Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has unveiled Africa’s first feature film on Artificial Intelligence, titled Makemation.

Speaking at the unveiling in Marina, Sanwo-Olu said the AI film, produced by human development expert, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, will make its cinematic debut in Lagos on Friday, April 18.

He praised the producer and cast, assuring creatives of his willingness to collaborate on transformative ideas that project and develop the state’s creative industry.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in essential infrastructure that will enable the creative sector to thrive.

“This production highlights the power of collaboration. We need more partnerships like this. Our role is to enable and create platforms for you to excel.

“This is the most innovative industry. See this government as a partner in shaping the future we all desire,” he said.

Producer Akerele-Ogunsiji said the film explores themes such as STEM education, digital skills, financial literacy, and gender equality.

She noted that Makemation, starring Richard Mofe-Damijo, Tony Umez, Shaffy Bello, Ibrahim Chatta, Toyin Afolayan, and Ali Nuhu, examines the intersection of real life and AI.

The film also explores AI’s transformative power and its impact on the fourth industrial revolution, she explained.

“Viewers will see young people designing bras that detect breast cancer. We must move beyond consuming innovation and start building our own.

“Nigerian films should showcase our indigenous innovations. This film is for the future. Success isn’t reserved for a select few,” she said.

Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, highlighted the government’s efforts to empower creatives over the past six years.

She said the ministry has trained nearly 20,000 young Nigerians in filmmaking, content creation, and other creative fields through strategic partnerships.

Institutions such as EbonyLife Academy, Gidi Creatives, AMA Creative Academy, and Delyork Academy have collaborated on these initiatives, she added.

She stressed that technology is key to the industry’s future, with Lagos positioning itself as a leader in digital innovation.

“Our visit to San Francisco to engage with tech entrepreneur Ghazi Shami was a strategic step toward fostering strong digital partnerships.

“We aim to build a globally competitive workforce ready to dominate the creative economy,” she added.

She noted that the government has provided grants to filmmakers to support high-quality productions capable of competing internationally.

“By investing in local storytelling, we ensure our narratives reach global audiences while creating jobs within the industry,” she said.

Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation, commended Sanwo-Olu’s support for filmmakers.

“As part of the cast, I am excited about this project. The governor’s support is commendable.

“We now need the media’s backing to create buzz around this innovation,” he said.

Microsoft’s Country Manager, Olatomiwa Williams, stressed the need to equip young Nigerians with responsible AI skills.

She advocated for collaborations between tech hubs, government, schools, and private organisations to expand AI education.

“This initiative is inspiring. With government support, we must focus on educating Nigerians on responsible AI use,” she said.

Livespot360 Co-Founder, Oluwadamilare Art Alade, highlighted AI’s role in preserving cultural heritage.

Makemation features Nollywood stars, tech experts, public officials, and social media talents in an unconventional mix.

The four-quadrant family drama blends pop culture, research, and AI into an engaging, high-tension, and comedic masterpiece. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy has called on entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in the creative sector to invest in the development of the Abuja Creative City (ACC).

Musawa made the call at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the ministry and Creative Park Limited on Thursday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the collaborative MoU is aimed at developing the ACC as an entertainment, culture and creative hub and as well create jobs for teeming Nigerian youths.

According to Musawa, who signed on behalf of the Federal Government, the ACC is a visionary project designed to position Nigeria as Africa’s leading hub for innovation, media, culture, and entertainment.

The minister said some of the benefits for investors seeking to take advantage of investing in the creative city project include tax incentives for a specified period.

She said the project is scheduled for five-year completion, adding that there are plans to introduce reduced rates for water, electricity, and other utilities in the setting up of the initial phase of the project.

“This is a great project by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy in support of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“This is conceived to give the young people of Nigeria something that has never happened; bringing economic, cultural tourist expansion in a way Nigeria has never seen.

“It is an ecosystem system where we have the ability to grow the creative industry, and for me, today is a day that I’m extremely proud of, as one of the greatest honours of my life is being a Nigerian.

“For the rest of my life, I will be happy for this day, because I can see the vision and mission of President Bola Tinubu is coming into fruition.

