SEC warns against investing in punisher coin

SEC warns against investing in punisher coin

179 total views today

By Taiye Olayemi

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cautioned Nigerians against investing in a cryptocurrency called Punisher Coin, also known by the symbol $PUN.

In a statement issued Sunday in Lagos, SEC said the presale was unauthorised and lacked regulatory approval, resembling a Ponzi scheme.

According to the statement, the promoters of $PUN are not registered to operate in any capacity within Nigeria’s capital market.

The commission said: “Our attention has been drawn to online promotions of an unauthorised presale for a cryptocurrency called PUNISHER COIN, also known as $PUN.

“Of particular concern is an article by Daily Trust E-Paper titled: ‘Cryptos to Buy: Why Punisher Coin Could Join Avalanche and Chainlink.’”

SEC clarified that Punisher Coin and its promoters are neither registered nor approved to promote, launch, trade, or solicit investment from the Nigerian public.

Preliminary investigations indicate Punisher Coin is a ‘meme coin’ — a type of digital asset often lacking tangible utility or a supporting project.

Further findings confirm $PUN is indeed a meme coin, typically without real-world value, purpose, or technical foundation backing its existence.

The value of such coins is usually driven by hype, social media trends, or promotional efforts by its creators and community.

This makes them vulnerable to ‘pump and dump’ schemes — fraudulent tactics used to inflate and then crash a coin’s market price.

In such schemes, promoters spread false hype, creating buying pressure, then sell off their holdings at the peak, leaving others with losses.

After the promoters sell and stop hyping, the coin’s value usually plummets, causing unsuspecting investors to lose money rapidly.

SEC noted these coins’ value is largely based on manipulation, not substance, with price swings driven by excitement and misleading claims.

The public is, therefore, strongly warned against participating in the presale of Punisher Coin, as any investment is entirely at one’s own risk.

The commission urges investors to verify the legitimacy of any digital asset, its promoters, and platforms before committing funds.

Verification can be done via SEC’s official portal:

As part of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festivities, the Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana, has taken significant steps to reinforce its partnerships with government authorities and host communities in Kogi.

The Plant Director, Nawabuddin Azad, said the company was scaling up its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts around its catchment areas to deepen these relationships.

Azad made this disclosure when he visited the Chairman of Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, Abdullahi Adamu.

The Plant Director said the company has executed several social projects as stipulated in the mutually agreed Community Development Agreement (CDA), adding that the company was sustaining the tempo.

According to him, the company is desirous of deepening its collaboration with the Local and the State Government to enable it to sustain its job creation effort and infrastructural development in the State.

“Our strategy focuses on creating sustainable livelihoods, while addressing the unique needs of each host community,” Azad said.

He commended the chairman for his numerous interventions, and for ensuring that peace prevails in the company’s catchment areas.

He said the cement company has contributed enormously to creating social and economic balance for Kogi and Nigeria.

In his response, Adamu described the Dangote Cement Plc at Obajana as a national treasure that must be protected through collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, most importantly, the host communities.

He urged the host communities to be peaceful and law abiding.

Meanwhile, Azad also paid a courtesy visit to Apata and Obajana Plant Communities.

He thanked the traditional rulers for their sustained support to the company, saying the relationship is mutually beneficial.

In his response, the Olu of Apata, Oba Fredrick Balogun, commended the Plant Director for his foresightedness and being very supportive.

The Bajana of Obajana, Idowu Isenibi thanked Azad for his numerous supports, pledging that his community would continue to be the Ambassador of the Dangote Cement.

A statement from the company said several social programmes have been executed in the past few years.

Some of the projects include: construction of multimillion Naira hospital at Iwaa, women empowerment programmes, scholarship schemes, solar empowerment programme and poultry empowerment programme.

Other projects include provision of tricycles, road construction, water supply, electrification, construction of blocks of classrooms, empowerment of corporative societies and farmer empowerment programme.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Obajana plant is the largest cement factory in Sub-Saharan Africa, and it remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrialisation.(NAN)

The 1991 Set of Government Secondary School (GSS) Ilorin Old Students’ Association has called on members and Nigerians, at large, to be peaceful and patriotic as Muslims celebrate this year’s Eid-El-Kabir.

The National Chairman of the association, Mr Moshood Sayi, gave the charge in his Sallah Message made available to newsmen on Saturday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the statement was titled: “Happy Eid-El-Kabir  to All Our GSS Ilorin 1991 Set.”

Sayi, who is an engineer and a staff of University of Ilorin, urged everyone to inculcate the practice of tolerance and sacrifice as exemplified in the Holy Book.

“On behalf of myself and the executives of GSS Ilorin 1991 Set, I am felicitating with all Muslims on Eid El Kabir celebration.

“While underscoring and imbibing the tenets of sacrifice exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ishmael, I implored all to inculcate the practice of tolerance, perseverance and sacrifice in strengthening peace, harmonious living and patriotism in the state and the country at large.

