Mr Olugbile Holloway, Director-General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), has urged the National Assembly (NASS) to ensure improved funding for the culture and creative sector.

Holloway made the call at an event organised by the commission to celebrate the 2025 International Museum Day (IMD) at the Chinese Cultural Centre on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said this would enable the sector contribute more to national economic growth.

According to him, as Nigeria seeks to diversify its revenue mainstay from oil, the culture and creative sector presents itself as a veritable option, if adequate attention was given to it.

He said President Bola Tinubu saw the sector as a viable source to significantly grow the economy and cause a paradigm shift from dependence on oil, and gave it a stand-alone ministry.

The NCMM helmsman, however, noted that adequate funding was needed to reposition the sector and harness the vast opportunities it offers for job creation, tourism growth and increased contribution to GDP.

He therefore urged the NASS, especially its committees on the sector, to prioritise its funding to boost the sector’s expansion for job creation and economic growth.

The NCMM helmsman added that the commission was presently working towards revamping museums across the country.

He however added that because of the huge funding required for the projects, the commission was seeking public-private partnerships for the projects.

“The sector has vast opportunities to turn-around our economy, and our Museums as critical cultural assets need adequate funding.

“At the NCMM, we have competent officers and workforce who only needed to be given the necessary support.

“I am using this opportunity to appeal to the National Assembly to pay more attention to this sector and allocate more funds.

“For the museum and heritage sector to thrive and remain relevant in today’s dynamic environment there must be significant investment.

“In line with the theme of the day, the commission is embracing technology and new media as strategic tools for cultural promotion”, he said.

According to him, the nation has rich cultural and historic heritages, as well as artifacts which need to be showcased to the world to make Nigeria a choice tourist destination.

He said that museum space is a very good opportunity to boost tourism by showcasing Nigeria’s cultural heritage because people all over the world are very interested in Nigerian culture.

The DG said the commission was utilising digital platforms to showcase collections of heritage stories, including the creative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on public billboards across major Nigerian cities, particularly in Lagos.

In his speech,Gabriel Zock, Chairman House Committee on Culture and Tourism, lauded NCMM for championing reforms in the culture and tourism sectors.

The member representing Kachia/Kagarko Federal Constituency said the nation’s culture and tourism sector has suffered neglect over the years, and needed major reforms to add meaningfully to national economy.

“The reason why we are here today is to celebrate culture, and to celebrate what God has blessed us with, and it shows that culture is very important.

It is amazing that today when we travel to the rest of the world, the first thing we want to do is to visit their cultural heritage, and we must showcase our own

“As a committee, we are drawing a plan on how to work with the agencies and support them to have good funding.

“I have promises the NCMM and other agencies under my watch that whatever they need to succeed , we the committee members will make sure we get it done.

“We will work with the budget office, the Ministry of Finance, and with other appropriations offices to make sure that this agencies get what they need”, he said.

Earlier in her keynote address, Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, said the ministry was committed to revamping museums across the country

The minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, said preserving and promoting Nigerian’s rich cultural heritage to the world was a priority of the ministry.

“As we navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world, it will interest us to know that museums are poised to play pivotal roles in shaping our collective future.

“In an era marked by technological advancements, cultural, demographic shifts, and societal evolution, museums must adapt to remain relevant and impactful.

“Museums should also come in handy in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change, social justice, and cultural heritage preservation, and also foster community partnerships collaborations, and co-creation.

“Using them as platforms for marginalised voices, promoting empathy, understanding, preserving and showcasing our cultural heritage should be born in our minds while also addressing contemporary challenges.

“It is imperative to note that as the world is rapidly revolving, so is our museum, therefore, museums should not be seen as static walls, but about open doors, not about holding ons; but about reaching out to diverse communities”, she said.

NAN reports that International Museum Day, coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), is held annually on May 18.

It provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet the public and alert them as to the challenges that museums face, and raise public awareness on the role museums play in the development of society.

It also promotes dialogue between museum professionals and highlights a specific theme which changes every year reflecting a relevant theme or issue facing museums internationally.

“This year’s theme is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”.(NAN) (nannews.ng)

An exhibition showcasing a rare collection of currencies has opened at the Cornelius Adepegba Museum of African Art, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exhibition tagged “An Exhibition of Dele T. Fawole Numismatic Collection” showcased works of over 30 decades.

NAN reports that the collection, owned by exhibitor Dele Fawole, features currencies from various countries, including historic notes and coins that reflect economic transitions such as redenominations and devaluations.

