Only Tinubu can lead us to Nigeria of our dreams – Wike

Only Tinubu can lead us to Nigeria of our dreams – Wike

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the country needs leaders like President Bola Tinubu to achieve the “Nigeria of our dreams”.

Wike said this in his 2025 Distinguish Personality Lecture, titled, “The Nigeria of our Dreams” presented at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Thursday.

Wike pointed out that the greatest challenge confronting Nigeria and  militating against its development was the plague of bad leadership.

He agreed with Chinua Achebe, whose seminar, ‘The Trouble with Nigeria’, graphically captured the challenge, when he stated that ‘the trouble with Nigeria is fairly and squarely the absence of proper leadership’.

“This statement, damaging as it may appear, is extremely difficult to controvert.

“Our leaders have, in the main, emerged through self-serving conspiracies that have little or nothing to do with national interests and development.

“This has been the case in both military and civilian contexts,” he said.

He, however, said that Tinubu had stood out as the leader the people needed to drive Nigeria to progress and prosperity.

He explained that Nigeria needs a leader that was prepared to lead with sound character and resilience in the face of challenges.

He added that the leader must also be a person who believed in the infinite possibilities that the Nigerian nation exemplifies, while taking solid, proactive, logical and well-informed decisions that would maximally actualise her potential.

This leader, he said, must have the courage and audacity to act, build, innovate and generally expand the frontiers of development with a hands-on approach that would emphasise excellence over mediocrity.

He added that more importantly, the leader of Nigerians’ dream must create a society of free and responsible citizens whose potentials flowed freely and free enterprise thrived.

“Let me make bold at this juncture to state that today, in our country, we have such a leader in the person of Tinubu.

“He has shown in several ways and at different times, a stout commitment to the enthronement of democracy in our country, to the extent of even putting his own life on the line in the process.

“He has shown great capacity for engendering development as captured in the unprecedented rapid and exponential development of Lagos state under his watch and even beyond,” he added.

He also said that Tinubu had demonstrated a rare courage by removing fuel subsidy on his first day, upon being sworn in as President.

According to him, leaders before him all spoke about the evil of fuel subsidy, but none had the courage to dare the blackmail of removing it.

“Tinubu did and is fittingly grappling with the inevitable, unintended and sometimes orchestrated consequences of this removal.

“Today, our states have far more resources to develop, the debts are no longer piling and the price of petrol is gradually but steadily adjusting downwards in tandem with the forces of demand and supply and the strict implementation of regulatory conditionalities.

“Also, the overwhelming cry of over-centralisation of power and resources at the national level and the attendant abuse of the doctrine of federalism is being systematically addressed.

“This is being addressed through the creation of zonal/regional commissions empowered to devolve developmental impetus to the respective zones and regions, so that power can truly return to the people.”

On security, Wike said that the situation was being addressed through proper funding and the training and retraining of security forces.

The minister added that Tinubu’s approval for the recruitment of forest guards across the country to take charge of the nation’s forests, bandits and terrorists would no longer find incubation points and free territories to operate.

“Put simply, the era of banditry and terrorism will soon come to an end.

“These and many other policies and measures are being put together by Tinubu to reposition our country on the path of progress and development,” Wike said.

Earlier, Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun, described Wike as a straightforward politician, adding that his wealth of political experience and leadership style was exemplary.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, the governor said that the minister’s infrastructural transformation in the FCT was visionary.

Also, the Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof. Adebayo Bamire, said that the theme of the lecture, ‘’Nigeria of our Dream” was timely and thought-provoking.

“At a critical juncture when our nation’s democratic journey, when the challenges of governance, civic trust, and equitable development are at the forefront of public discourse, this lecture offers a vital platform for reflection, engagement and forward thinking.

“It calls us to interrogate the structures that uphold democracy, the principles that guide responsible governance, citizenship and the strategies that can unlock Nigeria’s development potential,” he said.

The Royal Father of the Day, Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, said he has deep respect for Wike because of his fearlessness.

He described the minister as an “upright politician” who “said things as they are.

“Hate him; like him – what will be will be.” (NAN)

Information Minister commends VON, tasks media on promotion of unity

Information Minister commends VON, tasks media on promotion of unity

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has lauded Voice of Nigeria (VON) for initiating a Forum for open dialogue and deliberations to get feedback on security issues in the country.

Idris also tasked the media on patriotic journalism and promotion of unity among the various ethnic groups in the country.

The Minister stated this during his address at the 2025 Voice of Nigeria’s (VON) Forum in Abuja.

