The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says it is committed to strengthening service delivery among Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) through effective management of administrative data.

The Statistician-General (S-G) of the Federation, Adeyemi Adeniran, stated this during a two-day In-Boarding Training of Integrated Systems of Administrative Statistics (ISAS) and Equipment Distribution to MDAs in Abuja on Thursday.

Adeniran said the event was a strategic turning point in the nation’s journey towards a more integrated, efficient and responsive national statistics system in the country.

He noted that the administrative data system had been forgotten in silos, destroyed, incorporated and underutilised.

Adeniran, however, said with the ISAS in place now, the story would change for the better.

“The ISAS initiative represents our bold response to this long-standing challenge.

“ It is a comprehensive, historic approach to transforming how administrative data is collected, managed, shared and used across all tiers of government.

“With ISAS, we are laying the foundation for an integrated and interoperable data system where we can operationalise our data and exchange them seamlessly with our MDAs.”

The S-G said the ISAS would serve as a centralised data repository that would be accessible to policy makers, researchers and citizens at large.

He said the transformation was not merely technical but very crucial, cultural, institutional and above all, collaborative.

Adeniran said the training would equip the participants with the knowledge and tools required to engage with ISAS confidently and productively.

As part of the ISAS implementation, the S-G distributed essential equipment, both hardware and software, to support seamless integration and communication between the NBS and the MDAs

“ These tools are not just pieces of technology, they are the enablers of a new era of collaboration, data quality and institutional synergy.

“Today, we gather as co-builders of a new data ecosystem for Nigeria, one that is robust, harmonised and capable of underpinning the aspiration of good governance and sustainable development.”

Azeez Mustapha, the Project Coordinator, explained that ISAS offered the solution, which was a harmonised technology-enabled platform that integrated statistical processes and brought all the MDAs into one coordinated framework.

“Over the next two days, we will explore our ISAS works, what is expected from each of us and most importantly, how we can institutionalise this system for the long term.”

Mustapha said the participating MDAs would also sign the Data Supply Pledge, thereby committing to the regular and timely sharing of administrative data.

Victor Okafor, the World Bank Representative, said that the programme was proof of the technical and statistical advancement of MDAs as well as the country.

According to her, this is because the technology incorporated to set this up has taken us, the statistical system in Nigeria, to the next level.

Okafor said the World Bank was happy to support the project and would continue to support the development of Nigeria’s national statistics ecosystem.

Victoria Ojogbane, from the Ministry of Justice, who spoke on behalf of the participants, gave the assurance that the equipment would be used for the purpose they were given, as she thanked the NBS for their collaboration.

The News Agency of Nigeria( NAN) reports that 15 MDAs would be onboarded in the pilot phase, and they include Ministries of Petroleum Resources, Water Resources, Justice, Education, Health, and Women Affairs, and the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.

Others are the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Identity Management Commission, National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria, Nigeria Immigration Services, and the Nigeria Police Force. The Entrepreneurship Centre for Women Development (ECWD), a non-governmental organisation, has been inaugurated to promote inclusive economic growth and empower women across Nigeria.

Dr Eunice Emmanuel, President and Chief Executive Officer of ECWD, during the inauguration in Abuja, described the initiative as a symbol of hope, empowerment, and the dawn of a new era of opportunities for women.

“This centre represents more than just a physical structure, it is a dream realised, a vision fulfilled, and a promise kept.

“It stands as a symbol of our collective commitment to uplifting women and ensuring they are equipped with the skills, tools, resources, and support needed to thrive in business, leadership, and all facets of society,” she said.

Emmanuel noted that although women had long contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth, many still face barriers to financial independence and entrepreneurial success.

“ECWD is here to break those barriers, offering hands-on training, mentorship, access to markets and finance, and unwavering support to help women not just survive, but thrive and lead in various industries,” she added.

Encouraging women, she stated: “This is your space, a space for creativity, innovation, and excellence.

“Whether you are launching a startup, scaling a business, or simply exploring your potential, ECWD is here to guide, support, and walk with you every step of the way.”

Alhaji Abubakar Barau-Abdullahi, Grand Patron of ECWD and Danmadamin Zuru of Kebbi State, described women as an underutilised economic asset in Africa.

