Use statistics to tell Africa’s story- Bagudu

Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, has urged the African statistical systems to use statistics to tell the African story.

Bagudu said this at the 2024 African Statistics Day  Celebration, organised by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in Abuja on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the Day is ‘Supporting Education by Modernising the Production of Fit-For-Purpose Statistics’.

He said there were calls for Africa to create its own credit rating agency which would adequately capture the realities of the continent.

The minister said this had become necessary because the methodologies used by some of the rating agencies were not known.

According to him, the African statistical system must help us tell the African story, and the African story is that of hard-working men and women.

“We are not going to wait for someone to develop a methodology for us to say it. That is as fit- for purpose as it could be.

“That at 4 am, a woman is carrying a child on her back, going to the farm or fishing ground, or moving around with livestock or by the roadside roasting corn or plantain, and this is as hardworking as it can be.

“But yet the global credit system has excluded these hard-working women.

“Yet maybe somewhere a woman who wakes up at 11 am and works for five hours a day some statistical system is likely to accord her more avenues for inclusion.

“Who should say this, who should tell the world this? Not only is she hardworking, she is honorable and this is the picture across our continent.

Bagudu said there was a need to reverse these statistics that put the continent  in a bad light or “show us as otherwise”.

He said this was important so the world capital market could appreciate that Africa is a continent of hardworking men and women.

“Also, that we have governmental systems in Africa  that ensure statistical systems are independent”.

The minister said the “sanctity of data” is the watchword of  President Tinubu-led administration.

“We have recognised and given independence to NBS; we have never sought to interfere with the formation, timing and release of data.

“We are not where we want to be but let us confront our reality and make choices pleasant and unpleasant.

“This will help us reach where we want to, and data systems can help us, and this is the African story,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

YouthWASH Initiative Africa has urged all tiers of government to prioritise improving sanitation and eliminating open defecation in Nigeria.

The appeal comes as the organisation, in partnership with NYSC and the Clean Nigeria Campaign, prepares to mark the 5th anniversary of the Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign.

YouthWASH Coordinator, Mr Nature Obiakor told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the role of young persons in promoting sustainable sanitation efforts cannot be overemphasised.

“As Nigeria battles the public health and environmental challenges posed by open defecation, YouthWASH and its partners are committed to empowering the next generation of sanitation leaders.

“The fight against open defecation requires a united effort, by equipping young people with the tools and platforms to lead, we can create a cleaner and healthier Nigeria”.

He hinted that the National YouthWASH Digital Media Hangout, organised to celebrate the campaign’s achievements, is scheduled to run from November 19 to December 19, 2024.

The theme is “Youth-Led Digital Action for Sustainable Sanitation”.

Obiakor explained that the campaign would feature a 10-day digital media countdown, with daily themes such as ‘The Journey So Far’ and ‘Sanitation and Climate Change’.

“Influencers, youth advocates, and workshops on digital advocacy will drive awareness on social media platforms.

“The main event will include discussions on key sanitation issues and the official launch of YouthWASH Clubs across NYSC camps and schools.

“These clubs aim to sustain sanitation advocacy through grassroots engagement and youth leadership.

“After the event, the campaign will focus on sustaining momentum by sharing digital content, monitoring the impact of YouthWASH Clubs, and organising mentorship sessions for young sanitation advocates”.

According to Obiakor, the initiative’s goals include highlighting the achievements of the Clean Nigeria Campaign in reducing open defecation.

He said leveraging digital platforms to educate and mobilise young people on sanitation and hygiene was important.

Obiakor emphasised the importance of youth involvement, stating that institutionalising sanitation awareness and ongoing training would ensure young leaders drive lasting change in Nigeria. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Sonaiya, while speaking, said the programme was aimed at unlocking the future of radio broadcasting as the experts explore how AI could enhance audience engagement, streamline audio content production and boost operational efficiency through smart editing and data analysis.

“For me, as I reflect on the remarkable progress of Women Radio 91.7FM, I am reminded of my own journey growing up without mobile phones and the internet.

“And I am trilled by the possibilities AI brings. At Women Radio 91.7FM, we have intentionally embraced this new era with our team, not only welcoming new innovation but leading it.

