The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has held an Aircraft Emergency Tabletop Exercise to educate aviation stakeholders on managing aircraft emergencies and disaster situations.

The exercise took place at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), gathering key players in emergency management and Search and Rescue (SAR) from various aviation agencies.

Director of Air Traffic Services at NAMA, Mr John Tayo, urged participants to take the exercise seriously for better preparedness during real emergencies.

Tayo was represented at the event by the General Manager of NAMA’s SAR Unit, Mr Sunday Iwalaiye.

He stressed that Search and Rescue is a shared responsibility and organised the event into two sessions for greater effectiveness and engagement.

“To ensure success, we separated the stakeholders’ meeting from the actual aircraft emergency exercise.

“We are categorising Search and Rescue responsibilities into groups to define each agency’s specific role clearly,” Tayo said.

He noted that a SAR incident involving aircraft qualifies as an aeronautical emergency, making clarity of roles crucial for efficiency.

Tayo also urged the media to take the event seriously and ensure wide public coverage.

Regional General Manager, South-West at FAAN, Mr Olatokunbo Arewa, praised the coordinators for organising the valuable training session.

“This is worth supporting. No one wants emergencies, but we must be prepared. Stakeholders must take note and know their duties,” he said.

Alh. Safo Jiya from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) highlighted the critical role of safety in all aviation activities.

“Safety is our top priority at NCAA. We’re here to learn and remain focused on our responsibilities,” he stated.

Mr Chris Onohwoakpo, Quality Assurance Manager at MMIA, reiterated the need for readiness in case of unexpected emergencies.

“Though we don’t wish for disasters, we must know how to handle them effectively when they occur,” he said.

Mrs Adenike Ibitayo, Head of SAR at NEMA Lagos, noted that the most recent global aviation disaster was also unforeseen.

“We have representatives from nearly all airlines here. Let’s collaborate, spot weaknesses, and improve our emergency response,” she urged.

Mr Jamin Salami of LASEMA said preventing disasters was just as vital as responding to them, to improve agency preparedness.

Search Mission Coordinator at MMIA, Mr David Igberaese, who led the exercise, said NAMA routinely conducts joint drills with NEMA.

According to him, these collaborations aim to enhance coordination and save the highest number of lives in the shortest possible time.

“ICAO mandates a 24-hour watch for all SAR operations. Since some emergencies occur in remote areas, locals — like farmers — often serve as the first responders,” he noted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlight of the event was a simulated SAR scenario followed by a debriefing session.

Agencies present included the Nigeria Customs Service, Immigration Service, DSS, FRSC, Fire Service, NEMA, LASEMA, and the Nigerian Police.

Also present were the Airline Operators of Nigeria and the Lagos State Ambulance Services, reinforcing inter-agency collaboration. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Wednesday in Abuja urged Nigerian journalists to intensify efforts toward accurate reportage of any developments in the aviation industry.

Mrs Uju Mbamadu, NCAA Assistant General Manager of the Public Relations Department, gave the advice during her remarks at a workshop titled “The Role of Media on Initiatives and Innovation to Improve Aviation Safety and Regulation.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was the second edition organised by the NCAA for the Abuja Transport and Aviation Correspondents’ Association (ATACA).

According to Mbamadu, accurate reporting is essential for maintaining the highest levels of safety, efficiency, and compliance in aviation.

“As media professionals, your ability to accurately report on aviation matters begins with a solid grasp of the NCAA’s mandate.

“From the first edition, we have observed positive changes in news reporting from the aviation sector. Yes, we have.

“That’s why we are motivated to continue this advocacy for accuracy in news writing this year. We commend your relationship with us,” she said.

Ms. Chioma Ubibi, the workshop facilitator, explained that NCAA operated through several directorates, each playing a unique and critical role in aviation regulation.

She listed NCAA’s core responsibilities to include safety oversight, economic regulation, consumer protection, and security collaboration.

Ubibi said the NCAA organisational structure comprised all the directorates known as the internal structure.

“The NCAA is empowered by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Act, 2022, and operates in line with the Chicago Convention of 1944 and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

“The NCAA is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Aviation but maintains functional and administrative autonomy in carrying out its regulatory responsibilities.

