The Ministry of Youth Development and Heifer International, an NGO, has urged youths to leverage innovative agricultural technology to drive sustainable transformation in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

They made the call at the inauguration of the 2025 AYuTE Africa Challenge Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme, now in its fourth season, is an initiative of Heifer International.

NAN reports that the initiative aims to empower agri-tech innovators to transform Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

Mr Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Youth Development, noted that the initiative would empower youths to drive sustainable development, particularly within Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Olawande, represented by Ms Kehinde Awujoola, Special Assistant on Gender Affairs, said the initiative was a project aimed at unlocking the potential of Nigerian youths in agriculture.

“It is also fostering innovation and addressing the critical challenges facing our agricultural landscape in Nigeria, where agriculture plays a vital role in the economy and livelihoods.

“Initiatives like these are crucial, and the focus on agri-tech solutions is particularly timely.

“We need to leverage technology to enhance productivity, improve efficiency, and create a more resilient, sustainable agricultural sector.

“This challenge provides a platform for our young entrepreneurs to showcase their ingenuity and contribute to the transformation of our dear country,” he said.

Olawande therefore reiterated the government’s commitment to investing in Nigeria’s youths and tech innovators to achieve sustainable growth and development.

Dr Lekan Tobe, Country Director of Heifer International, said a $40,000 grant would be awarded to the top three finalists of the challenge to provide them with the necessary support to scale their agri-tech innovations.

He said this would help transform Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

Describing the challenge as an enterprise development programme, he stated that it aims to identify, nurture, and support innovative, technology-driven agri-centric enterprises to grow, scale, and thrive.

“It is to ensure that the youth of today take hold of the agriculture they want tomorrow, and it also provides them with the opportunity to become entrepreneurs and generate employment for others,” he said.

He added that the organisation also provides participants with technical assistance, business development support, and introductions to potential investors.

He said this support would continue until participants successfully commercialise their technologies.

“Some of them become our programme partners and implement initiatives that offer solutions to farmers’ challenges.

“By virtue of their participation, others have found them interesting and invested in them, enabling them to continue growing,” he said.

According to him, the organisation has impacted over 46 million smallholder farmers across America, Asia, and Africa since its inception 80 years ago.

Also, Abdulmutalib Mohammed, representing the Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU), said: “Technology is a very important catalyst in achieving food security.

“If it’s not anchored by the youth and tech-savvy individuals, we don’t see how we can catch up”.

Some past beneficiaries of the grant testified to its impact in equipping them with technology-driven solutions to address challenges in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

They said it has contributed to food security, economic growth, and youth empowerment. (NAN)

TAF Africa CEO Jake Epelle testifies against Emirates over rights breach

TAF Africa CEO Jake Epelle testifies against Emirates over rights breach

By Taiye Agbaje

Mr Jake Epelle, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Albino Foundation (TAF) Africa on Thursday, testified in his N150 million suit filed against Emirates Airline.

Epelle gave his evidence as sole witness before Justice Musa Liman of a Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations bordering on the breach of his fundamental human rights by the airline.

Led in evidence by his lawyer, Regina Okotie-Eboh, Epelle identified his witness statement on oath dated March 18, 2024, and adopted it as his evidence-in-chief.

Okotie-Eboh also tendered Epelle’s international passport, the boarding pass, the flight ticket, the letters from Stanford Medicine, also known as Stanford Healthcare; the email message and the ticket purchases from Emirates Airline as evidence in the case.

The lawyer equally tendered the flight ticket from Delta Airline, another letter from Stanford University School of Medicine, a letter from the plaintiff’s counsel demanding N150 million damages from Emirates Airline, and another letter from plaintiff’s counsel to Epelle in respect of fees for filing the suit, among others, as evidence.

The lawyer to the Emirates Airline, Michael Dedon, did not object to tendering all the documents and Justice Liman admitted them in evidence and marked them as exhibits in the suit.

When Okotie-Eboh asked Epelle what he wanted from the court, the TAF CEO said: “I want this honourable court to grant my reliefs.”

Dedon, while cross examining the witness, said Epelle should know as a regular traveller that holding a visa of a country, does not guarantee anyone an entry into the destination country.

Responding, Epelle, though admitted Dedon’s statement, he however clarified that the process of stopping an individual from entering a country should be the responsibility of the embassy staff and not the airline.

“It is the embassy staff that will come there and cancel my visa and tell me not to go. But this did not happen,” he said.