“We are leveraging AI in presentation, voice overs, news editing, content creation and automation.

“We are re-emerging radio to connect with our audience.

“As a pioneer in AI Radio broadcast, our mission is to inspire others into AI skills.

“AI Radio is the future and the future today is now,” she said.

Sonaiya urged media practitioners to embrace AI for sustainable innovation and growth, and to unlock the future of radio broadcasting.

“If you are a radio or broadcast professionals here or a business owner, you have to consider what AI can do for you,” he said.

Adekunle urged media practitioners to explore various uses of AI and how they affect the experience of their audience.

He, however, called for an internal, organisational AI policy to guide how the practitioners work due to privacy concerns.

“Let’s put together policy that enhances our work and protects the integrity of what we do,” he added.

Stellamaris Okebu, the Business Programme Manager, Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana, enumerated the benefits of AI.

She said AI would help to analyse one’s data and to know who the listeners are, their age group and how to serve them best.

“It can also help you to analyse trending topics on radio

“Generally from a technology perspective, AI basically helps us to enhance our jobs.

“It will help us significantly for the next generation to get job done quickly, easier and to be more efficient,” she said.

Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Media and Publicity, said AI radio summit represented a significant milestone in the industry.

“It brings together passionate individuals and organisations dedicated to pioneering advancements in the world of broadcasting

“Women Radio 91.7FM has demonstrated remarkable commitment to harnessing the power of the artificial intelligence for social impact .

“The introduction of ‘NIMI’ AI, Nigeria’s first AI radio host and interactive virtual assistant, is a clear testament to the limitless potential of AI in enhancing how we engage with our audiences and deliver compelling content.

“‘NIMI’ AI not only represents technological innovation but also serves as role model for what can be achieved when creativity meets technology,” he said.

Akosile said he believed that the summit would delve into important discussion surrounding AI ethics and the opportunities that it presents toward ensuring a more inclusive and more innovative radio industry that prioritises the needs and voices of all community members.

He said Lagos State had invested heavily in a smart city project which is aimed at transforming the entire technology ecosystem from what it is today to what everyone desires.

The governor’s side, who commended Women Radio, said the state was ready to partner with the radio station for a better future and development of the ecosystem.

Waka community urges advocacy on men’s health

Waka community urges advocacy on men’s health

Waka Community International Foundation and Novo Health Africa on Saturday emphasised the importance of improving awareness and building better consciousness on male reproductive health concerns.

These concerns, according to Mr Lorenz Mba, Founder, Waka Community International Foundation, include breast, prostrate and testicular cancers and erectile dysfunction.

Mba made the call at the foundation’s event with theme:” Waka for Men’s Health- Breast, Prostrate and Testicular Cancer,” in Lagos.

He noted that many men died from these diseases because of their inability to speak up or lack of understanding of early detection.

This, he said, necessitated the walk event.

He noted that prostate cancer; a genetic disease, common to men from 40 years, was the second leading cause of cancer death among men of colour.

He said testicular cancer and prostate cancer were both types of cancer that affect the male reproductive system.

Mba, however, said that they differ in some ways with testicular cancer easier to identify via self-examination.

He stated that men’s health was often not talked about due to cultural issues and more, meanwhile fathers, brothers, sons, friends and associates were dying in silence and from preventable causes.

“It is the need to change this narrative that these complications are both physical and mental.

“As part of bringing the issue of men’s health to the front burner, we are organising two talks by medical experts and two Wakathons in Lagos and in Jos respectively on Nov. 16 and 23.

“Research has shown that keeping fit, staying healthy and exercising helps even when patients are fighting some cancers such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer.

“Let us stop being silent when people are dying from preventable causes such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

“Do not stay silent; do it for yourself and for those you care about and remember, it’s OK not to be OK,” he said.

Dr Dorothy Jeff-Nnamani, the Managing Director, Novo Health Africa, stated the importance of creating awareness on preventive healthcare for men.

Jeff-Nnamani stressed that men from their 40’s must get annual medical checks for testicular, breast and prostrate cancers and engage in walks for life, fitness, emotional and mental well-being.

“You know, when we are younger, we are almost like invincible and at that young age, people feel they cannot get sick but the older you become, the more you have body, physiological and hormonal changes.