“No society can claim progress while half of its population remains economically excluded or structurally disadvantaged.

“Entrepreneurship is not just a means of livelihood; it is a tool for liberation. It gives women voice, agency, and independence.

“It allows mothers to become investors, daughters to become employers, and wives to become innovators,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of making empowerment initiatives deliberate, strategic, and sustainable.

“The ECWD is a sanctuary of dreams, a launchpad for startups, a clinic for ideas, a university of enterprise, and above all, a hub for dignity.

“The centre will serve as a platform for women to build businesses, for girls to receive mentorship, and for rural entrepreneurs to gain access to markets, technology, and capital, transforming survivors of hardship into champions of industry.

“Let us all pledge today that from ECWD will emerge the next generation of Nigerian Dangotes, Adenugas, Ibukuns, Okonjo-Iwealas, and Amina Mohammeds, powered by passion, built with purpose, and driven by resilience,” he added.

Also speaking, Malam Ali Muhammad Ali, Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), represented by Mr Kayode Olaitan, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting women’s issues.

He stated that NAN remained dedicated to promoting women-focused initiatives, empowerment programmes and inclusive development. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Old Oyo National Park, hidden gem with sustainability challenges- Conservator

Old Oyo National Park, hidden gem with sustainability challenges- Conservator

By Suleiman Shehu and Ibukun Emiola

Mr Tesleem Kareem, Conservator of Park (CP), Old Oyo National Park, has said the park, though grappling with sustainability challenges, remained one of Nigeria’s most valuable ecological and cultural treasures.

Kareem, in a special report on the park by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ibadan, disclosed the management’s commitment to ensure its profitability to all stakeholders.

While identifying the challenges, the CP also revealed some of the steps already taken and the ones being considered to mitigate the situation.

NAN reports that the park, home to a rich variety of wildlife and steeped in cultural and historical significance, spans 2,512 square kilometres of open plains in Oyo town.

Located in the South-West zone of Nigeria, the park spreads across 10 Local Government Areas in Oyo State and one in Kwara.

Its breathtaking landscapes and wealth of natural resources underscore the need for adequate funding and consistent maintenance.

The conservator says beyond its ecological value, Old Oyo National Park serves as a source of revenue for the Federal Government (FG) through tourism and research-related activities.

“It attracts visitors eager to explore its scenic beauty, study its biodiversity, and connect with the remnants of the ancient Oyo Empire that once thrived in the history of the Yoruba people,” he said.

NAN, however, reports that despite its immense potential, the park continues to battle with issues such as underfunding, poor infrastructure, security and limited public awareness.

According to Kareem, with strategic investment and renewed focus, Old Oyo National Park can become a major driver of sustainable tourism and national heritage conservation.

“The number of visitors to the park has dropped from 98 per cent to about 50 per cent, reducing revenue from 90 per cent to about 60 per cent.

“Although the park is still generating income in millions of naira, it cannot be compared with when security and the economy were better.

“In the past, when the country was okay, we generated a lot of revenue.

“If the country is secure, national and international tourists will return to the park,” he said.

The CP says the park protects biodiversity, fauna and flora, water and mountains, and uniquely promotes archaeological and historical sites.

“It preserves the cradle of the Yoruba race called Oyo Ile, where the Yoruba race started in the 17th and 18th centuries.

“Oranmiyan, as the king established the then Oyo empire,” he said.

According to the conservator, the park also encourages and provides education on wildlife and nature conservation.

“It promotes grounds for research fellows and students to, at least, experience or gain knowledge about what they are being taught.

“It serves as an outside laboratory to most wildlife institutions,” Kareem said.

Despite the park’s positive services, Kareem identified poaching, wildlife hunting, illegal logging and mining as some of its other challenges.

“Wherever you have illegal mining, it attracts banditry and kidnapping,” he said.

Kareem, however, reiterated that the park managers would not relent in their mandate of protecting, managing and conserving resources for the present and future generations.

He said the park’s collaboration with the military and other security agencies to curtail the security challenge, thereby attracting more tourists, was paying off.

“We mostly organise joint patrols to control the park,” he said.

In addition, he said the park had engaged digital and modern technology to monitor games, intruders and confront illegal activities destroying aquatic life, plants, animals and natural resources.