“Its directorates include Airworthiness Standards; Operations, Licensing and Training; Aerodrome and Airspace Standards; Air Transport Regulation; and Aviation Security.

“Other directorates are Public Affairs and Consumer Protection; Finance and Accounts; Human Resources and Administration; Corporate Services; Legal Services/Company Secretary; and Special Duties.”

She also urged journalists to be careful in their choice of headlines when writing any aviation story.

“This will help journalists avoid sensationalism and foster intelligent engagement with NCAA’s regulatory actions,” she added.

Speaking at the workshop, the NCAA Media Consultant, Mr Toni Ukachukwu, said the event was organised to boost journalists’ knowledge of aviation to improve reportage.

According to him, understanding the NCAA structure will help prevent misreporting or panic narratives.

He emphasised that understanding the structure would help prevent misreporting or panic narratives.

Ukachukwu encouraged participants to reflect on their role as partners in accurate public communication.

“I want to reiterate that the NCAA’s authority is multi-dimensional, safety, economic regulation, and consumer rights,” he said.(NAN)

The Domestic Airports Cargo Agents Association (DACAA) on Monday hailed the opening of a cargo terminal at the General Aviation Terminal operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in Ikeja.

The Acting Chairman, Board of Trustees, DACAA, Mr John Ekeanya, said that the new cargo hub would improve the contributions of domestic cargo to the country’s economy.

Ekeanya spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that there was a healthy competition in the cargo ecosystem.

He said: “The building and commissioning of a cargo hub at the General Aviation Terminal by FAAN is a very welcome development.

“We used to have something like that but not as comprehensive. Now, we can boast of a cargo hub that means we will no longer depend on only one cargo space at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2).

“Now, we have an alternative, which is a government facility. Our goods will be processed and properly kept.”

On the involvement of the association in the planning and establishment of the cargo hub, Ekeanya said that cargo agents were not carried along.

“I have raised this issue with FAAN management, and we are hopeful that remedies would be made going forward.

“Generally speaking, it is a welcome development, and we are hoping that cargo agents will be integrated into the whole programme.

“I started that by writing to the director of cargo operations at FAAN, and we hope that this is the beginning of a good thing,” he said.

According to Ekeanya, the hub will be mutually beneficial to FAAN and DACAA members.

NAN reports that DACAA had on April 2 called for the establishment of cargo processing centres in all airports in Nigeria to boost economic growth.

On May 9, FAAN unveiled its cargo terminal at GAT. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

In a bid to tackle ₦3.5 trillion agro-produce wastage annually, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Plateau Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday.

The agreement seals a strategic partnership to develop Yakubu Gowon Airport, Jos, into a leading hub for food cargo and agro-export logistics.

FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, stated FAAN would offer professional support, security, and guidance, while the Plateau Government would fund the airport’s upgrade.

“When ₦3.5 trillion worth of food perishes each year, while global markets seek our produce, it’s clear something urgent must change.

“Today marks the beginning of that change, with the Plateau Governor’s visit to FAAN’s headquarters in Lagos signifying a major shift in agro-exports,” she said.

She noted the plan is to transform Yakubu Gowon Airport into a premier food cargo terminal, enhancing Nigeria’s agricultural export infrastructure.

“This partnership is about more than infrastructure. It’s about creating opportunity, empowering farmers, and elevating Plateau’s produce to international markets,” Kuku explained.

She described the initiative as a model of collaboration that aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s goal of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

Kuku called on investors to act promptly and engage with the new opportunity emerging from this partnership.

“To stakeholders witnessing this milestone: the time is now. Plateau offers rich resources; FAAN brings expertise. Global markets await Nigerian produce.

“We invite you to invest in storage, packaging, and transport infrastructure that will connect our farmers with international buyers.

“Today’s signing is not just an agreement — it’s a declaration of economic empowerment for our farmers and a reimagining of regional development.

“FAAN is open for business. Plateau is ready to rise. Nigeria’s agricultural potential is set to take flight,” Kuku said.

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang praised President Tinubu for creating the enabling environment that led to the partnership.

He also commended Aviation Minister Mr Festus Keyamo and Mrs Kuku for their commitment to Nigeria’s agro-export vision.