“So, it is important that men from 30 years should inculcate the habit of an annual medical check because these days we are seeing very young people have testicular cancer and testicular tumours.

“Things like Prostrate Specific Antigen (PSA) which helps to check whether that your prostrate is enlarge as a man is very important,” she said.

She also urged government to support the fitness drive of its citizens by providing better infrastructure and environment like security, sanitation and proper lightening of the road for people walking.

Also, retired Rear Admiral Chris Ezekobe, said while prostate cancer was a silent killer, its early detection was very key to saving lives and encouraged every man to go for the PSA tests annually.

Ezekobe noted the linkages between good health and exercise, saying it has been scientifically proven that the more you exercise, the less the likelihood of prostate cancer.

He urged the youthful population to engage in one form of sport or the other, depending on age and capacity to reduce susceptibility to many kinds of diseases.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Waka Community International Foundation is a not-for-profit wellness and health foundation that started three years ago in Nigeria.

The foundation with a primary objective to build a global community of leaner, fitter, healthier and ultimately happier people through walking, currently has over 55,000 members worldwide across 47 countries.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Rukayat Moisemhe

Glovo, a pioneering multi-category app, has unveiled its Women in Tech Bootcamp with the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and investment and She Code Africa to promote technology infusion for women.

Mrs Lamide Akinola, the General Manager, Glovo Nigeria, at the launch on Friday in Lagos, said the bootcamp was to empower the next generation of female leaders in technology.

Akinola said the initiative not only aimed to foster technology inclusion but to also provide skills training, and empower women to build successful careers in technology.

Akinola said the event which brought together industry leaders, government officials, European diplomatic community reinforced Glovo’s commitment to bridging the gender gap in the tech industry.

She added that it would advance gender diversity, create pathways for women to thrive in tech-driven roles and make a lasting impact in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

“At Glovo, we believe in a future where women are integral drivers of innovation, especially in technology.

“We recognise that the challenges women face in technology go beyond technical skills; they include barriers rooted in access, opportunity, and sometimes, the confidence to take bold steps.

“Today’s event is our way of saying we see those barriers, and we are here to help break them down with you.

“At Glovo, we believe that empowering women with digital skills is essential, not only for driving innovation and growth but for building communities where everyone can thrive,” she said.

Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Commissioner, Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Lagos State, underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in unlocking opportunities for women.

Ambrose-Medebem quoted that studies showed that bridging the gender gap in technology could add up to $12 trillion to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2025.

She said the figure showed that empowering women in technology was not just a moral imperative but an economic necessity.

She said Lagos State, a hub of innovation and economic activity, understood that inclusion was a catalyst for sustainable growth.

“However, achieving this requires intentional strategies and robust partnerships.

“Today’s gathering signifies more than just advocacy; it is a rallying cry to reimagine the future of innovation by ensuring no one is left behind, particularly women, who represent half of our population.

“We are excited to work with Glovo and She Code Africa to deliver a program that opens doors for women to excel, innovate, and lead.

“This initiative also aligns with the mandate of the ministry to foster innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and support the development of skilled talent across industries,” she said.

Ada Oyom, Founder, She Code Africa, said her organisation as the technical partners of the Women in Tech Bootcamp Programme, was very enthusiasm about the outcome of the partnership.

Oyom said the collaboration with Glovo and the Lagos State Government to run the 12-week intensive programme would create impactful pathways for women in tech.

She noted that Glovo’s commitment to gender diversity was commendable, and urged like-minded companies to invest in initiatives that empower the future of women in technology.

“Together, we can build a more inclusive and innovative tech ecosystem,” she said.

Also, Shiro Theuri, Glovo’s Chief Technology Officer, restated the brand’s steadfast commitment to diversity in technology, saying its possibilities and impact of fostering inclusive environments was enormous.

She said the company’s dedication to “walking the talk” was evident in its strategic efforts to create opportunities for women across its operations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

She said the initiative aimed to ignite interest in technology careers by highlighting the flexibility, creativity, and impact of a modern technology environment.

“To achieve this, Glovo focuses on three pillars: facilitating bootcamps for women without technical backgrounds to prepare them for junior tech roles.

