The VC also disclosed that 486 academic staff of the institution had begun training for participation as collation and returning officers.

She observed that the senior lecturers were chosen based on experience, integrity, hard work and exposure, commitment and responsiveness to roles and assignment given to them.

“I want to advise my colleagues that we must do our job with all amount of integrity and transparency for the growth of our country.

“The reason why the Independent National Electoral Commission is using lecturers is based on the fact that we have high level of integrity and we must justify this in our conduct.

“We must not allow ourselves to be used to accuse the process. We must refuse to be tempted with money from politicians to buy the process.

“The lecturers must do their work with integrity and protect the corporate image of the university.

“The lecturer must be dedicated and passionate as they do their job on election days,” she said.

She explained that lecturers participation in the electioneering process was a call to “national service’’. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has inaugurated the secretariat of the Postgraduate Students’ Government inside the university’s campus.

While inaugurating the secretariat on Friday in Calabar, Obi commended the leadership of the Postgraduate Students’ Government for building a new secretariat for the student body.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the secretariat “Prof. Florence Obi Postgraduate Students’ Government Secretariat” is named after the Vice Chancellor.

She lauded the postgraduate leadership for exhibiting great courage and resilience in ensuring the completion of the project.

Obi, who described the postgraduate leadership as men and women of integrity, said they have written their names in gold for initiating and ensuring the actualisation of the ‘gigantic project’.

“I will not reject the secretariat being named after me. it’s a great honour for acknowledging my support by naming the building after me,” she said.

Obi commended the postgraduate students for their cooperation during the ‘dark times’ of her administration.

The VC reiterated that her administration would strive hard to achieve academic excellence as well as effective teaching and learning.

She urged the postgraduate executives to emulate the good works and legacies of the former leadership.

She noted that the population of students for regular programmes should be able to make them actualise more massive projects.

The VC advised the new postgraduate executive to engage in constructive discussions, dialogue and policies that would benefit the rest of the students and move the university forward.

She urged them to avoid sabotaging the efforts of the university’s management, just as she warned them against embezzling students’ funds.

Earlier, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Anthony Eyang, commended the Vice Chancellor for the pivotal role she played in ensuring the completion of the project.

Eyang said that the project would not have come to fruition without her directives for the quick release of funds from the student’s development charges.

Also speaking, the former President, Post Graduate Student Government, Mr John Ololo, expressed joy on the inauguration and dedication of the “Prof Florence Obi Postgraduate Government Secretariat” under his watch.

Ololo, who described the VC as “Madam Projects” and “the talk and do” Vice Chancellor, appreciated her for the quick approval of the release of funds, her commitment, as well as her support towards the project.

“Our dear VC, you told us when you were laying the foundation stone that this building will be completed during my administration, it looked like a mirage then, but today, it’s a reality,” he said.

He disclosed that the one-storey building houses five offices at the first floor for the President, Secretary General, Senate President, Chief Judge and General office.

He added that the ground floor has a conference hall for meetings, senate plenary and a cafeteria to serve as another source of income for the union. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Chiazo Ogbolu

Some stakeholders in the maritime industry on Thursday implored teachers to take advantage of the benefits inherent in the blue economy and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA).

They made the call at a one-day free seminar tagged, “Overview of Blue Economy and AFCFTA, Advantages for Teachers” which was held in Lagos.

The experts said that learning about the blue economy could also provide opportunities for side businesses, apart from teaching.

The event organised by Ocean Ambassadors Foundation (OAF) was in commemoration of International Year of Education.

Dr Yinka Ayandele, former Permanent Secretary/Tutor General, Lagos State Ministry of Education, District 111, said that learning about the blue economy could give teachers their another source of living, particularly when they longer teach or no more in active service.

“We should be partakers of this space and so we need to decide where we want to key in and do the needful,” she said.

Mrs Julie Saka, Chief Operations Officer, Nigerian Shippers’Councill (NSC), said the continent needs human capital with better 21st century skills to achieve its goals.

She added that investing in better trained human capital e.g technical vocational education and skills development was critical to the success of AFCFTA.

“It is therefore important that the education sector plans should include economics and entrepreneurship components focused on the appropriate skills needed by enterprises,” she said.

Saka, while speaking on “AFCFTA – Opportunities for Teachers”, urged teachers to form union in West and Central Africa or Union of Teachers in Africa to help them look at the possibility of having unified teaching techniques.

Mrs Funmi Shelika, President AWFishnet Nigeria, advised teachers to know what interest them, research on it, discuss and get a mentor in the line.

