The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has unveiled a project tagged “ACT Naija” an action aimed at strengthening social protection for the vulnerable in the society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project is to be implemented in seven states across the federation, which were selected based on some considerations and poverty indicators.

The initiative is being implemented by a consortium comprising ANEEJ, the New Initiative for Social Development (NISD) and Bread for the World (BfTW), Germany, and co-funded by the European Union (EU).

The project seeks to promote inclusive, transparent and accountable social protection systems across seven Nigerian states — Borno, Delta, Enugu, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director, ANEEJ, while unveiling the project at its management workshop in Abuja, said there was need to engage the government for effective implementation of social protection law to alleviate poverty.

Ugolor, represented by Mr Leo Atakpu, Deputy Executive Director, ANEEJ, emphasised the need for a stronger legislative framework at the subnational and federal levels to drive the National Social Protection initiative.

“The figures are disturbing; as I speak to you, 133 million Nigerians are living in multidimensional poverty, we need to target the vulnerable population to ensure that they are pulled out of the poverty line.

“This project is to enable evidence-based monitoring to promote citizens’ awareness and inclusion in the national social register,” he said.

According to Ugolor, the project also aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16 and 17 which focuses on addressing poverty alleviation, strong instructions and global partnership.

In terms of scope and target groups, he said the project would reach 2,120 individuals, targeting 150 CSOs, 30 Community Based Organisations and five Persons with Disability.

He included others to be reached as 1,000 women groups members, including petty traders and farmers, 300 youth leaders, 60 media professionals and 80 government officials and international agencies.

“We will review objectives and expected outcomes and define key milestones and deliverables.”

The Project Manager for “ACT Naija,” Ms Chiara Casareua, said they had been wanting to expand the scope of partnership with their various partners and seeking opportunities for more cooperation.

Team Lead of EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Ruben Alba, expressed support towards the realisation of the project to assist the vulnerable in the country.

Also speaking, Mr Steve Tsado, Project Manager of New Initiative for Social Development, expressed optimism towards effective implementation of the project which was designed to strengthen advocacy for social inclusion and institutional reforms.

“As a partner collaborating with ‘Act Naija’ project, we have over two decades experience working in communities in Nigeria and have an active footprint in over 20 states doing so much in social development.

“We are very excited to join our partners in driving social protection; we consider it critical to Nigerians and look forward to joining efforts to drive desired objectives of the project,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government through the Ministry for Marine and Blue Economy, on Wednesday, donated 3,500 lifejackets to the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).

Speaking at the event, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, noted that the distribution of lifejackets to Lagos State was the current administration’s initiative to foster a culture of safety on our waterways.

Oyeyola represented by the Director, Marine Services, Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Mercy Ilori, added that the distribution was particularly for communities where water transport was an essential part of daily life.

Oyeyola noted that the campaign had been conducted in Niger, Bayelsa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom states and would move to other littoral states in the coming weeks.

“The challenge posed by boat crashes and related fatalities across the country remains a grave concern.

“Many of these tragedies are preventable and often arise from neglect of basic safety measures, particularly the use of lifejackets.

“It is in recognition of this menace that the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, to prioritise life-saving interventions to bring about tangible change.

“Our commitment is to end the avoidable loss of lives on Nigeria’s waters.

“Consequently, our strategy is anchored on three pillars: strict enforcement of the Inland Waterways Transportation Regulations 2023; continuous public education and sensitisation campaigns; and provision of critical safety equipment, notably lifejackets, to waterway users,” he said.

He said the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), a key agency under the ministry, continued to lead efforts in regulation, compliance monitoring, and support for education and enforcement along Nigeria’s inland waterways.

He said for the campaign on safety to yield sustainable results, collaboration with state and local governments was essential, calling on traditional rulers, community leaders, boat operators, and transport unions to champion this cause and embed safety culture at the grassroots level.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, acknowledged the wonderful strides and achievements of NIWA, noting that the continuous collaboration, initiatives and intentional activities would boost safety on the waterways.

“I am thrilled that we have this initiative by the marine and blue economy, this will not only boost safety but ensure we reach communities in Lagos State.