Mutfwang said FAAN’s earlier visit to Plateau in 2024 was already yielding results and would soon translate into increased revenue.

“Jos once thrived commercially before the market fire. We’re rebuilding to restore it as northern Nigeria’s trading powerhouse,” the governor stated.

He said the new Plateau commodities market would serve as a central aggregation point for agricultural produce in the region.

This, he noted, would complement the upcoming Special Agro Processing Zone backed by the African Development Bank.

Mutfwang also mentioned the dry inland port project, with ongoing discussions involving private investors to bring it to life.

He assured the public and stakeholders that the MoU would be actively implemented and would not be shelved.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring security for all investors operating within Plateau. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Uganda Airlines, have inaugurated the Nigeria-East/Southern Africa Air Cargo Corridor with 50 per cent discount.

The Minister, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, at the inauguration and marking of the African Day in Abuja on Sunday, said it’s a transformative export initiative under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.

Oduwole said the new air cargo corridor would provide Nigerian exporters with access to three key African hubs, Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa.

She added that the air cargo rates are discounted between 50 to 75 per cent in logistics cost, including regulatory charges.

“This initiative marks the fulfilment of a key campaign promise by President Bola Tinubu, to accelerate the diversification of Nigeria’s non-oil exports by leveraging the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA.

“The Federal Government remains committed to supporting Nigerian businesses in scaling their exports across the continent.

“Specifically designed to empower Nigerian enterprises particularly, Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).

“This initiative enables them to expand into African markets with greater confidence, lower costs, faster delivery timelines, and reduced risk,” she said.

The minister said the preferential cargo rates would apply to businesses affiliated with leading national business associations.

According to her, this includes Nigeria Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI), Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME) and Women Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (WCCIMA), among others.

“This will also ensure inclusive participation and coordinated implementation,” she said.

Oduwole said the milestone followed the President’s approval and the gazetting of Nigeria’s Provisional Schedule of Tariff Concessions (PSTCs) in April.

“With support from the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, the ministry has worked to position Nigeria not just as a participant in AfCFTA, but as a leader in shaping and advancing the agreement’s implementation.

“Operating from Lagos and Abuja, the corridor is backed by strong government collaboration,” she said.

Oduwole expressed appreciation to the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of Aviation, as well as the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

She disclosed that they facilitated the success of the inauguration.

Oduwole noted that the inaugural cargo shipment featured a diverse basket of Made-in-Nigeria products, including textiles, cosmetics, fashion accessories, and agro-processed goods.

The minister said that the efforts marked the beginning of a new era for Nigerian exports into African markets.

According to her, all exporters on the historic flight were women-owned businesses.

“These female entrepreneurs were recognised as pioneers, leading the charge in positioning Nigerian enterprises at the forefront of intra-African trade.

“AfCFTA tariffs are now gazetted, enabling Nigerian goods to benefit from lower tariffs across African markets.

“As we mark Africa Day, I want to especially commend and thank the indefatigable Nigerian businesses participating in this inaugural flight.

“This administration will continue to stand with you as you take even bigger and bolder leaps to expand Nigeria’s footprint across the continent,” she said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government (FG) has emphasised the importance of reviving the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Italy.

The move aims to facilitate direct flights between the two countries and boost bilateral trade and investment.

Amb. Anderson Madubuike, Director of Economic Trade and Investment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the call at the Nigeria-Italy Investment Summit 2025 (NIIS 2025) in Abuja on Wednesday.

The summit, organised by Giant Gee Nigeria Limited in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Abuja and the Nigerian Embassy in Rome, is themed “Building Bridges: Unlocking Opportunities.”

Madubuike, represented by Mrs Eucharia Eze, Deputy Director in the ministry, highlighted the challenges passengers face due to the suspension of Alitalia’s operations in Nigeria, which had disrupted direct travel between Nigeria and Italy.

“Since Alitalia ceased operations, it has become difficult for passengers to travel directly between our countries,” he stated, adding that a renewed BASA would contribute to the economic transformation of both nations.

He further noted that Nigeria and Italy shared longstanding relations in sectors such as trade, investment, agriculture, and technological development, and that the BASA agreement could unlock untapped economic potential.