The event with the theme, “Renewed Hope Agenda: Citizen Engagement and National Security” was organised by VON with support from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

“This Forum is a space that VON has initiated for open dialogue, deliberation, collaboration and strategic reflection.

“It is a platform where policy voices and the voice of ordinary Nigerians can be harmonised for national unity, understanding and resilience,” the minister said.

He lauded the initiative by VON under the leadership of the Director-General (D-G), Malam Jibrin Ndace.

He observed that VON, established over 60 years ago, represents what Voice of America was to America in promoting the country.

“I know the Director-General of VON is working hard to broadcast in Chinese language and take the agency to a greater height.

“In a world increasingly defined by misinformation, polarisation and fragmentation, VON is embracing a renewed mandate to amplify the Nigerian voice by localising global content and bringing the world closer to our people in a language that resonates locally within their shared global experiences.

“VON is also internationalising the Nigerian experience by projecting our stories, values, achievements and aspirations to the world with clarity, consistency and pride, and this is very important,” Idris said.

According to the Minister, it is important that the media say what is true and what is accurate, but it is also important to know that journalists must report responsibly, patriotically and in the interest of the country.

“Your media responsibility and role comes to nothing if what you report only ends in fragmenting and putting the country in chaos.

“Even as you report, you should know that you have a responsibility to keep this country together by saying what you know will promote unity,” Idris said.

Also speaking, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, said his ministry intends to reach 15 million Nigerians within one year in the conditional cash transfer programme.

“Today we have paid over 5.8 million Nigerians who are actually poor within six months and we hope that before the year runs out, we will reach the 15 million mark.

”This is the work President Tinubu asked us to do, and we are doing it to ensure that we add our voice to the issue of security in the country. The security agencies have also helped us in carrying out the work,” Yilwatda said.

While appreciating and urging the media to always give feedback on his ministry’s activities, he commended the armed forces for the roles they are playing in saving the lives of Nigerians.

In his address, the D-G of VON, Ndace, said the VON Forum 2025 is a national platform dedicated to national unity, trust and collective actions around issues such as security, governance and citizen participation.

According to him, the theme of the event is a message that speaks directly to the soul of the nation’s aspiration and shared duties as communicators, defenders and builders of Nigeria’s future.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu is not a mere policy document, it is a national philosophy that every Nigerian holds within them the capacity to contribute meaningfully for a more secure, united and prosperous nation.

“It is with that spirit that VON is convening this Forum. National security is most effective when the people are involved, informed and act with responsibility and patriotism,” Ndace said.

Also, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, in his goodwill message, said the theme of the event aligned with the UN’s strategy on road safety.

He said that the FRSC will continue to partner and collaborate with VON to continue to sensitise the public on road safety.

Similarly, the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Dr Ike Neliaku, lauded VON for the initiative aimed at uniting Nigerians to participate in nation building.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event attracted dignitaries from the Office of the National Security Adviser, retired and serving Service Chiefs, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Group seeks inclusive climate action plans in Lagos State

Group seeks inclusive climate action plans in Lagos State

Analysis by The Aiding Lives Initiative for the Vulnerable (ALIVE), an NGO, has identified gender gaps in the Lagos Climate Action Plan Policy.

Accordingly, the group has called for the development of inclusive climate action plans that incorporate coastal community voices, lived experiences, and importance of including women in building a climate-resilient state/environment.

The Executive Director of the organisation, Ms Pandora Umechukwu, made the call at a Stakeholders’ Interface Meeting on Developing a Gender-Sensitive Climate Action Policy in Lagos State on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting had the theme: “Amplifying Women’s Voices in Lagos State Climate Action Policy”.

Umechukwu said that the meeting provided a platform for women from flood-prone communities like Makoko, Ago-Egun, and Badia, to directly engage policymakers and share their lived experiences of climate impacts.

“We have gathered a diverse group of stakeholders to share knowledge, review findings, and begin the collaborative process of developing a Gender-Sensitive Climate Action Policy for Lagos State.

“A policy that acknowledges the differential impact of climate change n women and children, their experiences, knowledge, and leadership in crafting lasting solutions.

“The idea is amplify the voices of these coastal communities who are living through the hard impacts of ocean surge and environmental degradation.

“They endure the brunt of the climate crisis without adequate representation in policy dialogue,” Umechukwu said.

The event featured the presentation of a Gender Analysis of the Lagos State Climate Action Plan (2020–2025).