“The second pillar is breaking gender stereotypes through community engagement, such as office visits that inspire young girls with female role models; and acting as a career catalyst by offering internships to top bootcamp participants.

“This initiative also ensures that, even after completing the bootcamp, participants will have ongoing access to mentorship, supporting their journey toward careers in technology.

“This mentorship aligns closely with the broader goals of Glovo’s Women in Tech initiative across the globe, which aims to make an impact by empowering the next generation of women in technology,” she said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Promises, expectations as Ondo elects new governor

Promises, expectations as Ondo elects new governor

A News Analysis by Emmanuel Oloniruha, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

As Ondo State prepares for the governorship election on Saturday, November 16, the atmosphere is charged with both anticipation and concern.

With 18 political parties competing for the coveted position, the stakes are high, and expectations from citizens, political parties, and the electoral body are palpable.

There are 2,053,061 registered voters in Ondo, but only 1,757,205 (85.6 per cent) who have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be eligible to participate.

The election will take place across 3,933 polling units in the state’s 18 local government areas.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), 111 domestic and international organisations will deploy 3,554 observers to monitor the election.

Additionally, over 100 media organisations, deploying about 700 personnel, including 129 female journalists, will cover the election, marking the largest media presence for any off-cycle governorship election in Nigeria.

As Ondo voters eagerly prepare to cast their ballots, democracy advocates hope that the election will set a new precedent for future Nigerian elections, one rooted in integrity and respect for democratic principles.

Key players such as INEC, security agencies, and political parties have expressed their readiness and commitment to ensuring a successful and credible election.

To enhance transparency, INEC has announced the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for voter verification and real-time result uploads to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo, stated that “a total of 4,002 BVAS devices will be used for the election, with 812 devices held in reserve.

“These devices are fully charged, configured, and ready for deployment, and all non-sensitive materials have been sorted and dispatched for distribution to polling units.

Babalola further revealed that “the Registration Area Centers (RACs) are prepared to accommodate INEC’s ad-hoc staff, with provisions made for their comfort during pre-election preparations”.

Training has been completed for Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs), Presiding Officers (POs), and Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs).

In addition, several meetings have been held with transport unions to ensure the smooth movement of personnel and election materials.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, speaking at a stakeholders meeting on November 7 in Akure, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a credible and transparent election.

Yakubu noted that “a successful mock accreditation had been carried out across 12 polling units in six LGAs, demonstrating the system’s reliability”.

He also emphasised that accreditation tags with QR codes would be provided to all accredited journalists, observer groups, and party agents to ensure only authorised representatives are allowed at polling units and collation centres.

Yakubu assured stakeholders that logistics and result management would see significant improvement, particularly with the deployment of election materials and personnel.

“Voters in Ondo should expect a marked improvement in election-day logistics,” he said.

Regarding security, over 36,000 police officers, along with personnel from other security agencies, will be deployed across the state on election day, totaling approximately 43,157 officers.

The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, at a recent election security meeting stated that the government is committed to ensuring peaceful elections.

He also warned that “any attempt to disrupt the election would be met with the full force of the law”.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, also reaffirmed the neutrality and professionalism of security agencies.

“Security will be watertight around polling stations and public areas,” he said, urging all stakeholders to avoid violence and refrain from using thugs.

Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), Chairman of the National Peace Accord Committee, appealed to all political stakeholders to refrain from violent acts and to accept the election results if deemed free, fair, and credible.

He also urged party leaders and candidates to accept the outcome of the elections, provided it is deemed free, fair, and credible, and to seek legitimate, peaceful means to address any concerns that may arise afterward.

“While I commend INEC for the work done so far, I call on them to continue living up to their responsibilities by ensuring that eligible voters exercise their franchise peacefully and that the remaining electoral processes remain credible, free, and fair,” he said.

Abubakar also urged the police to remain vigilant in preventing any threats of violence and maintaining peace in the state.

He advised voters to turn out in large numbers to vote for their preferred candidates and to refrain from selling their votes, saying that political actors must put an end to the practice of vote trading.

“As citizens, you must also respect that only INEC has the constitutional authority to announce the results,” Abubakar said.

Similarly, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) warned against vote-buying and urged political parties and candidates to prioritise the interests of Ondo citizens.

