I-G extends tinted glass permit enforcement to Oct. 2

By Monday Ijeh
The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has approved further extension of ‘’grace period’’ for the enforcement of tinted glass permit to Oct. 2.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.
He said the approval followed a significant surge in applications via the official portal, reflecting heightened public compliance with the directive.
Adejobi said that the idea was to allow sufficient time for the meticulous scrutiny of applications to ensure that the permit was issued only to eligible and qualified individuals.
He added that the extension would also provide room for the continued fine-tuning of verification processes, both digital and physical, to maintain the integrity of the permit system and prevent abuse.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms that the authorised platform for the application remains https://possap.gov.ng and advises citizens to disregard any unofficial channels.
“Members of the public are further encouraged to report all forms of extortion, hidden charges, or unauthorised processing to the appropriate police authorities, including via the dedicated hotline: 09169967000,” he said.
Adejobi commended the public for their cooperation, adding that the Nigeria Police Force would remain committed to balancing public convenience with robust security measures for the safety of all. (NAN)

Panel orders mapping of juvenile correctional facilities nationwide

Panel orders mapping of juvenile correctional facilities nationwide

Mapping

By Ibironke Ariyo

The Independent Investigative Panel on Alleged Corruption, Abuse of Power, Torture, and Other Inhumane Treatment by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has directed a nationwide mapping of juvenile correctional facilities.

The panel also ordered submission of a comprehensive status report to the National Assembly.

Dr Uju Agomoh, Secretary of the panel, stated this on Monday in Abuja during a media interaction on the issues highlighted during the panel’s third public hearing.

Agomoh said that the day’s deliberations focused on the treatment of “illegal persons” in NCoS custody, challenges facing the service in implementing the NCoS Act, 2019, and standing orders.

This, she said, was with emphasis on Section 35 (1) and (3), Section 13 (3b) and (4), and relevant provisions of the standing orders relating to the treatment of children.

Agomoh said that clear directives were issued for a detailed status report on all custodial facilities nationwide, including “Borstal facilities” managed by the NCoS.

“Special instructions were given regarding a facility in Ilorin to determine whether it should be categorised as a hostel or halfway home.

“This is also to ensure that classification of women’s facilities follows the same standard,” she said.

Agomoh added that the panel had also ordered immediate action on water and sanitation issues in affected centres.

On the welfare of young girls in detention, the panel examined NCoS’s relationship with state agencies providing such facilities.

She said that the Panel recommended strategies to improve collaboration, especially since the service now falls under the Concurrent Legislative List.

According to her, the panel directed the NCoS to map all states to identify locations of facilities for young offenders and submit this information promptly to Parliament.

“The day’s sessions also reviewed the informal sector, focusing on the need for proper oversight of facilities not governed by the Community Council, and on ensuring correctional measures are effectively implemented in such places,” she said.

Agomoh said that data management within the NCoS was commended, noting progress supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme under the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This, she said included provision of data equipment and logistical support for Parliament.

She, however, stressed that more work was required, particularly on enforcing Sections 21 and 22 of the NCoS Act on the four types of visits to custodial centres, and Section 23 on designated visiting centres.

She also said that the resources required for these centres must be identified and included in the national budget.

“The panel also flagged the need to reflect staffing requirements for Borstal facilities and other resources in the 2024 budget, as well as the provision of adequate facilities for proper treatment of non-offenders in custody, “she said.

Agomoh said that there was also a call for the collection of statistics on remand homes and on interventions by faith-based institutions, as no such data currently existed.

She added that the panel advocated greater support for diversion programmes, wider use of non-custodial measures, and strengthened oversight mechanisms for continuous improvement.

The secretary said that the discussions were intense and had drawn inputs and solutions from the NCoS, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and the media, with one more participation session scheduled for Tuesday.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Idris seeks establishment of Air Force base in Kebbi

Gov. Idris seeks establishment of Air Force base in Kebbi

By Muhammad Lawal

Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi has appealed to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to establish a base in the state to effectively tackle security challenges bedevilling the area.

