Author challenges gender disparities with new book titled ‘Ichabod’

Author challenges gender disparities with new book titled ‘Ichabod’

By Adebola Adegoke

A writer and renowned communications strategist, Ogochukwu Eloike, has addressed gender inequality in her new book titled ‘Ichabod’.

Eloike in a statement on Friday in Lagos called for societal change and a pivot from gender stereotypes.

The book is a narration of the feminine experience and how these experiences are being trivialised by society, thus widening the gender gap.

It provides practicable roles the society and individuals can play in entrenching equity and ameliorating gender wariness which has been on the rise in recent times.

To launch the book, the author kick-started hashtags campaign #Ichabod and #ImEnough to give women a voice and platform to share their life experiences in relation to manifestations of gender inequity and shortfalls.

According to her, through the hashtags, women and girls can share their experiences as girls and young adults living in patriarchal societies and how these experiences have shaped their life decisions thus far.

“The term Ichabod has biblical connotation which means lost glory and it is used as the book title to allude to various ways we have gotten the training and raising of the girls wrong by paying much tribute to male children across various touchpoints.

“Understandably, in recent times, we have a series of activities designed to celebrate girls and women, but, our socio-cultural foundation remains patriarchal.

“For instance, in the Nigerian political environment, the senate unanimously voted against a gender-balanced house in 2021.

“The action clearly depicts the perception of women as unequal and undeserving of leadership positions even when existing and emerging data shows that women, in some contexts are better leaders.

She said the book was a direct and honest analysis of current gender disparity situations, not just in Nigeria but across the globe.

The author revealed that she used real-life data garnered online and offline to measure various drivers of abuses, dissatisfaction, and perceived/established differences amongst both genders.

She said the insights from the book allow for a direct call to action for women as emerging data depict a rapid increase in gender-based violence especially by spouses or close family members.

“It is my hope that this book will trigger some sort of paradigm shift in various societies so that as people, we would pay more attention to the needs of each other instead of trying to subjugate and exert authority over one another,” she added.

The book also highlighted the imperative for various stakeholders starting from families to look beyond the status quo and become more involved in addressing foundational causes of misogyny.

“Unhappy mothers are most likely to raise unhappy children.

“Institutions like government parastatals and religious establishments are also required to put in place structures that would test and allow for equity and help in actively bridging the gap created by gender disparity,” the statement read.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Eloike is an astute and established communications strategist, a radical feminist, an audacious Christian and an education reforms advocate with over a decade of experience as a communications consultant for both local and multinational brands.

Her book, Ichabod, was published by Parresia Publishers Ltd, under the Origami imprint. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

NGO to honour exceptional youths with Young Achievers Awards

By Joshua Olomu

The Children of Africa Leadership and Values Development Initiative (CALDEV) says it plans to honour young Nigerians who have recorded exceptional feat in their careers with ‘Young Achievers Awards’ in its upcoming National Children Leadership Conference.

The Founder and President of CALDEV, Mr Bamidele Salam, said this on Monday at a news conference to unveil plans and programmes for the 2023 National Children Leadership Conference in Abuja.

According to him, the conference, with the theme, “Rebuilding Nigeria Through Investment in Children’s Education, Welfare and Security” is scheduled to hold from Nov. 17 to 21 in Abuja.

Salam said that the young achievers award was a flagship component of the conference designed to celebrate teenagers who have recorded excellence in their fields and to inspire others to work hard.

“The National Leadership Conference is a program put together to provide a platform for children between the ages of 12 and 17 from across a diverse sections of Nigerian.

“Nigerian teenagers from different parts of the country are expected to converge in Abuja for the purpose of leadership, training, mentoring, knowledge sharing, capacity building, competitions, networking and collaboration.

“We are not only bringing together children, but will give awards to those who have made remarkable impacts in terms of winning global laurels and make Nigeria proud.

“We are bringing together children who have made impact in the area of technology, innovation, sport, education and other areas.

“Participants for this conference will be children who have shown remarkable leadership capabilities in their schools, in the clubs and in other platforms.

“We are also looking forward to having a platform where the student will engage with policymakers, lawmakers, ministers and people who occupy various offices,” CALDEV founder said.

According to him, the conference is designed as a deliberate policy to coincide with the 2023 Universal Children’s Day, a UN day to celebrate children and also discuss issues on their welfare.

