President Bola Tinubu says the entertainment industry deserves more attention and recognition as it rekindles history and equips the younger generation with the knowledge of past events.

The President, who spoke at a stage production held in honour of his late mother, Hajiya Abibatu Mogaji, said the government would invest more in culture and arts to create a pathway for the future.

The play titled,: ‘Abibatu Mogaji: An Opera,’ was staged at the Conference Centre of the State House, on Tuesday, with the Vice-President, Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, and other dignitaries in attendance.

Tinubu’s mother passed away on June 15, 2013, at the age of 96, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service to family, community, the underprivileged, and the nation.

The President said he inherited his resilience, determination, and discipline from his mother, who was “tough and determined.

“My first restaurant was the best. My first toilet was the best. My first bedroom was her back. There is no way I could have come this far, and become this old without her care,’’ Tinubu said.

The President thanked the Executive Producer of the play, Mr Ola Awakan and the Director, Dr Ahmed Yerima for scripting and directing a play to immortalise his mother.

Tinubu commended the “thoroughly researched’’ play, which reflected his mother’s moments on earth.

“I could see that they know her very well. She was tough. She was a disciplinarian. I can thank God for the gift I got from her.

“It was an enduring gift of character and determination. Never to give up,’’ the President stated.

He said his son, Seyi, and other family members would benefit from the production, noting that theatre conveyed lessons from history through re-enactment.

In his vote of thanks, the President’s son, Seyi thanked the managers and crew for putting up a brilliant performance to immortalise the late Iya-loja of Lagos.

Awakan thanked the President for the opportunity and support to stage the play at the Presidential Villa. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Fayemi tasks Nigerian authors on societal ills

By Joshua Olomu

Erelu Bisi Fayemi, a prolific writer and wife of  former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi,  has tasked Nigerian authors to use their works to address societal ills and advocate social change.

Fayemi made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  on the sideline of the June edition of the monthly “Reading and Writers Dialogue” in Abuja.

The “Reading and Writers Dialogue” is a flagship programme of the Abuja chapter of   Association of Nigerian Authors(ANA) that brings together authors, literary enthusiasts that discusses the works of a selected Guest Author.

NAN reports that the June edition of the dialogue, with the theme, “The Writer as an Advocate of Social and Political Change”, which was held on Saturday, featured Fayemi as the Guest Writer.

According to Fayemi, writers are driven by passion to make positive changes in societies, adding that authors work should be used as a tool to  advocate social and political change.

She, therefore, urged Nigerian writers not to keep mute in the midst of various challenges, such as economic hardship, bad leadership, insecurity, child abuse and domestic violence.

“Everyone, who feels inspired to write, regardless of their age, where they are positioned, what platform they occupy, should continue to do so because we all have something to say.

“Those of us who are advocating a better world, for change, for a more inclusive society, sometimes we feel that this change takes a long time for people to have, and we become discouraged.

“We find ourselves writing the same thing over and over again; writing about poverty, writing about gender and sexual-based violence, writing about the lack of education opportunities for the girl child.

“We write about how we are all victims when it comes to having a society that is uneven and unequal, and writing about how our leaders need to do better, and  sometimes we get tired.

“That is why it is as if some people just keep quiet and do not  want to write anymore, and my response to that is, we need to write anyway because keeping quiet is not an option.

“Silence  is exactly what some people are counting on, that the change we are seeking for does not happen,” she said.

Some of Fayemi’s books discussed at the event included ‘Loud Whispers’; ‘Where is Your Wrapper’; ‘A Tray of Locust Beans’ and ‘Demand  and Supply’.

Earlier in his speech, Chukwudi  Eze, Chairman ANA Abuja, lauded Fayemi for using her writings to advocate equal society, promote women’s right and hold leaders accountable.

He urged both young and seasoned authors to look beyond monetary gains and use their writings to advocate fair and better society for all Nigerians.

“Erelu is not only a trailblazer in advocacy and activism, but also a prolific writer, with a collection of notable publications that amplify the voices of marginalised communities.

“As we go into discussions inspired by her remarkable career and literary legacy, let us be reminded of the  responsibilities we bear as writers to advocate for positive change in our society.

“Through our stories, poems and essays, we have the capacity to inspire, challenge and mobilise for a better tomorrow, “ he said.

Also, Prof. Tanure Ojaide, who chaired the  discussion panel, said: “Writers are people who want to leave the world better than they met it.

“It is therefore important that both young and established writers use their works  to advocate for societal change.”

In his goodwill message, Ekiti  State Gov. Biodun Oyebanji, lauded the leadership of ANA Abuja for the initiative and urged  Nigerian authors to always use their works to promote positive change.

