Nollywood actors Charles Inojie and Ali Nuhu, on Tuesday enjoined Nigerians to always speak out against domestic violence.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ali Nuhu was recently appointed as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC).
Inojie along with Nuhu, through their instagram handles released a compelling video urging Nigerians to break the culture of silence surrounding domestic violence.
Using their platforms, they aim to empower Nigerians to recognise their ability to make a difference by speaking out against domestic violence within their communities.
In the video, the actors find themselves in a restaurant witnessing a disturbing instance of domestic violence.
While Nuhu initially suggested ignoring the situation, Inojie emphasised the importance of taking action, declaring, “Evil thrives when good men keep quiet.”
Together, they rally those present to demonstrate their disapproval by making noise and taking a stand against the violence.
With statistics showing that one in every three Nigerian women has experienced domestic violence, the hashtag #MakeWeHalla# serves as a call to action, inviting bystanders to join in opposing domestic violence.

Mr Victor Okhai, Founder, International Film and Broadcast Academy (IFBA), has urged youths in the country to learn skills to achieve self-sustainability.

He said this would reduce the unemployment rate among the youth and develop the national economy as well as enhance self-reliance among them.

Okhai said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on the sideline of the conclusion of a five-day training of 100 up-and-coming photographers on the art of photography.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was held at the Academy Centre, in Surulere area of Lagos State.

He explained that the training would enhance skills of the participants and also help in filling the void of inadequate skills acquisition amongst the youth.

“We are training 100 photographers on the techniques of photography, as this is part of our mandate to offer free training to over 20 million people around the continent.

“Skills acquisition is very important as it plugs different holes and ensures that people can explore and use their skills set to use.

“We have been doing this type of training over the years and we are committed to ensuring that we empower the masses through these means and give people the platform to enhance and put their skills into use,” he said.

Okhia, who is also the President of Director Guild of Nigeria (DGN), revealed that the participants of the training were selected from faith-based organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations and advert placement of Facebook.

He said that 2000 people in each state would be empowered before the half of the year, adding that collaborations with the Federal Government and NGOs will aid in spreading the outreach.

“We plan to spread the outreach to other parts of state as that is part of our mandate. So, collaboration with the government and its agencies would help us do more.

“We remain committed to ensuring that we play our part in ensuring that we impact the lives of the people through empowerment programme as this,” he said.

One of the participants, Mr Michael Adeyinka, who is a person with disability, applauded the training noting that it would help him develop a new skill.

Adeyinka, who is a Disc Jockey by profession, said,“I’m very glad I was able to do this training as I was always interested in enhancing my skills in photography, so, this was a great opportunity for me.”

Abaji Yahaja, an actress and movie producer, said the training would help in improving her photography skills as she has always known the basics about it. (NAN)

Afrobeat: Shalamar legend, Jeffrey Daniel applauds Nigerian music talents

Afrobeat: Shalamar legend, Jeffrey Daniel applauds Nigerian music talents

By Joshua Olomu

Jeffrey Daniel of the legendary American R&B vocal group ‘Shalamar,’ has applauded the ingenuity of Nigerian musicians and array of talents in the country.

He gave the commendation when he featured on NAN Forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

According to the multi-talented music legend, the Nigerian music industry has produced most of the best artistes from the continent that have showcased the African music genre on the global stage.

“When I got here in 2010, and I looked around, I said, my God, wait till the world see what is going to come out of Nigeria, as I was calling it the Nigerian renaissance.

“ I was right; now look at what is coming, Burnay Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Tems and lot of others, I knew this was going to happen.

“The funny thing back then in 2010, if you went out, 90 percent of the music that you hear in the clubs was American music, and that 10 percent was Nigerian music.

“Now, it is the other way around; it is 90 percent Nigerian music and 10 percent foreign music, and I am very proud of the Nigerian music industry, how it has grown up.

“They have their own thing and I would love to see their own thing blossom and develop because that is what will make the rest of the world intrigued by them.

