Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his visionary leadership and commitment to transforming Nigeria’s economy and labour force.

Speaking at the 2025 May Day celebration in Abeokuta, Abiodun praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, which he said have repositioned the nation toward growth and stability.

Held at the Cultural Centre, the event echoed this year’s theme: ‘Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship.’

The governor noted that the May Day gathering highlights the enduring relationship between workers and government as partners in national development.

He credited Tinubu’s policies for inspiring the Nigerian workforce to increased productivity and driving progress across various sectors.

Abiodun said inflation is dropping, the naira is stable, and the economy is rebounding — clear signs of Nigeria’s upward trajectory under Tinubu’s leadership.

“Asiwaju’s policies have improved workers’ welfare, competitiveness, and output,” he said, hailing the President’s role in strengthening the labour force.

He called on workers to support both federal and state governments in building a nation worthy of emulation and global respect.

The governor commended the Ogun chapters of the NLC and TUC for maintaining industrial peace over the past 15 months.

“I applaud all labour unions in Ogun for ensuring a protest-free, harmonious workplace environment,” Abiodun said.

He promised that the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration would take place in a brand-new pavilion dedicated to honouring Ogun’s workforce.

Highlighting achievements, Abiodun said his administration has created a business-friendly climate attracting world-class investors to the state.

He affirmed continued support for retirees, revealing that N79.9 billion in pensions had been cleared for state and local council workers.

The governor added that over 5,000 affordable housing units have been delivered, alongside N8 billion in palliatives for workers and retirees.

“These funds eased the impact of PMS price hikes and reinforced our commitment to workers’ welfare,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State has hailed workers in the state for their sacrifices and industrial harmony in the state.

The governor stated this during the 2025 Workers’ Day Celebration on Thursday in Enugu with the theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship.”

Mbah, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Victor Udeh, said that he had always demonstrated commitment to the improvement of their welfare.

Mbah said that his administration approved the promotion and conversion of over 2,000 workers who were successful in the 2024 promotion and interviews.

“I paid palliative even after the Federal Government and other states had stopped and payment of N80,000 minimum wage to workers in the state including local government workers.

“I approved payment of gratuity upon retirement from the state public service, provision of compressed natural gas buses for the benefit of Enugu State workers and other residents.

“We also restored power supply at the State Secretariat Complex and introduction of E-governance in the state bureaucracy,” Mbah said.

He explained that his administration could not considerately grow Enugu State into a 30-billion-dollar economy without a dedicated workforce.

“So, our development and glorious future that we envision require collective work.

“On our part, we will continue to motivate our workers because a motivated workforce is a productive workforce,” the governor said.

Speaking, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Enugu Chapter, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, said the minimum wage received by workers in Enugu did not contain consequential adjustment.

He said: “We are so happy that Mbah gave Enugu workers minimum wage above national minimum wage but a minimum wage without a consequential adjustment is not complete.

So, we are pleading with him to consider and direct that a consequential adjustment be part of minimum wage we receive.

“We are praying that he uses his good heart to consider our plight and direct that a consequential adjustment be paid to workers of Enugu State,” Nwigbo said.

He commended the governor for his numerous developmental strides, calling on him to ensure that after the pensioners’ verification, the payment of gratuity arrears to all retirees comprising state, local government, primary school, parastatals and others commence without delay.

“We are also urging him to direct the payment of pension arrears to retirees of state parastatals, primary schools, and local governments.

“We are also appealing to him to approve the payment of domestic servant allowances for Deputy Directors and Directors using the N80,000 minimum wage, rather than the outdated N30,000,

“To reconsider and approve the commencement of annual leave allowance payments to workers as well as construction of low-cost housing for workers, given the housing deficit and high cost of rent in our state,” he added.

Speaking on the theme, Nwigbo expressed the need for workers to speak out, protest against unfair treatment, engage employers of labour whenever the need arises, demand accountability, and defend their rights.

“As workers grapple with untold hardship occasioned by increasing costs of living, stagnant wages, and unemployment, today’s theme emerges both as a call to action and a rallying point for advocacy and change,” he stressed.

The labour leader also urged Mbah to prioritise the training and retraining of workers to enhance productivity and approve the completion of the new Secretariat for NLC and TUC in line with his policy of completing abandoned projects.

On his part, the Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Enugu Chapter, Comrade Benneth Asogwa, added that the issue of consequential adjustment was an ingredient of the minimum wage.