NAN reports that the event featured spoken word , songs, poetry and other presentations by students, and the highpoint was the presentation of awards to young authors. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

By Taiye Olayemi
Mr Paul Usoro, Chairman, Board of Directors, Access Bank Plc, has advised Nigerian youths to focus on creativity and skills acquisition rather than seeking shortcuts to wealth creation.
Usoro gave the advice during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Life In My City Art Festival (LIMCAF), held in Lagos on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme featured exhibition of  about 106 artworks by up-and-coming artists from across the nation.
The festival has the theme “Humanism”, which the artists depicted in their works.
Usoro, who was the special guest of honour, said knowledge and skills acquired could be easily converted to wealth by being hardworking.
He urged the youth not to lose hope in spite the economic hardship but remain hardworking and creative.
He advised them to be committed to utilising their brains positively.
“I will like to advise Nigerian youths not to lose hope; don’t look for shortcuts; all you really need to do is to use your brains.
“Even as artists, you can be successful. Make yourselves knowledgeable and skillful.
“I am impressed with the works these young people have created here.
”I wish the organisers can project it to a larger audience so that it can inspire our leaders to formulate policies that will make life much better and give the young people hope,” he said.
Also, Kelvin Ejiofor, Executive Director, LIMCAF, said that at the end of the programme on June 22, the exhibitor of the best artwork would win N1 million.
Ejiofor said that LIMCAF aimed at encouraging creativity and empowering aspiring young artists , including those with disabilities.
“LIMCAF, in its 17th edition recorded remarkable impact of convincing people that arts was no longer an occupation not to be proud of.
“It is my main source of joy helping the young people to find their feet in their chosen profession, giving them opportunity to showcase their works,” he said.
For Jekami Adetiloye, one of the Jury, said the exhibition is  a clarion call to every Nigerian to be humane, regardless of the happenings in the society.
“There seems to be the absence of humanity in the society because of the current economic hardship in the country, hence the choice of the theme.
“The artists who have exhibited their works are suggesting ways government can solve problems as well as sensitising Nigerians on the need to show kindness and compassion to others.
“This exhibition has seen our youths solving the problem of unemployment as they become relentless, hardworking and creative to have come up with unique perspectives to things happening in the society.
“The youths are also now interested in documentation which has been a great challenge,” he said.
One of the artists, Praise Edward, who described herself as a digital artist and and a graphic designer, said her work titled “Strong Together” exposed the chaotic experience of women who have been marginalised.
“So, I tried to picture these women coming together to build hope by way of uniting, sharing their experiences and creating better lives for themselves,” she said. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

The season two of ‘Beyond the Veil’, a TV series that depicts everyday life of northern Nigerian women, has premiered in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that filmmakers, industry stakeholders, as well as the cast and crew of the film, were present at the screening on Friday night in Abuja.

“Beyond the Veil” brings to the fore everyday life of liberal Northern Nigerian women, highlighting social issues such as polygamy, drug abuse, gender based violence, forbidden relationships and unstable family dynamics.

The story follows the lives of five resilient northern Nigerian women as they navigate the ups and downs of modern life, careers, friendships, romances and the occasional clash of cultures.

The series, which showcase the richness and diversity of the northern culture, follows the lives of five women living in Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja as they navigate work, love, family and friendship.

The star-studded ‘Beyond the Veil’ is created by award-winning filmmaker Nadine Ibrahim and Sifa Asani- Gowon and is produced by Naila Media.

The film directed by Ibrahim features seasoned stars including ace actress Jemima Osunde, Maryam Booth, Norah Ego, Ummi Ahmed, Ame Aiyejina and Rikadawa Mohammed.

Others include Blessing Uzoro, Caleb Richards, Sani Muazu, Nadia Dutch, Andrew Bunting, Yakubu Mohammed and Temitope Olowoniyan, among others.

The series Director told NAN on the sideline that the project represents an opportunity to showcase a different version of the Northern Nigerian woman.

“Beyond the Veil” is a show inspired by the urge to depict Northern Nigerian women in a new and liberating way; one that is bold, empowered, and unapologetically authentic.

“It is about us sharing a fresh narrative and show the world that a northern woman comes in different spaces.

“The story follows the lives of five young women living in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria and the show builds a refreshing narrative around them but does not shy away from exploring the realities they face.

“All the women face ongoing challenges, some of which are layered and continued from the first season, many of which reach a climax and achieve some closure.

“The recurring themes of friendship, love, healing, and even pain remain in it, and they must push past and grow through all these, making choices that hurt and step bravely into the unknown.

“As a director, this project marks a significant milestone in my creative journey and it has allowed me to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and evolve artistically and personally,” she said

Also, the co-creator of the show, Asani- Gowon said the ‘Beyond the Veil’ story was well accepted by Nigerians as it reflected realities Nigerian women face.

“For the first season, the overall reactions were really good, although I was a little nervous about it, because I did not know how people would take it.

“However, the overall response was so great, and I think that made it even more positive for me, especially the overall northern Nigeria response to the show and now we are unveiling season two,” she said.

Ishaya Bako, Executive Producer of the film, said the story was a clear reflection of everyday realities that women have to cope with in this part of the world.

Bako, renowned for directing award-winning documentaries like “Fueling Poverty”, “Silent Tears,” and “UP NEPA” said the series was a continuous story.

“Our culture in Nigeria is very vast and rich so we should always tell stories that are vibrant and diverse to reflect issues that affect us,” he said.

NAN reports that the first season of ‘Beyond the Veil’ was released on Amazon’s Prime Video in March 2023. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
