The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, on Tuesday visited the Oluwo of Iwoland in Osun, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanni, and called for continued relationship between the two towns.
Owoade, accompanied by his wife, Abiwumi, and other chiefs, said that he came to the town to thank the Oluwo for attending his coronation ceremony in April.
The traditional ruler also said that Oluwo called to congratulate him when his name was announced as the Alaafin-elect.
“I came to see Oluwo because he was at my coronation ceremony in April.
“Even when my name was mentioned as Alaafin-elect, Oluwo called to congratulate me.
“It is also good to come around to pay him a courtesy visit,” he said.
The Alaafin, who noted that Oyo and Iwo had been enjoying good relationship for years, said that he also came to Iwo to ensure that the relationship continued.
Owoade, who spoke in Yoruba, said that his predecessor, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, had a good relationship with Iwo, hence, the relationship should be sustained.
“Iwo and Oyo have been enjoying good relationship for years, even with my predecessor and I want that relationship to continue,” he said.
Owoade urged other traditional rulers in Iwo to continue to work with Oluwo with an open mind.
He said they should also continue to support and cooperate with the traditional ruler for the development of the town.
In his remarks, Oba Akanbi thanked Alaafin for the visit, adding that it will boost the relationship between the two towns.
Oluwo, who described the Alaafin title as supreme to all other traditional titles in Yorubaland, said that the title was originally for Oduduwa descendants.
“I don’t know any other title in Yorubaland that is superior to the Alaafin.
“Alaafin will continue to be Alaafin because that is the title that Oramiyan adopted and I will also adopt the saying.
“Henceforth, I will also want to be called Alaafin of Iwo and we will inform government about it,” he said.
Akanbi also said that with the humility and exposure of the Alaafin, Oyo would witness peace and unprecedented development.
According to him, the existing good relationship between the town will continue to flourish.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Owoade was crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in April 2025 as the successor to the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The President of Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), Mrs Bolaji Mustapha, has called on government agencies, industry players and the media to increase efforts in promoting the nation’s untapped tourism potential.

This, she said, would attract both local and international tourists.

Mustapha made the call during a Roundtable Meeting with the Association of Nigerian Journalists and Writers of Travel (ANJET) on Wednesday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was aimed at discussing how Nigeria’s local destinations sites can be promoted to boost tourism.

Mustapha, who is also the Managing Director of Grand Express Tour Centre (GET Centre), said years of grassroots advocacy by the operators was beginning to yield results.

According to her, NATOP has focused on identifying new tourism sites across the country that can be promoted globally.

“People are beginning to see those things we are trying to put out there,” she said.

She said the association had identified some destination sites in Ondo State.

Mustapha disclosed that the association planned to explore the sites, with stakeholders, during the NATOP Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will hold in July in the state.

Some of the sites include Idanre Hills, Araromi Beach, Nibanola Farms, a 500-acre land with a hotel overlooking a lake, and La Campagne Tropicana Hills.

“We went to do a familiarisation trip; we went around to see some of the venues where we are going to be using.

“We want to identify some products, and tell the people in charge to see how they can improve it; how they can make it very habitable for us to sell.

“It’s a mind-blowing thing for me that we can have this kind of thing.

“We had breakfast on a very beautiful hill on top of the mountain. It’s just amazing,” she said.

Mustapha, however noted that the operators had found some challenges while promoting tourism destinations.

Some of the challenges, she said, included lack of innovation, inflation, multiple taxation, security among others.

She urged the government to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that the products are sold.

She further urged Nigerians to patronise the sites, and not wait for only holidays to travel.

Also, the General Secretary of NATOP, Otunba Michael Balogun, said collaboration among stakeholders in the industry was very important because tourism could not thrive in isolation.

Balogun, who is also the Chief Operating Officer of Tour2Nigeria, said apart from collaboration, there was also a need to change the narrative put out about the nation.

Decrying the negative narratives about the nation, and citing countries such as U.S. and South Africa, Balogun said their crime rates was not projected in the media as it is.