Shelika, who spoke on entrepreneurial opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture resources, said that some policies in the country were not helping the fisheries and aquaculture space.

She, therefore, urged the government to look into such policies.

Also, Dr Bashir Jamoh, the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), said opportunities in the blue economy were enormous.

Jamoh highlighted some of the opportunities to include; aquaculture, offshore energy, tourism, fisheries, ship building, seafaring, ship repair and maintenance services, among others.

The director-general, represented by the Director of Internal Audit at NIMASA, Mrs Olamide Odusanya, observed that one of the major threats in the sector was piracy.

He, however, noted that tge piracy had been reduced to the barest minimum since the launch of the Deep Blue Project by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021.

The NIMASA boss encouraged teachers to stimulate young students’ interest in shipping and other ancillary services like insurance, maritime law, freight forwarding, among others.

Speaking on the benefits of the AfCFTA which opens the entire regional market, he opined that blue economy had similar objectives by expanding the ocean market and opportunities.

Dr Emmanuel Audu, Director, Lagos State Agricultural Training Institute, noted that many business opportunities in aquaculture abound for teachers to tap into, listing some as production of fingerlings, table-size fish, fish processing and others.

He noted that unfortunately the blue economy and the natural resources were being polluted and this leading to disasters.

“There is need to take radical steps to bring in more people into the value chain, and we should be conscious of the effect of our activities on the natural resources,” he said.

In his contribution, Mr Tarzan Balogun, Chairman, Tarzan Boats, encouraged the teachers on boat cruise on excursion for their students and assured them of the availability of his boat for the exercise.

Earlier, Mrs Violet Williams, President, OAF, noted that there should be a grassroot approach where the teachers would adopt the AFCFTA network.

William said that the common saying that “teachers rewards is in heaven” should not be accepted.

“That is why we have people to teach you about the business plan for blue economy and AFCFTA. There is untapped opportunities there, a non conventional opportunities for them to explore,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 72 teachers registered online for the seminar. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Registrar, National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, says the council will consider legal actions against candidates involved in examination malpractices.
Wushishi stated this  at an interactive session with newsmen, on the sidelines of the release of result of the 2022 Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE) for external candidates, on Thursday, in Minna.
The council ‘s boss  expressed concern over the sharp increase in  examination  malpractices across the country in its 2022 SSCE (external) with 11,419 cases, as against the 4,454 recorded in 2021.
According to him, this is largely due to the improvement in the strategy and techniques adopted by the monitoring officers, which led to the blacklisting of four supervisors in Rivers, Plateau and Ogun states.
He described collusion among candidates during examinations, as one of the major  factors  responsible for the high malpractices cases, during the conduct of the 2022 SSCE for external candidates.
“Collusion among candidates is one of the key factors responsible for the high number of malpractice cases in this results.
“Collusion is in different forms. Talking during examination, when you exchange paper and pen, which is not allowed, this is called collusion.
“So all these things were identified and also you can  identify collusion while marking the papers, because you could see how candidates scripts are very similar. By the time you have the preponderance of these scripts in this nature, you know that collusion has taken place.
”What we do is that we withheld and cancel results, but we have not started taking legal actions.  But we have resolved through the process of approving this results, to start taking legal actions.
“There are no special tribunal to handle examination malpractices in Nigeria, there are only conventional courts you go to address this.
” When you look at the laws, you will find out there hasn’t been much legal actions that has to do with examination malpractices across the country. But we are going to make sure NECO blaze the trail, to address examination malpractices,” Wushishi said.
The registrar added that there were, however, some improvements in the examination, over the previous one, especially in the number of registered candidates.
“Last year, we registered only a little  above 40,000 candidates, but this year, we registered more than 60, 000 candidates and about 58,000 of such candidates sat for the examination. So, this is an improvement,” he added.
Recall that the council’s 2022  SSCE for external candidates, commenced from  Nov. 21 to Dec. 21, 2022 and released 57 days after its conduct, with 29 subjects examined. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Funmilayo Adeyemi

Glisten International Academy has canvassed for the development and reorientation of children’s mind toward having a positive approach that would lead to nation building.

The Deputy Head, School Administration, Mr James Ali, said this at the school’s annual education fair in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ali said that the education fair was apt as it would help add value to the generality of the people.

“We believe the nation Nigeria can change the world at large, so therefore, we have started the mission of nation building by developing and orientating the minds of the children towards positive and developmental approach.

