Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Tuesday succumbed to a disappointing 1-1 draw against the Warriors of Zimbabwe in Matchday 6 World Cup Qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
A last-minute goal from Tawanda Chirewa denied Nigeria a much-needed victory as the Warriors held the Super Eagles in their Group C World Cup qualifying encounter.
Victor Osimhen had put Nigeria ahead in the 73rd minute with a well-placed header from Ola Aina’s cross.
The Super Eagles appeared to be heading for three points until Chirewa struck in the 90th minute, slipping past defenders and toe-poking the ball under goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
The match, played in front of a packed crowd at the ‘nest of champions,’ saw Nigeria dominate possession and create several chances.
Tolu Arokodare, who replaced Samuel Chukwueze in the 59th minute, was involved in the opener.
He held up play before passing to Aina, whose precise delivery found Osimhen at the far post.
Nigeria had multiple opportunities to extend their lead but were wasteful in front of goal.
In the 83rd minute, Wilfred Ndidi missed a clear chance after being played in by Moses Simon, skewing his shot wide.
Moments later, Osimhen was substituted due to cramp, with Victor Boniface coming on.
Zimbabwe nearly equalised in the 76th minute, when Walter Musona’s effort struck the underside of the crossbar after a mix-up between Nwabali and his defenders.
The visitors eventually found their goal in stoppage time through Chirewa, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to earn Zimbabwe a crucial point as the Eagles were left to rue their missed opportunities.
The result leaves Nigeria in third place in Group C, as Lesotho’s late equaliser against Rwanda meant the Super Eagles missed the chance to move up to second.
Nigeria’s next fixture will be a crucial opportunity to regain momentum as they continue their horrendous World Cup qualifying campaign.
The Eagles will resume their World Cup qualifying campaign on Sept. 1, when they host Amavubis of Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in a Matchday 7 encounter.
They will then travel to take on log leaders South Africa on Sept. 8 on Matchday 8.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
Team Captain William Ekong says the Super Eagles are focused on getting the much needed win in their 2026 World Cup Qualifying Match Day Six encounter against the Warriors of Zimbabwe.
The Super Eagles are expected to rise to nine points and be fully back into contention for a world cup ticket after Tuesday’s encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Ekong reiterated on Monday that the three-time African champions will seek to control the game the way they did in the encounter with Rwanda in Kigali on Friday.
He told newsmen that the team would work hard to get the goals that would give them the three points and fully establish them as one of the contenders for the ticket.
“We are looking forward to a win. The three points are important to us. At this stage, we cannot afford to drop any more points.
“Our aim is to take it one match at a time, collect three points here and there and hope fervently that these will be enough to get us the ticket.”
Without a win in their first four games of the series, Nigeria languished in fifth place in the six-team group C and remained in a perilous situation.
However, Friday’s robust win over Rwanda in Kigali threw them up as a proposition for the ticket to the finals.
Nigeria, with six points, moved up to fourth position, while Zimbabwe, on three, prop up the table, and will seek to increase their haul in Tuesday’s encounter.
The Warriors’ 45-man contingent, led by the ZIFA Vice President, Kennedy Ndebele, landed at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo on Friday afternoon.
This was about an hour after the arrival of the Super Eagles’ contingent from Kigali.
While the Warriors trained at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday morning, the Super Eagles trained at the same venue in the evening.
The team training was observed by some members of the NFF Executive Committee, the General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, SSA to Mr President, Anthony Adeboye.
Others were: the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey, former NFF General Secretary Musa Amadu and some officials of the NSC and the NFF.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that world football-governing body, FIFA has appointed Eritrean official Teklu Mogos Tsegay as referee for the match.
Tsegay’s compatriots would serve as assistant referee 1, assistant referee 2 and fourth official.
Ghanaian Prosper Harrison Addo will be the commissioner while Paulin Ilboudo from Burkina Faso will serve as referee assessor.
Leaders South Africa, on 10 points, square up to second-placed Benin Republic, on eight points, at the Stade Félix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan in a match starting simultaneously with that of Uyo.