He said Africa should no longer be regarded as just a continent but a voice, vision and heritage that needed to be sold.

According the him, a lot of development is ongoing in the country that is not projected to the public.

“If it’s about infrastructure, we travel these roads, we see these things.

“The last time we went to Ondo, there was no construction going on, just for us to get on it again, a new road was being built.

“Which is a good thing because now the government is working,” he said.

He urged the government, particularly the media, to collaborate with stakeholders to sell Nigeria.

He further urged stakeholders, including hotels and resorts owners, airlines, and logistics companies, to give discounts to tour operators in order to reduce the cost of tour packages for tourists.

The President of ANJET, Mr Okorie Uguru, commended NATOP for its passion, efforts and sacrifice in pushing the narrative of Nigeria’s assets and potential.

He pledged the support of ANJET to echo the voice of operators by pushing positive narratives, both locally and internationally.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The National Gallery of Art (NGA) on Tuesday marked the 2025 Children’s Day celebration with an art exhibition to promote national unity and cultural understanding.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event had no fewer than 600 children from various schools in attendance.

The exhibition is with the theme, ‘Harmony in Diversity: Art as a Unifying Force’.

The Director-General of NGA, Mr Ahmed Sodangi, said the theme was a reminder of the power of unity in diversity, and the ability of art to bridge gaps that sometimes divide the nation.

Sodangi, who was represented by the Curator of NGA, Lagos, Dr Celestine Agoziem, said art creates spaces where harmony, respect and mutual appreciation could flourish, especially among children.

Speaking to the children, Sodangi said: “Arts speaks to our shared humanity; it transcends language, borders, and even time.

“Whether through painting, music, dance or drama, art uses the universal language of emotion to foster understanding, connection, and acceptance.

“You, our young ones, are living proof of this vision.

“Through your creativity, whether you’re drawing, singing, acting, or dancing, you bring to life the spirit of unity and enrich our world with new perspectives.”

He noted that though the world might seem divided, art could help break barriers, explore different perspectives and celebrate the beauty of collective experiences.

Sodangi urged institutions, both public and private, to be committed in nurturing the artistic talents of children and also empower them to express themselves freely and confidently.

He further urged the children to have compassion, empathy and deep respect for the different cultures and experiences that make up the world.

The Curator of NGA, Lagos, Dr Celestine Agoziem, said unity in diversity was a concept that acknowledges and celebrates the uniqueness of each individual.

Agoziem noted that Nigeria, as a country with over 250 ethnic groups and over 500 languages, could experience challenges including ethnic tensions and misunderstandings.

He, however, said when individuals from various backgrounds and cultures come together, the differences would enrich their communities and make them more vibrant.

He urged the participants to continue to push artistic boundaries that bring people together, celebrate one another’s differences and promote national unity.

NAN also reports that there was a showcase of various paintings from children from different schools across the state.

Cultural dances from different tribes including Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, were also displayed at the event. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Food Insecurity: Ayatse urges FG to address attacks on famers in Benue

Food Insecurity: Ayatse urges FG to address attacks on famers in Benue

Prof. Felicia Ayatse, wife of the Paramount Ruler of the Tiv nation (Tor Tiv), Prof. James Ayatse, has urged the Federal Government to address incessant attacks on farmers in Benue State to curb food insecurity.

Ayatse made the call at the 2025 Mba’ Apostoli Festival, a fiesta that highlights food and cultural heritage, in Abuja.

The festival, with the theme, “Seeds of Prosperity: Agric Meets Culture”, had in attendance traditional rulers, culture enthusiasts, exhibitors and farmers, government functionaries, as well as sons and daughters of Tiv nation, among others.

According to the royal mother, the escalating attacks on farmers and destruction of crops by suspected militia herdsmen in the state’s border communities is a major threat to food production.

She noted that as Nigeria grapples with rising hunger and systemic food insecurity, the Benue situation needed to be addressed as a “national emergency” because of the strategic place it occupies in food production.