“We had given them (students) the foundational part of education and we believe education is a lifelong process which starts from childhood and even to adulthood.

“We believe that as soon as they graduate from school, learning is meant to continue, so we select schools across the globe, bring them together and we design the career day for the students to choose their career path,’’ he said.

The deputy head also said that career mentorship given to the students would facilitate the development of value system and self-consciousness of the society.

According to him, when you look at the nation today, a lot need to be done to put the nation at the top of performance worldwide.

“We have every natural resources we can ever think of a nation should have but nothing seems to be working positively for the nation.

“And we need these children to start thinking positively and right so that what we have they can put it to use,” he added.

The Guest Speaker at the occasion, Mrs Olajumoke Ekehinde, said it was important for parents, guardians to help guide the students in chosen their career path rather than be authoritative in their decisions.

Ekehinde, School Administrator, Rangefield Preparatory School, Abuja said parents doesn’t want their children to fail, adding that ”We have a mindset of how we see our children or what we want them to be in future.

“Most times you hear parents say: I want my children to do better than what I did, in doing so a lot of them misguide the children by putting them in that ‘box’ of wanting them to be what they want them to be.

“And I will not blame them entirely as I will say it is the love they have for their children but that is fast reducing presently as we are beginning to understand the dynamics of other career choices.

“And  that all careers are good, all careers have potential and that students can excel in the career they choose and all we need to do is to support them,” she said.

A parent, Mr Michael Mozie, called on parents not to super-impose their wish on their children but create a platform for them to choose their driven career.

“Parent is a guide to a child, so we should help the child to actualise his dream, to follow his passion and we should not impose what we want on our children but rather we should encourage them to take their path,” he said.

An SS3 student of the school, Oluwatosin Obasanya commended the school authority for organising the education fair, saying that it would enable them strategise on focusing on their desired career while transiting to higher education.

“I believe it will give me a lot because transition from SS3 to the university is a new experience and it gives a lot of pressure to do well and make the right decision so this gives a lot of prospect on how we can transit in a better way,” she said.

The event featured presentations from representative institutions and talk show by some students.

In attendance were Africanada Educational Services, Zeta Brent Education Limited, Nile University, Philomath University and Kampus Group, among others.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Naira redesign: NECA advises on way forward

141 total views today

By Esenvosa Izah

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has urged the Federal Government to look beyond the politics of the naira redesign and focus on the damaging effects on businesses and the economy at large.

Its Director-General, Mr Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, made the call in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

‘’In the last few weeks, with the cash squeeze and the purchasing ability of Nigerians greatly impaired by the poor implementation of the policy, the economy has witnessed a significant bashing.

‘’This is so, with report stating that the Real sector witnessed about 40 per cent drop in productive activities.

‘’As the cash crush continues, thousands of productive hours are lost daily on queues by employees and many cannot even get to work.

‘’The value chain in the formal and informal sector with over N10 billion cash transaction daily is almost destroyed with consequences for employment, business sustainability and National development. ” he said.

The director-general called for critical and immediate effort to be made to improve or upgrade alternative routes to cash, thereby ensuring seamless transactions before going digital.

According to him, the series of actions being taken by the CBN now in the form of having Agent Naira Swap, among others, are afterthoughts, after the reality of resistance by Nigerians.

‘’It is callous to deprive citizens of the new naira notes after cajoling them to deposit the old ones in the banks.

‘’We urge the CBN to sanction the commercial banks that have been found to be complicit in the whole show of shame, even as the CBN cannot extricate itself from being complicit.

‘’As an immediate action, we align with the position of the Council of State that the CBN should release more new naira notes into the economy or allow the use of the old ones, pending a time when it will demonstrate competence by not always putting the cart before the horse in the implementation of monetary policies, ” Oyerinde said.

The NECA boss said that the CBN Naira redesign policy with the objectives as stated by the apex bank was laudable.

He said, however, that like many of the bank’s policy initiatives, this was also flawed by improper and shortsightedness in implementation.

‘’For a definitive monetary policy as the naira design, it is expected that the CBN will not only take lessons from other countries like India, Myanmar, Australia, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and the European Union, which witnessed various degrees of successes and failures when they implanted their currency redesign.

‘’However, CBN will also do a thorough analysis and simulation of likely social and economic challenges that might arise and definitive response to those challenges.

‘’Thus far, it does not seem that the CBN understands the challenges, nor have solutions to the economic issues, thereby allowing speculators and economic saboteurs to have a field day at the expense of legitimate businesses and the economy, ” Oyerinde said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