“If you did not approve consequential adjustment, it is like a good food without salt as it gives the minimum wage the structure it deserves and makes it a true salary.

“A singluar amount for everybody is more of wage award but we trust in His Excellency and believe that in due time he will direct for consequential adjustment, Asogwa said.

He reiterated the workers’ resolve to continue to support his administration by ensuring that the government policies and programmes aimed at taking Enugu State to an enviable height are diligently implemented. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

May Day: Oyebanji pledges commitment to workers’ welfare

Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has pledged the commitment of his administration to prioritising workers’ welfare in the state.

The governor made the pledge on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, while speaking at the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration.

Oyebanji said he had always made issues of workers’ welfare a top priority of his government, saying the tempo would continue throughout his tenure.

He commended the workers in the state for their support for his administration, saying their commitment to friendly dialogues had enabled his government to act promptly on issues.

The governor also promised to do all within his powers to continually restore the workers’ dignity and pride, through the provision of civil space in the state.

The State NLC Chairman, Kolapo Olatunde, while commending Oyebanji for running a worker-friendly administration, called for consolidated security architecture in order to protect life and property.

“The security situation in the country calls for sincere prayers, and consolidated security architecture that will bring turnaround approach that will bring positive results, in order to safeguard lives and property of hapless Nigerians.

“The persistent incidences of kidnapping, heart-wrenching killing of farmers by armed herdsmen and heartless killings in some parts of Benue and Plateau States are condemnable.

“We, therefore, call on the security apparatus in Nigeria and across the states of the federation to rise to this challenge and take decisive action that will stem the tide.

“This is our clarion call; our farmlands must be safe, our people must be able to go about their lawful businesses without fear; workers in Nigeria especially in the troubling areas should leave home for work and be sure of returning safely to their families,” he pleaded.

On his part, the State TUC Chairman, Sola Adigun, also expressed displeasure at the workers’ inability to hold political leaders accountable, “as a result of the threats targeted at civil space by certain leaders.”

Adigun noted that this infringement on civic freedom had further made workers vulnerable to attacks, while non-state actors, whose interests remained shadowy, interfere in workers’ struggles.

“Perhaps, even more worrying is the systematic shrinking of the civic space. Our right to organise, to protest peacefully, to speak without fear, and to hold our leaders accountable is increasingly under attack.

“Trade union activities are frequently disrupted by security agencies, while non-state actors-whose interests remain shadowy-interfere in workers’ struggles.

“And this assault on civic freedoms is happening precisely at a time when the voices of the people are needed more than ever to demand change.

“To reclaim the civic space in this era of economic hardship, we must act-strategically and courageously,” he stated. (NAN)(www.nannews.com)

Nigeria must intensify strategies to achieve sustainable devt – Gbajabiamila

Nigeria must intensify strategies to achieve sustainable devt – Gbajabiamila

By Salif Atojoko

The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, says Nigeria must intensify its internal strategies to achieve sustainable development with shrinking global multilateral cooperation.

Gbajabiamila said this during the official validation of the 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR), the inauguration of Nigeria SDGs Progress Report 2024 and unveiling of Inclusive Data Charter (IDC) Action Plan, on Wednesday in Abuja.

“In a shrinking multilateral space, we must look inwards for sustainable solutions to our economic, social and environmental challenges,” he stated.

Gbajabiamila underscored the vital role of the SDGs as a strategic framework to guide these efforts.

He noted that Nigeria’s commitment – demonstrated by the successful conduct of VNRs in 2017, 2020, and now 2025 – reflected the government’s resolve to meet the 2030 target.

He commended Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, for her tireless leadership in coordinating the process.

He explained that the 2025 VNR followed six regional consultations held in March 2025 across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

He said exercise assessed progress, identified gaps, and gathered input for the upcoming High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the United Nations in July.

He explained that the consultations underscored the importance of inclusive, participatory, and evidence-based approaches to fast tracking the implementation of SDG.

Gbajabiamila also called on ministries, departments, agencies, development partners, the private sector, academia and civil society to deepen collaboration and mobilise resources to ensure no one was left behind in Nigeria’s sustainable development journey.

He reiterated the Tinubu administration’s unwavering commitment to the SDGs, describing sustainable development as a cardinal objective within the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He conveyed President Tinubu’s best wishes, noting his strong interest in achieving the SDGs.

