Dangote Industries Limited is partnering critical stakeholders in the economy to grow Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria, Senior Adviser to the President of Dangote Group, Fatima Wali-Abdurrahman, has said.

Speaking at the Dangote Special Day at the ongoing 2025 Nasarawa Trade Fair Exhibition in Lafia, she said the participation of the company and partnership with the Nigeria Association of Small-Scale Industrialists (NASSI), Nasarawa State Chapter, would help create awareness and scale up small businesses.

The Senior Adviser, who was represented by Dr Shuaibu Abdullahi, the company’s National Assembly Liaison Lead, said Dangote Group would continue to partner government and private sectors to develop small businesses.

She said: “I am pleased to inform you that in alignment with the theme of this year’s Trade Fair, the Aliko Dangote Foundation and the Bank of Industry (BoI) had entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and established a N5 billion fund dedicated to supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria.

“This initiative aimed to create at least one million direct jobs by providing financial support to entrepreneurs engaged in manufacturing, agro-processing, and the merchandising of goods made wholly in Nigeria.”

She added that the MoU would benefit micro-enterprises like cassava processors, aluminum artisans, poultry farmers, calabash carving groups, small traders, cattle rearing groups, vegetable sellers, market women and artisan groups.

She said as part for its support for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria, the company had supported Jakura Marble Industry Ltd (JMIL) in electrification.

She added that in line with the company’s commitment to supporting small businesses, agriculture, and job creation in Nigeria, Dangote Fertiliser Limited had initiated a comprehensive training programme targeting over one million farmers across the country.

“This programme, integral to our agricultural extension services, encompasses Spot Demonstrations, Result Demonstrations, Field Demonstrations, and Soil Sample Collections.

“The training is designed to educate farmers on best practices in fertiliser application, aiming to enhance crop yields and promote sustainable farming techniques.

“By providing hands-on demonstrations and soil analysis, we strive to empower farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary to improve their productivity and livelihoods.”

According to her, the company’s supports for fostering economic development through mineral and agricultural cottage industrialisation” is numerous.

“May I also inform this esteemed audience that our sponsorship of numerous Trade Fairs—including this one organised by the Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists (NASSI)—is a key component of our commitment to fostering the growth of trade and small businesses across Nigeria.

“By supporting this Trade Fair, we aim to provide micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with platforms to showcase their products, network with potential partners, and access new markets, thereby contributing to the nation’s economic development.

“As a company, we are therefore joining NASSI and NACCIMA to call on the public and private sector stakeholders to prioritise MSMES in Nigeria. This is key to our industrialisation effort in Nigeria.”

According to her, some of the Strategic Business Units that are participating from the Dangote Group are: Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL), Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited (DPAN), Dangote SinoTruck, Dangote Sugar Refinery (DSR), Dangote Salt (NASCON) and Dangote Cement Plc.(NAN)

Alfa Designs secures NMDPRA’s approval to convert diesel engines to CNG

Alfa Designs secures NMDPRA’s approval to convert diesel engines to CNG

By Emmanuella Anokam

Alfa Designs Nigeria Limited, a leading oil and gas company, says it has secured approval to begin conversion of diesel-powered engines to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the country.

The company said the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had done the Proof of Concept (POC) on its conversion kits and granted a five-year licence to deploy the kits.

Mr Quadri Fatai, Group Managing Director, Alfa Designs Nigeria Limited, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

Fatai said that the conversion would enable all diesel-powered, trucks, vehicles, engines, generators and draggers to be converted to a dual fuel-powered system.

According to the chief executive officer, the dual fuel powered system will be used interchangeably, because the conversion is not 100 per cent CNG.

Fatai disclosed that the conversion kits had a device, called Telematrix that would be installed alongside the components of the conversion kits, which could assist in automatic tracking of converted vehicles or engines.

“So, basically we already have the kits after following up all the necessary protocols to get the kits approved by the regulator.

“And then the kits also have a very fantastic device called Telematrix to be installed alongside the kits.

“The Telematrix actually enables one to assess the condition of the engine, equipment or vehicle and also to be able to track their location via online.’’

He said the device could help an engine user in terms of maintenance, and could also help the Federal Government in tracking tankers while supplying and distributing petroleum products.