“This will enhance safety culture and give people the assurance to use the waterways,” he said.

In his vote of thanks, NIWA Managing Director, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, noted that safety was everyone’s responsibility, not limited to NIWA or Lagos State government.

“Having a coast guard was important on the waterways to arrest these criminals on the waterways.

“However the issue of coast guard is very important, the water marshals have limitations, and I am appealing to the National Assembly that the Coast Guard Bill be passed.

“Safety on our waterways is something that we are taking very serious and we will ensure a free and zero mishap on our waterways,” he said.

Earlier, the General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, noted that the event was not all about collaboration but about safety which keeps the waterways going.

“We appreciate the Federal Government for its continuous effort in ensuring safer waterways which is a small part of the Marine and Blue Economy.

“1,000 life jackets are here now, 2,500 are on their way. Between now and end of the first week in June, all those who should get the life jackets will get it.

“What we are doing is to identify that they are operators, passengers. We do not want people to receive life jackets and keep at home, it should be used and seen on our waterways.

“To criminalise those that do not use the life jackets, this is something we will push to the assembly and entrenched in the law,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 Ambassadorial Assembly, an NGO, says there is a need to prioritise the empowerment of children as a fundamental strategy for realising the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Dr Elizabeth Emeka-Onwucheka, Chairperson, Education and Mass Literacy Committee, AU Agenda 2063 Ambassadorial Assembly, made the call at the 2025 Children’s Day Celebration organised by the group.

According to Emeka-Onwucheka, the event, with the theme “From the Streets to the Classroom“ echoes the aspirations of Agenda 2063, a prosperous Africa where every child has access to education and dignity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Agenda 2063 outlines Africa’s strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation into the global powerhouse of the future over a 50-year period.

The chairperson said that the call aligned with the AU’s vision of an inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Africa.

She emphasised the critical role of children in the continent’s development trajectory.

“The AU Agenda 2063 is big on creating the Africa we want.

“It is the children that we need to build the Africa we want, because they are the future of Africa.

“That is one of the things that we are doing today, educating the African child, taking the African child off the street to the classroom where they ought to be,” she said.

She expressed passion about building the dream Africa by equipping the children of today to take up that task.

“This is because they are the ones that will be here to run through the 50 years agenda of the AU Agenda 2063,”she said

Emeka-Onwucheka said that the Assembly collaborated with Premiere Academy and Cradle2Harvard International Schools (C2HIS) to carry out the project.

She said that the aim was to ensure that children already in the classrooms became the ambassadors for out-of-school children.

According to her, the objective is to make them ambassadors of the AU agenda while carrying their mates on the streets along to build the African dream.

The Principal of Premiere Academy Lugbe, Christopher Akinsowon, said that there were millions of African children on the streets who were out-of-school rather than in the classroom.

According to Akinsowon, African children are calling for help.

“They are full of potential; they are full of so many things they want to express themselves but due to certain imitations, they can not.

“They face limitations like school fees, inability to develop their immediate environment, and so many things that make them unable to give to the world what is expected of them.

“I think first and foremost, government legislation is very important.

“The role of government is key in addressing these challenges and then the individual effort,” she said.

Some students who participated in the event expressed readiness to grow into championing the AU Agenda 2063 and stressed the need to assist out-of-school children to get back to the classroom.

Ms Chikaima Ogunema, a student of Premiere Academy, commended the organisers of the event.

Ogunema said that the programme was impactful and it empowered her on what to do to contribute to Africa.

Deborah Ogaji from Government Secondary School, Wuye, Abuja, said that she had been empowered to be a change agent.6

“Today I learnt about the African child and that I can be anything I want to be, so I will help other children to realise their worth as Africans,”she said.

Another student, Mr Ebere Bassit, said that the programme was a good way to celebrate children’s day and also the African child, especially the homeless, orphans and marginalised ones. (NAN)

CAPRIGHTS-VP sensitisation outreach at the Idimu Junior College in Egbeda, Lagos State, with the theme “Protecting Child Domestic Workers from Maltreatment.”