The witness said the Emirate Airline did not show him any tangible evidence why he was denied access into the U.S.

According to him, it was just a mere information.

When the lawyer told him if he agreed with him that admission into a foreign country is at the discretion of immigration officers attending to the immigrant, Epelle insisted that it was not the US immigration officers that denied him access into the country.

“Just from your words, it is the immigration officers, by themselves at the point of entry that will turn you back. But this was not the case.”

He said it was the Emirates airline that stopped him from proceeding on his journey.

He said even when he came back to the US Embassy in Nigeria for clarification, the officer who attended to him confirmed that his name was not on the restriction list.

“I turned down the US green card because of the people I represent in the country.

“I hold a UN status; I am the UN Ambassador for Albinism. I am a human rights defender and I won the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law,” he said.

Epelle, who broke down in tears in the witness box, said there was no reason the US would have denied him access into the country.

“My lord, it is so traumatic because any time this case comes up, it takes my memory back to what Emirates Airline did to me,” he said.

When Dedon asked Epelle if he was given any document from the US Embassy to show to the court that his name was not on the restriction list, he said diplomatically, the embassy would not have given him any documents.

He, however, said that the embassy worker showed him from their system to confirm that there was no email from the US Immigration and Border Control stopping him from entering the country.

He said it was the embassy worker who advised him to board Delta Airline back to the US.

“Look, I am a skin cancer patient. Emirates Airline would have just killed me for nothing,” he said, weeping.

Justuce Liman adjourned the matter until March 27 for defence to open their case.

Earlier before the case proceed, Okotie-Eboh informed the court that Epelle was indisposed.

The lawyer, who said Epelle came from the hospital bed to give evidence, prayed the court to allow the hearing proceed because the matter had been dragging since 2021 when it was filed.

“The matter was adjourned for hearing and our sole witness is around. He has been on admission but he is ready to give evidence,” she had said.

The judge, however, asked Epelle if the matter could be adjourned to allow him attend to his health but he agreed to go on with the matter.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Epelle, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1285/2021, sued Emirates Airline as the sole defendant.

In his statement of claim, the TAF Africa CEO alleged that on Dec. 20, 2020, he was billed to travel on a medical trip to San Francisco, U.S.

He averred that upon being issued with the boarding passes to San Francisco. he alongside his colleague, Mrs Green Mary Ibitoru, boarded flight No EK 785 from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (U.A.E).

He alleged that upon arrival at the Dubai International Airport, on Dec. 20, 2020, he sought to board the next flight to Boston as already scheduled but was denied access to board the Emirate Airline.

Ekpelle said he was informed by the airline staff at their connecting desk in Dubai International Airport, Dubai that the United States of America (USA) Border Control sent a mail to them via electronic mail (email) requesting that he should be denied access to board their flight to Boston.

He said he kept demanding for the reason for being denied access to board the flight to Boston but was not given any except the one reason which was that the U.S. Border Control sent a mail to the defendant stating that the plaintiff be denied access to board the defendant’s flight to Boston.

He, however, said that he was never shown any mail from the US Boarder Control denying him access to board the defendant’s flight to Boston.

He said regardless of his insistence of not having any travel restriction, no criminal records and not been politically exposed, Emirate Airline did nothing to confirm his position.

He said some friends and persons who recognised him at the Dubai International Airport were embarrassed and thought he had been denied boarding for something related to crime, while others joined in confronting and pleading with the defendant to allow him board the flight to Boston but all to no avail.

Ekpelle said the airline’s refusal to allow him to board the flight to Boston caused him to miss the appointment with the dermatologists for his surgery.

The plaintiff averred that due to the missed surgery, he suffered untold hardships and pain that would not have been if the trip had not been aborted and the surgery had been carried out as initially scheduled.

According to him, the defendant’s act of refusing me access to board, caused me added inconvenience as I returned to Nigeria without my luggage as the luggage had been tagged with the luggage of the said colleague.

He said his ticket to Boston and San-Francisco was seized and one of the tickets was used to escort him on board Emirates Airline which brought him back to Abuja on December 20, 2020.

Ekpelle said he paid N886,751.00 to the airline as the air fare for a return trip from Abuja, Nigeria to San-Francisco en-route Dubai and Boston and from San Francisco (USA) to Abuja, Nigeria en-route New York and Dubai after which he was issued a flight ticket.