“A lot of them are already telling their stories within their music and it is coming out loud,” he said.

Daniel, who was a judge on the first three seasons of the popular talent hunt show ‘Nigerian Idol’, however urged Nigerian music artistes to keep their originality in telling their stories.

He advised that the quest for foreign validations in form of awards and contracts should not make Nigerian artistes discard their uniqueness and style.

According to him, African music already has strong appeal and acceptance on the global stage.

“I understand that they want to be like the Chris Browns and the Jay -Zs and all that, but you still represent something better when you tell your own story.

“I see that a lot of Nigerian artistes are now going over there, signing contracts, publishing deals overseas, and when you go over there, you are dealing with their culture, with their paradigm.

“They want to be a part of that, and they want to get that big money, but when will Africa start standing for our own?

“I would love to partner with some Nigerian artistes, help develop some artistes, but at the same time, I do not want to compromise their thing.

“Still there are things that they can incorporate in their works so that they do not fall in some of the trap like some of their Americans counterpart’s did,” he said.

Speaking on the trendy ‘Japa Sydrome’, especially among the youths, Daniel who is married to a Nigerian and now based in the country, said it was time Nigerians look inward and develop their own.

He however added that the resourceful and creative Nigerian youths only needed more support from within for them to stop the rush for greener pasture and validation abroad.

“Now people say, why am I here when Nigerians are trying to go over there? but what are they going there for? I was born and raised over there so I know what is there.

“There is no doubt that Africa is the most resource-rich continent on the planet.

“I am not talking about just resources in the ground, I am talking about human resourcesm because right now, Nigerians are the number one university students in America.

“Nigerians are some of the number one doctors, engineers, pediatricians, designers, or whatever in America, in the UK, and Canada.

“You have resilience and the tenacity of the Nigerian people, African people and all we have to do is fix what we have here, then we will have this amazing experience,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

African music needs no external validation – Jeffrey Daniel

African music needs no external validation – Jeffrey Daniel

Jeffrey Daniel, American multi-talented music legend, says African music does not need external validation for significance.

According to him, “it already has strong appeal and acceptance on the global stage”.

The singer-songwriter, dancer and choreographer, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

Daniel, a founding member of the renowned R&B vocal group ‘Shalamar,’ stated this amidst growing agitations by African music artistes for international awards and recognition, especially the Grammys in recent times.

According to him, it is high time Africa learnt from the intrigues that trailed the recently concluded 66th Grammy Award, with the creation of an African category and look inward to celebrate itself.

“I don’t think African music artistes need to seek validation from America to know how great they are because they are already great and they are taking over the world.

“You don’t need validation from America and other places because in reality, when P-Square, D’banj, MI, and all those people were popular, they were basically still within the continent.

“They were making more money than some American artistes and getting accolades more than them, but they wanted that validation from America because they looked up to the American music industry.

“Today, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido and others are selling out stadiums and arenas around the world, so why do they need the Grammys to say, okay, we accept you when they are already accepted.

“I would like to see Africa get behind all the stress and create its own platform and support its own, besides the Headies.

“Over there in America is about 350 million people, while the African continent is about 1.4 billion, so this is even a bigger market than America.

“I think this market will better validate the African success barometer,” he said.

The “A Night to Remember” crooner particularly lauded the remarkable progress the Nigerian entertainment industry has made, especially Nollywood films that are now known across the globe.

He commended both Nigerian music and motion picture artistes, adding that they only need more support from within for them to stop the rush for greener pasture and validation abroad..

“The Nigerian movie industry, which is the second largest in the world, has really told African story to the world, and that is commendable.

“They might not make as much money as American stars when they make a movie, but you guys have your own industry, and I think that means a lot,” he said.

NAN recall that after the 66th Grammy Award was held earlier in the year, Afrobeat fans and industry players accused the Recording Academy of using Nigerian artistes to market the show for viewership purposes.