He made the plea while receiving the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar on a courtesy visit at Government House, Birnin Kebbi.

The governor said the call became imperative in view of the incursion of Lakurawa bandits from neighbouring countries of Niger and Benin Republics as well as activities of bandits operating from neighbouring Sokoto, Zamfara and Niger States.

He observed that Kebbi has an international airport which can be used to aid the establishment of a NAF base to support the fight against terrorism.

“Kebbi is strategic, because it shares borders with two countries of Niger, and the Benin Republics.

“Before, the state used to be peaceful but with the incursion of Lakurawa bandits from the neighbouring countries, the state began to witness a series of attacks.

“Apart from Lakurawa, other bandits who also come from Zamfara, Sokoto and Niger States carry out series of attacks on our people, after striking, they go back to their hideouts in those neighbouring states, ” he said.

The governor added that considering the gallant efforts of the security operating in the state, his administration had purchased 85 Toyota HILUX and distributed the same to the personnel to ease their job and boost their morale.

Speaking on Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway project, in which Kebbi takes lion share of it, Idris said the state government had procured 20 Toyota HILUX for patrol, to give the site engineers and other workers adequate security to execute the project.

He observed that securing Kebbi was not only for the good of the state alone but also for the security of other neighbouring states as well as the borders linking Nigeria with other neighbouring nations.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the NAF for its complementary role by responding to the state’s requests, especially in rescue missions.

Earlier, the CAS, said ensuring peace in Kebbi was not only vital to the state but to national security in view of its strategic location.

The air force boss said he was in Kebbi to review the operational readiness of personnel in the state and to have first hand information about their operations.

He lauded the security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace in the state and the Northwest region.

While emphasising the importance of security to human existence, Abubakar said meaningful and successful development would not take place in an unsecured environment.

The CAS solicited deeper and effective collaboration with the Kebbi Government to secure the region. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NASS to ease NDA entry for military school graduates

NASS to ease NDA entry for military school graduates

By Mustapha Yauri

The National Assembly has intensified plans to ease the smooth transition of the Military-Focused Schools’ graduates into the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the development is part of strategy to enhance the combat strength of the armed forces.

The four military-focused schools are: the Nigeria Military School Zaria, Kaduna, the Air Force and the Military School Jos, in Plateau.

Others are Air Force Military School (Girls) Jos, Plateau and the Navy Military School Ikot-Ituen, in Akwa Ibom.

Alhaji Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, member, representing Doguwa/Tudun-Wada Federal Constituency, Kano, disclosed this on the sidelines of 67th Passing Out Parade (POP) of the Nigeria Military School (NMS) in Zaria.

Ado-Doguwa said the bill to amend the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) Act had passed second reading.

According to him, the bill seeks among others, the seamless transition of students from the four Nigerian military schools into NDA.

The lawmaker noted that most of the students of the military schools had acquired some of the basic arms handling and military skills, adding that such students should be encouraged to pursue a career in the military.

This, according to him, will enhance the combat strength of the Armed Forces, while assuring that the bill will have an overwhelming support of the national assembly.

NAN reports that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, had restated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to building a well-educated, professionally competent and future-ready army, through strategic investment in education.

The COAS. who was the Reviewing Officer and Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony, was represented by Maj.-Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Kaduna.

Oluyede said there was a window of opportunity for graduands, who intended to pursue a career in the military, to get placement into the NDA.

However, the COAS further explained that the criteria for admission into the NDA were spelt out, stressing that such criteria were applicable to all Nigerians.

He added that the graduating students were encouraged to apply, because they have a better advantage, following the preliminary military training and orientation they obtained at the NMS.

In an interview, Mr Ikenna Madueke, Chairman, Parents and Instructors’ Association, NMS, urged the government to expand budgetary provisions for military training toward accommodating more cadets to bolster the manpower needs of the armed forces.

Madueke reiterated that boys and girls from the military schools received both academic and military training.