He said on his return to Abuja, he immediately visited the American Embassy where he met the Head of Mission and informed her about his ordeal at the hands of the defendant’s airlines in Dubai.

He said he was told that no restriction was placed on him as at Dec. 20, 2020 and that no instruction was given by the USA Boarder Control or any of the USA Consulate preventing him from entering USA.

He averred that after he was graciously booked for another surgical appointment by his dermatologist, he travelled back to Stanford Health Care in San Francisco through Delta Airline for the medical treatment.

He, therefore, sought a declaration that the failure of the Emirate Airline to allow him board the flight to Boston from Dubai was a breach of the contract of carriage between the duo.

He sought a declaration that in all circumstances of the case, the acts of the defendant in refusing the plaintiff access to board the defendant’s flight to Boston from Dubai is unjust and an infringement of the plaintiff’s right.

Ekpelle, therefore, sought an order, directing the airline to pay N150 million as general damages for the hardship, suffering, trauma, humiliation and embarrassment he suffered.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tax Reform Bills: Customs duties beyond revenue collection– expert

Tax Reform Bills: Customs duties beyond revenue collection– expert

By Martha Agas

A customs and tax expert, Mr Okey Ibeke, says the duties of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is not only limited to revenue collection but involves highly technical operations.

Ibeke stated this on Thursday in Abuja, following a public hearing on tax reform bills organised by the Special Committee on Tax Reform Bills on Wednesday.

He described the NCS as a specialised agency requiring advanced skills to effectively carry out its functions, adding that the proposed tax reforms could undermine its other specialised and critical operations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the proposed reform bills include the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

The Comptroller-General (C-G) of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, had stated that the proposed tax reforms aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to an efficient tax system for the country.

Ibeke, however, said that the reform if passed in situ could jeopardise the customs service’s ability to perform its core functions.

He expressed concern that designated revenue agencies may lack the technical expertise, specialised workforce and training to handle the assigned operation of the NCS.

According to him, these agencies might struggle to detect undervalued or misclassified goods, potentially leading to the acceptance of inaccurate importer declarations.

“Customs involves classifying cargo, understanding tariff classifications, and conducting customs valuations.

“Without the expertise to classify cargo and determine the applicable duty rates, there will be significant challenges. Only well-trained customs personnel can effectively perform these functions,” he explained.

He added that NCS operations require applying Rules of Origin (RoO), which is essential for determining a product’s original source.

RoO, he said, is critical for assessing the value of imports, calculating appropriate revenue, and identifying fraudulent practices.

He said that these are tasks that general tax administration systems could be ill-equipped to handle.

Ibeke warned that passing the bills without necessary adjustments could render the NCS redundant and negatively impact revenue generation.

“Is the Federal Government planning to dismantle the customs service? Will they employ customs officers to work in the new agency? Will they create offices for them within the agency?

“ This could lead to confusion. Ultimately, the government, which aims to maximise revenue, stands to lose the most,” he said.

Ibeke pointed out that the NCS has already made significant strides in modernising its operations through its Trade Modernisation Project.

“The deployment of the ‘B Odogwu’ software, for instance, has contributed to increased revenue collection and positioned the service to surpass its 2025 revenue target,“ he said.

He urged the Federal Government to increase funding for the NCS to address revenue collection challenges rather than repealing the 2023 NCS Act, which took over eight years to pass into law.

“The NCS has established infrastructure and is leveraging technology to facilitate trade. Repealing the Act now will undermine these efforts and hinder progress,” he said.

NAN reports that during the public hearing, the C-G emphasised the importance of ensuring that the final bills do not contradict the Act, thereby preserving the agency’s core functions and operational efficiency.

Ibeke called for a balanced approach that would strengthen Nigeria’s tax system without compromising the critical functions of the existing critical revenue agencies. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), says the Nigeria Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP) has the potential to unlock 2.5 billion dollars investment in oil and gas sector.

The commission is also set to hold its first Nigeria Upstream Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Forum in March, to align its upstream operations with global decarbonisation goals and carbon monetisation.

Gbenga Komolafe, the Chief Executive, NUPRC, stated this during the African Upstream Forum at the ongoing 2025 Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES), on Wednesday in Abuja.

Komolafe, who spoke in a session entitled: “Imperative of Regulatory Efficacy in Optimisation of Upstream Activities,’’ said the NUPRC stood as a powerful catalyst for the growth, sustainability, and global competitiveness of the sector.