The analysis, led by ALIVE and eco-activist collaborators, revealed key gaps in the policy’s engagement with women, including absence of gender-disaggregated data and limited inclusion of women in planning and implementation.

Others were lack of funding for gender-focused climate adaptation, gender mainstreaming mentioned, but without clear strategies or funding, and unaddressed gender specific impacts on women.

Umechukwu explained that the meeting interface was about changing that narrative, saying that women and children in coastal communities bear the greatest burden of climate impacts.

She said  that women do not have access to clean energy, mobility, and flood protection.

She decried that women faced gender-specific vulnerabilities due to their dual roles as caregivers and income earners, saying that during floods, they were responsible for ensuring the safety of children, sourcing food, managing water collection, and navigating destroyed sanitation systems.

According to her, unlike men, women are rarely included in decision-making processes, which limits their access to critical information and resources.

“Transport, housing, and energy policies failed to address women’s unique needs. Informal women-led businesses are often displaced without support.

“The current Climate Action Plan does not include specific gender-responsive measures.

“Ocean surges and environmental degradation have deeply disrupted life for women and children in Lagos’ coastal communities.

“Women are most affected by flooding and ocean surges, but are least involved in the solutions. We aim to elevate community voices and propose transformative, inclusive policy changes,” she said.

The meeting also featured a health talk by Dr Anulika Madueke, a medical doctor, who addressed the public health risks of flooding on women and children, calling for stronger preventative practices and applauded the resilience of the community women.

A representative from the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources lauded the work done so far, acknowledging the clean-up efforts, climate resilience trainings, and grassroots policy analysis as “commendable steps” toward inclusive environmental governance.

As the current Climate Action Plan expires in 2025, the meeting concluded with clear calls to action, to develop inclusive climate action plans that ensure communities were actively engaged and consulted at every stage before, during, and after the planning process.

Officials present at the engagement expressed commitment to deeper engagement with communities and recognised the importance of including women in building a climate-resilient state.

The meeting had in attendance representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Chairmen and Directors of Environmental services of Bariga LCDA and Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Community Development leaders and 100 women from coastal communities.

ALIVE is a nonprofit Organisation committed to empowering vulnerable women and children by promoting health, well-being, environmental resilience, enabling them to lead safe and fulfilling lives.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive development.

Orelope-Adefulire spoke at the unveiling of a state-of-the-art educational and residential facility at the Bethesda Home and School for the Blind, Surulere, Lagos, delivered by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs).

The newly constructed and fully furnished complex was inaugurated on Tuesday.

Mr Desmond Utomwen, the Special Assistant to Orelope-Adefulire, on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, said this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

The project comprises 16 classrooms, dormitories, staff rooms, a Braille computer training centre, a library, and a sound studio, among others.

Orelope-Adefulire described the facility as “a symbol of compassion, inclusion, and collective progress,” noting that the intervention reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive governance through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“This Home reaffirms our shared humanity and commitment to leave no one behind, particularly the most vulnerable in our society. This is a place of refuge, a centre of learning, growth, and dignity for children with visual impairments,” she stated.

According to her, the facility speaks directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1 on ending poverty, SDG 3 on good health and well-being, SDG 4 on quality education, SDG 10 on reduced inequalities, and SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities.

“Through this Bethesda Home for the Blind, we are nurturing dreams. We are restoring dignity. We are strengthening the wings of those who were never meant to be grounded.

“When children with visual impairments are given the right environment—safe accommodation, accessible education, skilled caregivers—they flourish.” Orelope-Adefulire declared.

Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, represented by Barr. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Housing, commended the project.

He expressed confidence that the Federal Government, through OSSAP-SDGs, would continue to support the Home and School to ensure the children were not left behind.

In her welcome address, Dr Oreoluwa Awokoya, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Sustainable Development Goals, described the facility as hope made visible, and inclusion made real.

“What we celebrate here today is more than brick and mortar; it is a sanctuary of vision, built not on sight, but on foresight—a place where ability rises beyond disability, and where the dignity of every human life is not only acknowledged, but amplified.

“Bethesda Home reminds us that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is not about slogans; it’s about building structures that ensure no one is left behind—especially not those who have often been kept furthest from opportunity,” she said.

Mr Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, also lauded the initiative, stating that it aligns perfectly with the state government’s values.

