At the Sinoscience Fullcryo (Zhongshan) Equipment Manufacturing Co. Ltd., delegation members learned about a large hydrogen liquefier capable of producing five tons of liquefied hydrogen per day. This facility was jointly developed, designed, and manufactured by the company and the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, achieving the domestic production of large hydrogen liquefiers, with overall performance reaching international advanced levels. Zhongshan has prioritized the hydrogen energy industry and has nurtured several leading enterprises and research institutes in low-temperature technology, thus forming a relatively complete hydrogen energy industrial chain.
At the Zhongshan Institute for Drug Discovery, the delegation received insights into several groundbreaking drugs developed by the institute that are pioneering in both China and globally. The institute is currently working on more than 60 new drugs, with seven of them undergoing clinical trials. This initiative reflects Zhongshan’s commitment to creating a national-level comprehensive platform that integrates biopharmaceutical research and development, technological breakthroughs, platform services, and industrial incubation, all aimed at promoting high-quality development in the biopharmaceutical and health industries within the Greater Bay Area.
During last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games, tens of thousands of spectators benefited from seamless video streaming and video calls through a robust 5G network, supported by Tongyu Communication Co. Ltd., based in Zhongshan. The delegation learned that as China’s pioneering manufacturer of base station antennas, the company has established two overseas production bases in India and Thailand, along with six international branches. Its base station antennas are extensively utilized in over 60 countries and regions and have earned certification as a global supplier from leading telecom equipment manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE, and Ericsson.
At FCourier, a company specializing in the research, development, operation, and management of high-performance Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), flight control systems, and artificial intelligence products, the delegation observed the test flights of two types of UAVs up close. Known for their exceptional performance, the company’s electric vertical take-off and landing fixed-wing UAVs with retractable rotors are sold in multiple Middle Eastern countries. They are effectively applied in various fields, including emergency firefighting, public safety, and energy inspection, and serve as an example of China’s high-end manufacturing going global. Zhongshan aims to gather over 300 relevant enterprises in the industrial chain, achieving an industrial scale exceeding 10 billion yuan, and is committed to establishing a distinctive low-altitude manufacturing industry, which is poised to be a key growth driver for the city’s economy.

On October 8, marking the 100-day anniversary of the opening of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, a delegation of international communication experts and foreign media outlets, themed “The World Comes to Zhongshan,” organized by the CICG Academy of Translation and Interpretation, began their tour in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province.
“This is a critically important bridge, and its uniqueness and significance are evident. It connects multiple regions, including Zhongshan, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai, greatly enhancing Zhongshan’s economic development. In my opinion, this bridge has opened a window to the world for Zhongshan,” said Asghar Muhammad, a reporter from the Associated Press of Pakistan, after visiting the link.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, which took 14 years of preparation and construction, reduces travel time between Zhongshan and Shenzhen from two hours to just 30 minutes. The 24-kilometer corridor is a composite project featuring artificial islands, tunnels, and various other structures. It integrates bridges, islands, tunnels, and underwater connections, making it one of the most challenging cross-sea cluster projects in the world. The link boasts multiple world records; the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge has the largest span of any fully offshore steel box girder suspension bridge, measuring 1,666 meters. It also features the world’s largest offshore suspension bridge anchor, with a single anchor’s concrete volume approximating 344,000 cubic meters, and includes the world’s longest two-way, eight-lane immersed tube tunnel, spanning 5,035 meters. This project sets a valuable benchmark in cross-sea channel engineering globally.
“Given the complex waterways in this region, part of the link is designed as a tunnel and part as a bridge. To address safety concerns for vehicles in the tunnel, we established an optimal underwater tunnel length of 6.8 kilometers during the design and construction phases. Furthermore, to facilitate rapid transitions between bridge and tunnel traffic, we constructed two artificial islands on the east and west sides of the underwater tunnel,” explained the project manager of the link.
“This is a highly complex project. The construction of this link has made transportation between Zhongshan and Shenzhen more efficient and convenient, reflecting the rapid advancement of China’s infrastructure!” remarked Brazilian expert Rafael Henrique Zerbetto.