He said the gas flare commercialisation programme would also generate huge revenue and create significant number of jobs.

“As the global focus shifts toward a low- carbon future, NUPRC is embedding sustainability into seven upstream operations, mitigating environmental risks and protecting communities.

“Key actions include: Managing methane and GHG emissions; fostering energy efficiency and carbon credits, promoting investments in Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and Enforcing Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) goals,’’ he said.

He said the industry was contributing 95 per cent of foreign exchange earnings and 70 per cent to government revenue, unlocking employment opportunities, and positioning Nigeria as a formidable leader in the global energy arena.

“At the heart of NUPRC’s efforts is the growth of Nigeria’s hydrocarbon reserves and production in a cleaner manner for enhanced revenue generation.

“In the short-term, we have set new benchmarks for oil and gas production and significantly strengthening the nation’s energy security,’’ he said.

Komolafe said the commission was also committed to enriching domestic gas utilisation and expanding gas infrastructure to meet Nigeria’s growing energy demands.

The commission, he said would ensure that every Field Development Plan (FDP) included a firm commitment to fulfilling gas delivery obligations and increasing gas supply to the domestic market to meet rising local demand.

“As part of our plan to advance deep-water development, we will promote the creation of deep-water clusters, fostering synergies in facility use to unlock the vast potential of Nigeria’s deep-water resources, while reducing costs and leveraging economies of scale,’’ he said.

He said the commission was set to hold the maiden Nigeria Upstream Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Forum in March, 2025, adding that it would present its governance and regulatory framework for decarbonisation in the Nigerian upstream sector at the forum.

“This forum will provide a platform for key stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on decarbonisation and carbon monetisation, while allowing regulators, agencies, and companies across the globe to share their valuable insights and experiences.

“Nigeria’s success in the upstream oil and gas sector is anchored on a predictable and enabling regulatory environment.

“Through regulatory excellence, collaboration, and visionary planning, NUPRC is poised to guide Nigeria toward a future defined by energy security, economic growth, and environmental responsibility,’’ he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria to justify its proposed subscription price increase, set to take effect on March 1.

The summon was contained in a statement issued by FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Ondaje Ijagwu, in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Ijagwu, the commission has directed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MultiChoice Nigeria to attend an investigative hearing at its headquarters on Thursday.

He stated that the action followed MultiChoice’s formal notification of the price adjustment, which raised concerns about recurrent unilateral price hikes.

Other issues highlighted include potential market dominance abuse and perceived anti-competitive practices in the pay-television industry.

“The FCCPC is deeply concerned that Nigerian consumers continue to face frequent price increases, amid accusations that MultiChoice applies different pricing strategies in other markets, heightening questions about fairness and market abuse.

“Should MultiChoice fail to provide satisfactory explanations or be found in violation of fair market principles, the FCCPC will be left with no other option than to impose regulatory penalties, sanctions, or other corrective measures to protect Nigerian consumers.

“The FCCPC is engaging the sector regulator and other relevant agencies to ensure fair competition and consumer protection within Nigeria’s broadcasting and digital subscription landscape,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Feb. 24, MultiChoice announced a proposed price increase for its services, set to take effect from March 1.

In a statement titled “Price Adjustments for DStv and GOtv Packages,”MultiChoice informed its customers:

By Tosin Kolade

The Federal Government has established 12 water quality reference laboratories across Nigeria as part of efforts to improve water quality monitoring and surveillance.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, announced this at the opening ceremony of the inaugural Annual Water Quality Conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

Utsev, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, said the laboratories were established under the National Water Quality Reference Laboratories and Monitoring Network Programme.

He also noted the introduction of the Freshwater Restoration and Source Water Protection Programme, aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s water sources, including rivers, lakes and artificial reservoirs.

Utsev said access to safe water is a priority under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with the government committed to tackling sector challenges through partnerships and innovation.

He added that quality plays a vital role in public health, socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.

He recalled that “according to the 2021 Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene National Outcomes Routine Monitoring (WASHNORM) Report, 67 per cent of Nigeria’s population has access to basic water supply services.

“However, a significant proportion still lacks access to safely managed drinking water, with 25 per cent of the population relying on unimproved or surface water sources, which pose a high risk of waterborne diseases.”

He acknowledged that poor sanitation remains a major concern, as open defecation and indiscriminate waste disposal continue to contaminate water sources.

