Convener of Finance Conference, Mr Seyi Abiodun, has called on the Federal Government to increase women’s access to education and loans.

Abiodun made the call on Friday, at the commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) in Abuja.

The IWD 2024 dedicated to celebrate women around the globe is with the theme  “Inspire Inclusion – Invest in Her’’.

He said the conference was scheduled to inspire women to build wealth in spite of their level of income.

Abiodun said that lots of women were not courageous to take steps towards their financial freedom due to poor education.

“The government needs to concentrate on education, because culturally women have been disadvantaged, government should sponsor initiatives targeted at educating women.

“Some women still struggle with accessing loans and financial service providers need to educate people, especially women.

“Government can initiate that conversation and through it, partnerships can be built in the financial sector.

“It is not a bad thing for women to take loan, maybe to scale their businesses,’’ he said.

He explained that people could manage their finances by conscious savings.

He mentioned that three kinds of savings existed, which were consumption savings, emergency savings and investment savings.

“Consumption savings is a savings you are putting aside to spend, people need to enjoy their money because they work for it, but it has to be planned.

“Emergency savings is for unforeseen circumstances because we need to be ready in cases of emergency, while investment savings is what you put aside long term to build a richer life,’’ he said.

Mrs Ifeoluwa Adegoke, a Co-convener of the conference, said women have yet to achieve a lot towards their financial independence.

According to Adegoke, the conference will help building the confidence of women and enlighten them to be economically reliant.

She said “the government and private organisations need to inspire inclusion in women, because they are capable of holding managerial positions and leading.

“It is important that we build policies that will further empower women, because when women thrive, the nation will thrive.’’

Mrs Oluwatobi Ojediran, Chief Finance Officer, Transcorp Hotels Plc, said that some researches had revealed that empowering women was transformational to the society.

According to Ojediran, women should define what financial freedom means to them, embrace themselves and understand the dynamism that comes with being a woman.

“The competition is not with the man, it is with you (woman), device ways to become independent, gather the right learning, skills, relationships to enable you become financially independent.

“The best person to invest in a woman is the woman herself, because you need to understand what that investment means to you,’’ she said.

She called on the government to initiate policies that reduce inequality gaps, ensure consistent advocacy on women empowerment.

“Employers of labour, policy makers should understand the uniqueness that comes with a man and a woman, that should be understood while making decisions to bridge gender gap,’ she said.(NAN)www.nannews.ng

2024 IWD: FG assures impactful, accessible programmes for women

2024 IWD: FG assures impactful, accessible programmes for women

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD), President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerian women of impactful and accessible programmes that will improve their status and make life easy for them.

Tinubu gave the assurance at the launch of “Nigeria for Women Programme” in Abuja on Thursday, saying that the initiative which has other activities under it is aimed at empowering women economically, protecting their rights and promoting national development.

Represented at the programme launch by Mr George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Tinubu listed key components of the programme as; the P-BAT Cares for Women E-market portal, National Women Helpline, Naija save Nigeria Integrity/Transparency Brigade and Nigeria Be Informed National Broadcast Channel.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to address challenges affecting women and vulnerable groups in the country, adding that “we are not just committed to women in Abuja and other urban centres; we are committed to all the women in this country, particularly the most vulnerable who live in rural areas.

“Government needs to continually implement policies that improve the lives of our citizens and be deliberate about reducing the struggles of Nigerian women, while increasing the economic prosperity of our women.”

He called for increased collaboration with international partners, religious and traditional leaders, and support for reforms and policies that ensure national prosperity and gender inclusivity.

“We know what it takes to have a more gender-inclusive country; we need to make deliberate efforts to achieve this. It is time to empower our women.

“There is a limit, of course, to what the government can accomplish on its own. We extend a hand of partnership to stakeholders present and beyond, imploring them to join us in building our women and the nation.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, noted the economic challenges and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) women and children face in the country.

Kennedy-Ohanenye said that the programmes launched would address these challenges, fight for the rights of women, and promote their participation in all areas, particularly economically and politically.

She said rice, cassava and garri processing machines and other machines have been procured and distributed to some states as part of the programme, adding that “it is time to empower those that we have trained to reduce poverty.

“We are taking so many machines because we are interested in economic and sustainable ventures to reduce the suffering women go through.”