Lesotho, now in fifth place following their defeat by South Africa on Friday, will tackle Rwanda’s Amavubi at Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium in the last match of group C. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
Corporate partners of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have pledged to provide incentives for the Super Eagles to go all out for the three points against Zimbabwe.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles will host the Warriors of Zimbabwe in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Matchday 6 Qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, said Nigerian Breweries, through their brands Goldberg, Life Continental and Zagg Energy drink are sponsoring the Man-of-the-match award for the sum of one million naira.
“The dummy cheque will be presented to the winner right on the pitch immediately after the final whistle.
“On their part, Carloha, official automobile company of the NFF and the National Teams, will sponsor the Chery Most Valuable Player award, also for the sum of one million naira.
“The dummy cheque for the amount will equally be presented to the winner on the pitch after the match,’’ he said.
Olajire said that sports journalists attending Tuesday’s match will be saddled with the task of picking the Man-of-the-match as well as the Most Valuable Player.
He added that the NFF would be giving out 500 jerseys ahead of the encounter, while match tickets would be sold on Tuesday.
He quoted the General Secretary of NFF, Mohammed Sanusi, as saying that the first 500 persons to buy match tickets for Tuesday’s match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo would get a Super Eagles’ home jersey.
“We are calling on Nigerians to come out in large numbers to support the Super Eagles on Tuesday.
“The team needs the support. When we played Rwanda in Kigali on Friday, the Rwandans filled up the Amahoro Stadium to its full capacity. Let our people also come out in throngs and cheer the Eagles.
“We are also appealing to fans to come to the stadium in Nigerian colours. Let us fill up the stadium in green and white colours, and drum and dance to support the team.
“The NFF has also confirmed that match tickets will be available for sale on match day, with the VIP tickets going for N3000 and the regular seats for the sum of N1000 each,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
Nigeria’s Super Eagles Captain, William Troost-Ekong, has lavished praise on Victor Osimhen, ranking him among the world’s top attackers alongside teammate Ademola Lookman.
Speaking in Kigali, Troost-Ekong singled out Osimhen’s impressive performance, which saw him score a brace in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Rwanda.
While acknowledging Osimhen’s outstanding display, Troost-Ekong emphasised the collective effort that led to the team’s success.
He said, “It is not about individual performances.
“The win against Rwanda was a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication. Everyone played their part, and it is this unity that will drive us forward.”
He said it was important also to see players like Tolu Arokodare making his debut from the bench and applauded Alhassan Yusuf who Troost-Ekong said was played out of position.
Troost-Ekong also congratulated Eric Chelle for his first win, adding that “the game was not easy.”
“We try to understand what the coach wants from us. We have only had two training sessions and lots of video sessions too.
“Today’s win is a glimpse of what we should expect under Coach Eric Chelle,” Troost-Ekong said.
He attributed the highlight of his career to being part of the team over the past decade, during which he had the privilege of learning from numerous captains.
These experiences, he noted, have greatly facilitated his role in coordinating the team, allowing him to create an environment where new players can thrive and express themselves freely. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mrs Okla Joab, a teacher in Gombe State, struggled to make ends meet with her meager salary, barely sustaining herself and her two children each month.
However, her life took a dramatic turn when she embraced the agribusiness initiative introduced by the Japanese Nigerian-based Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), a Non-Governmental Government Organisation (NGO), paving way to her financial independence.
In Gombe State, many women, especially widows, are most times traditionally confined to being full-time housewives, relying heavily on their spouses for financial support.
This dependence often renders them helpless, leaving them to live from hand to mouth. The situation is exacerbated by cultural norms that discourage women from engaging in meaningful economic activities.
Disturbingly, statistics reveal that approximately 59.3 per cent of women in these communities have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, largely due to their economic dependence on their spouses.
For widows, the situation becomes even more dire. Widowhood in these communities is often accompanied by maltreatment, discrimination, stigma, and economic hardship, leading to emotional instability, socio-economic instability, and psychological trauma.
However, SAA has been working to empower women in these communities, training them on new farming techniques, post-harvest preservation and marketing strategies among others.
This initiative has enabled women like Joab to break free from their financial dependence and achieve economic liberation through their ability to effectively cultivate their farms, courageously manage and market their farm produce, termed agribusiness.
Mrs Okla Joab, has broken free from poverty to financial independence.
The Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) has made significant strides in enhancing farmers’ access to essential inputs and enterprise skills, thereby improving livelihoods and contributing to food security in the region.