The completion of the link has strengthened the economic connections between the east and west sides of the Pearl River Estuary. It connects the Qianhai Pilot Free Trade Zone in Shenzhen, the Nansha Free Trade Zone in Guangzhou, the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, Zhuhai, and the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone in Shenzhen. Additionally, it links the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong and Guangzhou-Zhuhai-Macao innovation and technology corridors, facilitating the more efficient movement of elements such as technology, talent, and finance within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Guangzhou in Guangdong Province has been a prominent port where Sino-foreign trade flourished, attracting numerous foreign merchants who traveled here along the Maritime Silk Road.
Following the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Guangdong continued to serve as China’s “trade window.” To earn foreign exchange and meet the country’s urgent demand for various imported materials necessary for large-scale economic construction, Guangdong capitalized on its geographical proximity to Hong Kong and Macao to host three export fairs from October 1955 to May 1956. In this context, officials from the former Ministry of Foreign Trade and the Guangdong Provincial Government considered hosting a national export fair in Guangzhou.
From April 25 to May 25, 1957, the first Canton Fair took place, covering an exhibition area of 9,600 square meters and showcasing 10,900 categories of goods. The event attracted 1,223 buyers from 19 countries and regions, achieving an export turnover of $17.54 million. Today, the Canton Fair stands as the longest-running and largest comprehensive international trade exhibition in China, often regarded as “China’s No. 1 Exhibition.” As of the first half of 2024, this grand event has successfully hosted 135 sessions, established trade relations with 229 countries and regions worldwide, achieved a cumulative export turnover of approximately $1.5 trillion, and attracted over 9.3 million overseas participants. The fair has significantly enhanced trade exchanges and fostered friendly ties between China and other countries and regions across the globe.
In 2015, the China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone was established in Shenzhen, Guangdong, making it one of the second batch of pilot free trade zones approved in China. Johannes Jozef Bults, a Dutch entrepreneur engaged in import and export in the Qianhai and Shekou Area of Shenzhen, an integral part of the pilot free trade zone, noted that since the establishment of the zone, he has witnessed a continuous optimization of the business environment. “The government’s support, from company registration to everyday operations, has made it incredibly convenient for entrepreneurs to do business here,” he remarked.
Gu Qingyang, an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, expressed that China is currently at a critical stage of development. It invited directors of research institutes affiliated to state-owned enterprises, university presidents, entrepreneurs, scientists, and think tank representatives who have established their operations in the Future Science City to give keynote speeches on building a unique Energy Valley.
The conference released important reports including the Report on the Progress of China’s Energy Revolution: Energy System Revolution (2024), the 2024 Beijing Future Science City Energy Valley Industrial Development White Paper, and A Collection of Excellent Project Samples in Integrated Smart Energy (2024). The Beijing New-Type Energy Storage Demonstration Zone and the Beijing Future Science City Digital Power Innovation Center were also inaugurated during the event.
At the closing session which inaugurated the Future Science City Energy Week, the Development Research Center of the State Council released its annual research topics, while the Changping District Government released 20 application scenarios, including dispersed power generation systems such as photovoltaic generation, commercial and industrial energy storage, supercharging stations, and hydrogen refueling station.
The exhibition and display segment of the conference featured both indoor and outdoor areas, emphasizing industry-specific segments and “immersive” scene designs to facilitate better interaction among participating companies, experts, and other attendees.
The Energy Valley in the Future Science City is tasked with building a globally influential technology innovation hub for the energy sector and spearheading the development of advanced energy industries in Beijing. It possesses outstanding advantages in promoting the development of advanced energy industries, including innovation abilities, comprehensive factors, favorable policies, and full-fledged facilities. Changping District aims to build the Future Science City into a new energy technological innovation hub, as well as a pilot area for green and sustainable development, and make the Energy Valley a new symbol of the country’s dual-carbon strategy, contributing significantly to Beijing’s efforts in forming an international science and technology innovation center.