They argued that despite having five Nigerian artistes nominated in 10 combined different categories, none won. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nollywood movie, ‘Kill Boro’, beams light on family values

Nollywood movie, ‘Kill Boro’, beams light on family values

By Adebola Adegoke

A new movie titled, “Kill Boro”,  produced by First Features Project, which addresses family values has premiered in Lagos.

Starring Ini Dima-Okojie, Kosi Ogboruche, Philip Asaya, the film showcases relatable themes such as family, love, protection, redemption and sacrifice.

The movie, depicts the intricacies of family conflict, domestic abuse and the challenges faced by children from abusive homes.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the private screening of the movie, in Lagos, on Saturday night, Executive Producer, Steve Gukas, said the story would hit people in different ways that they would remember for a long time.

According to him, it is a gripping story that follows the life of Elijah, a young child who reacts to the way his father treats his mother.

“He takes matters into his hands with serious consequences but in the end, everyone finds joy and happiness.

“It explores the theme of family and domestic abuse and how it impacts the main person suffering and children that are caught up in the middle of it.

“What this film deals with is the reaction of such children placed in this situation, in the case of Elijah.

“What he choses to do and how he goes about it, is what is  going to hit people the most,” Gukas said.

Gukas, who is also a co-founder of the First Features Project, said it was hinged on supporting first-time directors by providing training, mentorship, and a platform to succeed in the industry.

“The project is a give-back process for us.

“For young directors coming up, I believe that we should be able to mentor and support their vision.

“So, what we are trying to do with these young directors on our project is to open the doors of the industry;  give a platform to show what they can do and how they continue depends on them.

“These 12 young filmmakers that we have trained will take over the industry because we have imbibed in them a work ethic that is uncommon,” he said.

NAN reports that ‘Kill Boro’, is directed by Courage Obayuwana.

Obayuwana  said the film, set in Port Harcourt, Rivers, reflects reality of people living in abusive homes.

“The movie is tricky because when you get to watch the movie, you realise that it may seem like we are trivialising the act of domestic violence at some point but there are lessons to be learned.

“We often wonder why people stay in abusive relationships and this story explores a little bit to see the inner mind of women that choose to stay in abusive homes and how it affects the children.

“I hope people take note that they have to seek help,  if not, it can also affect people around them,” he said.

Kosi Ogboruche, a child actor who plays the lead role ‘Elijah’ in the movie, recounts his experience and lessons from the movie.

“It was exciting coming out of my comfort zone and acting as a rugged street boy.

“Playing Elijah was emotional for me. I really felt the character  because he was trying to protect his mother from his abusive father.

“I think this sends a message to all abusive parents all around Nigeria. It shows the power of  love in a family and the lengths one can go to protect that love,” the young actor said.

Brutus Richard, one of the cast, said the movie depicts human strength and touches on depression, family conflicts and trust issues.

“I think a lot of people will identify with different aspects of the story and the characters.

“It  deals with the challenges that people go through everyday and how they go about resolving them; it’s about humanity for me,” he said. (NAN)