The minister stated that the ministry is leveraging modern technologies and collaborating with both local and international partners to enhance water quality management.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to eradicating open defecation and ensuring improved water and sanitation standards across the country.

“To further enhance water quality assurance, the Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality, the Nigerian Standards for Ambient Water Quality, and the soon-to-be-finalised Nigerian Standard for Irrigation Water Quality have been established.

“Additionally, the Community Water Safety Plan has been introduced to empower rural communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent water contamination.

“The ministry has also commenced the production of hydrogen sulphide vials for microbial water quality assessment, which is currently being tested in UNICEF-supported states”, he said.

Mrs Elizabeth Ugoh, the Director of Water Quality Control and Sanitation, reaffirmed government’s commitment to providing safe drinking water for all Nigerians, promoting public health and economic productivity.

She emphasised that ensuring water safety is a public health, economic and environmental priority.

“We all know that contaminated water is a major cause of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea, which hinders socio-economic development.

“It is our collective responsibility to develop and implement robust policies, institutional frameworks and innovative solutions to improve water safety nationwide,” she said.

UNICEF WASH Manager, Mr Chiranjibi Tiwari, warned that two-thirds of Nigeria’s water sourcesare contaminated with E. coli and Salmonella, causing severe waterborne diseases like cholera.

He cited a 2021 WASHNORM data, reporting 111,000 cholera cases and 3,600 deaths, with outbreaks persisting, including in Lagos, a traditionally low-risk area.

He warned that contaminated water threatens public health, education and productivity, stressing the need for urgent, coordinated action to achieve SDG 6 on Universal Clean Water Access.

He also linked safe water access to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, warning that failure to act would hinder national progress.

Tiwari called for stronger collaboration among development partners, NGOs, civil society, academia, media and the private sector.

He urged stakeholders to form structured partnerships, particularly with the private sector, to develop household water treatment technologies and public awareness campaigns to promote safer water practices.

The UNESCO representative, Dr Enang Moma, warned that water pollution could pose serious risks to health, food production, ecosystems and economic growth.

She highlighted the impact of untreated wastewater, industrial chemicals and emerging pollutants, exacerbated by climate change.

Without improved water monitoring, she cautioned, 4.8 billion people could face health risks by 2030, stressing the urgency of pollution control and better wastewater treatment to prevent diseases like cholera and schistosomiasis.

She reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to supporting Nigeria through its Intergovernmental Hydrology Programme (IHP) and technical expertise.

Representatives of WaterAid, Water Correspondents Association of Nigeria, ministries of health and environment, and other partners delivered goodwill messages. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Funmilayo Adeyemi

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will not extend registration for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after March 8.

This is contained in statement to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday by the Boards Spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

Benjamin said the registration period which began on Feb. 3, would end on March 8, 2025.

According to him, this deadline has been clearly communicated in all advertisements and the official calendar for the 2025 UTME exercise.

“We wish to inform all prospective candidates that there will be no extension of the registration period.

“This notice is particularly important given the recent decline in the number of candidates registering for the examination.

” We urge all individuals who wish to participate to register promptly and avoid waiting until the last minute,” he said.

He added that currently, over 1.5 million candidates had successfully registered, which aligned closely with the Board’s projections for the 2025 examination cycle.

“It is essential to note that the Board’s calendar is fixed, with numerous subsequent programmes scheduled after registration, including examinations, results management, and admissions exercise.

“These timelines are coordinated with other agencies whose operations rely on the completion of our processes. Therefore, extending the registration period would disrupt not only the Board’s plans but also those of our partners,” he explained.

Benjamin encouraged candidates to complete their registration as soon as possible, while also adhering to the established timeline for the 2025 UTME. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja has pledged the Church’s support for the Federal Government’s Clean Nigeria, ‘Use the Toilet’campaign to end open defecation.

He made the commitment when he received the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, and senior ministry officials in Abuja on Tuesday.

Kaigama commended the government’s engagement with religious leaders, stressing that governance should involve direct interaction with the people.

He noted the church’s role in raising awareness and educating communities, particularly in rural areas, about the dangers of open defecation and the need for improved sanitation.

He emphasised that open defecation contributes to waterborne diseases, environmental degradation, and public health risks.

Citing Pope Francis’ Laudato Si on environmental care, he noted that the church is committed to promoting hygiene and sanitation.