He noted that they would become masters in arms and martial arts by the time they graduated from the school.

“As parents, we are looking at ways where these military training in ex-boys can be harnessed, through their integration into NDA, just as the global trend,’’ he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

No helmet, no riding on highways— FRSC warns motorcyclists

No helmet, no riding on highways— FRSC warns motorcyclists

By Muftau Ogunyemi

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Sector Command, has reiterated its commitment to arrest any motorcyclist riding on highways without crash helmets in the state.

Dr Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC State Sector Commander, gave the warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure.

Ibitoye said that the corps had redoubled its efforts to arrest, impound and prosecute any motorcyclist riding on highways without the helmet.

He explained that most of the crashes involving motorcycles without crash helmets usually resulted in fatalities where skulls, limbs and thighs were broken.

“It is good for motorcycle riders to avoid highways completely but when they find themselves there, they should use the crash helmets and not engage in competition with the vehicles, especially heavy vehicles.

“Don’t claim any rights on the way as an exposed road user, please let the vehicle go and have your own life intact.

“There is a sanction for any motorcyclist riding on highways without the use of a helmet.

“The motorcycle will be impounded and fine paid, but that is not the major thing we are preaching. We are preaching the use of the helmet and safety first,” he said.

The commander, therefore, called on traditionalists, religious leaders and titleholders riding motorcycles without crash helmets to desist from such attitudes for their own safety.

“Do not say because you are a titleholder or a religious person, that it is only your turban or cap you must wear.

“No, if you want to entertain your titles don’t go and ride. Please think of your own safety rather than the title you are talking about.

“Crashes do not know religion, it doesn’t know tradition, it doesn’t know titles and when it happens it takes you as human and your body goes for it as a motorcycle rider.

“So, if you must ride, wear your crash helmet and if you don’t want to wear a helmet, please go and board a vehicle or car. Don’t get yourself killed unexpectedly,” Ibitoye said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FRSC Corps Marshal lauds First Lady’s N110m support for crash victims

FRSC Corps Marshal lauds First Lady’s N110m support for crash victims

By Ibironke Ariyo

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has commended the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for her magnanimous donation of N110 million to support victims of road traffic crashes.

The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, made this known in Abuja on Saturday.

Mohammed described the First Lady’s gesture as an act of uncommon compassion and a demonstration of the Renewed Hope Agenda in action.

He noted that it would bring relief, dignity, and renewed confidence to the families of the 22 Kano athletes who tragically lost their lives in a fatal road traffic crash earlier this year.

Speaking on the gesture, the Corps Marshal reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to reducing road traffic crashes to the barest minimum and ensuring that victims receive prompt support.

“This is not just a donation; it is a lifeline. It is a clear message from the Presidency that no Nigerian life is too small to protect, nor family’s pain too insignificant to address.

“This gesture is in line with the Presidency’s commitment to ensuring the realisation of the 5th Pillar of United Nations Decade of Action on Post-Crash Care,”he said.

Similarly, in order to reduce road carnages in Kano State, Gov. Abba Yusuf, had issued an executive order for immediate commencement of full-scale aggressive enforcement on all traffic regulations.

This is especially in compliance with traffic lights within Kano metropolis.

To ensure effective implementation of this order, the governor directed the FRSC and Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) to work in partnership and ensure full compliance with the provisions of the order.

The Governor emphasised that effective synergy, enhanced enforcement, and proactive public education were critical to reducing crash rates and saving lives on Nigerian roads.

To that end, the FRSC Corps Marshal, while reacting to the order, pledged to heed the governor’s directive by deepening inter-agency partnership.

This, he said, also included deploying more road safety personnel to high-risk routes, and intensifying nationwide public enlightenment campaigns.

He also issued a stern warning to all motorists in the state, that any driver caught violating traffic laws, particularly running red lights, would be punished without exception.

The governor added that reckless behaviour would no longer be tolerated.

He called on corporate bodies, state governments, and well-meaning Nigerians to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, noting that road safety is a shared responsibility. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
