NAFDAC sensitises Ibadan stakeholders on online products registration

NAFDAC sensitises Ibadan stakeholders on online products registration

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Tuesday sensitised producers and marketers of its new online products and company registrations.

The Oyo State Coordinator, NAFDAC, Matthew Adeoye, said during a stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan that NAFDAC Automated Products Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) offered significant reduction on the timeline for registration.

Adeoye said that the online registration was part of the Agency’s efforts to facilitate faster processes and remove bottlenecks associated with traveling for follow-ups.

“NAPAMS provides a medium for the application for products registration with NAFDAC and data capture of all existing and current products it has approved.

“It also offers stage-by-stage status feedback to applicants regarding update on the application.

“The process is seamless that an applicant can monitor (online) all the processes from registration, payment, status/stages of registered product at the applicant’s zone due to decentralisation ,” he said.

Also, Mrs Roseline Ajayi, Director, NAFDAC South West Zonal Office, Ibadan, said the meeting sought to interact and update the stakeholders on the direction of the agency and to clarify issues with navigating the portal.

Ajayi said that product quality, safety and wholesomeness must not be neglected due to the country’s current economic crises.

“We are all witnesses to the current economic crises and the consequential threats to business stability.

“While this experience has become a serious concern, the quality, safety and wholesomeness of regulated products cannot be negotiated,” she said.

Ajayi said that the agency would ensure continuous engagement with stakeholders, as it recognised the need for interaction with the different stakeholders at all the levels either at national, state and grassroot.

“Today, our focus is on the water and bakery sectors. These sectors constitute the highest number of the agency’s stakeholders and their members are engaged in the provision of the basic needs of life.

“Water and bread are two household commodities that are essential for life hence, they are not sectors to ignore.

“The agency’s mandate as detailed in the enabling law is to regulate and control all activities, importation, production, advertisement, distribution, sales and use of regulated products.

“This is why we all have a common interest of ensuring that both the regulator and the regulated have understanding of the dynamics of the regulatory environment,” she said.

Responding, Mr Oladejo Adegboyega, the Chairman, Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP),Oyo State Chapter, expressed the stakeholders’ readiness to support the agency in its quest to ensure production, supply and distribution of quality products in Nigeria. (NAN)

NALPGAM urges FG to ensure gas price stability

NALPGAM urges FG to ensure gas price stability

By Olatunde Ajayi

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has appealed to the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the rising price of cooking gas in the country.

Mr Abideen Olatunbosun, National President, NALPGAM, made the appeal during the 36th Annual General Meeting of the association held in Ibadan on Tuesday.

Olatunbosun expressed the concern that if the rising gas prices are not addressed, gas might become a commodity only affordable to the affluent.

“It is very vital for me to state that continuous increase in the price of gas in recent time stands as a big challenge to LPG marketers.

“The government needs to find ways to ensure stability of gas price as well as make gas available to common Nigerians.

“As a country, we need to improve on our gas utilisation level and if we all adopt gas, it will save our forest and improve quality of our lifestyle and the economy will grow.’’

According to him, the hike in price of gas is a concern to all.

Olatunbosun called for collaborative effort between the government and the private sector to establish critical gas infrastructure.

The guest speaker, Prof. Sunday Isehunwa, Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan, said that LPG offered a huge promise for increased domestic gas utilisation in Nigeria.

He said that cooking gas also served as the country’s energy transition to net-zero carbon emission by 2060.

According to Isehunwa, there is need for increased LPG supply to meet rising demand and curtail sharp practices by some operators.

“The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has been the major supplier of LPG, however, additional supplies are essential through functional refineries, and adequate natural gas processing facilities.

“Removal of difficulties in importation when necessary is also essential for additional supplies.

“Adequate infrastructure development is highly necessary to enhance access to LPG by rural communities.

“Accessibility will increase through increased economic empowerment of consumers and relatively low costs of products,’’ the don said.

Also, Mr Ogbugo Ukoha of the Nigerian Midstream And Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), said that the recent deregulation policy would result to a reflective petroleum products pricing.