Coker, who spoke to the students using Yoruba language in line with the school’s observance of Yoruba-Speaking Day, observed every Wednesday in Lagos State public schools, educated them on the five basic rights of children.

She highlighted the rights as the right to education, health, safety, family life and recreation/play.

Coker noted that many children were deprived of these rights and endured harsh living and working conditions, with limited access to education and healthcare.

She called for collective efforts to protect children serving as house helps.

“Every child has the right to education, just like each of you here today.

“No child should be deprived of this right, as education is the foundation of a brighter future.

“Education helps shape children into responsible adults and plays a major role in reducing the number of dysfunctional families in the society,” she said.

The students were grouped into three different groups for focused, interactive conversations while the groups were handled by Mrs Mercy Joshua, Programme Coordinator and Mrs Agatha Chinedu, the Security Protection Officer of the centre.

The students and teachers were encouraged to report any case of child abuse or maltreatment to the relevant government agencies.

The School Principal, Mr Olajide Idowu, applauded the centre for its consistent commitment to championing the rights of vulnerable children.

Idowu encouraged both the teachers and students to make use of the toll-free lines to report any case of abuse or rights violations.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that no fewer than 500 students and 20 teachers participated in the outreach. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Securities and Exchange Commission has warned the public against investing in unregistered investment schemes, including Silverkuun Investment Cooperative Society/Silverkuun Limited.
In a circular issued by the commission in Abuja on Wednesday, SEC said the scheme was not registered to operate in any capacity in the country’s capital market.
The commission said its attention had been drawn to the activities of these entities, which falsely present themselves as investment advisers and fund managers.
“The attention of the Securities and Exchange Commission has been drawn to the activities of Silverkuun Investment Cooperative Society/Silverkuun Limited which holds itself out as an Investment Adviser/Fund Manager.
“The commission hereby informs the public that Silverkuun Investment Cooperative Society/Silverkuun Limited is not registered to operate in any capacity in the Nigerian Capital Market.
The SEC advised the public to refrain from engaging with Silverkuun Investment Cooperative Society/Silverkuun Limited or its representatives in respect to any business in the capital market.
“The commission uses this medium to reiterate that transacting in the Nigerian Capital Market with unregistered and unregulated entities exposes investors to financial risk including fraud and potential loss of investment.
“The investing public is, therefore, reminded to verify the status of companies and entities offering investment opportunities on the commission’s dedicated portal  www.sec.gov.ng/cmos before transacting with them,” SEC said.
The Director-General of SEC, Dr Emomotimi Agama, had recently warned that the commission would not hesitate to shut down the operations of any unregistered entity.
“We will shut down their operations and the promoters will be made to face the full weight of the law,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The President, Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Musa, has urged parents to nurture the dreams and aspirations of their children.

Musa made the call during the 2025 International Children’s Day Celebration, organised by DEPOWA, in Abuja.

She said that children were the greatest gifts to any nation and should be treated as such, adding that in every child lies a dream, a destiny and a divine spark waiting to be nurtured.

“Every child deserves the chance to thrive, whether born in the barracks or outside the barracks.

“To our beautiful children, you are smart, you are strong, you are loved, your dreams are valid, your voice matters and you’re not too young to lead.

“To our parents, we carry a sacred duty to raise children who are educated and empathetic, to guide them with discipline and dignity.

“How we speak to our children becomes their inner voice. They are watching us, let us give them something beautiful to become,” she said.

Mr Jimba Ahmed, a teacher from Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives (NAOWA) College, described the event as a wonderful experience for the children, adding that they would now have stories to tell.

“It is a good atmosphere for the children and it has been worthwhile. The match, the recitations and all are good for the children,” he said.

One of the children who spoke, Kazim Temidayo, said it was a memorable day for the children and thanked DEPOWA for the experience.

“This means a lot because not every child has this opportunity to show themselves and express their talents and build courage like us,” she said.

Kaduna electricity assures Kebbi of power restoration

Kaduna electricity assures Kebbi of power restoration

By Muhammad Lawal

Dr Umar Abubakar-Hashidu, Managing Director, Kaduna Electric Distribution Company (KEDCO), has assured electricity consumers in Kebbi that normal power supply would be restored to the area this week.

