President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the rights, dreams and futures of every Nigerian child.

Tinubu made the pledge in a message to mark the 2025 National Children’s Day.

“Across every school, community, and home in Nigeria today, you are the most precious part of our national fabric, the heartbeat of our nation’s future, and the custodians of tomorrow’s promise, innovation, and leadership.

“I, therefore, reaffirm today our constitutional, moral, and intergenerational duty and commitment to safeguard every Nigerian child, protect his rights, and nurture his dreams,” he said.

According to Tinubu, this year’s theme, “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” could not have been more timely as it speaks directly to the culture the country is building.

“A culture where every child feels safe, respected, and heard, both in physical spaces and digital communities. Just to be clear, violence, bullying, and neglect have no place in the Nigeria of today,” said the President.

He said globally, more than 1 in 3 children experienced bullying regularly, and that in Nigeria, studies estimated that up to 65 per cent of school-age children had experienced some form of physical, psychological, or social aggression.

“This is unacceptable. A child who learns in fear cannot learn well. A child who grows in fear cannot grow right.

“My fellow Nigerians and our dear children, we prioritise child protection under the Renewed Hope Agenda. This includes the full implementation of Nigeria’s National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (2024–2030), which I recently launched.

“The plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to prevent abuse, prosecute perpetrators, and support victims, backed by robust financing and multi-sectoral coordination,” said Tinubu.

He said his administration was further taking decisive steps to prevent, detect, and respond to all forms of violence against children.

“As a government, we have initiated a comprehensive review of the Child Rights Act (2003) and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (2015) to expand the scope of protection, strengthen their provisions, close implementation gaps, and ensure nationwide enforcement.

“We are also leveraging the Cybercrime Act, which is in full force, to protect children from cyberbullying, exploitation, and abuse.

“I am pleased to note that 36 states have domesticated the Child Rights Act, thus reflecting our collective resolve to protect and provide for the welfare of children,” continued Tinubu.

However, he said the laws alone would not be sufficient to protect children, saying that a holistic approach where parents, teachers, caregivers, faith leaders, lawmakers, and citizens must take ownership was required.

“We are investing in other focused national systems for child protection, such as the Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS), which is being scaled up to track and respond to cases in real-time.

“The Ministry of Women’s Affairs is strengthening community-based child protection mechanisms, training frontline responders, and leading nationwide awareness campaigns to end harmful traditional practices.

“Additionally, and in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are committed to implementing proactive measures to strengthen existing efforts to support families and communities, including developing a robust institutional framework focused exclusively on Child Protection and Development.

“This will ensure greater accountability in safeguarding the rights and well-being of every Nigerian child,” the President assured.

He called on all partners, stakeholders, and duty-bearers to sustain and deepen collective efforts, and that child rights must be embedded in all budgets, plans and policies.

“Let today mark a renewed movement to build a Nigeria where no child suffers in silence, no child is left behind, and every child grows in dignity, peace and love,” the President stated. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the Gubernatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Anambra Governorship election to be held on Nov. 8, has vowed to deliver the state to the APC.

Ukachukwu made the pledge while addressing State House Correspondents, after the presentation of the APC flag to him and Sen. Uche Ekwunife, Deputy Gubernatorial Candidate, by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, on Monday.

Ukachukwu said the President charged him and his running mate to bring the state to the centre.

“He has given us a charge to go and bring Anambra to the centre, and that’s what we’re going to do. Anambra cannot continue to be a one-party system.

”The President was in Anambra recently and saw how ready and how charged the party people are in Anambra. He was happy about the turnout of the people that came out to receive him.”

Ukachukwu said he was confident that the APC would triumph in the gubernatorial election because he and his running mate were the ones that made APGA strong.

“I was a former senatorial candidate of APGA. I left APGA with all my supporters to join APC. The Labour Party, the YPP and other political parties have joined us in the journey.

“We have over 80 groups that are lining up to join us. This makes APC to be bigger. It means nothing is left of APGA in the state.

“It’s not the first time an incumbent will be losing an election; it happened in Zamfara, in Imo and other places. Even in Anambra too, so it’s not new to us in Anambra,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

President of the Africa Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina, has urged the media to play a bigger role in amplifying Africa’s voice, particularly by promoting positive narratives and showcasing the continent’s achievements.

Adesina made the call on Monday during a media breakfast to open the bank’s week-long 2025 Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

He emphasised the critical role journalists played in shaping the narrative about Africa’s development and informing both regional and global audiences.

“You are not just observers. You are amplifiers of Africa’s voice. You shape the narrative. You challenge us. You inform the world,” he said.

The meetings, which mark the final chapter of Adesina’s 10-year leadership, are expected to host over 5,000 delegates from 91 countries.