Ukoha, who is the Executive Director, Distribution Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure, NMDPRA, noted that current data had shown that the domestic gas supply had overtaken the import supply.

He said that necessary infrastructure investment must be put in place to address challenges of gas reserve so as to achieve smooth distribution of the product.

“Our focus is to make necessary investment in gas infrastructure to increase LPG supply so as to force its price down for Nigerians,” Ukoha said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the conference also featured dissolution of the current governing council of NALPGAM, election of new national executives and presentation of plaques. (NAN)

NGO awards scholarships to 100 indigent youths in Ibadan

By Olatunde Ajayi

An NGO, Human of Substance Empowerment Initiative (HOSEI), has awarded scholarships to no fewer than 100 indigent youths and victims of domestic violence in Ibadan.

The organisation, through its support mentorship unit, announced the names of the beneficiaries during its 10th anniversary in Ibadan on Sunday.

The HOSEI President, Ms Abiade Abiola, while presenting the scholarships, said that the current set of youths would be 10th to benefit from the initiative.

According to her, the new beneficiaries will be trained on photography, graphics designs, tailoring, baking, hair dressing and other skills of their choices free of charge.

“We have partnerships with standard organisations that teach our beneficiaries these skills.

“We also follow up the skill acquisition scheme with different mentorship and mentoring programmes.

“During the six months scholarship, they will be exposed to leadership skills through regular lectures, workshops, conferences and seminars,” she said.

Abiola said that the NGO had supported the first nine sets of beneficiaries with start-up kits and financial assistance after their graduation.

“We always watch their level of continuous seriousness and commitment and support as many as those who wish to further their education to tertiary institutions.

“We don’t want these youths, who are the future leaders of our nation, to succumb to the allure of prostitution and crime due to the economic situation of the country,” she said.

Earlier in his opening remarks, a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Akinlolu Olujinmi, reiterated that a lot still needed to be done on youths’ mentorship in Nigeria.

Olujinmi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), noted that many youths, who were called leaders of tomorrow, had today dipped their hands in vices, such as cultism, drug abuse, inordinate ambition for wealth and all manners of evils.

He urged the parents and guardians to rise up to the challenges of nurturing worthy future leaders for the country.

“We must let them realise that there is dignity in labour and while we want to make them comfortable, we should do it in moderation.

“It is important for us to change our tactics of caring; we must be close to them, engage them always and let them know that money it is not everything that money does,” Olujinmi said.

One of the second set of beneficiaries, Mr Courage Afemije, said that his foundation and success in marketing industry began at HOSEI while he was given a scholarship to learn graphic design.

Another beneficiary, Esther Olaleye, said being a beneficiary of HOSEI to learn beads and jewelry making started a great journey in her life.

She stated that HOSEI also opened the door of scholarship for him to obtain tertiary education.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the occasion also featured presentation of awards to the beneficiaries’ trainers and mentors.(NAN)

The diplomat said collaborations with Taiwan could contribute positively to the economies of African nations.

“Our embassy in the Kingdom of Eswatini has been there for over 55 years. We have built a huge mission outside of the embassy.

“We have built a Technical Assistance Mission, medical mission, agriculture mission, vocational training and others.

“So, the Kingdom of Eswatini benefited from Taiwan’s assistance for almost 30 to 40 years. So, that kingdom is a good window of Taiwan; how Taiwan can help by providing our development model.” he said.(NAN)

Presidential Tribunal Verdict: Victory for Nigeria’s future – Diaspora

Presidential Tribunal Verdict: Victory for Nigeria’s future – Diaspora

By Adekunle Williams

Some Nigerians based in the United Kingdom (UK) have described the Wednesday verdict by the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC) as a landmark in the history of Nigeria.

Speaking on Thursday with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and under the aegis of Bola Tinubu Support organisation (BTSO-UK), they described the verdict as a victory for Nigeria’s democracy, rule of law, stability and development.

BTSO is a political group established in support Tinubu when he was presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group consists of some Nigerians in the diaspora, cutting across the UK, the United States of America, Canada, South Africa, amongst others.

On Wednesday, the five-man panel of the PEPC, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the Feb. 25 presidential election.