By empowering women in agribusiness, SAA is effectively dismantling the cultural and economic barriers that have long hindered their progress.
In a telephone interview with NAN, SAA’s Communication officer, Mr Moses Nongoatse, said the major objectives of the organisation’s work was to raise the crop management skills of front-line extension staff and smallholder farmers including the women farmers in order to increase their proficiency in crop production and productivity.
According to him, Nigeria is among the four focal countries, which include, Ethiopia, Mali, and Uganda, SAA is implementing field-based programmes that encompass the food system from production, post- harvest handling, and agro-processing, to marketing and consumption.
“Thousands of demonstration plots (also called Management Training Plots, were established with participating these farmers in the diffusion of improved wheat, maize, rice, cowpea, soybean, groundnut, millet, sorghum, and sesame cassava technologies.”
“We are currently working in Gombe, where many of the beneficiaries are widows, who have committed themselves, braced up and formed smallholders groups on cultivation, processing, preservation an marketing strategies which is the agribusiness aspect to become financially independent.
“Aside the training, SAA assist them to procure improved seedlings and farm inputs and more especially, help with their post harvest produce to avoid waste,” he said.
Women, widows trainees from Okauna and Dadin-Kowa communities in Kwami LGA, Gombe State.
For women like Joab, SAA’s intervention has been a game-changer.
A mother of two, Joab lost her husband 12 years ago and struggled to make ends meet on her meager teacher’s salary. However, with SAA’s support, she has been able to break free from financial dependence and build a more secure future for herself and her children.
Joab’s life took a dramatic turn when she embraced agribusiness, introduced to her community by the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA).
Living in the Daban Fulani community, Kwami Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State, Joab recounts how SAA’s intervention brought a fresh breath of life to her and her household.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Joab shared her inspiring story.
“When SAA arrived in our community, the village head invited everyone to listen to their presentation. Many women, including myself, showed interest and underwent training in various aspects of farming.”
Joab’s decision to embark on agribusiness marked a turning point in her life.
“Today, members of my group are financially stable. I encourage other women in our community and neighbouring villages to seize this opportunity and embrace agribusiness,” she advised.
According to her, agribusiness has helped her achieve financial independence, food sufficiency for her and has boosts food security for the communities.
Joab had been struggling to make ends meet since her husband’s passing 12 years ago. In spite of been a teacher, her salary barely covered her household expenses.
However, in 2023, the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) arrived in her community, offering support and agricultural extension services. The NGO provided inputs and encouraged women to venture into agribusiness.
Joab seized this opportunity and has since seen a significant improvement in her life. “We were taught how to add value to our produce,” she explained.
“I now process agricultural produce, sell it, and make a good income. I can meet my children’s needs without delay.”
The SAA initiative also enabled Joab and other women in her community to form an Multi Purpose Cooperative Society, which has accumulated over N200,000 in less than a year. The cooperative provides loans to empower other women to start their own agribusinesses.
Joab noted that many women in her community were now supporting their households and earning respect from their families.
“Don’t sit at home doing nothing,” she advised. “You can buy produce, process it at home, and sell it. You’ll make money and won’t need to ask your spouse for petty cash.”
Mrs. Marline Molta, Coordinator of the Kauna Women Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society in Gombe State, corroborated Joab’s testimony.
“We have different registered groups with relevant government agencies,” she explained.
“I coordinate the cooperative society groups in the state, and I also have my own group of 30 women who jointly own a cooperative farm,” she said.
Molta highlighted the challenges they faced, including inadequate funding, limited access to improved seedlings and inputs, and unavailability of large acres of farmland for lease.
She also noted that some women were restricted from participating due to religious reasons.
Mrs Altine Kiliyobas, another beneficiary, praised SAA’s intervention for exposing them to best agronomic practices, which significantly improved their yields.
She explained that SAA had trained and distributed improved seeds to women farmers in Yateren community, Shongom LGA.
” We were also taught preservation techniques to minimise post-harvest losses,” she said.
Farmers in Billiri and Shongom LGAs expressed gratitude for SAA’s intervention.
Mr Yila Sukar, District Head of Popandi Tal in Billiri LGA, described the initiative as a game-changer in the agriculture sector.