Fawole said the exhibition was borne from a private passion for collecting currencies during his travels, with over 80 per cent of the items collected personally.

He stated that the idea to publicly exhibit the collection came from Prof. Ohioma Pogoson, Honorary Curator of the Museum.

“When people visit any household, you know, you give them photographic albums.

“So, I used to give them my albums of my various currency notes.

“It was Prof. Pogoson who suggested that it deserved a public showing, and we eventually decided to make it happen,” he said.

Fawole credited the Institute for supporting the exhibition, which he described as a successful outcome of a long-considered idea, a collection of over 30 years.

Also, Pogoson said that putting the exhibition together was a novel experience, being his first time curating a display of flat but three-dimensional materials.

According to him, despite challenges including funding and display logistics, he said the result had been rewarding.

He emphasised that the exhibition goes beyond economics, noting that currencies also embody art, culture and history.

Pogoson said that many of the designs on currencies are created by artists and reflect national identity and aesthetics.

The curator added that the exhibition has educational value, especially for younger audiences and students.

“Many of whom had never seen some of the featured currencies such as high-value Zimbabwean notes or Biafran currency from the Nigerian civil war era.

Director of the Institute, Prof. Sola Olorunyomi, described the exhibition as a multidisciplinary showcase, attracting attention from political scientists, artists, architects and students.

He said the display resonated with the Institute’s core mandate by blending history, politics, art and education in one experience.

Olorunyomi expressed satisfaction with the audience reception, noting that the most viewed items were the 50 billion Zimbabweans note and the Biafran currency—symbols of significant economic and political history.

He commended the curator’s effort and the coincidence of the exhibition’s timing with the resumption of students, which, he said, had helped fire the imagination of the academic community.

Olorunyomi also revealed that the exhibition marks the launch of a new salon space within the museum, enhancing the Institute’s capacity to engage with the public and promote African studies through innovative displays.

Also, a Professor at the Institute of African Studies, Senayon Olaoluwa, lauded the dynamism of the exhibition at the institute from bronze to metal works, to numismatic collection with Industrial Arts Exhibition to follow.

Dr Olusegun Abatan, Secretary, Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Oyo State, has lamented the demonisation of African traditions, calling for the return of traditional methods in solving complex issues.

Abatan, in a news conference held at the Pensioners’ House, Agbarigo, in Ibadan on Friday, said it was high time the Yoruba revived their culture and traditions with pride.

He bemoaned the double standards exhibited by foreign cultures that secretly practice what they label as ‘backward’ in Africa.

Likewise, he criticised the religious hypocrisy that ridiculed traditional beliefs publicly but secretly sought help from traditionalists, thus affirming the potency of traditional medicine and spirituality.

Condemning the rising insecurity in Yorubaland, Abatan called on traditionalists to spiritually confront kidnappers and bandits by invoking the spirit of Egungun to protect the people.

The pensioners’ scribe clamoured for the return to native policing methods and traditional solutions to complex issues like infertility, epilepsy and community security.

These traditional methods and solutions, he said, had proven effective over generations.

Abatan, therefore, appreciated Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for initiating the World Egungun Festival, celebrated on Thursday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan.

According to him, the governor deserves praise for recognising traditional values alongside Christianity and Islam in official government functions.

While also commending the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, for his efforts in organising the festival, he urged other governors to emulate Makinde’s cultural inclusiveness and support. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The famous Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, will on June 29, lead a cast of artists and storytellers in Chinua Achebe’s inaugural edition of the ‘Things Fall Apart Festival’ in Enugu.

The organisers of the festival, Centre for Memories (CFM), Enugu, disclosed this on Thursday.

CFM’s Executive Director, Mazi Iheanyi Igboko, said that the event was a bold attempt to expand the annual Things Fall Apart Day.

He said Adichie would also deliver the keynote address from the festival theme: “Masculine, Feminine, Human – The Dialogue of Complements in Things Fall Apart.”

“Adichie who has been on a globe-trot, promoting “Dream Count” her highly anticipated new novel after a decade-long hiatus, returns home to honour the memory of one of her greatest literary influences.

“She will explore the “Achebean inheritance”, a powerful reflection on storytelling, cultural rootedness, and the timeless dialogue between history and identity,” Igboko said.

He said that the festival would critically look at the harmony and tension between gender ideals in Achebe’s work, anchoring it on contemporary conversations on identity, humanity, and cultural balance.

According to him, the week-long cultural immersion is designed to honour Achebe’s legacy through art, performance, technology and scholarship with a re-imagination and recreation of the Umuofia village experience.

