Pay fines to the banks, not FRSC personnel– Corps Marshal warns motorists

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has issued warning to motorists to pay their fines to designated banks and stop attempting to bribe its patrol operatives.

This is contained in a statement by the FRSC spokesman, Olusegun Ogungbemide on Tuesday in Abuja.

Mohammed also warned motorists not to entice them with financial benefits as well as other gratifications when arrested for violating traffic regulations.

The FRSC boss maintained that FRSC had a zero-tolerance policy for bribery and corruption.

He added that it was completely against the values, ethics and standard operating procedures of the Corps for its personnel to be given any form of gratification while on duty.

“As such, any motorist found attempting to bribe FRSC personnel will be arrested and prosecuted.

“This is in line with extant provisions in the Corps’ Establishment Act (2007), as the Corps does not, and will not tolerate any form of corruption whatsoever,” he said.

Mohammed said that the FRSC was an organisation that upholds the highest level of transparency in its operations.

He said that the Corps has had enough of motorists trying to circumvent the law by offering bribes to its personnel, against making payment for their fines.

He, however, advised motorists to comply with the law and pay their fines to designated banks which are the only legitimate way to settle fines.

“This is because all fines generated through patrol operations are paid into the Treasury Single Account, not into the pockets of individuals,” he maintained.

In the same vein, the Corps Marshal has also warned the staff against demanding bribes from motorists.

Mohammed admonished the public to report any operative seen requesting bribe from motorists because it was against the standard operating procedures for patrol operations.

He also revealed that the public could report such operatives through mail @ info@frsc.gov.ng, the FRSC Mobile Application, or the Flag-It anti corruption App.

“The public can also reach out through our social media handles: facebook.com/FRSCNigeria, x.com/FRSCNigeria, instagram.com/FRSCNigeria, youtube.com/FRSCNigeria.

“FRSC remains committed to upholding the law and maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

“The public is admonished to comply with all traffic regulations on movement of persons, animals and goods on Nigerian roads,” he said.

The FRSC boss, however, commended citizens that have regularly flagged the misconducts involving the operatives without resulting into violence. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

ActionAid wants support for men to embrace positive masculinity

ActionAid wants support for men to embrace positive masculinity

ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) on Tuesday stressed the need to support men in embracing positive masculinity to reduce domestic violence and ensure greater participation in parenting and household responsibilities.

The Country Director of ActionAid, Andrew Mamedu, made the call at the ongoing West African Convening Positive Masculinity and Ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) event.

The event held in Abuja, with the theme “Experience and Lessons in Applying Positive Masculinity in Addressing GBV in the Africa sub-region”, is in commemoration of the 2025 World Father’s Day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme is organised by AAN with the support of the Ford Foundation.

NAN also reports that the World Father’s Day is commemorated every third Sunday in June, and it’s a day set aside for honouring fathers, as well as fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in the society.

Mamedu explained that supporting men to embrace positive masculinity would make them emotionally healthier, stronger and more family oriented.

“Embracing positive masculinity is not just about gender justice, it’s about building happier homes, more resilient communities, and ultimately a more prosperous and peaceful Africa.

“This is because when men are free to express their full humanity, when they are not boxed in by destructive norms, the entire society benefits,” he said.

Mamedu added that the United Nations Women among other scholars have linked harmful masculinity to gender-based violence, school dropouts, depression and substance abuse.

According to him, the cultural and social norms in most African communities continue to encourage men and boys to display traits such as dominance, aggression, and emotional suppression.

“Although these traits are seen as a sign of strength, but the truth is that they frequently lead to insecurity, broken relationships, poor health and violence especially against women and girls.

“Africa rooted in peace, equity, and inclusive development cannot be built on the shaky foundation of harmful masculinities”.

Similarly, Dr Hussaini Abdu, Director of Pan-African and New Power Advocacy Office, frowned at the concept of masculinity and the prevailing conception that defined men as people who lack emotions, among others.