“When world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, they envisioned a just and truly egalitarian society where no one is left behind.

“Achieving the SDGs will mean ending poverty and hunger, safeguarding our ecosystem and ensuring our people live in peace and prosperity by 2030 and beyond,” Gbajabiamila said.

In her welcome address, Orelope-Adefulire told stakeholders that the national validation workshop reinforced Nigeria’s deepening commitment to the 2030 Agenda.

She noted that nearly a decade after the adoption of the SDGs at the 70th UN General Assembly, Nigeria continued to demonstrate resolve in achieving them.

She referenced the 2024 United Nations SDGs Report, which showed that only 17 per cent of global targets were on track, with developing countries and the poorest populations bearing the greatest burdens.

“Lack of progress towards the SDGs is universal, but developing countries and the world’s poorest people are bearing the brunt,” she remarked.

Orelope-Adefulire described the VNR process as a critical component of the HLPF review mechanism, offering transparency and accountability at the national level.

She noted that Nigeria’s 2025 VNR was the product of extensive consultations across all six geopolitical zones.

She said the consultations included targeted engagements with persons with disabilities, youth and children.

“This national validation workshop not only reaffirms our commitment to the 2030 Agenda but also demonstrates our resolve to ground implementation in inclusive, evidence based, and participatory principles,” she said.

She urged participants to critically assess the VNR’s findings and recommendations to ensure a robust final report.

The Nigeria SDGs Progress Report 2024, unveiled at the workshop, provided a detailed goal-by-goal analysis of achievements and setbacks, while offering strategic recommendations for policymakers at all levels.

Orelope-Adefulire also announced the inauguration of Nigeria’s Inclusive Data Charter Action Plan 2024, developed in partnership with the National Bureau of Statistics and Sightsavers Nigeria.

“Our commitment to leaving no one behind must be data driven and evidence based,” she said.

She added that the IDC Plan reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to disaggregated and inclusive data systems as the foundation of accountable development.

She praised the Multi-Stakeholder Core Working Group for its coordination of the VNR process, acknowledging its diverse membership spanning government agencies, the UN system, civil society, academia, and the disability community.

She also thanked Sightsavers Nigeria for its support in ensuring the active participation of persons with disabilities.

Mr Mohamed Fall, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, delivered a goodwill message in which he commended the Federal Government for its inclusive approach to the VNR and reiterated the UN’s ongoing technical and financial support.

“With less than five years remaining, the SDGs are globally off track. But Nigeria’s participatory approach gives us hope that the course can still be corrected,” he stated.

Fall highlighted Nigeria’s role among the 39 countries presenting VNRs at the 2025 HLPF, offering a platform to showcase transformative and science-based strategies.

He urged the workshop to produce actionable recommendations to address challenges such as poverty, inequality and climate change.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) echoed similar sentiments.

Represented by Mr Eghosa Omoigui, Assistant Director, Mr Abdulateef Shittu, NGF Director General, cited subnational progress from Kwara, Lagos, Gombe and Edo states as proof of local innovation driving change.

“Resource gaps, data limitations, and climate impacts test our resilience, but they sharpen our resolve to act smarter and leave no one behind,” he said.

He added that the NGF was committed to supporting states in localising the SDGs through innovation, partnerships and knowledge sharing.

He urged participants to transform the validation process into a renewed commitment to the 2030 Agenda, stressing, “Nigeria’s story is one of resilience, partnership, and the promise of delivering on sustainable development.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

A Civil Society Organization (CSO), Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC), has urged workers to unite against all forms of corruption for national progress.

Chief Ugochukwu Nnam, President of the CSO, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in commemoration of Workers’ Day in Abuja on Thursday.

While congratulating workers on May Day, Nnam said that trade unions and civil servants could play a crucial role in advocating for anti-corruption policies.

‘This is possible by supporting workers who report corruption.

“Refusing to pay bribes, resisting demands for bribes, even when facing pressure, can help disrupt corrupt practices,” he said.

Nnam, who commended workers for their dedication to the development of Nigeria, said that workers play a crucial role in fighting corruption through reporting unethical behaviour.

He advised workers to be active in the fight against corruption by implementing robust whistleblower protections, and promoting transparency and accountability within their organisations and communities.

According to him, these efforts can help create a culture of integrity and discourage corrupt practices.

The ILDC president who commended President Tinubu for his commitment in addressing the plight of workers, urged workers to continue to support him.