“Instead of having too many securities on the way, trying to track the tankers that are meant to supply products, installing kits with the Telematrix will guarantee security and bring down high logistics cost.

“After conversion, the Telematrix reveals the real-time amount of diesel of which an engine is consuming and the amount of gas it is actually consuming.

“And if anyone tampers with the device, it will also reflect that it has been tampered with.’’

Fatai said the dual conversion ratio in terms of 30 per cent diesel and 70 per cent CNG would definitely bring down the cost of logistics.

“The advantage is that it will bring down the volume of the diesel and assists the engine to have a complete combustion, because while burning only diesel, there is possibility that the engine’s condition might not have a complete combustion.

“Most of the diesel engines produce carbon soot, a thick smoke, which is a sign that the engines are having incomplete combustion, causing a whole lot of pollution.’’

He said that the company was also partnering with one of the biggest CNG-powered generator manufacturing company in China to deploy generators for its facilities.

Speaking on the cost of the conversion, he said the price would only be ascertained after evaluating the vehicle or engine because factors such as the size and condition of the engines would be put into consideration.

“The conversion price will be based on the capacity and specification of the engine that is being converted.

“But the savings you are going to make by installing the kits on your system and operating it at long duration will have a repay back in less than three months because CNG is costs effective,’’ he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Emissions: Expert advocates winding down of diesel-powered engines

Emissions: Expert advocates winding down of diesel-powered engines

An Energy Expert, Mr Quadri Fatai has advocated winding down of diesel-powered engines in the country in reducing Green House Gas (GHG) and fugitive methane emissions by 60 per cent.

Fatai, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Alfa Design Nigeria Limited gave the advice on Monday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Abuja.

He noted that converting diesel-powered engines to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or transiting to alternative cleaner/greener energy and technology would stop carbon soot being emitted by diesel engines and guarantee energy security.

He said that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) guidelines on GHG emissions were aimed at reducing environmental and social impact, caused by the emissions of components of natural gas including methane and other compounds.

The expert explained that embracing cleaner technology would help to mitigate carbon output, especially carbon soot being emitted by a fuel engine, contributing majorly to environmental pollution and health hazards.

”As it is now, we are supposed to be winding down on all diesel-powered engines in the country based on the GHG emissions statement.

”Nigerian government had already pledged that by 2030 we are going to cut down our methane emissions, and we are going to stop flaring completely and also do away with carbon soot formation, a bye-product from diesel-fired engines.

”We have to do away with all these things because they normally absorb infrared radiation that comes from the outer space. Once they absorb it, they keep the earth warmer than what is anticipated.

”And that’s the effect on the climate change,’’ he said.

Fatai also explained that in view of high cost of diesel and the abundance of an alternative energy (gas) in the country, there was need to be economically wise and encourage usage of CNG.

”But staring us in our face is a solution of an alternative that all of us are supposed to come out and really agitate to see how this can be implemented as soon as possible to reduce impact, ” he said.

He added that in the bid to promote cleaner and affordable energy in the country, the Alfa design limited, a leading oil and gas company would soon begin conversion of diesel-powered engines to CNG in the country.

NAN recalls that Nigeria signed on to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in Sept. 2016; and consequently, began the implementation of many ambitious initiatives aimed at reducing emissions from all sectors of the economy.

As part of Nigeria’s commitment on the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement, in 2021, it committed to reducing GHG emissions by 47 per cent in 2030, conditional on international support.

The pledge followed the signing into law of the country’s first climate bill after the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties 26, in Glasgow in 2021, having set an ambitious global net zero targets by 2060.

To achieve Nigeria’s emission reduction targets of the NDCs, the key abatement measures are; elimination of routine gas flaring (100 per cent gas flaring eliminated by 2030) and fugitive emissions/leakages control (60 per cent Methane Reduction by 2030).

These measures were established under the NUPRC operators’ guidelines on the actions and mechanisms for the management of fugitive methane/GHG emissions from the upstream oil and gas operations. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, Head of Service of the Federation, says the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved Group Life Assurance Scheme for government workers, paramilitary and uniformed personnel.

Walson-Jack said through the Insurance Scheme, the Federal Government would provide a life policy for each public servant, and that in the event of death, public servant’s next-of-kin would have a benefit to help the family cushion the effect of the loss.

