The Economic Monitoring Alliance, a Non-Governmental Organisation, has described the recently inaugurated secured communication network for the Armed Forces code-named ‘GIWA 2 Project’ as a boost to Nigeria’s security and economy.
The GIWA 2 Project is designed to provide secure means of communications, real time instant reporting as well as information exchange between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies.
It is expected to bring about enhanced collaboration between intelligence and entire security community.
The group gave the commendation in a statement by its Chairman, Mr Bola Adegoke, on Sunday in Abuja.
Adegoke said the group joined President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPCL) Limited Communication team to commend the Armed forces of Nigeria under the leadership of Gen. Lucky Irabor for such innovation.
According to him, an improved and secured communication system will enhance ongoing operations of the military and other security agencies, thereby making it safer for economic activities to thrive.
He attributed the strength of the military in advanced countries to secured communication network.
“We commend the GIWA 2 Project as it is one of the several initiatives of the Gen. Irabor led armed forces aimed at deepening collaboration in tackling the security challenges in the country.
“Our study show that the effectiveness seen in the military and security agencies of the advanced countries have secured communication network as one of the factors responsible.
“We salute the CDS and his team for this noble objective which will enhance security for our farmers and give a boost to other economic activities,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Nigerian Navy (NN) has raised concern over the proliferation of fake maritime security outfits using uniforms and accoutrements semblance of the navy in the South-South.
The Director of Information, NN, Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, in a statement in Abuja, described the outfits as fake and illegal.
Ayo-Vaughan said the impostors and self-acclaimed maritime security outfits made use of naval uniforms and accoutrements to deceive, harass, intimidate and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
He said that some of the outfits would go as far as selling recruitment forms to the public and even conduct secret recruitment exercises and training.
According to him, the activities of those impostors and miscreants are on the rise, notwithstanding the proscription order of the Federal Government official Gazette No. 58 Vol 100 titled “the Dissolution and Proscription of Certain Associations Order, 2013” banning all such firms/outfits.
“The Order in Paragraph 2 states that ‘As from the commencement of this Order, the dissolved and proscribed associations shall not be formed into any new associations by whatever name or title, within the meaning of this Order.
“Suffice to state that the NN in the past, had arrested and handed over for prosecution, members of some of these outlawed organisations.
“Nevertheless, their illegal activities have continued unabated in some parts of the country, particularly the South-South geopolitical zone.”
Naval spokesperson said some proscribed maritime outfits operating illegally in the nation were Nigerian Merchant Navy, Nigerian Merchant Navy Coastal Defence Force and Nigerian Coast Guard, Merchant Navy Maritime Academy.
Others, according to him, are the Nigerian Merchant Navy Coast Guard Security and Safety Corps, Maritime Security Agency as well as Nigerian Maritime Law Enforcement Agency, amongst others.
He said the proliferation of the illegal outfits was worrisome and might worsen the scourge of insecurity in the country with likely grave impact on national security.
Ayo-Vaughan said it had become necessary to notify the public and appeal for caution, urging public to forward information about the impostors and illegal outfits to the navy to facilitate their arrest.
He said the naval operatives, in conjunction with other maritime law enforcement agencies, would continue to maintain vigilance with a view to locating, apprehending and prosecuting them in accordance with the laws of the land.
“Members of the public are thus enjoined to report any suspected impostor or fake maritime security personnel to the nearest police station and/or naval base.
“In addition, members of the public are advised not to patronise or purchase entry/recruitment forms from these proscribed outfits.
“Report suspicious behaviour of any group of persons or organisations who claim to be personnel of the NN or who are found dressed in or in possession of naval uniforms and accoutrements or similar uniforms and accoutrements, including those conducting fake recruitment and naval training.
“The Nigerian Navy does not sell entry/recruitment forms to the public as is the practice of some of these fraudsters.
“Hence, anyone selling recruitment forms is not a naval personnel but an impostor.
“The perpetrators of these illegalities are warned that the Nigerian Navy as statutorily empowered, will leave no stone unturned in her bid to secure the maritime environment for enhanced security of lives and properties.”
It will also secure the conduct of legitimate maritime commerce as well as related economic activities in the territorial waters. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force are collaborating to rebuild 25 Barracks and facilities that have become dilapidated in the state.
The Force Spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this on Wednesday in Lagos, while briefing newsmen on the project.
Adejobi said that the project of giving officers and men befitting accommodation, an initiative of the I-GP Usman Baba, had started in some states, where some houses had since been inaugurated.
He said other states in the federation would also have similar projects carried out either by current I-GP or new ones coming.
The force spokesperson said that the Barracks affected in Lagos included Adekunle, Agege, Alausa, Area F, Bar-Beach, Bourdillon, Falomo, Federal Highway Patrol, MTX Highway and Ijeh Police Barracks.
Others are Ijora, SQ MTX Ijora, SQ MTX Iponri, K 9 police Barracks, Kam Salem, SQ MTX McCarthy, Mopol 2 Keffi, Mounted Troops, Obalende Barracks, Police Officers’ Mess Obalende and Women Barracks amongst others.
Adejobi said that officers and men living in the affected barracks listed were requested to vacate their quarters within the next 30 days, starting from Monday May 1, to pave way for seamless demolition and redevelopment of the buildings .
He said there would be census of the residents in barracks, to ascertain genuine officers living in those facilities, stressing that they will be given money to secure accommodation for two years, which the project was expected to last.
Adejobi said that officers would not be asked to vacate their apartments until money was paid to them for new accommodation.
“We have not forced any one out of the barracks. They are expected to move out between May 1 and 30th. They will not be asked to move until their money is paid for a new accommodation,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that I-GP Usman Baba gave marching orders for the evacuation of officers and men in dilapidated structures in Lagos, after the recent collapse of a building at Sango Police Barracks, Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a signal dated April 26 to Zonal and State Police Commands, the I-GP said the barracks rehabilitation became necessary in view of the danger the structures posed to the officers and men.
Baba said the order was to forestall further occurrence of police building collapse and prevent loss of lives and property of police personnel in the barracks.
Proposed new structure for police barracks in Lagos
The Lagos State Government, represented by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Housing, Mrs Oritoke Benson, said some police barracks in Lagos have been “crying” for attention for too long, stressing that the state government decided to approach the Force Headquarters for collaboration in rehabilitating the barracks and facilities.
Benson noted that for many years, there have been yearnings for the reformation of the Force and better welfare for the personnel; adding that she wondered where the welfare should begin if not from a befitting accommodation.
She pointed out that some of the buildings in the Barracks had been marked for demolition by the Lagos State Government officials, as most of the buildings were no longer safe for habitation.
“We looked at various police barracks in Lagos State, we wondered if officers and men actually come out of those buildings. This could affect how they address or respond to citizens in the cause of their duties.
“Some are coming out from buildings that are collapsing. When such officers see people in air conditioned cars, there may be anger that they have been neglected by the state.
“I am glad that the State and Federal Government are yielding to the call for the reform. The police in Lagos and other states deserve better accommodation, better schools for their children, better amenities,” she noted.
Benson said that the state would facilitate all the building plans and approval, assuring that the best structures would be built to avoid building collapse in police barracks in future. (NAN) www.nannews.ng