Lai Mohammed: How fake news almost ruined my 40-year old marriage

Lai Mohammed: How fake news almost ruined my 40-year old marriage

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, immediate past Minister of Information and National Orientation, has recounted how fake news peddled on social media almost crashed his 40-year old marriage.
The ex-minister gave the account in Lagos at an event to commemorate the 90th birthday anniversary of Prof. Wole Soyinka, Africa’s first Nobel laureate for literature.
The text of Mohammed presentation at the event, on the topic, “The Media in the Age of Disinformation”, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
Mohammed, the Managing Partner of Bruit Costard, a lobbyist and public relations firm, recalled that one of the pressing challenges he faced in office as minister was  the spate of fake news, misinformation and disinformation.
Speaking specifically on how the menace almost ruined his marriage, Mohammed stressed that the consequences of fake news, disinformation and misinformation were far-reaching.
“Permit me to share publicly with you today for the first time, how social media threatened the foundation of my 40-year-old marriage.
“It was sometimes in 2018 when I came to Lagos from Abuja for an official assignment.
“As usual, I retire to bed about midnight, but about 3 a. m., my wife gently roused me from my slumber.
“At first, I panicked, fearing that there had been a security breach, but my wife’s mien belied that possibility, for she was calm and composed,” the ex-minister said.
He continued: “Solemnly, my wife asked me if I was fully awake as there were some serious issues to discuss.
“I could not fathom what was that urgent or serious to warrant being woken up at this time of the night.
“My mind immediately did a kaleidoscope of my rascalities and escapades in the last few months”.
Mohammed said that the accusation from his wife was “a bombshell” and was narrated to him in Yoruba language.
He presented the narration as follows:
“Daddy, death can come knocking at any moment, please let me also, as your wife, be a signatory to your oversea account in Ali Financial which contains 1.3 billion dollars.”
The former minister said he could not believe that his wife could take, hook, line, and sinker the fake story in circulation crediting humongous sums of money in overseas accounts to government functionaries/ministers under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“I spent the next two hours or so, sweating to convince my wife that there is no iota of truth in the allegation.
“I had to fetch a calculator and reproduce the Federal Appropriation Act for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 in the middle of the night and explain to her why it is simply preposterous for me to have 1.3 billion dollars in a foreign account.
“I explained to her that there is no year my capital budget exceeded N5 billion, which  then, at about N400 to a dollar, was just 12.5 million dollars.
“I explained that, even if I managed to divert every kobo of it to my personal account, it will take at least, 104 years to save the sum of 1.3 billion dollars being peddled that I stole,” he said.
Mohammed added: “My wife insisted that the whole world believed the story and that her friends had, as a result, besieged her with all kinds of requests.
“She said every effort on her part to deny the existence of this foreign account only succeeded in depicting her in the minds of her friends as a selfish, greedy and uncaring friend.
“Is my wife truly convinced of my innocence? The answer is in the wind!. “
Mohammed reiterated that social media remained the platforms of choice for the purveyors of fake news, anti-state groups, anarchists, secessionists, terrorists and bandits.
He recalled that while in government, his ministry uncovered 476 online publications that were dedicated to spreading fake news against the former administration of Buhari.
Mohammed specifically recalled the fake news that the former president had died while receiving treatment in a London hospital and was replaced by a clone called “Jubril from Sudan”.
According to him,  the challenge of fake news continued up to the campaigns leading to the 2023 general elections where President Bola Tinubu became a target, when videos and speeches attributed to him were manipulated and distorted.
He said the purveyors of fake news were relentless in their efforts to de-market the laudable policies and programmes of the Tinubu’s administration.
Mohammed said fake news had become exponential through the use of Artificial Intelligence and deep learning techniques to create highly realistic fake or manipulated videos, audio recordings or images.
“The consequences of disinformation and misinformation are far-reaching.
“They undermine democratic processes, sow discord within communities, and pose significant threats to public health and safety.
“Today, even the media is at the risk of losing its credibility because of the proliferation of fake news on the Social Media
“Therefore, the media, as custodians of the public trust, must take decisive action to combat the scourge of disinformation and misinformation,” he said
Mohammed said that social media platforms and other intermediaries accountable for their role in amplifying disinformation and misinformation should be held responsible
According to him, they should be checkmated through robust regulatory frameworks to curb the spread of false information while safeguarding freedom of expression.
He admonished social media platforms to prioritise the integrity of information over profit motives and take proactive measures to detect and remove harmful content from their platforms. (NAN)

WPD: Korea centre boss urges poets to inspire humanity with creativity

WPD: Korea centre boss urges poets to inspire humanity with creativity

Mr Kim Changki, Director, Korea Cultural Centre in Nigeria (KCCN), has urged poets to use their  creative writing to inspire humanity for the betterment of society and preservation of cultural core values.