Abubakar-Hashidu made the disclosure while interacting with Journalists shortly after a closed door meeting with Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi at Government House, Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

The MD attributed the current epileptic power supply to destruction of three towers on 330 KV line from Kanji to Birnin Kebbi to Niger Republic.

He, however, said that work on the affected towers had reached advanced stage, assuring that engineers alongside other technical personnel have gone far in fixing the problem.

“Measures is being taken by Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited and KEDCO to ensure that power is restored to affected areas,” he said.

Giving the background of the power outage in the state, Abubakar-Hashidu recalled that about three weeks ago there was collapse of three towers on the 330 KV Birnin Kebbi transmission line.

“That means bulk power cannot be sent from Kanji to Birnin Kebbi, this affects power supply not only to Birnin Kebbi and Sokoto but also to Niger Republic and other neighbouring countries.

“The 330 KV line is manned and operated by TCN, they supply bulk power to us for onward distribution to our customers.

“Upon that happening, a decision was taken to back feed Sokoto, Kebbi and Talatan Mafara through the 132 KV through Zaria-Funtua coming up to Talatan Mafara, Sokoto down to Kebbi,” he said.

The MD, however, confirmed that the voltage was very low due to the distance from Kebbi to Zaria, adding that Zaria was being fed from Enugu through Benue to Jos to Zaria.

“I am happy to give the good news that by this weekend the 330 KV line will be back. Energy and bulk power will be restored to Birnin Kebbi, Argungu and Yauri.

“All the four transmission stations within this axis that are power dedicated to KV line will have power and all these issues of low voltage will be over,” Abubakar-Hashidu assured. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Daniel Obaje

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rights and welfare of Nigerian children, as the country marked Children’s Day 2025.

He also called for a bully-free generation and enhanced child protection measures at all levels.

Represented by the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mahmoud Mariya, on Tuesday in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the invaluable role of children in shaping Nigeria’s future.

“My dear children, the pride and nature of our future of our great nation, I join you to celebrate the 2025 National Children’s Day with immense pride and profound joy.

“On this special day, let me reaffirm our commitment to nurturing and protecting you as Nigeria’s future leaders, innovators and change makers.”

Tinubu emphasized the significance of this year’s theme  “Stand up, Speak up: Building a Bully-Free Generation”, he underscored the government’s determination to end all forms of violence against children.

“Violence, bullying and neglect have no place in Nigeria today. A child who learns in fear cannot learn well. A child who grows in fear cannot grow right.’’

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasised Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to protecting children’s rights.

“Children’s Day reminds us globally to uphold every child’s right to survive, thrive, and fulfil their potential.

“Nigeria’s commitment is rooted in international frameworks like the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and domestically through the Child Rights Act, which protects children from violence.”

She highlighted the urgency of addressing bullying, the theme of this year’s celebration.

“Bullying remains a serious threat to our children’s dignity, safety, and mental health. Nationally, over half of adolescents report being bullied, and many cases happen in classrooms.”

The Minister called for swift implementation of policies to ensure safe environments, while acknowledging other risks such as child labour, trafficking and early marriage that threaten Nigerian children’s wellbeing.

Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, underscored the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for children, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory,

“Our focus in the FCT is on community engagement, building a strong network of support for our children, and ensuring their safety and well-being.

“It takes a village to raise a child and we must all stand as that village to protect and empower every child in the FCT and across Nigeria.”

The event also featured an address by Hon. Rahama Waziri, Speaker of the FCT Children’s Parliament, who called for an end to bullying and for the empowerment of children’s voices.

She urged adults including parents, teachers and leaders to listen, support and protect children.

“Bullying isn’t just a word we hear in school, it is something many of us have felt, seen or even gone through.

“Enough is enough, we want to grow up in a world where we don’t have to pretend, a world where no one is afraid to be different, where kindness is louder than cruelty and where we all feel safe to just be ourselves.

“Let us make a promise today. We will not stay silent, we will not look away, we will stand up and together, we will build a bullying-free environment.”(NAN)