He acknowledged the present economic challenges, expressing hope that it would soon be over.

Nnam said that the future of workers and Nigerians generally was bright with ongoing economic reforms of the federal government.

He urged Nigerians not to give up in their selfless service to national progress as there’s light at the end of the tunnel. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Gender inclusion key to trade policy – Minister

Gender inclusion key to trade policy – Minister

Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, has stated the reason for mainstreaming gender inclusion in industrial and trade policy.

Oduwole made this known on Thursday in Lagos at The Covenant Nation Platform Africa Women in Leadership and Women in Business Conference.

The minister noted that women, when equipped with the tools, networks and opportunities, do not just participate; they lead, grow, and multiply value.

She added that women in leadership positions are more likely to prioritise collaboration, invest in social infrastructure, and lead with empathy and inclusion.

Oduwole noted that companies with more women in leadership outperform their peers and countries with more inclusive policies grow faster and more equitably.

“Leadership is not a gendered gift, but the absence of women in leadership is a loss, not just for women, but for society.

“That is why I have mainstreamed gender inclusion in industrial and trade policy.

“Whether we are designing Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) support funds, shaping trade facilitation strategies, or negotiating under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), we must ask: where are the women? This is because that is smart economics.

“The business of the future is female and Africa’s future will be driven by women in business,” she said.

Oduwole stated that while women account for nearly 60 per cent of Africa’s self-employed population, they face systemic barriers in accessing finance, markets and formal structures.

According to her, as Africa rethinks, the continent must begin to reimagine an economy that truly works for women.

She said the continent must be guided by a system where startup capital does not require collateral women are statistically less likely to own, and where policies are not gender-blind but gender-intentional.

“It must be supported by a system where leadership is not something women have to prove they are worthy of, but something we collectively cultivate, mentor and support at every level,” she said.

Oduwole said that her leadership journey had been shaped by a deep commitment to driving transformative change and impact within Nigeria’s economic growth.

She noted that her strong foundation in financial systems and business strategy provided a clear lens into how capital moved and how economic structures shaped national development.

“Together, these experiences have shaped my approach to leadership; rooted in evidence, equity, and a belief in Africa’s capacity to compete and thrive globally.

“I hope my leadership legacy reflects the power of systemic change, and I want to be remembered for caring enough to sacrifice many things to build a more resilient, equitable and sustainable business environment in Nigeria and Africa,” she said.

Oduwole also advised women to henceforth mentor with intention, collaborate across borders and lead with purpose. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi has announced N10,000 May-Day celebration gift to the workers in the state.

Nwifuru made the disclosure at the occasion of the May-Day in Abakaliki on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2025 Workers’ Day is tagged: “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economics Hardship”.

The governor described the workers as “engine room” of government and pledged his continued support to their well-being.

“I will remain indebted to the workers in the state and under my watch, workers will remain a symbol of excellence.

“Today’s May-Day celebration is the reflection of workers contributions to nation building.

“I understand the challenges you face; my administration is committed to tackling them. We are committed to promoting conducive civic space for workers.

“We must stay together as partners in progress for a better Ebonyi,” he said.

Earlier, Prof. Ogugua Egwu, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Mr Chidi Igboji of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), in a joint address, commended Nwifuru especially on the implementation of the N75,000 minimum wage.

On the unions demand from the governor, they expressed worry on delay to deploy shuttle busses to the state secretariat, Centenary City.

“The workers in the state are in serious need of improved housing projects due to the high cost of rentage in the state. Provide more housing estates for our members.

“There is need to increase the pension of retirees as it’s obtainable in other parts of the country. Equip government offices in the secretariat, among others,” the Organised Labour Union added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday thanked Nigerian workers for their patriotism, perseverance and promised to cushion economic hardship.

Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammed  Dingyadi, said this at the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja.

The President described workers as the “backbone of our society, whose dedication and resilience drive the engine of the Nigerian economy and uphold the values of our dear nation.”

He said the  government recognised the contributions of the organised labour in fostering dialogue, promoting workers’ rights, and ensuring that their voices are always heard, loud and clear.

Tinubu said the theme for this year’s May Day celebrations,”Reclaiming the civic space in the midst of economic hardship” demanded a collective attention.

He added that the theme served as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute most productively to the growth and prosperity of the nation.

“As your president, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating conducive climate for the common good of all of us.

“Economic hardship is a global phenomenon, cut across all regions, testing the resolve of world leaders, but has not broken our spirit,” he said.