“I pray to Allah to continue to elevate us all in our respective places of work and businesses, and may we witness more years of the celebration on earth.” he said.

GSS Ilorin, which was established in 1914, was the oldest secondary school in the old northern Nigeria with a watchword: “No Struggle, No Success.” (NAN)

Nigeria’s Civil War my most difficult period in life — Gowon

166 total views today

By Angela Atabo

Former Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has described the Nigerian Civil War period (from 6 July 1967–15 January 1970) as the most difficult period of his life.

Gowon made this known on Saturday in Abuja after being honoured with a Life Time Integrity and Achievement Award at the 5th Convention of the Christian Men’s Fellowship, Abuja Anglican Diocese.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event had as its theme: “Men of Honour: Living with Integrity in a Culture of Deceit.”

Gowon explained that his decisions during the civil war were never driven by hatred, but by a difficult necessity to preserve national unity.

He urged people to always stand for the truth, and stressed the need for forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity across faiths and ethnicities.

“I always remember the civil war. It was the most difficult period of my life.

“It was not my choice, but I had to be there, and had to do what I did in order to keep this country together.

“It was never a hatred against any people, I can assure you,” he stated.

Reflecting on life after that period, the former Head of State stressed that his decisions had often been guided by prayers and a desire to act with integrity and compassion.

“As far as this heart is concerned, everything that I do, it is through prayers.

“I ask God to help me to do the right thing the way He thinks it should be done, with love and respect for all the people.

“That is why, at the end, what do we have to say? As they say: no victor, no vanquished,” he added.

Gowon also lauded the progress Nigeria has made since the civil war.

He called on all citizens to support government’s efforts to uphold peace, love, and mutual respect.

The Chairman of the occasion, former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by John-Kennedy Opara, former Executive Secretary, Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, congratulated the honourees for their consistency in living with integrity.

He said, “These men have touched lives, and God has used them in different ways to touch the nation.

“The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.”

Quoting Psalm 25:14, he called on men to live right and stand for integrity, regardless of the situation.

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, who presided over the convention, commended the honourees and urged Christians to uphold truth, integrity, and courage.

According to him, the theme for the programme is apt because there is need to encourage Christians to stand for the Lord right from their homes.

He also encouraged Christians to stand strong in the society, in their workplaces and in their businesses.

The Anglican Primate said that Nigeria was in need of men and women of honour and integrity, leaders willing to serve the people and not corruptly pile up wealth.

“This is because when the home is strong, the church will be, and the society also. So, we want to encourage people to be unashamedly Christians.

“They owe nobody any apology for doing the right thing; many good people are not taking their stand, and that is why evil men thrive.

“They should stand unashamedly for the right, for the truth and also fight for that which is good, and I believe that with time, the light will shine brighter and brighter,” he said.

Quoting Psalm 15: 1-5, he stressed that God was still in search of men and women of honour and integrity, who are defined by what he described as the “four Hs”.

He listed the four attributes to include the Heart, Head, Habit, and Humility.

Mr Isaac Chukwudi, President, Christian Men’s Fellowship, Abuja Diocese, said the choice of the event’s theme was informed by the prevalence of bankruptcy of integrity in the country.

“Integrity is so scarce, both at home and in government, and that was why we chose the theme to instil in men the spirit of the living well.

“We need to build integrity from the home, and these are the men to speak to where the leaders will emerge from to better the situation in Nigeria,” he said.

NAN reports that two other nonagenarians were also honoured in recognition of their exemplary service to the church, the nation, and humanity.

They are Dr Christopher Kolade, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, and Owelle Gilbert Chikelu, a former Minister of Establishment and Chairman, Guaranty Trust Bank. NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned against the use of social media accounts by unscrupulous individuals spreading false information about its officials.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, issued the warning in Abuja following the creation of a fake Facebook account in the name of Permanent Secretary, Amb. Dunoma Ahmed.

Ebienfa said, “This fraudulent account is being used to spread false information, promise contracts, solicit help, and offer enticing rewards to unsuspecting members of the public.

“The Ministry firmly disassociates itself from this impersonation and urges the public to disregard any messages from the fake account, which is not an official channel.

“It is important to clarify that the Permanent Secretary does not operate or own any social media account.”

He advised the public not to engage with individuals or groups behind such fraudulent schemes, as they are deceptive and harmful.

According to him, the ministry is working closely with security agencies and Meta, Facebook’s parent company, to investigate and shut down the fake account.

Ebienfa reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and protecting citizens from fraudulent activities across all platforms. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

BPP, CIPS sign MoU to strengthen partnership on procurement practice

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPE) and Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their partnership on procurement practices.

Dr Adebowale Adedokun Director-General, BPE, made this known in a statement issued by Zira Nagga, Head of Public Relations at BPP in Abuja.

Adedokun, who received a delegation from the CIPS, UK, African Region and Asia Pacific, said the MoU was to deepen the existing partnership with CIPS- a lead in global procurement practice and a catalyst to support a national procurement practice in Nigeria.