Participants include AfDB Governors, policy makers, private sector leaders, academics, civil society actors, and development partners.

Adesina said the meetings offer a platform for high-level policy dialogues and strategic conversations on pressing issues affecting the continent.

He listed some of them to include macroeconomic stability, domestic resource mobilisation, energy transitions, and food systems transformation.

The News agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2025 meetings are being held under the theme: “Making Africa’s Capital Work Better for Africa’s Development.”

Key highlights of the sessions include the Presidential Dialogue, the launch of the African Economic Outlook, and in-depth thematic discussions aimed at mobilising capital and building stronger institutions.

Adesina urged the media to fully engage in the events, ask tough questions, and help tell the “real stories of transformation” happening across the continent.

The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a specialised Child Protection and Development Agency, dedicated to protecting and promoting the welfare of children nationwide.

Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs, made this known on Monday at a news conference ahead of the 2025 Children’s Day celebration in Abuja.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted the challenges affecting children, ranging from child trafficking, forced labour, child marriage, domestic abuse and abandonment, saying the vices are unacceptable.

She said the new initiative would provide a comprehensive framework for addressing the unique needs and vulnerabilities of Nigerian children, ensuring their safety, well-being, and development.

She added that the agency is expected to play a critical role in safeguarding children’s rights, preventing child abuse and exploitation, and providing support services for vulnerable children.

According to her, efforts are in place to establish a National Child Protection Data Base and a Child Welfare Index to track progress, guide policy affecting children, and people accountable to measurable outcomes.

“And most importantly, Nigeria will establish a dedicated child protection and development agency, a single coordinated institutional framework that will streamline all national efforts related to children’s welfare development and protection.

“This agency will ensure coherence, efficiency, and long-term impact across programmes and stakeholders,” she said.

Duncan Harvey, Country Director, SCI, emphasised their support toward implementing the Child Rights Act and strengthening child’s protection system to address bullying in and out of school across Nigeria.

Harvey stressed the need for the establishment of a national framework for anti-bullying, clear policies, implementation plans, funding, and monitoring.

He also advocated for regular training of teachers on safeguarding and positive discipline, establishing safe, confidential reporting channels in schools and nationwide awareness campaigns to protect children regardless of gender, disability, or background, to feel safe, heard, and protected. Declare May 25th national public holiday, institute urges FG

Declare May 25th national public holiday, institute urges FG

By Angela Atabo

The Pan-African Dialogue Institute (TPADI) has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to declare May 25th, which is Africa Day, a national public holiday.

The President of TPADI, Dr Effiong Udo, made the call at a news conference in Abuja.

Udo stated that recognising Africa Day would strengthen Nigeria’s connection to the rest of the continent.

The president added that such would also promote national pride in the country’s role as a leader in Pan-Africanism.

He explained Africa Day commemorates the founding date of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which later became the African Union (AU).

According to him, the day is a symbol of African liberation, unity, and collective responsibility for the development of the continent, and many African countries mark it ceremoniously except Nigeria.

“We, therefore, call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to declare May 25 Africa Day as a national public holiday.

“We recommend that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, alongside Ministry of Education and Ministry of Tourism, take necessary steps.

“They should integrate Africa Day into our national consciousness with public awareness campaigns and school curricula.

“We also call on civil society organisations, universities, the creative industries, and the private sector within Nigeria and the diaspora to join hands with us in this campaign,” he said.

Udo added that if Nigerians could celebrate international days assigned to hepatitis, malaria, HIV and AIDS, among others, Africa Day should also be celebrated.

According to him, the day is more than a symbolic milestone but a call to historical consciousness, a living symbol of African liberation, unity, and collective responsibility for the development of our continent.

He said that recognising the need and urgency for Nigeria to take a leadership role in Pan-African discourse, the institute launched its inaugural international dialogue conference on Pan-Africanism.

“This year, we are excited to mark Africa Day with a focus on Nigeria, the giant of Africa.

“We feel Nigeria is incomplete unless it aligns with the vision of a united, self-determined, dignified and respected Africa.

“This sentiment underpins TPADI’s mission to reignite the fire of Pan-Africanism in our great country,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Yoruba council hails Tinubu’s IMF loan repayment

Yoruba council hails Tinubu’s IMF loan repayment

By Kazeem Akande

The Yoruba Council Worldwide has commended President Bola Tinubu for repaying the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan, describing it as a boost for Nigeria’s economy.

President of the group, Mr Oladotun Hassan, praised the move in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

Hassan said the President had taken a commendable step towards economic recovery by relieving Nigeria of such a major financial obligation.