Ayatse, therefore, appealed to the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to direct security agencies to intensify efforts towards restoring lasting peace and ensure adequate security of affected communities.

“If there is any time we need to fight this hunger and food scarcity, it is now, and I want to use this opportunity to appeal to every one of us, particularly those who can help us reach the Federal Government.

“Although the Federal Government is making efforts to ensure there is peace and normalcy in Benue State, more needs to be done, because farming has seriously been brought to a halt in the state.

“The farmers are not going to their farms because of insecurity; they are being hunted and killed on a daily basis.

“If this trend is allowed to continue, hunger will wreck every part of Nigeria because Benue State has been, as the name implies, the food basket of the nation.

“Benue State occupies a very strategic position in the production of food in Nigeria, so we must ensure there is peace in the state.

“Besides ensuring there is peace and there is security of life and property in Benue State, I call on the Federal Government to help farmers in Benue State.

“The insecurity has been very terrible in the state, but it has never reached the dimension we have experienced this year, so the Federal Government should do whatever it can to assist the farmers.

“Otherwise, hunger is starring in our faces, not just in Benue State, but it is definitely going to affect the entire nation,” she said.

Ayatse, however, commended organisers of the Mba’ Apostoli Festival for using it as a platform for showcasing culture and food production, particularly the Tiv cultural heritage.

“I want to ask the organisers to continue this very important festival, combining agriculture and culture, and we must ensure that technology is seriously encouraged and used at all levels of farming.

“I look forward to having this festival celebrated next year in Benue State,” she said.

Earlier in his welcome address, Operations Manager of the Festival, Dr Cletus Akwaya, said the annual cultural fiesta was aimed at preserving agricultural heritage, culture and building food-secure communities.

He, therefore, called on relevant government institutions, donor organisations and Nigerians of goodwill to ensure continuity of the festival in the FCT.

“This year’s theme reflects our determination to uplift not just our culture of farming, but also the vital role our crops: yam, cassava, sweet potato and cocoyam play in nutrition, food security and economic development.

“Support for this festival is support for food security, it is support for youth engagement, for rural development, for nutrition advocacy and for cultural preservation,” he said.

In his keynote address, Dr Khalid Ishiak, former Ag. Director General, National Agricultural Seeds Council, said agric and culture were intertwined, with culture influencing agricultural practices, knowledge and the value placed on food and farming.

He, however, noted that Nigeria’s inability to meet up with required optimum food production level has been attributed to factors such as population growth, climate change, conflict and displacement, post-harvest losses, among others.

In her remarks, Aveseh Asough, the Festival Director, said the annual event highlights both food and cultural heritage, fostering development, intercultural integration and promotion of peace in Nigeria.

“Now in its 7th year, the Mba’ Apostoli Festival has grown into a landmark celebration of culture, agriculture and community development.

“From its humble beginning in 2019, the festival has evolved into a globally recognised platform, attracting thousands of participants annually, from farmers and food processors to cultural enthusiasts, youth groups and development actors,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) has laid out a strategic roadmap for its upcoming film market, established to reposition the continent as a major player in the global content economy.

The market, AFRIFF Film and Content Market (AFCM), is expected to feature curated showcases of African and international content, connect creators with financiers and partners, and encourage global collaboration.

The Founder of AFRIFF, Ms Chioma Ude, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

According to Ude, the industry is going through a phase where a film and content market can significantly affect the nation’s industry in several ways.

She said the film and content market could attract both improved quality and cultural benefits to the film industry.

“A film and content market is the economic pulse of the industry.

“It’s where scripts are pitched for consideration, where films are funded, bought and sold.

“A film and content market attracts larger investments from global film-making companies and streaming services, leading to higher revenue and growth,” she said.

Ude said the festival would begin with training and educating the industry professionals about expectations and benefits of a film market before it actually takes off.

She said the deliverables expected from AFRIFF included bringing buyers streaming platforms, sellers, countries, and brands interested in films to be part of pitching sessions and panels.

“Also, television stations locally and globally interested in African cinema and TV stations that want to buy foreign content.