He said besides the awards , the event will feature leadership training, National Children Dialogue, visit to key government institutions, talent show competitions and children book exhibition, among other areas.

According to him, a crucial segment of the conference will be dedicated to Children’s Financial Literacy in order to empower them on prudence and accountability in managing both personal and public funds.

“We have discovered that financial literacy is a big issue among Nigerians, and our generation has lot of imbalance in people planning economic wellbeing.

“We believe that if we are able to mentor children to be knowledgeable about money, it will be better for us, and there is a bank that is coming to facilitate that session,” he said.

He added that participating children would present a communiqué to policy makers and other relevant stakeholders on issues affecting their wellbeing and future at the end of the conference.

Salam therefore urged parents, guardians, corporate bodies, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), schools, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders to enroll their children aged between 12-17 years to participate in the programme.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

U.S. forecasts 0bn revenue for Nigeria’s creative industries by 2030

U.S. forecasts $100bn revenue for Nigeria’s creative industries by 2030

By Busayo Onijala

An Assistant Secretary for U.S. Economic and Business Affairs, Ramnin Toloui, has forecast a 100 billion dollar revenue from Nigeria’s creative industries by 2030.

Toloui, who spoke during the Africa Creative Market Conference in Lagos on Monday, also said if the potential of the industry was well harnessed, it could create up to  2.7 million jobs by 2050.

The conference on Intellectual Property(IP) protection was organised by the U.S. Consulate in Lagos in partnership with Ascend Foundation Studios.

Toloui’s remarks aimed to highlight the importance of IP protection and enforcement framework in fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the creative industries.

According to him, the Nigerian creative sector has grown in leaps and bounds, with American actors now interested in featuring in Nigerian movies.

Part of this success, he said, was due to rising demand for Nigerian content from the global African diaspora.

This, Toloui said, has led to a steady rise in the export of African content through digital streaming and international touring, and growing numbers of African-based investors who are directing capital towards early-stage creator economy startups.

“The U.S. government supports and is proud to see burgeoning ties in the creative industries between the United States and Nigeria.

“Bringing both countries closer together and furthering investment opportunities in the film and television, music, arts, sports, gaming, and tech arenas.

“During the portion of the U.S.- Africa Summit that highlighted the economic potential of the creative industries, we announced our intention to partner with stakeholders across the creative ecosystem, creatives and policymakers alike, to help grow the creative economy.

“We have taken up this charge by focusing on a key piece of the puzzle that allows creatives to monetise their work and attract additional investment:  intellectual property protection,” he said.

Speaking on why the U.S., in its partnership with Nigeria, would highlight the creative industries, he said the cultural sector alone accounted for 3.1 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He added that according to the UN Conference on Trade and Development, the creative industries generated annual revenues of over 2 trillion dollars and accounted for nearly 50 million jobs worldwide.

He said strong IP rights regimes established secure legal frameworks for investment in – and commercialisation of – innovation and creativity.

This, he said, enabled firms, including innovative start-ups, to navigate the perilous process of transforming a creative work into a commercially viable product and to successfully compete in the global marketplace.

“A strong system of IP rights assures inventors, industrial designers, and creative artists that their ideas will be protected and that they can receive payment for the use of their creations.

“Strong IP protection, therefore, creates value and jobs that extend well beyond the traditional boundaries of the creative sector.  It attracts additional investment into the creative industries.

“This is why we are so delighted to see Nigeria continuing to invest in the growth of the creative industries with the newly announced Destination 2030 Initiative,” he said.

According to Toloui, the creative industries also employ more young people, namely those aged 15 to 29 than any other sector, with women constituting nearly half of the creative workforce.

He noted that several U.S. film and entertainment companies, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Paramount were making large investments in the Nigerian market and seeing strong prospects for future investments.

“Nigeria is a powerhouse of creativity, and we stand in steadfast partnership with all of you in this room to support the conditions that allow creatives to thrive.

“I want to see many more investments and increased commercial ties. It serves us all to support a sector that is creating equitable opportunity for all,” Toloui said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Its Founder, Fidelis Duker, said this in Abuja on Thursday night at the closing ceremony of AIFF with the theme“ Beyond Borders: Globalisation and the Film Business”

Duker said that the stakeholders were recognised for their support and contributions to the annual festival, making it a flagship event in the nation’s film industry.

According to him, the stakeholders are the Association of Movie Producers(AMP) , Directors Guild of Nigeria(DGN) and foremost filmmakers in the Nigerian film industry, among others.

