Miss Tourism Nigeria, Joy Ekekwe, on Tuesday urged hoteliers to participate in marketing Nigerian historical and tourism sites.

The 26-year-old financial consultant made the call during the 19th AKWAABA Africa Travel and Tourism Market, held in Lagos from Sept. 3 to Sept. 5.
Ekekwe said that marketing historical sites should not solely be left to tour operators, noting that every practitioner in the tourism and hospitality industries must be involved in it.
She said this was the only way hoteliers could add value to other value chains within the tourism industry.
She also explained that this would  place Nigeria on the global map of tourism as nations begin to realise the ennormous tourism potential that Nigeria is endowed with.
“Nigerian hoteliers need to be patriotic to an extent that they intentionally market historical and tourism sites across the nation.
“Lodging in an hotel should go beyond mere relaxation, visitors to hotels can be encouraged to visit some historical sites,  which would help boost patronage to those sites and improve the growth of inbound tourism,” she said.
Ekekwe advised Nigerians to always take pride in everything that stands as their identity, in terms of language, dance, culture, music and all.
She said Nigerians must also begin to appreciate the tourism potential the nation is endowed which include waterfalls, monoliths, crafts, caves, game reserves, among others.
She noted that it was high time Nigerians begin to see these endowments as rare treasure and deliberately market them to woo both local and international tourists.
Earlier, Bayo Adedeji, Chief Executive Officer of Wakanow Group, advised practitioners in the tourism industry to engage technology in their operations.
Adedeji noted that technology is important to selling tourism across the globe.
“Without maximising the potential in technology, operating tourism business could be chaotic, technology enhances the business of travels and tourism.
“Government has supported us enough, we need to engage technology in all we do to perform optimally,” he said. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

ACCI targets 1 million jobs from Nigeria-Turkish healthcare, infrastructure partnership

ACCI targets 1 million jobs from Nigeria-Turkish healthcare, infrastructure partnership

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said the partnership between Nigeria and Ankara, Turkey had the prospects of creating over one million jobs in the healthcare and infrastructure delivery system.

Dr Sijuade Kayode, Vice-President, Commerce of ACCI, said this on Friday when some team members of Turquaz Health, a health tourism organisation and Ankara Commerce Industry visited ACCI on the quest for possible collaboration.

The Turquaz health group is interested in bridging the gap in healthcare services between the two countries and offers a wide range of healthcare solutions.

Kayode recalled that Turkey’s and Nigeria’s relationship dated back to the 1970’s and it would provide the opportunity to reap more benefits.

He said that they were wooing their partners to collaborate with the country in defence, healthcare, education and infrastructure, among other areas.

Kayode said: “Government provides the policy, the enabling environment for the private sector to thrive.

“We are looking at investments in the health, education, infrastructure, which are key to creating jobs and boosting the economy.

“The partnership, investments will create about one million jobs; in the infrastructure sector alone, 500,000 jobs can be created in a year.

“In the education sector, you can create a million jobs from this, all we need government to do is to provide the enabling environment, policies, funding that will cause private sector to thrive.’’

According to him, government can only create ten per cent of jobs needed in the society.

Kayode added that the ACCI team would be in Turkey in October to consolidate on the discussions and further actions.

Mr Naci Tamer, Vice Chief Executive Officer of Turquaz Health, said they were interested in promoting health tourism, as well as collaborate to provide expertise in healthcare capacity and healthcare consulting services.

He said: “Cooperation between ACCI can significantly enhance economic ties between countries by creating a conducive environment for business to explore opportunities and engage in mutually beneficial ventures.

“These areas can serve as a foundation for building stronger relations between Ankara, Turkey and Abuja, Nigeria.”

Tamer listed other possible areas of collaboration to include; energy and infrastructure, ICT and innovation, cultural exchange, SME development and sustainable development.

Mrs Victoria Akai, Director-General of ACCI, said instead of promoting medical tourism, it would be profitable to develop expertise locally to reduce capital flight.

“Nigerians keep leaving this country on medical tourism, there is a lot of profit in healthcare in Nigeria from the perspective of the business community and that is capital flight.

“This motivated us to connect with the Turkish and see how we can improve our medical healthcare and leave the money in Nigeria.

“We are looking at partnerships and hopefully investments because we have big hospitals here that can deliver with the right tools,’’ she said.

Akai added that the exodus of medical practitioners was a concern, hence they were also looking for ways to bring in experts that could pay well and retain the country’s health workers locally.

According to her, medical tourism is a very big industry in Nigeria, whereas Nigerians travel out to treat common health ailments.

“We are looking at partnering to develop health infrastructure, retaining the money in Nigeria in a shared prosperity manner with Turkey,’’ Akai said.

Dr Kolawole Owoka, Chairman of Medical and Trade Industry Group in ACCI, said Nigeria was a large country with vibrant people that just needed infrastructure and the enabling environment.

Owoka further said they would want to reverse the trend of medical tourism, adding that they had alternatively requested for investments from Turkey into Nigeria to boost the healthcare system.

Highlight of the event was the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between ACCI and the Turkish health team, alongside Ankara Commerce Industry. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Stakeholders in the tourism industry have called on the new Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, to be purposeful with a view to moving the sector to the next level.

Some of the stakeholders, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday,  described the establishment of the ministry as a welcome development.

The President of Hotel Owners Forum Abuja (HOFA), Mrs Oluwafunmilayo Kazeem, said the ministry should focus solely on tourism related matters.

“The minister should look at the area of effective security in hotels, where tourists normally put up.

“There is also the need to sanitise the hospitality industry to checkmate quacks and ensure safety of tourists and guests in hotels.