Abdu said that such perceptions have being promoting violence and undermining mental health of young people.

“We want to make people understand that masculinity is a constructed identity that though born as a boy, the traits are learnt through socialisation.

“So, it is important to unlearn these traits so as to become more sympathetic, engaging, expressive and less violent.

“There is need for a shift in the upbringing of children as they must be brought up in a manner that promotes mutual respect. They should share similar chores and responsibilities and be held accountable.

“When boys are taught that they are different and stronger than girls and can’t express emotions, and that they have to be aggressive and assertive, we differentiate them from girls.

“That is why we are experiencing a mental health crisis, substance abuse, and other social vices,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dr Bridget-Torbua Igbauke, the Director-General, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ethical Political Ideology Movement, says President Tinubu has demonstrated high level of boldness and ethical conduct in his political endeavour.

She said this in Abuja during the Movement’s inaugural news conference, adding that the group would, therefore, support the re-election of Tinubu as president in 2027.

She said Tinubu had demonstrated the desire and ability to lead the country aright as never seen in the history of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inauguration of the Movement was done in collaboration with another group, Good Leadership Support Organisation (GLSO).

She described Tinubu’s political ideology as a “safety net and a springboard” to help Nigerians reach greater heights in all their endeavours.

“There is nothing we cannot achieve when we set our minds to do it and do it together. The words of our great President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) are words of liberation and wisdom.

“Yesterday is history, today is action, and for our tomorrow, we have to join hands with our dear President in his Renewed Hope ethical political ideology and principles.

“The ethical political ideology and principles of our dear president is already breaking the negative status quo and redefining the paradigm of our economy for the better,’’ she said.

According to her, it is against this backdrop that the group, in collaboration GLSO is urging every Nigerian, home and abroad, to subscribe to Tinubu’s political ideology.

“The ethical political ideology and principles of our President is not a one-sided ideology.

“The President’s ideology has taken all the advantages of capitalism and socialism, bringing them to the centre of the political ideology spectrum and at the same time locking out the disadvantages of capitalism and socialism,” she said.

She drew comparison with Mr Tony Blair as British Prime Minister which, according to her recorded unquantifiable exponential growth and development both domestically and abroad.

“All we need to do, irrespective of our political party affiliation, is to walk to the fountain called the Ethical Political Ideology called the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Ethical Political Ideology and draw from it,’’ she said.

She added that under Tinubu’s administration Nigerians had experienced affordable education through NELFUND, affordable health care through health insurance and affordable medication.

Igbauke said the creation of regional development commissions, local government autonomy, stability in the oil and gas sector and creation of National Credit Guarantee Company (NCGC) were evidence of Tinubu’s management savvy.  (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

PENGASSAN demands transparent pump price system

PENGASSAN demands transparent pump price system

By Joan Nwagwu

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has urged the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to enforce a transparent pump pricing template.

President of the union, Mr Festus Osifo, made the call at a World News Conference in Abuja on Monday.

Osifo said the call became necessary seeing that petroleum marketers have continued to exploit Nigerians through inflated fuel prices even with the decrease in the price of crude oil.

According to him, at the time crude oil was being sold at 60 dollars per barrel, petrol pump prices remained high at between N850 and N900 per litre, leaving consumers at a loss.

“The unjustifiable pricing is due to NMDPRA not being able to carry out its oversight duties effectively.

“It is the function of the regulator to ensure that Nigerians are not exploited.

“So we call on NMDPRA to have a platform where they can publish what the price ranges should be.

“So, we call on them to be allowed to carry out that responsibility. We call on them to do everything possible to ensure that Nigerians are not exploited.

“If this trend continues, it means that if the crude price comes down to 50 dollars per barrel, we will not see appreciable gains,” he said.

He praised the federal government signing the Executive Order on the upstream oil and gas industry especially as it relates to the need for companies to reduce the cost of operations.