IPAC Chairman Yusuf Dantalle emphasised that “leadership should be selfless service to the people, and if that is the case, no responsible leader will want to force himself or herself on the people”.

The Centre for Democracy and Development’s briefing paper, ‘A Tale of Two Deputies – Reviewing the Political Terrain of the 2024 Ondo Governorship Election’, reveals key factors that could influence the election.

They include; the candidates, evaluations of the incumbent governments, party structures, voter apathy, insecurity, and information disorder.

The report notes that while many of these factors are common in recent Nigerian elections, they take on a new significance in this context, potentially swaying the outcome.

It emphasises that the election’s credibility depends on the capacity of the election management body to ensure a free and fair process.

The report says to maintain legitimacy, concerns about the election must be addressed by the authorities, ensuring the next administration starts with the trust needed to fulfill its mandate.

All in all, many believe that by fostering mutual respect among political actors and encouraging active civic participation, Ondo state has the opportunity to set the stage for a more robust democratic process in Nigeria. (NAN)

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev has pledged commitment to ending open defecation across Nigeria, calling for intensified efforts from all stakeholders to achieve this goal.

Utsev, speaking with newsmen on Friday in Abuja, noted that achieving an open defecation-free status involved more than building toilets.

He said that while huge progress had been made, ensuring access to and proper use of these facilities remained a crucial challenge.

“The challenge is not only the number of toilets available but also raising awareness and encouraging their consistent use.

“This is why we are elevating the campaign to a higher level. The Vice President will lead the relaunch of our strategy in a more impactful way,” he said.

He stated that development partners like UNICEF had made significant contributions by providing toilet facilities, training, and awareness campaigns.

“Our partners do not provide funds directly but support through the supply of toilets and training programmes, their efforts have been invaluable in driving this campaign forward,” he said.

The minister also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to achieving ODF status in Nigeria.

He said since the launch of the campaign in 2019, 135 local government areas and over 30,000 communities had achieved ODF status, with more areas undergoing verification.

According to him, despite these achievements, the road to universal sanitation remains long, especially in underserved and vulnerable communities.

“Ending open defecation is about more than toilets, it’s about improving health, boosting productivity, and enhancing the dignity and safety of our citizens,” the minister emphasised.

Utsev called on the media, private sector, and local communities to join the effort to raise awareness and ensure behavioural change at all levels.

He, however, urged renewed and collective action to achieve a cleaner and healthier Nigeria.

“The campaign remains a critical component of Nigeria’s efforts to improve sanitation and public health, with the 2025 ODF target in sight but requiring sustained momentum to achieve,” he said.

On strategic advocacy efforts, the minister said the ‘Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign’ strategy will be relaunched on Nov. 19, coinciding with the World Toilet Day.

“Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead the event, which aims to strengthen collaboration among state governors, community leaders, civil society organisations, and development partners.

“We are calling on governors, community leaders, and partners to actively participate in this campaign,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event is part of activities marking the 2024 World Toilet Day with the theme: ‘Sanitation for Peace,’ which underscores the significance of toilets as symbols of safety, dignity, and development. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has increased the number of train services on its Abuja-Kaduna route from four to six per day, Monday through Friday.

The acting Managing Director of the Corporation, Mr Ben Iloanusi, confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

The statement was signed by Mr Yakub Mohmood, the Deputy Director, Public Relations of the NRC.

Iloanusi noted that this was in reaffirming of NRC’s commitment to responding to customer demands, improving customer satisfaction and tackling complaints of ticket racketeering.

“A trend analysis over a five-month period revealed a significant increase of 22 per cent in the number of new passengers registering on the ticket platform to use the Abuja-Kaduna service.

“This signifies a surge in the number of Nigerians turning to the use of train services as a comfortable, reliable and safe option of commuting.

“NRC has observed similar trends on the Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe and Port Harcourt-Aba routes and efforts are already ongoing to beef-up services along these routes as well,” he said.

He assured Nigerians of the increased presence of senior management of NRC across all the train service routes to drive continuous efficiency and tackle the issue of ticket racketeering head-on.

“Our valued customers are encouraged to use NRC ticket platforms online to take advantage of the increased services and shun patronage of ticket racketeers,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