“The content market will bring together investors and investment companies that are interested in the country,” she said.

She said AFRIFF also planned to introduce a technology focused component with the inclusion of artificial intelligence companies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AFRIFF to establish AFCM.

The MoU, which was signed on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, marked a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to transform its creative economy into a vehicle for international engagement and tourism development.

The market is expected to debut at AFRIFF 2025. (NAN)

Director-General of Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC), Aisha Augie, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s leading position in cultural diplomacy on the African continent.

This, she said, was even as the country geared up for the golden jubilee of one of its most historic cultural events—FESTAC.

Augie, while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday after a closed-door session with the Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism, emphasised Nigeria’s enduring legacy in promoting African culture globally.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism is chaired by Sen. Ogoshi Onawo (PDP-Nasarawa).

Augie described Nigeria’s cultural impact as ‘unmatched’, citing the FESTAC ’77 as a landmark event that placed the country at the centre of Africa’s cultural revival.

According to her, the FESTAC at 50, slated for 2027, offers another opportunity to showcase the richness of African heritage.

The director-general, who stated that FESTAC ’77 laid the foundation for cultural unity and cooperation across the continent, said that preparations for the anniversary were already underway.

“As we approach 50 years since that historic gathering, we must build on the legacy,” she said.

Augie also noted the significant infrastructure and policy milestones that accompanied the festival, many of which, she said, had continued to serve as cultural landmarks in Nigeria.

“From the National Theatre in Lagos to FESTAC Town, the legacy of that moment endures,” she added.

The director-general said that the committee acknowledged the importance of adequately funding cultural institutions in order to harness Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

“The senate assured us that cultural bodies like CBAAC will receive the budgetary backing needed to carry out their mandates,” she said. (NAN)

Sen. Ned Nwoko has been honoured in Abuja as Cultural Ambassador by the National Commission for Museum and Monuments (NCMM).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recognition is in honour of Nwoko’s steadfast commitment to preserving Nigeria’s cultural identity, promoting unity, and advancing cultural diplomacy both at home and abroad.

The senator, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, in his remarks during the event noted that cultural identity was the soul of every nation.

“I am deeply honoured to be named Cultural Ambassador by the NCMM, in recognition of my contributions to preserving Nigeria’s heritage.

“As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, I have been at the forefront of efforts to ensure the return of looted Nigerian artifacts from foreign institutions.

“My advocacy reflects a deep understanding of the importance of cultural restitution in healing historical wounds and rebuilding national pride.

“From my efforts at Mount Ned, a cultural and historical hub in Delta that now serves as a living archive of Nigerian art, history, and tourism potential, to my legislative advocacy in the Senate, I have remained committed to championing our heritage and supporting the creative sector as a vehicle for national rebirth,” he said.

He stressed that culture must not be seen as a relic of the past, but as a dynamic force in shaping the nation’s future.

“This award is a reminder that culture is not a relic of the past; it is our tool for shaping the future. I thank the NCMM for this recognition and reaffirm my dedication to promoting the best of who we are as a people,” Nwoko added.

Earlier the NCMM described the lawmaker as a visionary, whose work continues to inspire a deeper appreciation for Nigeria’s rich cultural landscape and heritage assets.

In another development, the lawmaker received a delegation from the African Diasporan Union, who visited him to formally present a bill seeking to grant Nigerian citizenship to Afro-descendants who have traced their ancestral roots to Nigeria.

He assured them of his support, while noting the importance of aligning such proposals with the nation’s constitutional and legal processes.

“As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, I believe my office must serve the people meaningfully.

“In a related effort, I have also presented a bill for Nigerians in diaspora to be able to vote. The bill is now under deliberation in the senate,” Nwoko added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Commission urges NASS on adequate funding of culture, creative sector

Commission urges NASS on adequate funding of culture, creative sector

By Joshua Olomu

Mr Olugbile Holloway, Director-General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), has urged the National Assembly (NASS) to ensure improved funding for the culture and creative sector.