“One of the challenges affecting us today in the Nigerian oil and gas industry is that the amount upstream companies spend in protecting their facilities, both on land, in the sea, shallow waters, deep waters, and others, is quite prohibitive.

“For one installation, you have a minimum of three or four security vessels. You then have to pay for them on a daily basis.

“You pay for the crew on a daily basis. You have to fuel them on a daily basis. Whereas in other countries, it is not like that,” he lamented.

Osifo identified the above mentioned situation as one of the primary reasons international oil companies (IOCs) have been exiting Nigeria.

While speaking on the persistent failure of Nigeria’s refineries to operate effectively, he reiterated the call on the federal government to adopt PENGASSAN’s recommendations made 15 years ago.

According to him, the recommendations of the NLNG model, where government holds 49 per cent and private investors hold 51 per cent should be adopted.

“We all understand the politics that comes in when it comes to national assets management.

“That is why in the past 15 years or more, we have called on the government consistently to apply the NLNG model in the management of the refineries because the model works,” he said.

He also explained that the union had reached a resolution with Sterling Oil Company following disputes over expatriate staff hiring practices. (NAN)

President Bola Tinubu on Monday inaugurated the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6, pledging his administration’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure that directly improve citizens’ lives.

He described the water network as a transformative effort to guarantee safe, sustainable, and sufficient water for homes, institutions, and communities across the capital city.

“Water is life. It is not a luxury. It is a basic human right and a foundation for public health, urban development, and economic growth,” the President said.

He lauded the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) led by Nyesom Wike and all project stakeholders for their dedication to the project.

The president emphasised that the Renewed Hope Agenda focused on delivering tangible, people-centred projects that impacted the daily lives of Nigerians.

“This water infrastructure is not only a technical milestone, but a moral one, because it is about equity.

” It ensures that no part of Abuja is left behind in our national development agenda.

“When we speak of the Renewed Hope Agenda, we mean tangible, people-focused projects that improve the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians.

” Water to drink, to clean, to grow, to build; that is a real project. It’s a treasure that we always take for granted.

“We are not here today merely to lay the pipes.

” We are laying the groundwork for healthier families, stronger communities, and a more productive city,” he stated.

Tinubu thanked the international development partners, especially the Chinese government and CGC Nigeria Ltd., for their collaboration on the project.

“We are showing the world that partnership built on mutual respect and shared prosperity can deliver real impact,” he said.

The president urged residents to safeguard the infrastructure.

” As we commission this vital project, I urge all residents and stakeholders to protect this investment.

‘ Use the water wisely and work with the government to ensure sustainability,” he added.

Wike, on his part , thanked the president for his continued support and practical interest in developing the capital city.

“Mr President, on behalf of the residents and administration of the FCT, we sincerely appreciate and thank you for taking the time to be with us again.

” Today marks the fourth day of the commissioning programme, ” Wike said.

He recounted the president’s early inquiries into Abuja’s infrastructure after assuming office.

“I recall that when you came on board, you invited me and asked me one or two questions.

“One is, ‘Why is the mass transit train not working?’

” You said, ‘I want to ride on that train.’

“Secondly, you asked, ‘What is happening to the Abuja water supply?’

” You made it clear: ‘It’s not only rail infrastructure.

” We want the train to work and the water to be supplied to the city,” he said.

Wike explained that the project was initially awarded in 2017 for 470 million dollars under a tripartite financing arrangement involving the Chinese Government (85 per cent), Federal Government and FCT Administration (15 per cent).

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to extend water infrastructure to underserved communities.

“Last year when you (Mr President) visited China—luckily for us, I was part of the delegation.

” The FCT also signed an agreement with CGC to provide water to rural areas.

“We are almost done with procurement to give water to Bwari, Kuje, Karu, and other communities.

” So we are not only providing water to the city but also to the satellite towns,” said Wike.

He assured the president that future rural water projects would be delivered swiftly.

“It will not take years like this one.