“Also, the minister should ensure the classification of hotels in the country, this will help advance the sector and attract tourists from across the globe.

“She should also look at the area of multiple taxes. The sector, especially the hospitality industry is suffering from multiple taxes and it is affecting our operation.

“Though I know that the ministry does not have the mandate on power supply but the aspect is very important to our operation,” she said.

The  President of Youth in Tourism, Mr Daniel Okon, said that the establishment of the stand-alone ministry of Tourism was a dream come true.

According to him, the sector has been on comatose for a long time.

“The merging of Information and Culture Ministry was a disadvantage to the tourism sector, because all attention was shifted to only information.

“But now that a ministry is created, to God be the Glory. Now tourism would be given the needed attention and thus taken to the next level.

In the same vain, the President of Middle Belt Tourism Association, Mr Benedith Terso, said the establishment of the ministry would go a long way to address the challenges bedeviling the sector.

Mr Olugbenga Adebayo, Chief Executive Officer of Gadeshire Travel Company, on Tuesday called on the new Minister of Tourism, Ms Lola Ade-John, to re-evaluate the nation’s tourism masterplan.
Adebayo while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said this was neccesary to ensure the current realities in the industry were inculcated in the masterplan for the advancement of the industry.
He congratulated the minister on her appointment and advised on the need to work with industry players as tourism is mostly private sector driven.
“I congratulate the tourism minister on her appointment and advise her to look into Nigeria’s tourism masterplan and see how the previous documents can be merged with current realities of contemporary tourism.
“And as a matter of urgency, direct the implementation of various action plans  that are achievable.
“The minister needs to work with industry players and get involved with the industry activities so as to have swift understanding of the industry and have a first hand experience of what policies that can be of immense benefit for us as a nation and for all the stakeholders.
“There is the need for the minister to liaise from time to time with other allied ministries and agencies like Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Aviation, Nigeria Immigration and more.
“Let there be a great synergy and great working relationship with all these allied agencies,” he said.
Adebayo expressed optimism that things would be different now that there is a stand-alone ministry for tourism.
He said this development was also a boost for Nigeria’s allied industry of culture and creative economy as well as entertainment, for having their own stand-alone ministry.
“We can now be rest assured that some of great policies that we have been pushing for proper implementation will have direct attention of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and somebody will directly be held accountable for every activity and operations of the industry.
“Tourism industry in Nigeria has suffered a lot of setback and the industry just needs leadership that can hit the ground running.
Adebayo reiterated the need for the minister to engage stakeholders across the tourism value chain for sporadic growth of the industry. (NAN) (nannews.

The traditional ruler of Ikate Kingdom in Lagos State, Oba Saheed Elegushi, has praised the Lagos State Government and other state governors who accorded recognition to the traditional festival celebration, Isese Day.

Elegushi,  during the celebration of the Day in his palace on Sunday, said the recognition would promote inclusion and equality.

“The recognition is  long due, as traditional worshipers are part of the society and they belong to the same community as other faiths.

“It is only appropriate they get their own holiday as a mark of respect to their beliefs as it is with Christianity and Islam.

“I am happy that after years of making the calls to the government, the date is now on the calendar and recognized by the Lagos state government and some other governors in the South-West,” Elegushi said.

The traditional ruler also appealed to the Federal Government to ensure that the date becomes a national holiday.

According to him, believers who are not of the two known faiths, also contribute to the peace and progress of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Isese Day, a day set aside to recognise and celebrate traditional religion worship  is celebrated annually on Aug. 20.

Osun and Ogun state governments have joined Lagos state to declare Monday as public holiday for Isese Festival. (NAN)

The Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) has congratulated Lola Ade-John, the designated Minister of Tourism, urging her to devise ways to create a development fund for the growth of the industry.

Mrs Ime Udo, National President of NATOP,  said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

“We congratulate the new minister for tourism, with her background in Information Technology and being in the technological age, she must bring to bear her expertise in data collation and tourism technology.

“And as a former banker, we expect that she will be able to devise ways through which tourism development fund can  be created to advance the industry.

“One of the major inhibitors for tourism growth is the lack of funding and inability to attract investors.

“Tourism is first of all a business and should be approached as such,” she said.

Udo advised the minister to embark on physical tour of some of the heritage sites within the country in view of the deplorable state of most of the sites.

She said Ade-John would have to connect with the tourism board in each state to ascertain the current state of their activities to evaluate and plan on tourism development.

“The minister must be very intentional about making Nigeria a destination, she must immediately call for a roundtable stakeholders’ meeting to rub minds and know the true state of things in the industry.

Udo said the integration of a Minister of Tourism in Nigeria with an Information Technology background presents numerous intriguing possibilities for the country’s tourism sector.

She said the development and promotion of e-tourism platforms could provide a seamless experience for tourists.

According to her, such platforms can include online visa applications, digital city guides, and easy online booking for accommodations and attractions.

She said leveraging technologies such as  Internet of Things (IoT) could help develop “smart tourist destinations”.

“For instance, smart signage provides real-time information or smart bracelets for tourists that offer guided tours and ensure safety

“The minister’s expertise can drive the digital transformation of Nigeria’s tourism sector, from online ticketing systems to virtual tours of historical sites, the possibilities are vast.

“It is certain that she would understand the importance of data, which will lead to better-informed decisions based on tourism trends, visitor preferences, and feedback.

“Being in a technological age, historical sites and museums could be enhanced with Augumented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology, providing interactive experiences and bringing Nigeria’s rich history to life,” she said. (NAN) (nannews.ng)