She thanked development partners, religious and traditional leaders, as well as other stakeholders for their support toward addressing the challenges.

Mrs Beatrice Nyong, the UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, stressed the need to invest in women to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She said “we are dedicated to promoting innovative solutions to address the economic challenges confronting women and girls in Nigeria.”

On his part, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, emphasised the need to improve access to girl-child education and recognise the role women play in economic and national development.

He said “we know the roles women play; without them, there will be no procreation. Women are the first teachers in the home, if you have a good person, check his background, and you will find out that he has a good mother.

“As royal fathers, we know that without mothers, there can’t be men and without men, there can’t be women. So, we are here to demonstrate our commitment to help the government succeed in its programmes.

“We are not anti-government but anti-social ills. We assure the government that we are 100 per cent ready. We have respect for women because they are the real wheels of development in the country.”

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, called for more realistic programmes for women, as well as ensuring strong follow-up and monitoring mechanisms to ensure success toward empowering women.

He said “this shouldn’t be a one-off; try to leave your comfort zones and go and see what people are going through from time to time outside Abuja. You have a lot of networks you can work with to ensure women are empowered.

“Traditional rulers are closer to the people. We face the good, the bad and the ugly all the time while we see politicians once every four years.

Let’s walk the talk and not just talk and talk. For some women, all they need is motivation, not just money and equipment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women’s rights movement, focusing on issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.

The global observance has “Invest in women: Accelerate progress” as the theme of the 2024 celebration. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

IWD: Experts seek accelerated investment in women for economic progress

Economic experts have advocated the need for focused and accelerated investments in women and their businesses to engender societal and economic progress.

They gave the advice at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) 2024 International Women’s Day event, themed, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” on Wednesday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event is to commemorate the global International Women’s Day Celebration which holds annually on March 8.

The President of NBCC, Mr Ray Atelly, said that more than ever, achieving gender parity and women’s well-being in all spheres of life was essential to build thriving economies and a healthy world.

Atelly said that the current major challenge was an alarming 360 billion dollars annual deficit for developing countries to address gender equality measures by 2030, under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He stated that in spite of these challenges, it had become important to advocate and invest in the human rights of women and each girl child.

This, he noted, helped in fostering a world where women can inhabit without violence, pressure, or prejudice and are saddled with governance, and administrative roles based on their performance.

“We encourage stakeholders to aid in advancing gender equality in our work and supporting female leaders in making a difference by enhancing their professional influence and impact in diverse sectors,” he said.

Mrs Tinuade Awe, Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NGX Regulation Ltd., stated that investing in women resources and opportunities would foster personal and economic advancement.

Awe stressed the need to ensure that financial assets were accessible to women.

She said that their economic participation and ownership of productive assets contributed significantly to development acceleration, poverty alleviation, inequality reduction, and in children’s well-being.

“Think not only about securing financial gains for them but also about recognising their rights, breaking down barriers that limit them, and creating a world where all women can thrive.

“By empowering women economically and providing opportunities for entrepreneurship and leadership, institutions can not only benefit from increased consumer spending but also contribute to gender equality and economic growth.

“Therefore, acknowledging and investing in women’s influence in consumer markets is essential for fostering a more inclusive and prosperous society,” she said.

Awe also emphasised the need to raise awareness, invest in data and research to inform action, set targets and metrics, challenge bias and stereotypes.

She said the country must be promoting gender lens investing, provide financial incentives such as tax breaks, credit guarantee wraps among others and support female entrepreneurs.

Mrs Adesuwa Okunbo-Rhodes, Founder, Aruwa Capital Management, stressed the need to take bold actions to close the funding gap for women-owned businesses.

She said the deep-seated unconscious bias over the performance of women when providing finance for their business must be addressed.

Okunbo-Rhodes stated the need to have more women in investment leading roles to overcome these biases.

“Beyond empowerment, women need to be invested in.

“Investing in women means you are generating 2.5 times in dollars more than when you do same in men.

“It has been observed that women pay back their loans, so, we need to improve their lives in underserved communities by better healthcare among other facilities,” she said.

Also, Mr Adeniyi Adekoya, Deputy Managing Director, Synerpet and Weston Ltd., stressed the importance of investing in women, helping them grow their career and rise to become all they could be instead of the unconscious bias that came with investing.