“We use drones, cyber trackers, sign cameras, camera traps, GPS, map reading and even helicopters for surveillance.

“These modern gadgets help to record the kinds of games that walk around and check intruders’ activities and hideouts,” he said.

However, he identified the lack of a constant power supply as a hindrance to effective and maximised technological means of securing and administering the park.

According to him, the park relies on an alternate power source, such as solar panels, to discharge its operations.

The conservator reminded the public that the Act establishing the park had empowered its officials to bear firearms.

“As a paramilitary body, we have the power to arrest and prosecute intruders who cause harm to the park,” he said.

To this end, Kareem said that about 200 offenders had been jailed since the park’s establishment in 1991, while many others enjoyed the privilege of the option of a fine.

The conservator, however, said there was no option of a fine for anyone caught by park rangers hunting or killing endangered animals such as elephants, crocodiles, hippopotamuses, lions, eagles and monkeys.

“If you kill any of these animals within the park or areas very close to the park and you are caught, there will be no option for a fine; you will be jailed,” he said.

Yet, he said not all cases ended up in courts, as some were rather handled through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) involving the supporting communities.

Kareem said the park management would, therefore, continue to work with community leaders and other societal influencers to sensitise the public on the need to protect and patronise the park.

“We need to make the public understand the rich culture of Nigeria as we work with about 115 supporting communities where the park is located,” he said.

He also called for the partnership of individuals, private institutions and Non-Governmental Organisations with the park to establish its overall benefits to humanity.

“Outside the fact that we are promoting, protecting, conserving, and preserving biodiversity, we are still promoting the culture of the people.

“So, we are appealing to all stakeholders, as this park, with its natural resources, is a capital-intensive organisation,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Economic reforms deliver growth, spur investor confidence – Bagudu

Economic reforms deliver growth, spur investor confidence – Bagudu

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, says Nigeria’s economy is witnessing a significant turnaround, driven by bold reforms, improved coordination, and a renewed focus on national priorities.

In an interview for an upcoming documentary marking President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary, he said the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda was working and winning over investors at home and abroad, Mr Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, said in a statement.

“This is two years well spent reaffirming the government’s commitment to the economic reforms.

“Mr President confronted Nigeria’s economic realities with bold and necessary choices – tough as they might be – and those measures are now yielding results,” said Bagudu.

He added that the reform-driven economy had seen four consecutive quarters of GDP growth, exchange rate stability, and a resurgence in private sector confidence.

According to him, rating agencies have consistently appreciated the efforts of the government.

He stated that foreign and domestic investors had responded positively to the government’s economic agenda, particularly agriculture, energy and infrastructure.

“We have seen investors from Brazil, Belarus, and Saudi Arabia increasingly entering our agricultural space. The world economic community and multilateral institutions are putting more faith in our economy,” said Bagudu.

According to the minister, this renewed interest stems from the administration’s commitment to credibility, transparency, and structural change.

“Investors want to see good policy – can I get paid back? Are the numbers credible? Is the environment transparent? That’s why they appreciate when they see quarterly GDP growth.

“For the first time in 25 years, Nigeria is refining oil. Mr President was courageous enough to allow crude sale in naira to our refiners. This is a testament to his belief in our economy,” he said.

Bagudu described removing fuel subsidies and unifying the foreign exchange market as transformative decisions restoring fiscal sanity.

“We were losing five per cent of our GDP on fuel subsidy – money going to just a few. Mr President took the courageous step to end it.

“The foreign exchange reform removed uncertainty and favouritism. We now have a fair market – willing buyer, willing seller – which has generated revenue growth and boosted private sector confidence,” he said.

Bagudu said the 2024 and 2025 budgets balanced fiscal responsibility and strategic investment in priority sectors.

“We have increased spending in health, education, infrastructure, security, and technology. The 2024 budget achieved significant deficit reduction, and more importantly, it showed that we are serious – and the markets believed us,” continued the minister.

He emphasised Tinubu’s respect for the rule of law, even in managing inherited debt and Central Bank financing.

He said the President inherited ₦22.7 trillion in Ways and Means financing, but he insisted on respecting the Central Bank’s independence, and that the discipline was earning the country credibility globally.

He credited the Presidential Economic Coordination Council and the Economic Management Team – led by President Tinubu and Mr Wale Edun, Coordinating Minister for the Economy – with ensuring coherent, results-driven governance.