Changki said this at the KCCN March Culture Day Event with the theme: “Express Your Korea” in commemoration of the World Poetry  Day (WPD), on Thursday in Abuja.

The director was represented by Ms Suyeong Kim, Cultural Event Manager of KCCN.

He said that the centre on the day always looked at the poetic side of individuals in the likes of Yoon-Dong Ju, Kim Sowol, Lee Jenny, who had impacted humanity with their poetry.

According to him, poetry has become a way to learn, understands cultures as well as the emotions of other people.

He said that poetry predated literacy, adding that the very first poem could be dated back to 3,500 years ago.

“The word ‘Poetry’ itself means ‘create’, and today after a brief presentation on the essence of poetry, you will be divided into groups to be creative.

“An experience I hope you all are looking forward to as I urge you all to engage yourselves in cultural art, looking forward to seeing your artistic side,” he said.

Mr Matthew Nweze, an English and literature in English teacher, Saints Simon and Jude Seminary Kuje, said writing poetry seemed to be interesting, compared to reading due to the feeling attached.

Nweze, who spoke on the topic: “How to write and Read  Poetry as a Beginner”, said a good poet had  to be inspired with wonders of nature and such could occur in a quiet place.

According to him, poetry is not written in paragraphs or chapters but in a few words in single lines.

He  said that those words might not make a meaning to the reader initially, but meaning and understanding comes as he or she continues to read.

“The properties of poetry such as stanza, rhyme, rhythm, among others give poetry the flavours to be sung as a song.

“Something must cross your mind when writing poetry in order to inspire.

“You must have emotional feelings because poetry is not what you sit down and start thinking; rather something must strike your mind.

“It can be a gentle incident, a single word, social or moral issues or wonders of nature.

“You determine the format in which you want to write because a particular pattern may restrict expression of emotions on points to make in a poem,” he said.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of poems like ‘Against My Better Judgment’  ‘Korea Affairs’ ‘My Korea ‘ ‘Hallyu’ ‘The Line Where We All Meet’ and ‘Soul My Soul ‘ by various groups of participants.

Ms Shammah Teru, group one leader and presenter of the poem ‘The Line where We All Meet’ emerged winner.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Poetry Day, which was created by UNESCO in 1999 is celebrated on March 21.

It aimed at supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression, and increasing the opportunity for endangered language to be heard. (NAN)

A Delta High Court sitting in Effurun has granted Brownhill Investment Company and Mr David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, an out-of-court settlement.

Justice Michael Obi of High Court Three, Effurun, on Thursday commended both parties for the amicable resolution to settle out of court.

“I commend both parties for exploring an amicable resolution to settle out of court,” Obi said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Brownhill Investment Company is owned by Mr Amaju Pinnick, former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The company had in Oct. 2023 filed a suit, marked EHC/183/2023, before the court having the afrobeat singer, Davido, and his music label, Davido Music Worldwide Limited, as joint defendants.

NAN recalls that the company had sued the defendants over a breach of contract to perform at the 19th edition of the ‘Warri Again Concert’.

In the suit, the appellant prayed the court to award a sum of N2 billion as general damages against the defendants for failing to honour the contract of the concert.

Pinnick’s company also prayed the court for N150 million as legal and professional fees with an additional N30 million as the filling cost.

Responding to the court verdict, counsel to the defendants, Mr Oladayo Ogungbe, told NAN after the court’s proceedings that both parties had been able to explore the out-of-court settlement.

“Davido is coming again to Warri on Oct. 4 to perform – that forms part of the settlement.

“It’s fine. It is better than going through the rigours of litigations.

“Both parties consider the option of having the matter settled out of court, which in my opinion as a lawyer, is the best approach to any litigation.

“It is a win-win situation to both parties,” Ogungbe said.

NAN reports that the ‘Warri Again” concert is an annual event organised by Pinnick to celebrate entertainers from the Niger Delta region. (NAN) www.nannews.ng