Ignatius Alhaji, a farmer, reported a 200 per cent increase in his maize and soybean harvest after adopting the new farming methods.
Barnabas Malle, Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Gombe, acknowledged the significant impact of the NGO’s intervention on women’s involvement and improvement in farming activities.
“The training and new farming techniques have boosted crop yields and farmer income, changing the narrative in terms of productivity and income generation for farmers,” he said.
Professor Daniel Osasogie, an agronomy expert at Ambrose Ali University in Ekpoma, Edo, commended the NGO’s impactful work in transforming the lives of women and widows in the agriculture sector.
In a telephone interview, Osasogie urged the government to support farmers, particularly vulnerable women and widows, in overcoming their challenges.
“To ensure the sustainability of these projects, the government must address the key obstacles, including religious restrictions, limited access to farmland, funding, and availability of improved seedlings,” he emphasised.(NANFeatures)

He said that the management of the league would ensure that its objective of getting the best legs from the grassroots was actualised.
He thanked the Ministry of Sports Development for endorsing the upcoming N-Youth League.
Adakosa also expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and the Federal Capital Territory Football Association (FCT-FA), for their support.
He said the endorsement by the football bodies was a proof that the sports administrators want the best for the country’s football from the grassroots level.

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have qualified for the semi-finals of the ongoing WAFU Zone B Under-17 Championship after defeating Togo 3-0 in Accra, Ghana.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Eaglets were second in group B of the WAFU B U-17 Championship going into their final game of the round.
NAN recalls that the game was initially scheduled for Wednesday evening, but was postponed to Thursday morning due to a heavy downpour which got the pitch soaked.
NAN reports that Abdulmuiz Adeleke opened the scoring after an impressive attack, with Abdulmuiz Oladimeji supplying the assist.
The Golden Eaglets after scoring the goal, kept on with their pressure to increase the tally.
Fortunately for the Eaglets again, in the 35th minute, Rapha Adams scored the second goal through a header after a cross from Simon Cletus.
The Eaglets netted their third goal in the 57th minute of the match, the through Adeleke.
Adeleke, however, missed an opportunity of increasing the tally to four in the 68th minute after they won a penalty following a handball in Togo’s area.
With the outcome of today’s match, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will now play in the semi-finals of the Championship, where they will meet Ivory Coast who played a goalless draw against Burkina Faso. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
Second-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane eased Liverpool into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig at the Puskas Arena on Wednesday.
The win saw the Reds completed a 4-0 aggregate victory over their German opponents.
Liverpool, leading 2-0 from the first-leg yet struggling in the Premier League after six straight home defeats, had several chances to extend their advantage in the first half but lacked sharpness in front of goal.
Both legs of the last-16 tie were played in the Hungarian capital due to Germany’s COVID-19 related travel restrictions.
While it was an unusual ‘home’ game for Liverpool, there was a more familiar look to the 2019 Champions League winners’ lineup with Brazilian Fabinho back in a midfield role.
Mane had an early chance but blasted over from a promising position but Leipzig knew one goal for them could set the nerves jangling for Juergen Klopp’s side.
Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker did well to smother a shot from Dani Olmo in the 11th minute while at the other end Diogo Jota saw a header tipped over the bar by Leipzig keeper Peter Gulacsi.
Gulacsi then did well again to keep out a Salah shot after the Egyptian had been set free by a long ball forward from Thiago Alcantara.
The Germans continued to ask questions though with Emil Forsberg shooting wide from inside the box in the 33rd minute but Liverpool should have had the lead before the break.
Gulacsi parried another Jota effort and then on the stroke of halftime the Portuguese forward wasted a great chance when the ball fell to him at the back post, after poor defending from Dayot Upamecano, but he fired into the side netting.
Liverpool finally broke through in the 70th minute when Jota fed Salah, who cut across the top of the penalty area before drilling into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later, Mane made it 2-0 on the night when he met a Divock Origi cross from the right with a first-time finish, steering the ball home with the outside of his foot.
“It is a big result for us,” said Salah.
“We came here after losing a few games in the Premier League.
The team is not in the best shape but we want to fight in the Champions League and also fight in the English Premier League and see what can happen.” (Reuters/NAN)