“This scheme underscores the importance that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has placed on the welfare of the federal workers.

“This year, the group life assurance scheme covers key government officials, comprising Mr President, the Vice President, the Chief of Staff, and the secretary to the government of the Federation.

“The other beneficiaries are: Ministers, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, permanent secretaries and staff of federal government ministries and treasury funded agencies,” she stated.

According to her, the scheme also covers the para military agencies such as Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Correctional Service, the Federal Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Office of the National Security Adviser.

She added that the Group Life Insurance Scheme was an annual one, and that the approval given by FEC was for the 2025/2026 policy year, and the policy would commence from the date of payment of premium to underwriters in line with the no premium, no cover policy.

“The approval for today was for the appointment of 17 insurance underwriters for the group life insurance cover and for the year 2025/2026 as I had earlier mentioned.

“The premium is paid to the insurance companies for 12 months. So, this policy will expire in 2026. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government has announced that gender mainstreaming will be a key guiding principle in its ongoing labour reforms.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Muhammad Dingyadi, made this known while delivering the keynote address at the 2025 Senior Officers’ Conference of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, on Monday in Keffi.

The conference is themed, “Reforming Labour Administration System in Nigeria.”

Dingyadi stated that integrating gender considerations into labour reforms would ensure equal access to employment opportunities for women and vulnerable groups, free from discrimination.

He added that other core principles of the reform included strengthening institutional capacity, digitising service delivery, enhancing tripartite collaboration, improving occupational safety and health coverage, and reinforcing accountability and compliance mechanisms.

Speaking further, the minister said the conference theme not only reflected the ministry’s current priorities but also aligned with the national goal of leveraging human capital for sustainable development and global competitiveness.

He noted that changing global work patterns, technological innovation, demographic shifts, climate change, and globalisation were reshaping the workplace, including how, where, and when people work.

Dingyadi emphasised the need for the ministry to adapt to the changes by building a resilient, inclusive, and transparent labour administration system that met the demands of modern Nigeria.

He described the conference as a timely opportunity to reflect, reset, and renew commitment to decent work and equitable labour practices.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Salihu Usman, highlighted the need for Nigeria to re-evaluate its labour system to keep pace with global changes.

He stressed that technological advancements such as Artificial Intelligence and emerging workplace trends had transformed the world of work, and the conference presented a platform to reposition Nigeria’s labour administration accordingly. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ukraine ready for talks with Russia —Zelenskyy

Ukraine ready for talks with Russia —Zelenskyy

Ukraine is ready to hold direct talks with Russia once Moscow confirms a “full, lasting and reliable” ceasefire in his country starting on Monday, the Ukrainian president said on Sunday.

“There is no point in continuing the killing even for a single day. We expect Russia to confirm a ceasefire – full, lasting, and reliable – starting tomorrow, May 12th,” Zelenskyy said on X on Sunday.

“Ukraine is ready to meet. It is a positive sign that the Russians have finally begun to consider ending the war.

“The entire world has been waiting for this for a very long time. And the very first step in truly ending any war is a ceasefire,” he said.

Later on Telegram, Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, clarified that a 30-day ceasefire must first be established for “everything else.”

“Russia should not disguise its desire to continue the war under verbal constructions,” Yermak said.

He argued that a ceasefire was the first step towards ending the conflict, and that Moscow’s confirmation of this would affirm its readiness to do so.

In response to Zelenskyy’s remarks, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: “(Russian President Vladimir) Putin clearly said: first, negotiations on the root causes (of the conflict), and then we can talk about a truce,” Zakharova said.

During an overnight news conference in Moscow, Putin proposed the resumption of direct peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul starting on Thursday.

In a phone call with Putin on Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country was ready to host the negotiations, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.

On Saturday, Zelenskyy and European leaders, in a joint statement following talks in Kyiv, urged Russia to agree to a “full and unconditional” 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

The statement said the call was also supported by the U.S., and warned that “stronger sanctions” should be imposed on Moscow if it did not agree.

Türkiye has played an active role in efforts to reach a settlement in the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022.

This includes hosting a series of talks in Istanbul aimed at finding common ground to end the conflict, now in its fourth year.(AA/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ponzi scheme victims lament loss, seek SEC’s urgent action

Ponzi scheme victims lament loss, seek SEC’s urgent action

By Ginika Okoye

Some victims of Ponzi schemes have lamented their losses on their investment worth billions of Naira.

