Guiness World Record holder, Hilda Baci, will display her world-beating culinary skills in Lagos on Friday, July 14, to raise funds for a widow.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Baci’s dishes will be tasted in an initiative by Joseph Edgar, The Duke of Shomolu, to assist widows and empower them to be self-reliant.

Edgar, Chief Executive Officer of Duke of Shomolu Productions, a theatrical play producing outfit, disclosed this to NAN on Sunday.

He said that Baci is expected to display her “mesmerising skills which enamoured the world and saw her emerge as the Guiness record holder in a bid to raise N1 million for a widow”.

He said that the initiative, which had been running for the last three years, had raised more than N10 million for deserving widows.

“The initiative involves very close friends and associates of The Duke of Shomolu, donating cash instead of gifts to mark his birthdays.

“The cash gifts are then sent to needy widows, who would have been nominated by members of the public.

“Last year, N2 million was donated to four deserving widows by the friends and associates of the Duke of Shomolu

“This year, N3 million was raised with the winner, who got N1 million, nominated by a director at Keystone Bank, Mr Yemi Odusanya, who incidentally shares same birthday with the Duke.”

Edgar himself chose 10 other widows from among the close to 100 nominees who shared N1million.

He said that Baci would be cooking for 10 people at the Ivy Hotel at Emerald in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

According to him, the sum of N1 million will be donated to a widow of her choice.

He said that Prothrive Astute heights Ltd., makers of Grandios Pap, would sponsor the event as part of its social responsibility. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Gangs of Lagos: Amazon claims film not injurious to anyone

By Mateen Badru

Amazon Web Services Nigeria, a subsidiary of Amazon Inc. and founder of Prime Video Nigeria, has claimed that its film, “Gangs of Lagos”, is not injurious to anyone.

This was revealed in a preliminary objection by the global entertainment company in a suit filed by the Isale-Eko Descendants Union (IDU), among others, and made available to the  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

NAN reports that the company is a defendant in a suit, No LD/6903GCM/2023, before a Lagos High Court, instituted by the IDU, following its production ‘Gang of Lagos’.

The IDU had sued the company, claiming N10 billion damages before Justice Idowu Alakija of the Lagos High Court, over the contents of the film.

Alakija had fixed October date to determine Amazon’s preliminary objection to the suit.

The defendants had queried Lagos State’s jurisdiction over the production of the film before the court by some indigenes of the state.

In the suit, the defendants are questioning the authority of the Lagos State Government to censor films and videos produced within its jurisdictionas stipulated in the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State, 2004.

Amazon, accused of alleged depiction of the claimants’ territory as a den of criminals and its traditional Eyo as a gang, argued that the state’s Cinematography Law was inapplicable in the matter.

Equally, the defendants sought an order of the court pursuant to Section 25(1)(q) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to strike out the suit as it lacked the jurisdiction to entertain same.

According to the defendants, the Law under which the suit was filed was not relevant to the video and films censors law of Lagos State, explaining that the appropriate law was that of the National Film and Video Censors Board Act, 1993.

Aside the corporate body, other defendants in the suit are Mrs Jadesola Osiberu, Ms Kemi Lala-Akindoju, Mr Adesegun Adetoro, Demi Olubanwo, Mr Olumide Soyombo and Mr Bankole Wellington.

Other defendants in the suit are Mrs Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Mr Kola Aina, Greoh Ltd. and Amazon Web Services Nigeria for an alleged sacrilegious and scandalous depiction of Eyo Masquerade in the movie.

The claimants are Chief Ayodele Bajulaiye, who sued on behalf of Bajulaiye Chieftaincy Family and Eyo Iga Bajulaiye and Chief Abdul-Waheed Ayeni on behalf of Sasore Chieftaincy Family and Eyo Iga Sasore.

However, in its preliminary objection, Amazon challenged the powers of the Lagos State Government on its regulatory role in the case.

It consequently requested the court to dismiss the Lagos State Cinematography Law which they claimed was enacted outside the legislative competence of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The defendants claimed that the High Court of Lagos State had no jurisdiction to compel the Lagos State Government to censor the said film under its Cinematography Law which it argued falls within the provisions of the National Film and Video Censors Board Act.

The 1999 constitution, the defendants averred precludes the High Court of Justice from ‘’exercising jurisdiction over interpretation of the Constitution as it relates to the Federal Government and its agencies’’. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Taiye Olayemi

The desire to go on honeymoon after the consummation of marriages is every couple’s dream. Beautiful destinations and exotic getaways suitable to cater for honeymoon adventures continues to spring up across the African continent.

Honeymoon has lots of therapeutic effect on couples who engage in it as it gives room for ultimate relaxation after going through the stress of planning and executing wedding ceremony.

Honeymoon also allows for the couple to bond well enough before resuming back to their various official duties.

The recently concluded 6th AccraWeizo West Africa Travel and Tourism Market revealed choice honeymoon destinations across Ghana.

Ghana, which covers an area of about 238,535 km2 (92,099 sq mi), spanning diverse biomes that range from coastal savannas to tropical rainforests, has been naturally endowed with many go-to-see potential to accomodate tourists for holiday and honeymoon purposes.

With over 32 million inhabitants, Ghana is the second most populous country in West Africa, after Nigeria.

The 6th AccraWeizo came alive again from May 23 to 27, 2023 after three years hiatus due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, with the theme “Tourism Development Through Digitalisation”.

It began with familiarisation tours to tourists destinations within Akosombo and Accra cities like the Royal Senchi resorts, the Peninsula Resort and Golf Club as well as the Accra City Hotel.

These destinations are strategically designed to attract tourists due to the unusual African architectural designs put in place to give aesthetics.