“This milestone underscores our administration’s commitment to promoting inclusion, sustainability, quality education, and renewed hope for all,” Ogunlende said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

APC chieftain lauds Tinubu’s achievements, hails Interior Minister

By Precious Akutammadu

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers, Mr Darlington Nwauju, has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for the innovations introduced in the ministry.

Nwauju told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that his commendation was necessitated by the turnaround in the ministry which had become a testimony of how Nigerian youths can contribute to the nation’s development.

“In less than two years, there is verifiable evidence of the impact of reforms he introduced to that Ministry, which many Nigerians can attest to.

“It is not possible that you walk into an ATM pay point, withdraw your own money and start clapping for being paid,” Nwauju said.

According to him, it is right to critically appraise a sector that was asphyxiated before today and confirm that it’s been oxygenated, now serving the public good and justifying tax payers money put into that ministry.

“Talking about taxpayers money, the Ministry of Interior has overshot the targets set for it in the last two budget cycles in terms of revenue generation.

“These are clear indicators that the weeks and months ahead may witness improved performances with the cooperation of the National Assembly committees with oversight powers on that ministry.

“There is no way the return on investment of taxpayers money into that ministry will not yield dividends given the management tact and leadership qualities of the Minister.

“On the balance of probabilities, public office holders can actually be reasonable, responsible and responsive if we identify and protect them.

“This is to ensure they are not intimidated out of the public space by those who are used to poor service delivery.

“Youths in Nigeria make up over sixty per cent of the voting demographics and we must not allow those who believe that we must stay perpetually at the backwaters of Nigerian politics, to continue to play on our intelligence,” he said.

Nwauju said that Tunji-Ojo facilitated the release of over 4000 inmates from different correctional facilities, where they were serving prison terms that were avoidable.

“The inmates were released after the ministry mobilised corporate bodies to raise N585 million for the payment of their fines, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibilities, (CSR)

“Over one hundred thousand personnel of the paramilitary services under the Interior Ministry have been promoted so far in two promotion exercises and passport applications and collections are now easy.

“The Minister cleared over two hundred thousand passport backlog; established enhanced e-passport facilities in Europe and inaugurated contactless biometric passports.

“He ensured command and control centre for the NIS, deployment of e-gates at our international airports, remodelled fire service academy and so on.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

No fewer than 300 male adults and children have benefited from the free scrotal hernia surgery of the Better Health for Rural Women and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO) of Ebonyi Governor’s wife, Mrs Mary-Maudlune Nwifuru.

Prof. Nkechi Emma-Echiegu, team lead of the foundation disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Abakaliki on Wednesday on the two years of Gov. Francis Nwifuru in office.

Emma-Echiegu said that the beneficiaries of the surgeries were selected from the 13 local government areas of the state.

The BERWO Team Lead also said the foundation had in 2024 enrolled 4,078 pregnant women into the state health insurance and 600 infants for free immunisation.

She said that the office of Mrs Nwifuru had made significant achievements within the two years, ranging from youths and women empowerment.

“So far, 600 infants from 0 to 5 years were captured for immunisation across the 13 local government areas of the state. The office of the Wife of the Governor has also treated 300 sickle cell champions within the period.

“We have empowered the youths on various skills and they were given start up kits. Women groups from various local governments have been empowered in agriculture and supported with farm inputs.

“This is to improve the women’s livelihood in the state. We have done a lot on the issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

“In BERWO, we have thematic areas which include: maternal mortality, youth and women empowerment, girl child education, internal displaced persons and GBV,” she stated.

The Team Lead added that the state government under BERWO foundation is targeting to distribute 17,000 postnatal care items to pregnant and nursing mothers in rural communities under Baby Shower Initiative of Mrs Nwifuru.

Emma-Echiegu noted that the distribution of the items was in a bid to increase patronage of Primary Health Centres by pregnant women.

“The distribution was in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health and Office of the Wife of the Governor,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has pledged to adopt a zero-tolerance stance against reckless drivers during and after the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, made this known on Wednesday at a Sallah rally in Abuja, organised to sensitise road users to safe driving habits.

Mohammed also warned that all traffic offenders would face prosecution.

The Corp Marshall emphasised that the FRSC would strictly enforce laws against speeding, overloading, drunk driving, and other disruptive behaviours behind the wheel.

He, however, expressed concern about the national image projected through poor road culture, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs.

He criticised the trend of overloading vehicles, describing it as dangerous and unacceptable.

“Three in front, six at the back. it doesn’t speak well of us.

“This time around, we are not leaving any stone unturned. Any recalcitrant driver that we catch is going to face prosecution.