He added that gender equality must be part of the vision and mission statement of any organisational structure to drive home the message. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Odatiwa Women Wing, a support group for Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, has declared support for the governor to emerge as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the forthcoming governorship primary.

Mrs Olamide Falana, the convener of the group, made this known at the group’s inaugural meeting on Wednesday in Akure.

Falana, who is the Special Adviser to the governor on Gender, said that the group was rooting for the governor “to ensure continuity of his commendable efforts.”

According to her, the women believe in the quality of leadership shown by Ayedatiwa in the short time he has taken over the reigns of governance in the state.

The special adviser said that the essence of the meeting was to strategise on how to ensure massive victory for Aiyedatiwa, with the help of women across the 18 local government areas of the state.

“We are here today, the meeting of eminent women leaders across the 18 local government of the state to talk about our strategies for pushing, supporting and ensuring the overall victory of Ayedatiwa at the coming elections.

“We believe strongly in his leadership, we believe that he has all it takes to continue to lead us in the state, he has demonstrated unparalleled, unrivalled loyalty to his former principal.

“He has demonstrated unparalleled patience and calmness, he has shown the deep gentleness and leadership tenets that we need in a state like ours, he has shown his readiness to work and of course he’s already working,” she said.

Also speaking, Mrs Olayemi Ajonibode from Akoko North-West Local Government, said that Aiyedatiwa had the support of apex women leaders across the 18 local government of the state.

According to Ajonibode, the women want the continuity of the good work the governor has started.

“Women across the 18 Local Government Area of Ondo State are here in support of Aiyedatiwa for the governorship election that is coming.

“We are so sure, if you look at us, we’re the real women of Ondo State politics, so when we talk of apex women leaders, we are not the local government women leaders, we are the apex women leaders across the 18 Local Government.

“So, we are sure that he, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will get the ticket, we are sure he will win the elections, we just want continuity in Ondo State.

“We don’t want a situation where we will have another governor and the whole thing will scatter again. We want somebody that will get the ticket and continue the jobs that are already ongoing.

“Let’s take Lagos as an example, it’s because they have continuity in their government, that is why you see them moving, that is why you see them living better than other states.

“That is the purpose why we women said let’s come together and give this man a full support so we can have the continuity of the government,” she said.

Ajonibode also appealed to the governor for appointment of more women into his cabinet. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has cautioned parents against giving out their children as domestic helpers or for adoption.

Kennedy-Ohanenye gave the warning on Tuesday, at a new year party to celebrate school children and to encourage them on the path to greatness in Abuja.

According to her, the warning is necessary to avoid cases of child molestation, domestic abuse and other forms of abuse.

The minister said that the adoption of children should be within the confines of the law and closely monitored to ensure they were not molested or abused.

She added that parents had the duty of protecting children from all forms of abuse and harmfulness practices by providing safe spaces for their growth and development.

“The adoption of children is no more the way it used to be, narratives are being changed, you can’t adopt a Nigerian child and whisk the child away to overseas and do what you like.

“I urge parents, don’t have children you can’t train, these are some of the reasons these children are suffering.

“It is unfair and very bad that you have children you cannot train and subject them to so many sufferings,” she said.

According to the minister, some parents give out their children to help others but they don’t look out to know if the child is okay or not.

“These children are loved by Nigerians and we don’t want them to be treated anyhow anymore.

“So, even the teachers should take note, ask the child questions and report back because the teachers are already aware that when you maltreat a child, it is a crime.

“We have mobile courts to report those that have molest or defile these children,” she said.

On the issue of house helps, the minister emphasised that they must be of age and should not be maltreated under any circumstance.

Also, Rep Kafilat Ogbara, House Committee Chair on Women Affairs, noted that children were the future of every nation, so their role in nation building must be understood.

“As children, students and Nigerians, you also have a role to play in nation building.

“Don’t see yourselves as just children who enjoy life, sleep, wake up, eat, play and go to school. You have to start building yourselves as leaders.

“I urge you to remain prayerful, obedient and serious with your studies. Know that there is no achievement you cannot reach in this life.

She urged children not to  let anyone restrict them  to believing that there is a ‘no go area’ for them.

Also speaking, Asmau Muhammed-Ignamus, Gombe state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, stressed that the Child Rights Act would ensure their rights and dignity were protected.

According to her, Gombe state government has already adopted the Act to protect children in the state. (NAN)
