The Defence Headquarters says the Air Component of Operation Lafiya Dole has eliminated scores of Boko Haram terrorists in an air strike on Jakana axis of Borno on Wednesday.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, in a statement on Friday, said that some terrorists’ logistics and facilities were destroyed during the air raids.

Enenche said the air interdictions were executed after intelligence reports revealed that the terrorists were conducting another logistics movement through the Jakana-Mainok axis of the state.

He said that a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft dispatched to the area subsequently spotted the terrorists’ vehicles at a location.

According to him, the Air Task Force scrambled NAF helicopter gunships to engage the convoy in successive waves of attack, delivering accurate hits in the target area which resulted in the destruction of two terrorists’ vehicles.

“Several of the terrorists were also eliminated while one of the logistics vehicles was seen overturned.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will not relent until all enemies of the nation are neutralised and normalcy is restored to all troubled zones of the country,” he said. (NAN)

The Presidency has listed the achievements of the military in the on-going fight against insurgency and violent crimes as Nigeria marks the Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Jan. 15.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Jan. 15 every year is commemorated as Armed Forces Remembrance Day to mark the end of the country’s 30-month civil war which ended on Jan. 15, 1970.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, listed the achievements in a special write up tagged: “Security Checklist: as Nigeria marks Armed Forces Remembrance Day”, which was made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

According to Adesina, as the milestone is marked this year, it also provides opportunity to chronicle current landmark achievements by the military in tackling security challenges across the country.

Adesina listed the achievements as:

INTERNAL SECURITY:

Boko Haram is much weaker today than in 2015 as attested to by the Governor of Borno on Dec. 6, 2020 when he said:

“From state-wide statistics on affairs in the 27 Local Government Areas since 2011, the fact is that in spite of recent happenings, the security situation in Borno State and indeed that of the entire North East sub-region is still far better under Buhari, and this is based on records.

“For instance, unlike the years before Buhari when a number of local governments were no-go-areas, we now have indigenes safely back to Gwoza, Askira-Uba, Dikwa, Ngala, Monguno, Kukawa, Damboa, Konduga, Mafa and led by our traditional leaders, which no one could have visited not to talk of living there.

“Our Emirs were all in exile. Today, Bama is coming back to life and so is Askira-Uba, Damboa, Gwoza and others. Life is even returning to Baga. This was impossible before Buhari.

“In fact, it was not possible to move few kilometres out of Maiduguri. Insurgents were so bold to attack and take over military facilities, like the Army Barracks at Monguno, Bama, Giwa Barrack and Multinational Joint Task Force Headquarters at Baga, to mention just a few.

“There were daily bomb blast in many parts of Maiduguri, the most populated part of the state, but all these have stopped under President Buhari. These are the records and no one can dispute them.”

Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole on Tuesday eliminated scores of Boko Haram terrorists and destroyed three of the terrorists’ gun trucks in an air raid at Mainok in Borno, Defence Headquarters says.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Enenche said the air operation was executed sequel to intelligence reports which indicated that the terrorists were traversing the Jakana-Mainok axis of the state in several gun trucks.

He said the Air Task Force scrambled the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter gunships to engage the convoy of the terrorists’ gun trucks and logistics vehicles.

According to him, the helicopters delivered accurate hits in the target area, resulting in the destruction of three of the vehicles, some of which were seen engulfed in flames.

“Several of the terrorists were also eliminated in the process.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will not relent until all enemies of the nation are neutralised and normalcy is restored to all troubled zones of the country,” he said. (NAN)

Correctional Service to train inmates on garment, shoe making

The Controller General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Mr Ja’afaru Ahmed, says the service is set to train inmates on shoes, garments and leather works.

Mr. Chuks Njoku, spokesman of the  Service, said this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeira (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the Controller General said at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by NCoS with a private entrepreneur that the training would be on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

He said the first phase of the engagement would be the shoe and garment factory at Aba Custodial Centre and the Leather Factory at Janguza Custodial Centre, Kano State.

Ahmed said the benefit of the arrangement included skills acquisition by the inmates, which would enhance their employability when they are discharged.

“It will also increase the internally generated revenue of the Service and enhance self-sustainability in the provision of staff uniforms and foot wears as well as inmates’ uniforms and beddings,” he said.

Ahmed used the opportunity to solicit the support and patronage of members of the public of the goods produced by inmates in order to create a sense of self-worth in the offenders.

NAN reports that President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 gave a directive that all military and para-military agencies should resort to purely local sourcing of their uniforms and foot wears.

This laudable initiative was borne out of the need to generate employment for Nigerians, conserve foreign exchange, utilise local raw materials and generate other value added services in the chain of production. (NAN)

NAPTIP hands over 22 under-age children to Kaduna govt.

By Salisu Sani-Idris
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has handed over 22 under-aged children to the Kaduna State Ministry of Human Science and Social Development to be united with their parents.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Director-General of NAPTIP, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim on Wednesday in Abuja.

Suleiman-Ibrahim has frowned at the increasing rate of child trafficking, employment of children for begging and other exploitative labour in the country.

Suleiman-Ibrahim said that the children were rescued by the military, which intercepted a Peugeot J5, on Jan. 8, conveying them.

She explained that they were being taken from Kwasalo village in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State to Nasarawa State for exploitative labour

Suleiman-Ibrahim further explained that the military handed them over to NAPTIP.

The director-general said that the children were cramped into the bus without windows and were weak at the point of rescue.

The NAPTIP boss said that investigation into the case was ongoing but owing to the age of the children, the agency deemed it necessary to re-unite them with their families through the Kaduna State Government.

“This is important to ensure that the children are available in furtherance of investigation and possible prosecution of their traffickers.

“The driver of the bus is in custody as efforts are being expedited to ensure the arrest of other accomplices implicated in the case,’’ she said.

Suleiman-Ibrahim cautioned parents against giving out their children under any guise as they could be subjected to all forms of abuses and exploitation.

She also advised them to desist from abusing their children as perpetrators would be severely punished.

The director-general called on state governments to device effective strategies in dealing with child trafficking as it impacts negatively on them.

She thanked the military for what she described as highly professional conduct in the interception of the children and handing them over to the agency for appropriate actions.

“I appreciate the existing collaboration between the two institutions.

“We also thank the Kaduna State Government for the prompt response and demonstration of love to its people by coming to the rescue of these children.

“This type of collaboration should be emulated by other states to rid the country of the crime of trafficking in persons,’’ Sulaiman-Ibrahim said.

Responding, Mr Usman Hassan, an official of the Kaduna state ministry of human science and social development, assured that efforts would be made to re-unite the children with their parents.

Hassan promised that all those connected with the trafficking of the victims would be prosecuted in line with the existing law of the state.