Some of the victims, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, also appealed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to step up actions against the schemes by fishing out and stopping them early before they achieve their dubious aim.

They also advised citizens against investing in the platforms, saying their operations were filled with cruelty and criminality.

Mr Ikenna Osuoha, a victim of one of the schemes, said he was swindled of his hard earned money of more than N700,000.

Osuoha alleged that some operatives of the scheme known as ‘e-wet connect’ had threatened him when he confronted them with his reports to SEC and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He said that the company was still going around organising seminars and workshops for citizens in states.

“I want to use this medium to alert Nigerians of illicit operation of some Ponzi schemes which I am a victim of.

“I have been swindled of my hard-earned money amounting to over N700,000 and my wife over N100,000 which was part of our children’s school fees.

“When I was prospective, I tried and I got some money, I invested N120,000 and I got N240,000 but I never knew it was a bait.

“I continued and invested more money.

“What I want Nigerians to know is that these people operating these schemes are so hardened, cruel, criminalised to the extent that they were telling me to look for 50 per cent of what I am expecting again to bring more money to them.

“With impunity, they are threatening me and saying that all the security agencies are under their control,” he said.

Osuoha called on SEC to investigate and burst the scheme because they are swindling innocent Nigerians.

“I am also calling on Nigerians to beware of such schemes as their modus operandi is to organise seminars, workshops,” he said.

Mr Emmanuel Atuma, a victim of the recent Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX), said he lost 300 dollars to the scheme.

Atuma, who wondered why CBEX resumed its operations, called on SEC and the necessary regulatory actions to take decisive steps toward bringing the operators to book

He said that bringing CBEX operators to book would serve as a deterrent to those planning to lure people into the scheme.

“The Investment and Securities Tribunal must ensure they facilitate the judgment of any Ponzi scheme case brought before it so that others will learn,” he said.

Mrs Elizabeth Okechukwu, a victim of the Mavrodi, Mavrodi, and Melnikova (MMM) Ponzi scheme, said that citizens fell prey to the scheme due to greed and undue quest for money.

Okechukwu advised citizens to quit money doubling mind-set and work for their monies.

Ms Osaro Musa, a business lady, said she invested her trade settlement money in a Ponzi scheme thinking it would double so that she could use it to start up her own business.

“These people are so heartless. They collected my money and promised to double the N100,000 I got from my Madam after serving her for six years.

“It was so frustrating that I had to do so many things to replace the money,” she said.

Meanwhile, SEC had vowed to take decisive action against illegal fund operators and prosecute those who refused to stop their fraudulent activities.

Ms Frana Chukwuogor, the Commission’s Executive Commissioner, Legal and Enforcement said “we want to saturate everywhere, saturation is my favourite word, it means that there will be no room to do anything more.

“We are here to spend time with people having realised that the issue of Ponzi schemes menace is affecting and spreading all over the place and they are deceiving and collecting peoples’ money, especially from traders in the market.
“We have seen people lose their life savings, their businesses, and their peace of mind.
“That is why we are taking this message to the markets, motor parks, online platforms—anywhere Nigerians are making financial decisions because prevention through education is our first line of defence,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

A mother, Mrs Eunice Bright said her joy of welcoming twins into the world has turned into a painful ordeal filled with confusion and heartbreak.

She has accused Dr Timothy Zeje of Divine Reign Clinic, Sauka, Abuja, of stealing one of her babies shortly after delivery-a claim the doctor denies.

Narrating her ordeal to newsmen in Abuja, Bright said she began her pregnancy hopeful and excited.

According to her, early scans at Divine Reign Clinic confirmed she was carrying twins, a joyous revelation she eagerly shared with her husband.

“I did my scan at the hospital, and Dr Zeje told me I was carrying twins. This was confirmed again the following month,” she recounted.

She said her anticipation turned to shock on June 11, 2022, when she underwent a Caesarean section at the clinic when after the surgery, she was handed only one baby.

“I asked for my twins, but my husband told me only one child was given to him. I was shocked,” she said.

Bright was told the second baby was sick and placed on life support, but later a nurse informed her the baby had died shortly after birth.

“They said the doctor stopped them from telling me because I was still recovering.