Holloway made the call at an event organised by the commission to celebrate the 2025 International Museum Day (IMD) at the Chinese Cultural Centre on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said this would enable the sector contribute more to national economic growth.

According to him, as Nigeria seeks to diversify its revenue mainstay from oil, the culture and creative sector presents itself as a veritable option, if adequate attention was given to it.

He said President Bola Tinubu saw the sector as a viable source to significantly grow the economy and cause a paradigm shift from dependence on oil, and gave it a stand-alone ministry.

The NCMM helmsman, however, noted that adequate funding was needed to reposition the sector and harness the vast opportunities it offers for job creation, tourism growth and increased contribution to GDP.

He therefore urged the NASS, especially its committees on the sector, to prioritise its funding to boost the sector’s expansion for job creation and economic growth.

The NCMM helmsman added that the commission was presently working towards revamping museums across the country.

He however added that because of the huge funding required for the projects, the commission was seeking public-private partnerships for the projects.

“The sector has vast opportunities to turn-around our economy, and our Museums as critical cultural assets need adequate funding.

“At the NCMM, we have competent officers and workforce who only needed to be given the necessary support.

“I am using this opportunity to appeal to the National Assembly to pay more attention to this sector and allocate more funds.

“For the museum and heritage sector to thrive and remain relevant in today’s dynamic environment there must be significant investment.

“In line with the theme of the day, the commission is embracing technology and new media as strategic tools for cultural promotion”, he said.

According to him, the nation has rich cultural and historic heritages, as well as artifacts which need to be showcased to the world to make Nigeria a choice tourist destination.

He said that museum space is a very good opportunity to boost tourism by showcasing Nigeria’s cultural heritage because people all over the world are very interested in Nigerian culture.

The DG said the commission was utilising digital platforms to showcase collections of heritage stories, including the creative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on public billboards across major Nigerian cities, particularly in Lagos.

In his speech,Gabriel Zock, Chairman House Committee on Culture and Tourism, lauded NCMM for championing reforms in the culture and tourism sectors.

The member representing Kachia/Kagarko Federal Constituency said the nation’s culture and tourism sector has suffered neglect over the years, and needed major reforms to add meaningfully to national economy.

“The reason why we are here today is to celebrate culture, and to celebrate what God has blessed us with, and it shows that culture is very important.

It is amazing that today when we travel to the rest of the world, the first thing we want to do is to visit their cultural heritage, and we must showcase our own

“As a committee, we are drawing a plan on how to work with the agencies and support them to have good funding.

“I have promises the NCMM and other agencies under my watch that whatever they need to succeed , we the committee members will make sure we get it done.

“We will work with the budget office, the Ministry of Finance, and with other appropriations offices to make sure that this agencies get what they need”, he said.

Earlier in her keynote address, Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, said the ministry was committed to revamping museums across the country

The minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, said preserving and promoting Nigerian’s rich cultural heritage to the world was a priority of the ministry.

“As we navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world, it will interest us to know that museums are poised to play pivotal roles in shaping our collective future.

“In an era marked by technological advancements, cultural, demographic shifts, and societal evolution, museums must adapt to remain relevant and impactful.

“Museums should also come in handy in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change, social justice, and cultural heritage preservation, and also foster community partnerships collaborations, and co-creation.

“Using them as platforms for marginalised voices, promoting empathy, understanding, preserving and showcasing our cultural heritage should be born in our minds while also addressing contemporary challenges.

“It is imperative to note that as the world is rapidly revolving, so is our museum, therefore, museums should not be seen as static walls, but about open doors, not about holding ons; but about reaching out to diverse communities”, she said.

NAN reports that International Museum Day, coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), is held annually on May 18.

It provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet the public and alert them as to the challenges that museums face, and raise public awareness on the role museums play in the development of society.

It also promotes dialogue between museum professionals and highlights a specific theme which changes every year reflecting a relevant theme or issue facing museums internationally.

“This year’s theme is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”.(NAN) (nannews.ng)
