the university of knowledge is the basis of any project and that is why they must all continue to invest in the journey that gives the tools to be able to face any phenomenon.

The participants learnt how to make the world more difficult for perpetrators of human trafficking and smuggling of migrants.

The ATIPSOM team leader also urged the participants to continue to strive to protect victims of TIP/SOM.

The Director-General of NAPTIP, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, appreciated FIIAPP for organising the training, stressing that it was a very good one for law enforcement officers in Nigeria.

Waziri-Azi, who was represented at the event by Mr Hassan Tahir, NAPTIP Director of Legal and Prosecution, expressed optimism that the participants would make use of knowledge gained from the training.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, who was represented by Mrs Tabitha Bako, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), also thanked FIIAPP for facilitating the training.