“We also need to appreciate everyone who has been there for us in this amazing journey of building a foremost film festival in Abuja.

“It is truly remarkable to see how this event has grown from humble beginning when there were no cinemas in Abuja and Nigeria, to becoming a major contributor to the exhibition ecosystem in the country.”

Duker recalled that in the early days of the festival, film screening was a challenge due to the lack of dedicated cinema spaces, but it overcame the obstacle by leveraging on outdoor screenings and makeshift theatres in hotels.

“Through our constant dedication to promoting film culture, we were instrumental in fostering the development of cinemas and creating a demand for quality film experiences.

“This led to the establishment of numerous cinemas that now serve as vibrant hubs for film enthusiasts in the city,” he said.

According to him, this year’s edition of the festival explores the intersection between the rapidly evolving global film industry and the diverse cultures that shape it.

“We believe that cinema has the power to transcend boundaries and bring people together, providing a platform for cross-cultural understanding and exchange.”

Group builds capacity of artists on creative storytelling

Group builds capacity of artists on creative storytelling

By Usman Aliyu

Benin-based TellThatStory, a creative non-governmental media group, has convened a conference on creative storytelling for artists across the South-South states.

The Co-host of the group, Mr Babawale Obayanju, said the conference was aimed at strengthening and exposing the participants to a new level of potentials they had yet to explore.

According to him, this will be achieved, using the practical knowledge tools shared by identified skilled personnel from across Africa and the world.

On the conference entitled “Exposed!”, Obayanju said it had in its past four editions impacted well over 500 photographers and filmmakers, physically and virtually.

Beyond the usual photographers and filmmakers, he said this edition took a step further to engage artists in Nigeria following an identified knowledge gap in the creative space.

“We are truly pleased at the growth we have seen in the art community, especially the photography and filmmaking space, since we began the fulfillment of this mandate called TellThatStory in 2017.

“To provoke purposeful and intentional changes, where artists are producing quality and consistent bodies of work with the appropriate value for such works, at TellThatStory.

“We ensure that artists interrogate the environmental, political and social questions facing people everywhere.

“This is with a premium on the power of real stories by real people while promoting these stories and issues above the circles of the story or the fellowship of the artist,” said the co-host.

With a theme “The Artists in the Age of Anthropocene, examining the context of this Age – Globalisation, Urbanisation/Migration, and Climate Change,” he said the conference would empower young people from the South South, especially the participants.

Delivering the keynote address, Nnimmo Bassey, Executive Director, Home of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), described art as a tool for communicating change, saying the battles raging in the tumultuous age of anthropocene required that no artist could afford to sit on the fence.

“For us, one of the urgent questions of the anthropocene is whether we can afford to indulge in art for arts sake.

“To answer this question, we may have to examine what artistes, or their production have stood the rest of time, have made positive contributions to the emancipation of peoples across the world.

“At this juncture, we should ask ourselves some questions: What art piece most influenced you and your world view?

“Which musician stirred your conscience and demanded that you stand up to be counted?

“What do you learn when you reflect on the bronze artistic pieces of Benin Kingdom and why they were stolen?

“How best can you use your talent to communicate on the issues of our time – climate change, corruption, poverty, crime and violence?

“How can art build resilience in our time by propagating a counterculture?

“The artist must take a stand. The artiste must make a choice,” said Bassey, a renowned environmentalist.

In their presentations, Sophie Bouillon, Founder of StoryMi Academy and Damilola Onafuwa, Founder of StoryMaximal, underscored the need for Africans to tell their stories their own ways, but in more creative way than ever.

Bouillon for instance, regretted that Nigeria was under-covered; hence journalists and creative artists would need to tell more about Nigerian history and offer correct narrative.

She called on the participants to establish balance and common history for humanity.

To Onafuwa, the stories that needed to be told about Africa were bigger than what one man or an organisation could do alone.

“We actually need an army of storytellers and perspective is very important in telling the stories.

“Some of the reasons we need to tell our stories are one, it anchors us, meaning it tells about who we are and where we are from.

“Second, it drives us to be curious about our history, ancestors and culture. The more our stories we tell, the more we know about these.

“Lastly, it makes us accountable to our generations. It will help our children to learn about now,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference also featured exhibition of artworks and photography about environmental degradation and deforestation in the South South Nigeria. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