“This is teamwork. The President is the chief coordinator. He understands the global economic context, and the private sector respects him. We’re not just doing government-to-government coordination – the private sector is part of this reform effort,” said Bagudu.

While acknowledging that the reforms may feel challenging in the short term, Bagudu likened the process to a necessary fitness regimen.

“Our economy is like a body going to the gym. It might feel painful now, but the muscles of progress are forming.

“Mr President is saying: ‘I’m ready to take the pain so our children and grandchildren will inherit a more prosperous Nigeria.’ This isn’t just economic reform – it’s a moral responsibility,” Bagudu added. (NAN)

The Oyo State Government has approved N4.5 billion as financial support to the survivors and victims of the Bodija explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024.
The state’s Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, in a statement, said the decision was taken at the executive council meeting held on Wednesday.
“This N4.5billion approved, is apart from the over N200 million that this government had expended on accommodation, feeding, hospital and security bills following the tragic incident,” Oyelade said.
Oyelade said the council has also approved the recommendation of the 10-man committee to revoke the title of the two properties, off Adeyi avenue, Bodija Ibadan, scene of the explosion.
The revocation, according to him, is in the overall interest of the public.
“The government will build a monument on the location of the revoked land in memory of victims of the tragedy.
“In addition, the council frowned at the spate of disinformation, half-truths and mischievous lies being peddled by persons purportedly representing residents of the explosion area on the role which the state government has played in the explosion saga.
“Council said such insinuations are unfair and mischievous and the government will not be discouraged in taking its time to do what is just for her citizens,” he said.
The commissioner further made it known that government will, through the Ministry of Justice, ensure effective prosecution of the suspects so far arraigned in court, in respect of the explosion.
He added that efforts were being intensified to apprehend other suspects linked to the case but were at large. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dr John Asein, the Director-General, Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), says it has become imperative to develop strategies and tools to tackle online copyright piracy in the country.

Asein said this in his opening remarks at a meeting of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)-supported project to develop strategies and tools to tackle online copyright piracy in the African digital market, on Tuesday in Abuja.

He described the initiative as a strategic intervention that would reposition Nigeria’s copyright ecosystem in the digital age, Mr Desmond Utomwen, Publicity Secretary, FCT, Association of Movie Producers of Nigeria, said in a statement.

Asein noted that identifying technical and legal gaps and providing tools to disrupt online piracy would safeguard the future of the creatives.

Stakeholders from across Nigeria’s creative industry converged in Abuja for the official kick-off meeting of the WIPO-supported project.

“Nigeria is one of only four African countries selected for the flagship initiative, aimed at strengthening legislative frameworks, building enforcement capacity, and raising public awareness around digital copyright infringement.

“The project, implemented in collaboration with the NCC, comes at a critical time when Nigeria’s thriving creative industries, particularly Nollywood, face mounting losses due to the proliferation of pirated content across digital platforms,” said the statement.

Speaking at the event, Dr Oluwatobiloba Moody, Director of the WIPO Nigeria Office, emphasised WIPO’s commitment to protecting intellectual property as a key driver of innovation and economic development.

He added that the project reflected WIPO’s deepening collaboration with African countries and shared determination to defend the rights of creators in the digital space.

Dr Queen Ebigieson, National President of the Association of Movie Producers of Nigeria (AMP), praised the initiative as a turning point for Nollywood producers who had long borne the brunt of digital piracy.

“For years, our industry has suffered economic losses, reputational damage, and creative fatigue due to online piracy.

“This project will equip producers with the legal backing, technical tools, and enforcement partnerships needed to finally push back,” Ebigieson said.

She also highlighted the importance of sustained advocacy and industry collaboration.

“We must ensure that the awareness materials and capacity-building components of this project reach grassroots filmmakers and digital content creators, not just major studios.

“The strength of Nollywood lies in its diversity and reach,” she stated.

The project overview was presented by Dr Tobias Bednarz of WIPO, while the current state of online copyright infringement in Nigeria was examined by Michael Akpan, an IP expert and the project’s National Consultant.

Dr Ioannis Kikkis, a consultant, also led a session on enforcement mechanisms in the digital environment. (NAN)
