Tinubu tasks African leaders on eco-friendly tourism

Tinubu tasks African leaders on eco-friendly tourism

President Bola Tinubu has called on African countries to adopt policies that promote eco-friendly tourism and preserve cultural heritage across the continent.
Tinubu, represented by the Vice-President Kashim Shettima, made the call on Wednesday while declaring open the 68th meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for Africa (CAF) in Abuja.
He sought practical solutions and alliances that would boost investment in tourism infrastructure, deepen the sector’s role in actualising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the African continent.
According to him, the target is to make sure Africa becomes the heart of global discourse on how to harness tourism’s full potential to boost the continent’s economy.
The President declared Nigeria’s support for sustainable tourism practices across Africa, which he said reflected the continent’s unique challenges.
“By collaborating with regional bodies, such as the African Union, ECOWAS and UN Tourism, Nigeria encourages other African nations to adopt policies promoting eco-friendly tourism and preserving cultural heritage.
“This collaboration includes sharing best practices, tourism training, developing joint marketing campaigns for sustainable tourism and improving infrastructure to support intra-African travel.
“Through these regional initiatives, Africa can foster a continent-wide movement toward tourism that benefits both the people and the environment, driving long-term prosperity for Africa,” he said
The President observed that tourism goes beyond travelling or visiting historic sites, waterfalls, mountains, and parks.
He maintained that the sector “is an engine of local economies, a catalyst for social understanding, and a bridge that unites cultures.
“The advent of technology and creativity has transformed tourism and its opportunities.
“Therefore, it is appropriate that this conference highlight the impact of AI, Innovation, and Creative Industries on the tourism sector,” he added.
Tinubu highlighted the role of Nigeria’s creative industries in global tourism, which encompassed music, film, fashion, literature and digital arts.
The President said the sector has “emerged as a powerful driver of economic growth, making significant contributions to the country’s GDP, job creation and economic diversification.”
“Nigeria’s Nollywood is one of the largest film industries in the world, generating substantial revenue from domestic and international markets.
“Similarly, the music and fashion industries have propelled Nigeria’s global cultural influence and generated income and employment opportunities.
“As we chart a new course for tourism in Africa, one thing is clear: the government cannot build the sector alone.
“It needs a partnership with the private sector. The sector’s growing complexity and opportunities demand this strategic partnership,” he said.
He implored participants “to focus on practical solutions and collaborative strategies that will strengthen intra-African travel, boost investment in tourism infrastructure and empower local communities.
Tinubu also enjoined participants to deepen tourism’s role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and making African tourism the heart of the global conversation.
The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, urged African nations to leverage innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), and creative industries to unlock the continent’s vast potential in global tourism.
“I am passionate about Nigeria and the mission and commitment of President Tinubu. I believe in it because of his vision for Nigeria, which I believe will enable the country to take a seat in the comity of global nations as a developed nation.
“I pray the same for every African nation, and urge us all to rise together,” she said.
The minister noted that President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is the guiding principle for Nigeria’s sectoral transformation, emphasising that “Africa stands at the forefront of change.
“The 21st century demands that we build economies not just from the ground but on people-powered prosperity, through tourism, culture, the creative economy and the arts,” she said.
The Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Amb. Zurab Pololikashvi, commended the Tinubu administration for supporting the transformation of the tourism industry in Nigeria.
Underscoring tourism as the future of Africa, he said the continent is indeed the new frontier in world tourism, given its huge potential and limitless opportunities for innovation and creativity.
Pololikashvi urged leaders on the continent to address issues related to connectivity across the region by reviewing existing visa regimes in a bid to ease the movement of tourists across Africa and beyond.
Sen. Ireti Kingibe, representing FCT, encouraged stakeholders across Africa to think boldly, as Africa is not just participating in the digital future of tourism.
“Today’s gathering is an opportunity to amplify the stories of home-grown innovations that attract tourists from the grassroots to the global stage.
“Let us use this space to exchange best practices, build cross-border collaborations and generate actionable strategies that place communities, especially women and youths, at the heart of our development agenda,” she said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC) has projected that Africa’s tourism sector will create over 80 million new jobs in the next ten years.

The Director-General of CBAAC, Mrs Aisha Augie, gave the projection during a two-day international conference organised by the centre on Tuesday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event is in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos, and the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS).

The theme of the event is ‘Cultural Tourism, Creative Economy and Sustainable Development in Africa’.

Augie, while describing tourism as a pillar for economic revival, said the industry was central to the transformation of the continent.

Citing the World Travel and Tourism Council, Augie said: “Tourism contributed $168 billion to Africa’s GDP in 2024 and poised to create over 80 million new jobs in the coming decade.

“They are not just statistics, they represent livelihoods, opportunities and hope for the millions of Africans.”

Highlighting festivals including the Ojude Oba, Osun-Osogbo, Calabar Carnival and durbars, Augie said tourism was more than a journey but an experience of culture.

She noted that tourists were not just visitors but participants, consumers and investors.

Emphasising the potential, she said current projections showed that tourism revenue would reach $25.1 billion in 2025.

“Every visitor who attends a local festival, buys a hand-packed event ticket or watches a traditional performance, is directly investing in Africa’s creative product.

“This connection between tourism and creativity forms a system that powers communities, supports artisans and tells our stories of the global stage.

“Across the continent, our creative industries, film, music, fashion, visual arts, storytelling, design, are thriving.

“They are currently generating over $4.2 billion dollars annually and have the potential to create up to $20 billion annually,” she said.