I am still struggling to come to terms with the loss and why my husband who had been in the hospital was not informed and handed the dead child for burial.”

Bright said her grief deepened when she later saw a baby with the doctor’s wife who looked exactly like her missing child, even sharing distinctive dreadlocks.

“I noticed the baby looked just like mine, when we confronted the doctor, he refused to release my child.”

Advocates like Mr DonClem Enamhe of “Who is Who in the Northern Cross River State” have expressed support for Mrs Bright, calling for a DNA test to establish the truth and ensure justice.

“No Nigerian should be intimidated or denied their rights, regardless of social standing.

“Mrs Bright’s story shines a light on the vulnerability of mothers and the critical need for transparency and accountability in healthcare.”

He pledged his organisation’s support to family to ensure that justice is done in the matter.

When contacted, Zeje told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was aware of the allegations against him but denied it.

He told NAN that the matter was being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department of Nigeria police, FCT Command. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Sen. Oluremi Tinubu has inaugurated a 100-bed Mother and Child Centre at Awo-Omamma General Hospital near Owerri, Imo.

The state-of-the-art facility, constructed by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), and named the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Mother and Child Centre, was inaugurated on Saturday.

The inauguration was performed on behalf of the First Lady by Hajia Nana Shettima, the Wife of the Vice President, Mr Desmond Utomwen, Special Adviser, Publicity and Strategic Communication, OSSAP-SDGs, said in a statement on Sunday.

She said that the inauguration was a critical milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

“This centre reflects the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to delivering quality healthcare to Nigerians, particularly women and children.

“We must continue to prioritise maternal and child healthcare as a foundation for a healthier and more prosperous society,” she said.

She called on women and families in the surrounding communities to take full advantage of the healthcare services offered at the centre and to take ownership of the facility to ensure its sustainability.

She also extended gratitude to health workers, particularly nurses and midwives, who continue to play a vital role in improving maternal and child outcomes across the country.

The First Lady further commended the efforts of Imo State Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, and his wife, Chioma Uzodimma, for their dedication to the wellbeing of the people.

She praised the leadership of Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, for spearheading the implementation of impactful, pro-poor interventions across the nation.

The newly inaugurated hospital, sited within the Awo-Omamma General Hospital, features a comprehensive suite of healthcare amenities.

They include private and general wards, an operating theatre, recovery rooms, consultation units, scanning rooms, adult and paediatric intensive care units, a laboratory, ultrasound machines, emergency carts, delivery kits, and vacuum extractors.

Gov. Uzodimma, in his remarks, hailed the project as a timely and strategic intervention that addressed critical gaps in the state’s health sector.

He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his leadership and for recognising the health and dignity of mothers and children as national priorities.

“Naming this centre after Sen. Oluremi Tinubu is not only a well-deserved honour but a lasting reminder of her compassion, advocacy, and service to women and vulnerable groups.

“This facility is a major boost to our state’s integrated health infrastructure plan and will significantly reduce maternal and child mortality,” he said.

Orelope-Adefulire noted that the 100-bed facility is one of several built under the OSSAP-SDGs programme to strengthen sub-national healthcare systems.

She stressed that the hospital was conceived and delivered as part of the SDGs’ commitment to ensuring no Nigerian is left behind in accessing quality health services.

“This centre is a testimony to the First Lady’s enduring commitment to the welfare of mothers, children, and vulnerable populations, an ethos she upheld even before assuming her current office,” she said.

Highlighting findings from the Nigeria SDGs Progress Report 2024, she lamented that outcomes for maternal and child health remain below target.

She called for intensified advocacy to ensure pregnant women attend antenatal and postnatal clinics and that children receive timely vaccinations.

“This facility will commence full services within the next two to three months and is equipped to deliver quality care at all levels.

“We urge Imo State and its residents to embrace this intervention and make judicious use of it in a sustainable manner,” she said.

Orelope-Adefulire announced that her office would return to Imo in June for an empowerment initiative targeting women in the South-East region.

She reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening federal-state collaboration in delivering SDG-aligned projects.

The Imo State Government provided the land for the project, underscoring the collaborative effort between federal and state authorities.

The initiative is a response to existing healthcare challenges and a step toward a future where every mother and child can live healthier, more dignified lives. (NAN)