This followed petitions filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; and the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Peter Obi.

The Director-General (D-G) of BTSO-UK, Mr Ade Adeshina, said Nigeria’s democracy had become beacon of hope for the continent.

“While the distraction of challenging the people’s will at the tribunal is understandable, we must not lose sight of what the verdict represents.

“Nigerians can resolve their matters in a civilized manner, building a firm and enduring foundation for progress, unity and justice.

“This verdict is exciting. It is a victory for Nigerians,” Adeshina said.

He said that for President Bola Tinubu and his dedicated executive team, led by his visionary leadership, the victory marked only the beginning.

“The road ahead demands steadfast dedication to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“To us, in the diaspora, the time has come to rally together and provide unwavering support to turn Renewed Hope into a tangible reality for Nigeria. Let’s build the Nigeria of our dreams.

“To our political rivals, let it be known that we share this nation, and together, we must build the Nigeria we all dream of,” Adeshina said.

Similarly, Mr Adewale Soyinka, a cleric and Dep. D-G of BSTO-UK, said the tribunal verdict represented the voice of majority of Nigerians, a landmark in the nation’s democratic process and a lifetime victory for Nigerians.

Soyinka said the verdict demonstrated that there was hope for the future by ensuring that all points raised by the petitioners were judiciously attended to and technically knocked out based on sound reasoning and well-articulated legal premises.

“To this end, I say congratulations to our judiciary,” he said.

Soyinka called on the losers to accept the will of Nigerians in good faith.

“All those who tasted electoral defeat must now, without reservation, heed the people’s electoral judgment — vox populi, vox dei.

“It is a moment for introspection, a time to gracefully retreat to their respective camps, and allow the contemporary leaders to take charge of guiding Nigerians toward the Promised Land,” Soyinka said.(NAN)

Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023

By Oladele Eniola

Nigeria’s exports into the UK from June 2022 to June 2023 were worth 3.3 billion pounds, according to the British Deputy High Commissioner, Jonny Baxter.

Baxter gave the figure while speaking on the level of trade between both countries, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that the figure was 1.4 billion pounds higher than what was achieved in the corresponding year before.

“The overall trade figures, that include imports and exports is 7.6 billion pounds and of that, 4.3 billion are made up of UK products that are imported into Nigeria. That figure has gone up a one billion pounds, if you compare with the figure of the year before.

“The rest of the 3.3 billion are Nigeria’s exports into the UK, and this has gone up by 1.4 billion.  So, the increase in Nigeria export into the UK has been much more fast and this is great news.

“It shows that Nigeria is producing goods and services that people in the UK want to buy and they are being bought and purchased from Nigeria,” he said.

He noted that introduction of Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) has further strengthened trade relations between both countries

“The UK is committed to creating the best conditions possible for trade to continue to strengthen and in June this year, we started a new programme called DCTS.

“It is a global scheme covering all developing countries in the region of 65 countries and Nigeria, in particular, benefits from that.

“What it does is that it allows more and more goods into the UK by reduced tariffs or no tariffs at all and for Nigeria, 99 per cent of what Nigeria’s export to the UK in goods and service is tariffs-free.

“This means that it is cheaper for people in the UK to buy those Nigerian goods and therefore are going to be more popular and it is a great thing for Nigeria to benefit from,” he said.

Baxter revealed that both countries were exploiting ways to address some barriers and hinderances of trading between both countries.

He said that in April 2024, UK would host an African Investment Summit which would serve as a platform for Nigerian Companies to meet British investors.

“In April next year, the UK is hosting an African investment summit and Nigeria would be a big player as it is an opportunity for Nigerian companies to pitch to British companies for investments, contracts, imports and exports

“As part of that, there would be a special side event on Nigeria creatives as I think in the past, maybe people haven’t focused so much on the creative industry as part of the economy.

“Nigeria is such a classic place where the creatives are so important and they have produced a lot of money and wealth. Indeed, I think it is an increasing area for Nigeria’s economy and it is brilliant that the African Investment Summit would have this side event,” he said. (NAN)