“I speak as president of the Yoruba Council Worldwide, representing indigenous Yoruba people at home and abroad, and we appreciate President Tinubu’s bold economic decisions.

“He deserves full support and prayers. He has proven his leadership capacity by ensuring the IMF loan has been successfully repaid,” Hassan said.

He further praised Tinubu’s decision to repurpose looted properties for public benefit, describing it as a clear sign of the fight against corruption.

Hassan also noted the President’s efforts to involve the youth through student loan schemes and the creation of a youth academy.

He stated that Nigeria’s global image is improving, and foreign policy is becoming stronger under Tinubu’s leadership.

“These achievements have brought support from various quarters, even opposition parties, with some endorsing him for a second term,” he said.

He cautioned the Afenifere group against turning the issue of power rotation into an ethnic conflict.

Hassan said Afenifere has the right to support any candidate but should not frame it as an ethnic necessity.

“Democracy isn’t about ethnic entitlement. Let’s assess the President’s performance during his eight years before making such demands.

“If Tinubu can pay the IMF loan, he can also reduce food prices significantly, which we’re already seeing.

“Rice prices have dropped from N120,000 to around N50,000 per bag. That’s proof of his economic impact,” he added.

He said the President inherited a struggling system and has focused on rebuilding without blaming others or making excuses.

According to him, Tinubu is giving all Nigerians a chance to thrive through regional development commissions.

“This isn’t politics as usual. Tinubu appoints competent people to handle sensitive positions, not loyalists.

“He is ensuring that every region gets equal attention, regardless of the role of state governors.

“Considering our progress, Tinubu deserves to complete his eight-year term. This isn’t about re-election but continuing a working vision,” Hassan added.

He clarified that his remarks were not intended to criticise former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He said opposition figures like Atiku should focus on supporting good governance rather than forcing themselves into power.

“Leadership can mean promoting good governance through cooperation, not just competition.

“There’s no reason Peter Obi and Tinubu can’t collaborate. They met in Rome and shared smiles, showing potential unity.

“They are not enemies. Nigerians should focus on how to support this government for the common good,” Hassan said.

The Federal Government recently confirmed repayment of the $3.4bn IMF emergency loan taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said the repayment, approved by President Tinubu, restores Nigeria’s fiscal credibility.

He said it also addresses financial burdens inherited from past administrations. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Coalition urges action to end gender gaps in employment

Coalition urges action to end gender gaps in employment

A coalition under the Nigeria Women in Leadership (WIL) Cohort has urged Nigeria’s private sector and labour policymakers to take urgent, concrete steps to end women’s exclusion from formal employment.

The coalition made the call through Hannatu-Favour Asheolge, Media Contact for Gatefield, an advocacy organisation.

According to the group, the appeal follows the release of new data from the Women in the Workplace 2024 report by McKinsey & Company.

The report reveals that women occupy only one in three entry-level positions in Nigeria’s private sector.

The findings, based on gender representation data from 65 companies in Nigeria, Kenya, and India, show that Nigerian women hold just 33 per cent of entry-level private sector roles, in spite comprising nearly half of the country’s workforce.

“The data paints a sobering picture of the challenges facing Nigerian women in formal employment.

“While women make up nearly half of the labour force, their representation in private sector jobs remains alarmingly low and it declines even further up the corporate ladder”.

In the finance sector, the coalition pointed out, the proportion of women drops by 19 percentage points between entry-level and executive roles.

Omowunmi Akingbohungbe, Executive Director of Women in Management, Business, and Public Service (WIMBIZ), said the report reflects the lived reality of many Nigerian women.

“The real problem begins with the entry-level hiring process. If we are serious about growth, we must build systems that guarantee equal opportunity for women from the start and provide the support they need to rise”.

Akingbohungbe argued that companies which fail to harness the full talent pool are hindering their own progress.

She added that civil society groups are calling on companies to adopt gender-equal recruitment targets at entry level and publicly report on progress towards achieving gender equity.

The coalition also urged government and regulatory bodies to develop stronger policies to facilitate women’s advancement in the workplace and promote compliance across board.

Abosede George-Ogan, Founder of Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR), said there is an urgent need to review and strengthen Nigeria’s labour policies to address gender-based workplace inequalities.

“Women need protection from discrimination, assurance of equal pay for equal work, and enforcement of maternity protections as well as inclusive, safe work environments.

“The laws must be updated to reflect the current realities facing women in the workforce”.

Shirley Ewang, Advocacy Lead at Gatefield, also noted the imbalance in leadership representation.

“While 29 per cent of C-suite roles in Nigeria’s formal private sector are held by women, a figure that compares well globally, this statistic masks a deeper issue.

“Too few women are being recruited into formal roles to begin with, and even fewer are supported to advance,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
