Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, has stated the reason for mainstreaming gender inclusion in industrial and trade policy.

Oduwole made this known on Thursday in Lagos at The Covenant Nation Platform Africa Women in Leadership and Women in Business Conference.

The minister noted that women, when equipped with the tools, networks and opportunities, do not just participate; they lead, grow, and multiply value.

She added that women in leadership positions are more likely to prioritise collaboration, invest in social infrastructure, and lead with empathy and inclusion.

Oduwole noted that companies with more women in leadership outperform their peers and countries with more inclusive policies grow faster and more equitably.

“Leadership is not a gendered gift, but the absence of women in leadership is a loss, not just for women, but for society.

“That is why I have mainstreamed gender inclusion in industrial and trade policy.

“Whether we are designing Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) support funds, shaping trade facilitation strategies, or negotiating under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), we must ask: where are the women? This is because that is smart economics.

“The business of the future is female and Africa’s future will be driven by women in business,” she said.

Oduwole stated that while women account for nearly 60 per cent of Africa’s self-employed population, they face systemic barriers in accessing finance, markets and formal structures.

According to her, as Africa rethinks, the continent must begin to reimagine an economy that truly works for women.

She said the continent must be guided by a system where startup capital does not require collateral women are statistically less likely to own, and where policies are not gender-blind but gender-intentional.

“It must be supported by a system where leadership is not something women have to prove they are worthy of, but something we collectively cultivate, mentor and support at every level,” she said.

Oduwole said that her leadership journey had been shaped by a deep commitment to driving transformative change and impact within Nigeria’s economic growth.

She noted that her strong foundation in financial systems and business strategy provided a clear lens into how capital moved and how economic structures shaped national development.

“Together, these experiences have shaped my approach to leadership; rooted in evidence, equity, and a belief in Africa’s capacity to compete and thrive globally.

“I hope my leadership legacy reflects the power of systemic change, and I want to be remembered for caring enough to sacrifice many things to build a more resilient, equitable and sustainable business environment in Nigeria and Africa,” she said.

Oduwole also advised women to henceforth mentor with intention, collaborate across borders and lead with purpose. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday thanked Nigerian workers for their patriotism, perseverance and promised to cushion economic hardship.

Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammed  Dingyadi, said this at the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja.

The President described workers as the “backbone of our society, whose dedication and resilience drive the engine of the Nigerian economy and uphold the values of our dear nation.”

He said the  government recognised the contributions of the organised labour in fostering dialogue, promoting workers’ rights, and ensuring that their voices are always heard, loud and clear.

Tinubu said the theme for this year’s May Day celebrations,”Reclaiming the civic space in the midst of economic hardship” demanded a collective attention.

He added that the theme served as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute most productively to the growth and prosperity of the nation.

“As your president, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating conducive climate for the common good of all of us.

“Economic hardship is a global phenomenon, cut across all regions, testing the resolve of world leaders, but has not broken our spirit,” he said.

The President said the government was well aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship for Nigerians occasioned by struggles and challenges of workers and indeed many Nigerians.

“These ranges from a rising cost of living, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, loss of livelihood, and pressure to provide necessities for your families, amongst others.

“These challenges are real, critical, and demand definite solutions, which I, as your president, am poised to address,” he said.

The President assured his administration’s commitment to implementing deliberate policies aimed at promoting job creation, decent jobs, poverty alleviation, economic growth and stability.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable.

Speaking on the theme of the day, Tinubu underscored the need for reclaiming the civic space, “where ideas are exchanged, voices are heard, and change is born”.

“A vibrant civic space is the cornerstone of democracy, and it is essential for holding leaders’ accountable, fostering innovation, and ensuring every Nigerian has a seat at the table.

“Therefore, to reclaim this space, we must prioritise transparency, inclusivity, equity, and dialogue.

“We must protect the rights of workers to organise, advocate, and participate in the decision-making process.

“We must ensure that the voices of the marginalised are amplified, not silenced, as it is through this space that we can build trust, unity, and a shared vision for a better future,” he said.

The President assured that the government would continue to strengthen labour protections, improve job security, and ensure fair treatment for all workers, in line with international best practices. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Niger has urged the state government to increase its members’ salaries due to the hazardous nature of their jobs.

The state Chairman of the union,  Usman Abubakar-Dabban, made the request at a reception organised for the workers to mark the International Workers Day in Minna on Thursday.

He said that since health workers were game-changers, there was the need to increase their wages.

According to Abubakar-Dabban, an increase of 150 per cent will justify the critical role health workers play in the system.

He lauded the governor and the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, for implementing the new minimum wage of N80,000, which was above what was recommended by the Federal Government.

He hailed the deputy governor for initiating the building of the union’s hall when he was the chairman of the union, which would be inaugurated soon.

He urged the union members to adhere to the ethics of the profession to ensure they enjoy the welfare they crave for from the state government.

Earlier in his remarks, Aminu Yusuf, Special Adviser to Niger governor on Labour Matters, lauded the workers for the reception.

Yusuf said workers day was a day for labour leaders to take stock of their achievements, consolidate on them and identify new challenges, so that they could open a new chapter towards addressing them.(NAN)

Pensioners urge Kaduna govt to defray N20bn pension liabilities

Pensioners urge Kaduna govt to defray N20bn pension liabilities

The National Union of Pensioners (NUP), has urged Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State, to pay the N20 billion outstanding pension liabilities owed its members

The State Secretary of the union, Alhassan Balarabe-Musa, said this on Thursday in Kaduna while commenting to the 2025 International Workers’ Day.