“It will also present dramatic performances and staged readings, saloon conversations with cultural thought leaders and immersive tech installations.

“The festival will further feature art exhibition, an essay competition for students in senior secondary and tertiary institutions and the general public; film screenings and guided memory walks.

“There will be a special appearance by the leading actors in the major adaptation of Things Fall Apart into a television series in 1987 in which the Nollywood icon, Pete Edochie starred as Okonkwo,” he said.

The executive director said that iconic Ajofia masquerades, which played a prominent role in the book, would also make a grand entry into the re-imagined Umuofia village at the festival.

Igboko said that the festival would hold from June 29 to July 5 at CFM premise at Independence Layout, Enugu.

He called on schools, creatives, literary societies, corporate organisations, businesses, traditional institutions, and the general public to join in celebration. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, says the ministry will contribute $100 billion to the Nigerian economy by 2030.

Musawa said this while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of sixth the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting of the year.

She said a memo seeking to monetise Nigeria’s tangible and intangible assets in both the creative, cultural and the tourism industry was approved by FEC.

She said this would enable her ministry create a new revenue stream that had never been done before, using the country’s assets to grow the economy.

“Our ministry has committed to contributing and growing the economy by $100 billion by 2030, and we hope to do that by putting all the modalities in place that will allow the industry to grow organically on its own.

“We also want to address unemployment by creating jobs. We are going to create at least two million jobs by 2027 within this industry,” said Musawa.

She said the ministry had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Moby, an international museum collection agency, to monetise the country’s artifacts, historical monuments and landmarks.

“So, the strategy for this monetisation is going to take four separate processes. We’ve already finished that specific process. Now, it is for us and Moby to sit down to now monetise them.

“It is an exciting time for Nigerian identity, for our traditions, for our culture, whereby we use what we have to expand in a way that does not put more pressure on us economically,” said Musawa. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s growing recognition of culture as a vital pillar of national identity, unity and international diplomacy.

A statement signed by the Media Assistant to the Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Mr Caleb Nor, quoted the traditional ruler as giving the commendation during a media conference organised by NICO to herald the upcoming World Orisha Congress (WOOCON).

The Ooni, who is also the Global Patron of WOOCON, said that President Tinubu was creating a culturally-friendly environment, and giving formal recognition to traditional heritage and spiritual institutions across the nation.

“We are grateful that this administration is giving rightful recognition to our culture.

“Culture is the soul of a people. Without it we have no identity.

“President Tinubu’s leadership is not only helping to reposition our cultural values on the global stage but bring us back to the very essence of our existence,” he said.

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka also praised Tinubu for encouraging and supporting the initiative, adding that it was a step to greatness and global boost in tourism revenue and relevance nationalities.

Soyinka, who is a Patron of WOOCON, said culture defined people and nationalities, and intellectual and spiritual engagement were important in reviving the African culture.

Earlier, the Brazilian Consular in Lagos, Ambassador Manuel de Lacerda Santos, highlighted the spiritual connections between Brazil and Nigeria, particularly through the shared Yoruba heritage that continues to thrive across both nations.

Also, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NICO, Mr Abiodun Ajiboye, emphasised the global cultural renaissance currently taking place and the crucial role Nigeria must play in the unfolding narrative.

Ajiboye, who is the Secretary of the WOOCON Board of Trustees, said the initiative is going to be one of the global cultural festivals that will reposition Nigeria as a major tourism destination in the world.

He added that by exploring new opportunities in cultural and spiritual tourism, it could generate over $10 billion annually for Nigeria in the next three years, if well planned.

“WOOCON is not just a congress. It’s a movement to reclaim and redefine African cultural consciousness and identity.

“Nigeria’s decision to collaborate with Brazil in the area of culture, tradition and heritage is informed by the deep historical and cultural connections that exist between the two nations.

“These cultural similarities are specifically profound and undeniable in the area of Yoruba heritage where thousands of Brazilians have over the years visited Nigeria to participate in major cultural and religious festivals such as Osun Oshogbo Festival and Sango Festival, to mention a few.

“These interactions reaffirm the strong ancestral ties between our people and highlight the need for structured engagements that will solidify these bonds,” he said.

Ajiboye noted that other countries in the Caribbeans were also part of the initiative.

A renowned Yoruba scholar, Prof. Wande Abimbola, said the Orisha tradition was a global spiritual system that must be preserved and respected across continents.

NAN reports that WOOCON’s full programme of cultural and intellectual engagements is expected to continue in the months ahead, with Nigeria positioned at the heart of the global movement. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