” We believe that by next year, during your third anniversary, we’ll commission those satellite town projects where you provide water,” the minister stated.

He also praised the National Assembly for their support.

“Every day, we’ll make sure that people will see-those who want to see and those who don’t want to see.

” It’s not your fault—because they decided not to see,” he said.

Richard Dauda, Acting Executive Secretary of Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), said the new loops were designed to serve 50 districts across Phases Two, Three, and Four, including the FCT’s northern and southern development corridors.

“Of the planned 10 loops, Loops 3 and 4 are already operational, supplying water from four completed storage tanks.

“The Greater Abuja Water Supply Project involves the construction of additional pipeline networks—Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6, according to the city’s master plan,” he said.

He explained that the project included installing secondary trunk lines to ensure effective distribution to end users.

According to Dauda, 425 kilometres of ductile iron pipes, ranging from 200mm to 1500mm in diameter, are being laid, comprising 256 kilometres of main trunk lines and 169 kilometres of distribution lines.

The project also includes 1,670 appurtenances, such as valves and air release systems.

“Upon completion, the project would significantly improve access to potable water for residents of Abuja,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

International Breweries Plc (IBPLC), has called on young Nigerian entrepreneurs to take advantage of its 2025 Kickstart initiative, to increase their contributions to economic growth.

According to IBPLC, the initiative aligns with the fact that a youth-driven enterprise will shape Nigeria’s future.

Dr Peter Bamkole, Chairman, Advisory Board, International Breweries Foundation, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the company, made the call on Saturday in Lagos.

The Kickstart is the company’s corporate social investment programme, designed to identify, train, mentor and fund young Nigerian entrepreneurs, between the ages of 18 and 35.

The initiative targets priority sectors, driving growth and innovation, including retail, agriculture (rice, maize and sorghum) renewable energy, circular packaging, recycling and other viable micro and small-scale businesses.

Bamkole said the call for applications for Kickstart 2025, reaffirmed the company’s long-standing commitment to youth empowerment and sustainable economic development in the country.

“We believe Nigeria’s economic transformation lies with its young entrepreneurs and Kickstart continues to make a meaningful impact by reducing unemployment and promoting inclusive growth.

“We are looking for passionate, resilient individuals ready to grow their businesses, whether in agriculture, recycling, retail, or renewable energy.

“This is a chance to access the knowledge, network, and funding needed to succeed,” he said.

Mrs Temitope Oguntokun, Corporate Affairs and Regulatory Director, IBPLC, said the programme represented the company’s unwavering commitment to building a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in Nigeria.

Oguntokun said that by investing in the ideas and energy of the youth, the company was sowing seeds of long-term prosperity.

She noted that over the years, IBPLC had seen beneficiaries grow from small startups to employers of labour, hence the excitement to welcome the next generation of changemakers in 2025.

The corporate affairs director said the 2025 edition was structured as a comprehensive entrepreneurial journey from selection to receiving startup grants.

According to her, the process begins with a competitive application and screening phase, followed by virtual training in core entrepreneurship courses.

She said the training would be delivered in partnership with the Enterprise Development Centre of Pan-Atlantic University.

“Participants will then advance to an intensive business bootcamp, delivered with the support of the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

“The programme culminates in the Pitch-Fest, a pitching competition, where finalists will present their ideas and its sustainability to a panel of seasoned business experts for a chance to win grant funding and ongoing support.

“Beyond funding, kickstart offers mentorship opportunities and access to a vibrant alumni network, ensuring that participants have the tools, guidance and community needed to sustain and grow their businesses,” she said.

Oguntokun stated that applicants must be running a business, either registered or unregistered; operational for no more than three years, or have a strong, viable business idea that aligns with the programme’s focus sectors.

She said the programme also gave opportunities for persons living with disabilities to participate.

Oguntokun disclosed that Kickstart has trained more than 1,700 aspiring entrepreneurs, with 425 business owners who received seed capital and mentorship in the last 10 years. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