The President said the government was well aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship for Nigerians occasioned by struggles and challenges of workers and indeed many Nigerians.

“These ranges from a rising cost of living, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, loss of livelihood, and pressure to provide necessities for your families, amongst others.

“These challenges are real, critical, and demand definite solutions, which I, as your president, am poised to address,” he said.

The President assured his administration’s commitment to implementing deliberate policies aimed at promoting job creation, decent jobs, poverty alleviation, economic growth and stability.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable.

Speaking on the theme of the day, Tinubu underscored the need for reclaiming the civic space, “where ideas are exchanged, voices are heard, and change is born”.

“A vibrant civic space is the cornerstone of democracy, and it is essential for holding leaders’ accountable, fostering innovation, and ensuring every Nigerian has a seat at the table.

“Therefore, to reclaim this space, we must prioritise transparency, inclusivity, equity, and dialogue.

“We must protect the rights of workers to organise, advocate, and participate in the decision-making process.

“We must ensure that the voices of the marginalised are amplified, not silenced, as it is through this space that we can build trust, unity, and a shared vision for a better future,” he said.

The President assured that the government would continue to strengthen labour protections, improve job security, and ensure fair treatment for all workers, in line with international best practices. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Niger has urged the state government to increase its members’ salaries due to the hazardous nature of their jobs.

The state Chairman of the union,  Usman Abubakar-Dabban, made the request at a reception organised for the workers to mark the International Workers Day in Minna on Thursday.

He said that since health workers were game-changers, there was the need to increase their wages.

According to Abubakar-Dabban, an increase of 150 per cent will justify the critical role health workers play in the system.

He lauded the governor and the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, for implementing the new minimum wage of N80,000, which was above what was recommended by the Federal Government.

He hailed the deputy governor for initiating the building of the union’s hall when he was the chairman of the union, which would be inaugurated soon.

He urged the union members to adhere to the ethics of the profession to ensure they enjoy the welfare they crave for from the state government.

Earlier in his remarks, Aminu Yusuf, Special Adviser to Niger governor on Labour Matters, lauded the workers for the reception.

Yusuf said workers day was a day for labour leaders to take stock of their achievements, consolidate on them and identify new challenges, so that they could open a new chapter towards addressing them.(NAN)

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun says he has approved N4 billion bond for the payment of retirees under the contributory pension scheme in the state.

Adeleke made this known in his speech at the Workers’ Day celebration at Fakunle High School, Osogbo, on Thursday.

He explained that the bond was for retirees in the state and local governments.

“I have just approved, through the Office of the Head of Service, the payment of bond for retirees under the contributory pension scheme worth over N4 billion.

“Civil service parastatal, secondary schools, tertiary institutions, Uniosun Teaching Hospital retirees will get N2,175,280,322.54 while N2,098,466,528.87 will be given to local governments and primary schools retirees,” he said.

Adeleke said he was in tune with the high cost of living in the country, adding that he was aware of the economic situation.

The governor expressed commitment to the welfare of workers and residents of the state.

“As a sub national government, we have been collaborating with the Federal Government to ease the burden of economic hardship.

“As a matter of policy, we have gone out of our ways to ensure the success of federal government’s efforts.

“We back the centre to reform the national economy and ease the burden on our people.

“At the state level, our government is repositioning the state economy to service the people. We are managing state resources in various ways that no sector is left behind.

“While we are not borrowing to fund governance, we have reduced the inherited state debt by over 40 per cent. The Debt Management Office confirmed this much in its recent reports,” he said.

Adeleke said that his administration was rebuilding the state economy to benefit the people, adding that “through the government’s local content policies, our professionals, suppliers and artisans are fully engaged, Osun money is servicing Osun people.”

Mr Christopher Arapasopo, Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun Chapter, appreciated the governor for his rancour-free and workers-friendly administration.

He commended the governor for paying salary arrears owed by past administration, approving and paying promotion areas of workers, paying N75,000 as new minimum wage, among others.

Arapasopo appealed for the provision of housing and vehicle refurbishing loan to workers, training and retraining of workers, and recruitment of more people into the civil service.

He said the 2025 Workers Day theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship” was chosen as both a call to action and a rallying point for advocacy and change.

“This theme encapsulates the urgent need for workers to reclaim their rights, voices, and civic engagement in times of adversity,” he noted. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