“Italy is a significant trading partner for Nigeria. Both countries aim to diversify their economies and attract foreign direct investment.

“I believe this summit will help foster impactful partnerships,” he added.

Amb. Augustine Chigbolu, Managing Director of Giant Gee Nigeria Limited, also emphasised the importance of reinstating an Italian airline service to alleviate travel challenges between the two nations.

He noted that before Alitalia’s withdrawal, the flight duration between Nigeria and Italy was just five hours. However, it now takes between 16 to 18 hours due to layovers.

Chigbolu also envisioned the summit as a dynamic platform to promote sustainable growth and meaningful partnerships between the two countries.

Roberto Bocca, an Italian entrepreneur, echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the strategic and growing partnership between Italy and Nigeria.

He expressed confidence that the revival of Alitalia flights would strengthen trade and investment opportunities, particularly in sectors like energy, infrastructure, and aviation.

Bocca also highlighted Italy’s ongoing investments in Africa and expressed hope that Nigeria would become a primary market for Italian businesses. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Oyo State Government says Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Alakia, Ibadan, will begin international flight operations by June 2026.

The Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, confirmed this in Ibadan.

Oyelade said the international terminal, currently at 15 per cent completion, is expected to be ready for international flights by June 2026.

He added that efforts were in top gear to upgrade the airport to meet international standards.

The upgrade includes extending the runway from 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres, the commissioner explained.

He said the runway will also be widened from 45 metres to 60 metres to handle wide-body aircraft.

The airfield lighting has been upgraded to CAT C, and firefighting response enhanced to boost safety.

“Facilities for Customs, Immigration, and other essential agencies are also being put in place,” Oyelade noted.

However, he said local flight operations will resume by the end of this year.

He stated that the runway, apron, taxiway and blast pads are now 55 per cent complete.

According to him, these upgrades will allow local flights to resume once approved by the appropriate regulatory authorities.

Oyelade said the development aligns with the government’s vision to modernise the Ibadan airport.

“By improving our infrastructure, we enhance domestic travel and prepare for international operations,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls the upgrade project was inaugurated on Sept. 18, 2024.

The airport was temporarily shut in March 2025 to accelerate construction work. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Gabriel Agbeja

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, has called for the urgent implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) to foster regional integration and enhance intra-African connectivity.

Keyamo made the call on Monday, while delivering the keynote address at the 18th Plenary and Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG) held in Abuja.

According to him, improving air connectivity within Africa will significantly reduce travel time, lower costs, and provide optimal satisfaction for users.

He noted that enhanced connectivity was an asset that boosts the global competitiveness of cities, states, and regions.

“I want to highlight the urgent need to implement SAATM for the benefit of our sub-region and the entire African continent.

“SAATM represents a bold and visionary step toward achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and unlocking the immense potential of air connectivity across our continent,” Keyamo said.

In spite of multiple declarations and political will, he noted that progress on SAATM had been slow, with airspace fragmentation remaining a barrier to regional integration.

He added that SAATM, if fully implemented, would enable smoother movement of passengers and cargo with minimal transit points and competitive prices.

He urged member states to go beyond verbal commitments and take coordinated, deliberate steps to bring the initiative to life.

“Our skies must no longer be defined by closed borders, but by open opportunity,” he said, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the ideals of the BAG.

In his welcome address, Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, reiterated that the meeting was convened to strengthen collaboration on aviation safety, security, regulatory harmonisation, and sustainable development across the region.

He emphasised Nigeria’s support for BAG’s goals and the “No Country Left Behind” initiative by the International Civil Aviation Organisation”, which seeks to ensure equal participation of all states in global aviation standards.

“Let us keep our eyes on the prize – a safe, secure, and unified aviation sector in West Africa,” Najomo added.

Also speaking, Director-General of the Banjul Accord Group, Mr Fansu Bojang, highlighted that the group currently comprised seven member states: Cape Verde, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

According to him, the group aims to promote safe and efficient development of civil aviation within and beyond member states.

This, he said, could be achieved through agencies like the Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organisation (BAGASOO), responsible for aviation safety oversight and compliance.

“There is also the Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA), which handles aircraft accident investigations,” he added. (NAN)