“The president’s vision is not about just building the creative industry; his vision is about empowering future generations.

“I urge our investors and creative entrepreneurs to come and be part of this historic project for sustainable economic development,” she said.

Musawa said the city is designed to be a celebration of Nigeria’s history, showcasing arts, music, film and many more creative expressions while making it Africa’s cultural flagship centre.

According to the minister, the creative city will offer world-class recreational facilities like theatres and cinema with a view to creating more opportunities for Nigerian creative and boost economic activities in Abuja.

She explained that other incentives for investors include the streamlining of business registration, licensing, and operations processes, aimed at making the city an attractive destination for global enterprises.

In his remarks, Mr Bayo Omoboriowo, Managing Director of Creative Park Limited, lauded the minister for her initiative to drive the ACC as a public-private partnership (PPP) project.

He said the creative city, spanning 50 hectares of land, would offer world-class infrastructure, as obtainable in global creative hubs like the NEOM in Saudi Arabia, Dubai Media City, and Techhub in London.

“One thing that dawned on me is that Nigeria is no longer the country that should be taken for granted, for this is the future, and the future is now.

“This initiative goes beyond infrastructure; it is about the Nigerian people, a people who have great potential inside of them, and a people who until now, their hearts and trust have been looted.

“We are now talking about repatriation, and it goes beyond repatriation, we are asking for tomorrow.

“We are creating an ecosystem that can attract people to come here to accelerate their vision, get the funding from both private and public sectors to build the Nigeria we really need.

“We can no longer leave our talents as raw material that we are exporting to the world; it is time for us to produce, to turn ideas to products and products to industry.

“This starts with collaboration, not ambition, when government and the private  sector begin to see that we need collaborations in building this future for creation and uplifting people out of poverty,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

How to avoid fake `cyber-lover` traps—Experts

Tolu Aiyegbusi

Cyber experts on Thursday advised against hurriedly getting into close acquaintances with individuals met on social media platforms, saying it could be fraught with danger.

They said painstaking efforts should be made, using physical contacts and digital tools, to ascertain individual’s background before engaging in a stronger relationship.

The experts gave the advice during interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

NAN reports that the legal framework that ensures safe internet for users is the Cybercrime Prohibition, Prevention, etc Act (2015).

The Act provides an effective, unified and comprehensive legal, regulatory and institutional framework for the prohibition, prevention, detection, prosecution and punishment of cybercrimes in Nigeria.

Oluwatoyin Dada, an internet security expert, said ladies appeared to be most vulnerable to ‘cyber-love’ related crimes.

“If you must meet (through WhatsApp groups), be sure that the number is a properly registered number; ask for their pictures, get their names and share same update on the group.

“It is important to share when you are expected to return and turn on location sharing device while you’re out for added peace of mind.”

Dada said these rules apply to private job interviews; for both drivers and customers of e-hailing apps.

Eniola Ebuka, a social media enthusiast, therefore, advised against traveling long distances to meet social media friends.

Ebuka said where such visits become necessary, sleeping over night with them should be avoided.

“If they ask for personal or financial information too soon; if their behaviour or demand to meet you in person is overly intense or persistent, that is a red flag,’’ Ebuka said.

Ebuka also advised running a search with their social media account names, saying that “if you find multiple accounts on one platform with the same picture, they’re probably fake’’.

“You can also run an image search –to do this, save one of the person’s `selfies` or images on your device, then go to images.google.com and upload the image.

“You’ll be able to see if the picture matches the name or has a criminal record.

“Try and look for mutual friends or connections on social media, this can help establish credibility and trust and you can build the relationship gradually,’’ she said.

Ebuka advised ladies to avoid being quick to share personal information, challenges or weakness too quickly.

Abass Yaro, an ex-police officer, advised ladies not to feel pressured to meet their dates in a private or secluded locations.

“Let them always meet in a well-populated area like a coffee shop, restaurant or a park.

“If you have to excuse yourself at any point, such as to use the restroom, do not leave your purse, drink or cell phone unattended.