Augie said there was a need for the creative sector to be positioned to benefit equitably from this growth.

She, however, said that in spite of the growth, sustainability was low.

She added that growth without sustainability was not progress but a short-lived impulse.

The director-general urged participants at the event to commit actions that uplift Africa’s traditions, honour heritage, empower youths and protect the planet. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun has described cultural festivals like Ojude Oba as vital tools for stimulating the local economy and enhancing global recognition.

Speaking on Sunday at the 2025 edition of the Ojude Oba Festival in Ijebu-Ode, Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage—not just for the Ijebu people but for the benefit of humanity at large.

“This celebration aligns seamlessly with our administration’s development philosophy, the Building Our Future Together agenda,” Abiodun said.

“Festivals like Ojude Oba are critical to our vision of promoting the local economy, attracting global visibility, and fortifying our cultural capital.

“Our cultural heritage is a powerful tool for national development.”

He described Ojude Oba as a symbol of communal harmony, where religion, tradition, and modernity coexist under a shared identity.

According to the governor, the festival has evolved from a regional celebration into a living heritage that strengthens cultural roots and offers direction in a world marked by increasing social fragmentation.

“Ojude Oba is now a vibrant fulcrum of our culture—our pride, our values, and our continuity,” he said.

“This year’s theme, Celebrating Our Roots, Preserving Our Future, captures the very essence of this gathering.”

He noted the growing popularity of the festival among youth both at home and abroad, calling for deliberate efforts to accommodate its expanding influence.

“This festival has outgrown its current scope. We must take bold steps to scale it up,” Abiodun added.

The governor, who highlighed the festival’s broader role, said Ojude Oba had become a dynamic platform for tourism, youth engagement, and entrepreneurship, and pledged his administration’s commitment to expanding its reach and socio-economic impact.

In a goodwill message, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Deputy, Mr Olayide Adelani, praised the festival for advancing tourism and local enterprise.

He described culture as “a dynamic vehicle that drives economic growth,” saying “Ojude Oba creates jobs, promotes peace, and attracts foreign investment.”

Also speaking, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Hannatu Musawa, highlighted Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, which she said had endured through generations and gained international appreciation.

She disclosed that the Federal Government was working closely with state governments to harness the cultural uniqueness of each region for national development.

“Ogun holds a significant place in Nigeria’s history through its contributions from illustrious sons and daughters,” she said.

“It is time we fully explored what culture can offer our country.”

The minister expressed hope that Ojude Oba would continue to grow, eventually becoming a major attraction for foreign tourists. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ecobank Nigeria has unveiled the fourth edition of its annual Adire Lagos Fair, providing a direct solution for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking market access and growth.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exhibition, featuring over 120 exhibitors from across the nation, addresses key challenges faced by these businesses while also promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
The four-day event, holding at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Lagos, had in attendance vendors, fashion and cultural enthusiasts, creatives and shoppers.
Originating from Abeokuta, Adire Textile is an indigenous indigo-dyed cloth that uses different wax-resistant methods to create beautiful designs.
Ms Omoboye Odu, Head of SMEs Partnerships and Collaborations, Ecobank Nigeria, said the fair was the bank’s way of promoting the country’s cultural heritage while supporting SMEs to scale up to global markets.
Odu explained how the fashion industry had embraced Adire across the globe while listing top brands selling the fabric in the international markets.
Explaining the artistry, she recalled the efforts from early producers of the 1930s, 40s and 50s that imprinted designs, concepts and details not easily replicable to scale up.
“It takes a lot of work and efforts, which is why the new designs are not as intricate as old ones.
“We’ve come to realise that the fashion industry globally today is easily more than $100 billion.
“African fashion is estimated at about $30 billion. We have people like the IFC, the World Bank, doing things to promote African fashion,” she said.
According to her, the bank is improving on the annual fair adding and it is getting bigger and better every year.
She said that 20,000 people visited the fair in 2024 and that this year would have more big industry players among the exhibitors.
Odu said that Adire is homegrown and a national heritage uniting the nation.
“We’ve shown you the beauty of this fabric. It’s not just a fashion piece, but something that unites all of us. We’ve seen fabric from the North and also from Ghana.
“We’ve also seen fabric from the East, from outside of Lagos, to show you that this one item that we see as a fashion item can bring all of us together.
“At Ecobank, beyond just our heritage, we’re looking for that pulling factor to unite Nigeria, and also a platform where our creatives can become scalable and make that design. Ultimately, we all want to make money,” she said.
She said the bank had studied the needs of SMEs and providing them, including access to finance, market, capacity development, governance platform and structure.
“Last year, the highest selling vendor sold 27 million Naira in four days. That was a six-month sale in four days here. That’s what this platform does,” Odu added.
She explained that the bank had also developed an app that could link global vendors and buyers to the Nigerian market.
She said the fair, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the bank for SMEs, was to display their wares free of charge while making money and also promoting the unity and economy of Nigeria.
Some exhibitors, who spoke with NAN, explained how customers were embracing Adire because of new innovations constantly introduced to it.
Ms Fadilat Lawal, Managing Director, Sanyaolu Trading Stores, Abeokuta, explained how the love for Adire had evolved and making Nigeria more globally repositioned and relevant.
“People love Abeokuta Adire because of its durability and we have several designs representing various things in our culture,” she said.
Ms Cynthia Uma, Creative Director, Cecesignature Unisex Clothing, Lagos, explained how Adire had become a globally accepted brand, attracting huge revenue for her business. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