Kaigama assured that he would personally advocate for the campaign and encourage priests to incorporate sanitation messages in their teachings.

He recalled the church’s role in promoting health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed readiness to collaborate with the government in ensuring clean and safe environments.

Earlier, Utsev explained that the Clean Nigeria campaign, launched in 2019, aims to eliminate open defecation by 2030.

He noted progress, with 142 local governments now declared open defecation-free, up from 102 before the current administration.

He urged the church to reinforce the message in its teachings and provide sanitation facilities as models for communities.

According to him, the Federal Government is willing to provide technical assistance to support the initiative.

“Our appeal is that we cannot achieve this without the support and collaboration of the Church. That is why we are calling on the Church to support us in this effort, as it will benefit all Nigerians.

“We recognise the power of the Church’s message and its wide-reaching influence. This is why we have chosen the Church as a key partner in promoting Nigeria’s goal of becoming an open defecation-free nation.

“Through Church conferences, this message can be shared, and priests attending these gatherings can help spread awareness in both urban and rural communities.

“Additionally, we would appreciate the opportunity to participate in these conferences, where our personnel can address bishops, priests, and seminarians to further promote this campaign.

“We sincerely thank you and pray that, through this collaboration, our people will enjoy better living conditions. Improved sanitation will also boost our nation’s economy, as public health is closely linked to economic development.

“We, therefore, urge the church to assist and partner with us in driving this campaign forward”.

The minister joined Catholics in praying for Pope Francis’ recovery and expressed hope for stronger church-government collaboration on public health and development. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

ECOWAS calls for logistics support for standby force

ECOWAS calls for logistics support for standby force

By Mark Longyen

ECOWAS has urged experts from member states to develop a comprehensive logistics concept and depot policies for operation of the bloc’s standby force (ESF).

Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, gave the charge at a validation meeting on the ESF logistics concept and depot policies, on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ESF is ECOWAS’ proposed 5,000-strong counter-terrorism force established to tackle the surge of violent extremism in West Africa, and unconstitutional changes of government.

The five-day meeting drew experts within the government of the member states to comprehensively review the ESF logistics documents to ensure compliance with global best practices.

Musah, represented by Dr Sani Adamu, Head of ECOWAS Peace Support Mission, noted that having effective logistics to support the takeoff and deployment of ESF is critical to tackling terrorism and violent extremism, thereby promoting peace, stability, and security in the subregion.

According to him, the gathering is a clear demonstration of the significant progress made by the bloc towards strengthening the ESF’s regional logistics capabilities.

“Indeed, there is no gain saying that, the development of a comprehensive logistics concept and depot policies are significant steps forward in enhancing ECOWAS capacity to respond to emerging security challenges.

“Governmental Experts, with exceptionally well-experienced logistics experts from our member states are all gathered here.

“I urge you all to bring to bear, your wealth of experiences to comprehensively review these documents and make them in tandem with continental and global best practice,” he said.

The commissioner said the increased acts of terror, violent extremism, and political instability being experienced in some member states, necessitated a well-resourced logistics strategy with fully functional and operational static depot.

He disclosed that with the completion of the ECOWAS Logistics Depot, which has its headquarters in Lungi, Sierra Leone, it was imperative to develop relevant documents to guide its daily operations.

“Thus, the ESF logistics concept and other relevant documents were developed as tool kits for the management, coordination, and utilisation of the depot’s resources and services, accordingly.

“Your collective inputs will be invaluable in ensuring that these documents are robust, relevant, and effective in our peace support operations objectives.

“Over the next five days, I expect you to engage in constructive discussions, share expertise, and validate these policy documents, toward ensuring that these documents are robust, effective in our peace support operations objectives,” Musah said.

Also speaking, Air Cdre Sampson Eyekosi, the Chairman of the ESF logistics concept and depot policies, assured that the participants would bring collective value to finetune its current drafts.

According to him, this is in order to develop the best and most suitable operating procedures for the discharge of logistics during Peace Support Operations (PSOs), and other emergencies in the subregion.

“Likewise, the need to look closely at the nitty-gritty of all essential that is required to be in place to ensure that the ECOWAS Logistic Depot (ELD) at Lungi, Sierra Leone becomes functional and attains full operational capability in the shortest possible time.

“This is especially as the ELD is now at the verge of being commissioned this year, with over ninety percent of expected infrastructural work already completed on the facility,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