“Being in control of your transportation, including transport fare, gives you control and the ability to leave whenever you feel uncomfortable.

“Avoid secluded locations or private spaces such as invitee’s home or office, until you’ve established trust over a long period of time,’’ Yaro said.  (NAN) www.nannews.ng

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy (FMACTCE) Hannatu Musawa, says plans are underway to establish a Diaspora City in Nigeria to boost inbound tourism.

The minister stated this when she inaugurated a committee to drive the Motherland 2025 Initiative on Friday in Abuja.

Musawa said the Motherland 2025 Initiative was aimed at positioning Nigeria as a premier global destination, where tourism would drive economic empowerment, cultural preservation and national pride.

The committee members were drawn from the FMACTCE, Motherland Africa team and the National Tourism Development Authority (NTDA).

The members were also drawn from the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), and Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN).

She said the committee’s primary objective is to ensure the successful implementation of the Motherland 2025 Initiative, maintain timely delivery, effective oversight and monitoring of project implementation.

According to Musawa, the Diaspora City is a flagship component of the Motherland project that is a thriving tourism hub.

“This is where members of the diaspora can seamlessly invest and ensure a sustainable connection with their homeland and roots,’’ she said.

Musawa added that a citizenship programme would be supported by legal frameworks to enable diaspora and foreign nationals to obtain citizenships to safeguard their investments in Nigeria.

“Motherland 2025 is more than just a moment in time; it is a catalyst for sustained engagement, forging lasting connections between the diaspora and their homeland.

“Investors, opportunities, global travellers and Nigeria’s dynamic experiences.

“As part of the long-term components of the project, we are developing Diaspora City, a thriving tourism hub where members of the diaspora can seamlessly invest, reconnect, and put down roots.

“I charge the committee members to be diligent and work toward deliverables and timelines set to achieve successful outcomes from this initiative,” she said.

The minister said that the Motherland 2025 Initiative was a collaborative effort of the FMACTCE and Motherland Africa.

The minister added that the collaboration would include other key stakeholders, such as federal ministries, government agencies, and private sector organisations.

According to Musawa, the Motherland 2025 Initiative is part of the ministry’s broader strategy, “Destination 2030: Nigeria Everywhere.”

“This is an initiative designed to amplify the creative industries, strengthen international partnerships and elevate Nigeria’s global cultural footprint.”

She said key projects under the initiative included the Motherland 2025 Festival, which would expose the global diaspora to peak experiences of Nigerian arts, culture and creative landscape from the 36 states and the FCT.

She said the festival, scheduled to hold from Dec. 15 to Dec. 21 in Lagos and Abuja, would reconnect investments and celebrate Nigeria’s shared heritage.

“Nigeria is the largest black nation in the world, as one in every four persons of African origin is Nigerian. Our cultural and historical significance is undeniable.

“Whether through ancestry, culture or spirit, we welcome all who seek to rediscover their roots and contribute to the next chapter of our nation’s story.

“Through the Motherland Festival and its citizenship programme, we will empower individuals to trace their ancestry, fostering deeper bonds with Nigeria’s rich heritage,’’ she said.

Musawa used the opportunity to urge Nigerians abroad to come home and take part in the celebration, billed for December.

“This December, be part of something historic and experience our warmth, our culture and the limitless opportunities.

“Together, let us build a future that honours our heritage while driving economic and social progress forward, that is why we say, home is coming,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Advocate urges Africans to focus attention on addressing poverty, underdevelopment

Founder of Loretta Health Initiative, an NGO, Dr Loretta Ogboro-Okor, has called on Africans to shift their attention from celebrity fashion to addressing issues of poverty, conflict and underdeveloped infrastructure.

Ogboro-Okor, made the call in Abuja while reacting to the global debates surrounding Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori controversial appearance at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

Censori attended the grammy’s red carpet in a transparent nearly naked dress, igniting varied reactions from some Africans who celebrated it while others described it as “shameful”.

Ogboro-Okor, an aspirant in the 2024 Edo governorship election, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that celebrity fashion was simply a “distraction” from the real issues.