“Our crash analysis shows that over 70 per cent of road traffic crashes annually are caused by speeding,” he said.

Mohammed also advised drivers and passengers to take responsibility for safety.

“Abuja is the heart of Nigeria. If our roads are chaotic here, it sends the wrong message to the world.

“When visitors arrive, the first thing they notice is our driving culture,” he stated.

Mohammed also warned against destructive behaviours such as using phones, watching inappropriate content, or eating while driving.

“We don’t condone this anymore. We are going to enforce it strictly,” he said.

The FRSC boss called on the public, especially commuters, to speak up when their safety was threatened by reckless drivers.

He also appealed to the media to support FRSC’s sensitisation efforts, stressing that a crash-free Sallah was possible through cooperation, enforcement, and education.

“Passengers must stop being silent. It is their right to demand safe driving. Our prayer is that this Salah, we record no crash. We are committed to making that a reality,” he said.

Speaking, Mr Jibrin Uke, Zonal Chairman Karu, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), commended the FRSC for engaging drivers in safety education ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.

Uke expressed gratitude for the sensitisation exercise, describing it as timely and impactful.

He noted that the union often addresses safety concerns with members, adding that hearing the message directly from FRSC officials had a greater impact.

“We really appreciate the FRSC staff for their visit. They enlightened our drivers, and we are happy about that.

“Most times, our drivers don’t take us seriously when we talk to them. But with FRSC coming personally to educate them, they listened and understood better,” he said.

The union leader reaffirmed NURTW’s support for the FRSC’s campaign for safer roads and called on passengers to cooperate by obeying safety rules and cautioning reckless drivers. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CTA, NEITI urge stronger FOI Act to boost transparency

CTA, NEITI urge stronger FOI Act to boost transparency

185 total views today

By Naomi Sharang

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) have called for stronger Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to boost transparency in Nigeria.

The Freedom of Information (FoI) Act, enacted in 2011, is an Act to make public records and information more freely available for public access to public records and information.

Executive Director, CTA, Faith Nwadishi and the Executive Secretary, NEITI, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji made the call at “The North-Central Regional Roundtable on the FOI Act in Nigeria” held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The theme of the event is “14 Years of FOI and Extractives Transparency in Nigeria: Strengthening Access, Accountability and Citizen Engagement”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the roundtable is part of efforts under the Strengthening Accountability and Governance in Nigeria Initiative (SAGNI).

It is a 12-month project CTA is implementing with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC) and funding from the European Union through International IDEA.

In her address, Nwadishi said that the conversation was not just symbolic but was timely because the challenges around access to public information in Nigeria have reached a critical stage.

“Particularly in the extractive sector, which remains the economic lifeline of our country.

“Even with NEITI reports, it is still one of the most difficult sectors to obtain clear, timely and complete information from.

“The extractive sector—which includes oil, gas and solid minerals—is far too important to remain shrouded in secrecy with the huge revenue and foreign exchange earnings that come from the sector.

“It is also the sector most vulnerable to corruption, illicit financial flows, and opacity around contracts and revenue allocation.

“This is why NEITI’s reports are not just documents; they are vital instruments for FOI implementation,” she said.

She noted that there had been progress with the FOI Act since 2011 when former President Goodluck Jonathan signed the Act into law but added that implementation remained weak.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary, NEITI, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji said that the FOI Act marked a transformative moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

He proposes an amendment to the FOI Act that introduces sanctions for those who weaponise it through falsehood, blackmail or institutional harassment.

“This law must protect access—and punish abuse. If we do not act, the FOI Act risks losing its moral force and democratic utility”

Orji recommended the enactment of legal penalties for FOI misuse involving false identities, misinformation and blackmail.

On her part, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jeddy-Agba said that the extractive sector relied heavily on transparency to foster sustainable development.

Jeddy-Agba was represented by Mariah Obafemi in the ministry.

She said: “The extractive industry is doing a lot well in the area of transparency and even in the area of complying with the FOI Act.

“The Attorney-General, by virtue of Section 29 of the Act, is mandated to submit annual compliance reports to the National Assembly.

“I can tell you that the extractive industry is doing well. They’ve been complying over the years,” she said.

Similarly, Programme Manager EU/RoLAC, Dr Emmanuel Uche, called for the deepening of the implementation of the FOI Act in Nigeria.

He urged civil society organisations and non-state actors to join hands again, to revive whistleblower’s laws, witness protection laws and public interest disclosure laws.(NAN)