According to Emmanuel Mensah, Sales and Marketing Manager of the Royal Senchi Resort, the facility is the first four-star luxury resort in Ghana.
Mensah said it is a destination suitable for honeymoon because of its serenity, romantic ambience, lush greenery with a magnificent view of the famous Volta River.
He said the resort stands on 35 acres of lush greenery and a unique blend of fauna, flora, traditional architecture, and modernity of the highest standards.
“The Royal Senchi is known as West Africa’s most romantic hotel destination. We are also an ideal venue for business meetings, conferences, and other special events.
“We have 84 rooms, 74 are standard rooms, nine suites and one presidential room for the Very Important Personalities (VIP).
“Due to the quality of our services, we have won a number of coveted awards,” he said.
Mensah urged more Africans to visit the resort because of the therapeutic nature of most of the materials used in putting up the facility.
For instance, instead of the usual cement and glass for the construction, woods and rafia produce were used for mental and psychological healing to visitors.
“We are looking at adding much more activities for tourists on the resort, like ziplining, playground for kids, canopy walkway, luxury tents, additional swimming pool and more.
“Maintaining this resort has not been easy, we engage in serious maintainance annually, serious hard work goes into this; we import treated thatch from South Africa every year, to replace the old ones.
“We are committed to greenery and environmental issues, also very soon we will stop supplying plastic bottled water, but glass bottled water,” he said.
Also, the Peninsula Resort in Akosombo, known as a destination to discover serenity, is a relaxing countryside retreat that invites individuals to escape the hustling lifestyle of the city life.
This is located amidst the majestic Akosombo mountains on a sprawling country estate where hiking and canopy walk are most suitable.

Mr Robert Thompson, General Manager, The Peninsula Resort, said the resort offers a charming blend of classic style, elegant comfort, spectacular views and rich natural heritage.

According to Thompson, the Peninsula Resort sits on a 300-acre of land, endowed with a lake, serene atmosphere, hills, and hiking capacity of two kilometres, among others.
He said the longest canopy walkway in West Africa is also located at the resort which is about 550 metres long.
He added that the management of the resort was planning to upgrade its facilities by constructing apartments for long and short stay accommodation to make it a one-stop resort.
According to him, other attractive activities that tourists can enjoy at the resort include archery, swimming, horse riding, lawn and table tennis, as well as golf and boat cruise.
Accra City Hotel, Ghana’s first internationally branded Hotel in 1988 and first ISO certified hotel in West Africa, could also cater for honeymoon adventures with about 196 well-furnished guest rooms ranging from Queen-size to studio units.
Mr Ekow Sampson, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), during the conference session of the tourism expo, said Ghana has many more choice destinations for honeymoon and conferencing.
The expo which seeks to improve seamless travels across the West African region had in attendance delegates from different countries, exhibiting series of travel and tourism products.

Mr Ikechi Uko, organiser of the expo, advised Africans to intensify efforts toward working unanimously to achieve seamless travels across the continent.

Uko said West Africans with over 400 million people, are seen to be among the most travelled across the world. And if formidable synergies are created to make West Africa a domestic market for all, Africa will be taking its pride of place globally.

“What we can achieve together is amazing but unfortunately, we have not explored well enough. If only 10 per cent of West Africans can be made to travel within the region, we will be making fortune as Africans.

“A lot of countries get their travelling population from West Africa; we must stop the usual numerous check points on our roads to improve seamless travels,” he said.

Veteran musicians seek synergy between old, new generation artistes

Some veteran musicians have called for  a unified body and  purposeful leadership to unite the old and new generation of musicians in the country.

They made their opinions known on Thursday in an online group known as  ‘Entertainment Gurus’,  created by veteran musician,  Innocent Onyemauwa, popularly known  as Daddy Fresh.

Veteran Nigerian musician, Mike Okri, who dominated the music scene in the 1980s and 1990s with hits like ‘Rhumba Dance’ and ‘Time Na Money’, said “no one can completely exist without the other.

“Just like other parts  of the world we need a unified union with a purposeful leadership to unite the old and new generation. That is the missing link between the two.

“No one can completely exist without the other, as the very foundation of the industry depends on the rich combined wealth and colourful culture of talents of both.

“Remember, experience remains the best teacher, knowing also the young artistes  themselves will one day become old-school.”

According to Daddy Fresh, not all old or evergreen artistes are selfish.

“I started my career and I know the multitudes I carried along with me to have their way to limelight and with the help of God.

“I know so many elders here today who also contributed to my success and growth today as a vocalist to reckon with in our industry till date, Uncle Mike Okri is one of them,“ he said.

Another veteran musician, Jas Kelly, also called for a better relationship and communication between both generations.

“You see, to conquer in life, we need to let love lead. There will be no solid foundation without good relationship. Let’s try to relate, communicate with one another, both old and new generation musicians.

“There has not been right relationship between us, everybody is  just doing things in their own way, believing,  I’m too old in the show biz to have to do with the new generation musicians, forgetting that we all need each other to succeed.

“So the answer here is love, humility and commitment,“ he said.

Also, Samuel K. Wright said the older generation musicians did not have a lot to learn from the present young generation musicians, because they had more access to assets than their older counterparts.

“What social media has shown over the past few years is that today’s younger musicians are not only more inclined to upper-class tastes, but they also have more access to it as well.

“The entertainment industry today has devised ways in which to usher them into the fold alongside their older music mentors.

“Another significant difference between older generation musicians and younger musicians is how much access they have to music promotions and styles, compared to their parents musicians and grandparents musicians.

“Being more educated and worldly than their predecessors, young musicians these days have had to develop new ways systematically in which to get their project’s musical sound through the major musical doors.

“There are some new bands that are doing it the old way and God bless them for trying,”  he said. (NAN)