“My concern is not the spectacle itself, but how it overshadows the urgent issues Africa is grappling with.

“Our focus had remained on a celebrity moment. This should be the least of our concerns when there is war in Congo, economic distress in other African countries with millions suffering from poverty and conflict.

“The ongoing conflict in Congo, where millions have been displaced was in contrast with the obsession over celebrity fashion and material wealth.

“Africa should not be consumed by the spectacle of global celebrity culture, which often distracts us from addressing the continent’s most urgent challenges,” she said.

She stressed the need for a collective focus on tackling systemic problems such as poverty, conflict, underdeveloped infrastructure and other pressing issues facing the continent.

Ogboro-Okor pointed out the disconnection between the celebrity culture that dominated the online space and the severe crises affecting millions across the continent.

She lamented the growing competition for luxury and a lifestyle that many could not afford, while millions lack access to basic necessities.

According to her, this fixation with fleeting trends highlights Africa’s misdirected priorities.

“No one will love us more than we love ourselves as Africans,” she said, urging fellow Africans to focus on family, community, and nation-building rather than materialism or fame.

“While the continent is rich in resources, it continues to be exploited and distracted by external validation. Africa must look inward to achieve real progress.

“It is time for Africans to take control of their future and focus on self-sufficiency, building stronger communities, and addressing systemic issues that hinder development.”

She urged Africa to stop being passive observers of its own destiny and start prioritising what truly matters.

She said, “the time for meaningful change is now. We must act collectively to transform Africa’s future”. (NAN)

Valentine: Spotify reveals massive surge in heartbreak music streams

Music streaming platform, Spotify, says there has been a significant surge in heartbreak song streams in Nigeria during the Valentine’s Day season, with a 626 per cent increase between 2022 and 2024.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa, revealed this trend in a statement released on Thursday in Lagos.

Okumu said, “Spotify data reveals a surprising trend, a massive surge in heartbreak song streams.

“Nigerians are turning to their playlists to process their emotions, with a staggering 626 per cent overall growth in heartbreak streams from 2022 to 2024.

“This Valentine, the sound of love is accompanied by the sound of heartbreak, and the data shows it’s louder than ever before.”

According to her, one heartbreak that Nigerians collectively mourned was the tragic passing of street pop artiste, Mohbad.

Okumu noted that Spotify data revealed that on Valentine’s Day in 2024, Egwu by Chike and Mohbad ranked among the top three most-streamed songs by Nigerians.

She said other tracks that topped the charts included “One Love – Bob Marley: One Love – Music Inspired By The Film” by Wizkid ranking at number one, and Shallipopi and Odumodublvck’s “Cast” at number three.

“In 2023, Omah Lay’s deeply emotional song “Soso”, a melancholic cry for relief from pain, was among the top three most streamed songs on Valentine’s Day.

“It was joined by j-hope’s “Arson” and Ayra Starr’s “Sability”.

“While one might assume listening to heartbreak music would peak at night, a period known for deep reflection, Spotify data reveals otherwise.

“It turns out that Nigerians listen to heartbreak songs most often between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

“For three years, heartbreak music has been a surprising part of Nigerians’ morning routine.

“Whether it’s a lingering breakup or a heavy heart, offices, cubicles and workspaces in Nigeria are filled with people working, headphones on, starting their day tuned into heartbreak songs and quietly processing their emotions,” she said.

Okumu said there is a common belief that women are more expressive about heartbreak but Spotify data revealed a different story when it comes to music consumption.

She said on Valentine’s Day, most surprisingly, male listeners streamed heartbreak songs at a significantly higher rate than female listeners, with a 362 per cent increase compared to 169 per cent among women.

“This could suggest that men resonate with the feeling of heartbreak more and turn to music as a private outlet for processing emotions.

“Whatever the reason, one thing is clear, when love is in the air, so is heartbreak and Nigerian men are pressing play on their pain more than expected.

“While Valentine’s Day is often celebrated with grand gestures, heartbreak is a common theme on Valentine’s Day -more than what’s publicly shown,” she said. (NAN) (nannews.ng)