According to him, knowledge of procurement processes is essential to navigating problems of life, as procurement practice is not only centred on awards of contracts but broader and wider in its practice.

Adedokun emphasised his vision and agenda to aid Nigeria’s development through proper training, knowledge, and best procurement practices.

“This will transform Nigeria into the “Dubai of Africa” whereby all countries will be represented in Nigeria, thereby growing our industries and local content.

“All these could be achieved by collaborating with different professional bodies, of which Nigeria needs support from CIPS for rightful procurement practice.”

The D-G highlighted several bureau projects, including the Sustainable Procurement Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) Project, which had positioned Nigeria in the global arena and created a significant impact worldwide.

Adedokun reiterated the importance of technology.

However, he said without adequate human development, it would become useless.

“Therefore, there should be a focus on human capacity development for officers to be trained and provided with the necessary certification that will enable them to compete globally.”

The D-G stated that BPP was promoting a career in procurement in Nigeria, with no fewer than 8,000 officers set to benefit from the partnership with CIPS.

“BPP as a regulatory body will institute proper regulatory framework to regulate procurement ethics, good governance and procurement practice in Nigeria, and I urge everyone to comply.”

Adedokun said the Price Intelligent Unit (PIU) and External Cooperation Unit (ECU) of the bureau would drive the MoU.

“The units would tap from the resources of CIPS on how prices are done in terms of consultancy, goods, works and services, to eliminate variations in prices.

“The MoU brings both entities together to uphold the principles of good procurement practices and reaffirms the shared commitment to building a stronger and prosperous Nigeria.”

In response, Ben Farrel, CEO of  CIPS, UK, commended the Nigerian Government for the recent impact Nigeria made on the world.

Farrel said he believed that procurement and supply chain professions must take centre stage and lead from the frontline.

He said that CIPS brought the best standard in terms of ethical procurement practices, and served as a benchmark around the world.

Farrel highlighted CIPS’s commitment to establishing a stronger presence in Nigeria to achieve the goals of capacity building and align with the national strategic vision for procurement.

“More people need skills in procurement because it is a profession that is relevant around the world and it is important for Africa and the world to strive towards development.

“We are determined to move the procurement and supply chain profession and CIPS forward into a future where they are global leaders, shaping the future of the planet,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu pledges more spending on enduring infrastructure

By Salif Atojoko

President Bola Tinubu says more funds would be committed to infrastructure development across the country.

The president said this while inaugurating the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road at the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Plant in Lagos, Mr Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, said.

The president said he was happy that the Deep Sea Port he initiated as governor of Lagos State had become a huge success.

“Users save vast amounts of money using this port because they no longer need to trans-ship their goods.

“I commend the quality of the access road done by Messrs Dangote Industries Limited on our Tax Credit Road programme and the subcontractor, Messrs Hitech Construction Company Limited,” Tinubu said.

He commended the Federal Ministry of Works, Hitech Construction Company Limited, Dangote Industries Limited, BUA and all contractors involved in the country’s road development.

The president said his administration was committed to building enduring infrastructure nationwide.

He dismissed critics of the government’s legacy projects for being ignorant about how the government awarded the legacy roads to contractors.

“It is necessary to note that the Federal Executive Council approved our legacy projects to be procured, awarded and constructed in sections.

“The completed 30 km segment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is part of the 47.7 km, six-lane Section I contract, not a wholesale 750 km contract, as some have suggested.

“No contractor has been awarded the entire corridor.

“Our approach has been systematic, transparent, and section-based.

“The Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway envisioned 47 years ago under the Shagari administration, is another legacy project we have revived,” said Tinubu.

According to him, this corridor – spanning Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos – holds immense potential for agriculture, trade, and industrialisation.

“It connects over 58 dams, vast arable farmlands, and trade routes to our West African neighbours and offers great promise for windmill energy generation.

“Construction is well underway.

“In Kebbi, we have completed over 10 km of the 258 km three-lane carriageway, and today we flag off the second carriageway.

“This section is the longest in all our Legacy Projects.

“In Sokoto, work has begun on the 120 km 2single-carriageway by three lanes from Illela.

“I understand that over 10km of this project is already completed.

“Today, we shall be flagging off the second carriageway of 120km with three lanes,” Tinubu stated.

He said work was also at an advanced stage in this section.

“More sections are being designed for procurement and award within the whole length of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.

“On my way here, I witnessed significant progress at Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, with over 10 km of the 55 km stretch already completed.

“I am also pleased to report ongoing works in the Cross River and Akwa Ibom sections and have directed that more segments be designed and procured,” he said.

The president said the Trans-Sahara Trade Route, another visionary project, was advancing steadily, and would connect Calabar to Abuja via Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa.

Tinubu said he had directed accelerated design on the 4th Legacy Project of the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi and Gombe corridor to enable procurement to start.

“Let me assure you that with God on our side, we shall complete these projects and deploy them for the economic benefit of our nation,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