He said the Sani administration inherited over N30 billion pension liabilities at its inauguration on May 29,2023.

“The governor has paid over N3.6 billion in 2023. In all, he has paid over N10.4 billion to date.

“We are grateful that he has settled part of the inherited pension liabilities but more efforts should be made in this direction,” he said.

Balarabe-Musa, however, lamented those under the contributory pension scheme were yet to receive payment from 2017 to date.

The scribe said that workers disengaged in 2017, especially those in the service of the local government councils were yet to be paid as their records have been declared missing.

He, therefore, urged the governor to do the needful for this category of pitiable pensioners to get their entitlements, adding that, “this will greatly help in alleviating their sufferings as most of them and their dependents are now living from hand to mouth.”

Alhassan Balarabe-Musa, NUP Secretary, Kaduna State

Balarabe-Musa also advocated for the implementation of the N32,000 pension increase approved by the Federal Government.

“So, if the increase is implemented, pensioners in the state will receive a minimum of N62,000 monthly pension.

“I want the governor to be the second one to implement it as only Yobe is the only state that has so far done so across Nigeria.

“He should emulate his predecessor who was the first governor to implement the N30,000 minimum pension in February 2020.”

The NUP scribe further urged the governor to provide a bus and a plot of land for it to build a befitting State Secretariat

He decried, ” The union had 15 houses at the Marafa Estate in Kaduna city, which were sold at the tale end of the Nasir El-Rufai administration.

“The exercise violated all extant due process regulations as the houses were sold at a paltry sum of N200million, with even no records to where the money went.

“We, therefore, want the governor to probe these sales, revoke it and retrieve these houses for NUP,” he said, adding that the state government provided vehicles to all the trade unions except the NUP. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Lagos State Government has announced that its industrial leather hub at Matori in Mushin will be inaugurated in the second quarter of 2025.

Mr Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, the state Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, gave the assurance on Wednesday at the 2025 Lagos State Ministerial Press Briefing in Ikeja.
The briefing was in commemoration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year of second term in office.
The commissioner re-affirmed the government’s commitment to building infrastructure in order to create wealth and jobs for residents of the state.
“The Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, in staying true to its mandate, is tackling challenges militating against the growth and development of nano, micro, small and medium scale businesses.
“The leather hub at Matori was established to enhance the development of artisans and entrepreneurs in the leather value chain in the state.
“The industrial leather hub at Matori, Mushin, is to create employment, develop capacity of artisans and provide necessary equipment and infrastructure for MSMEs,” he said.
He said the ministry was focused on building sustainable programmes and projects geared toward improving the financial status of artisans and others regardless of age, tribe or social status.
“As a ministry, we are committed to creating sustainable employment opportunities through skills acquisition for youths, as well as nurture, innovate and support entrepreneurs to create jobs.
“As an additional effort to create employment, the ministry, in collaboration with Human Capital Partners, onboarded 2383 interns from the Graduate Internship Placement Programme (GIPP).
“We have onboarded 2383 graduates in various internship placements. Graduates were empowered with employability skills ranging from creative thinking, problem-solving and decision making.
“Other skills acquired are written and oral communication, team work, interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence,” he said.
The official said that during the three-week intensive training, a stipend of N30,000 was paid to each trainee for transport and purchase of data for both virtual and physical sessions.
He added that at the end of the training, participants proceeded to have three-month internship with the private sector to enhance their chances of gainful employment.
On entrepreneurship training for People with Disability (PwD), the commissioner reaffirmed that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration was deliberate about inclusivity.
“The ministry organised a five-week entrepreneurial skill training for PwDs.
“The programme was aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as entrepreneurs.
“Upon completion, each participant received a start-up pack to kick-start their businesses.
“The programme goes to show that the government is dedicated to fostering self-reliance and economic independence among individuals with disability.”
He said that the Sanwo-Olu-led administration understood the importance of the informal sector.
“It is pertinent to note that the informal sector of the economy which is dominated by tradesmen and artisans cannot be ignored, given their numerical strength and significant contributions to the economy.
“They were encouraged to come together to form themselves into associations and register with the government.
“The ministry therefore undertook the registration of 148 tradesmen and artisans’ associations in the state.
“The ministry also produced and issued 9,444 identity cards to members of
registered tradesmen and artisans’ association to serve as a means of identification.”

Without SEC’s registration, investment scheme not legitimate – D-G

The Securities and Exchange Commission has warned citizens against companies that claim their registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) empowers them to operate investment schemes.

The Director-General of SEC, Dr Emomotimi Agama, said this on Wednesday at a campaign against ponzi schemes in Garki Market, Abuja.

Agama regretted that some Nigerian and foreign companies specialised in defrauding citizens through ponzi schemes.

He said the government would no longer sit back and watch citizens being defrauded of their hard earned monies.

Agama said it was important that Nigerians understood the dangers of putting their money into ventures that were not registered or regulated by the SEC.

“It is disheartening that some Nigerians and foreign accompanies have specialised in duping Nigerians and government will not sit and watch them.

“This is why SEC is coming out to the people to educate them that if it is too good to be true, then watch out.

“We have seen many ponzi schemes in the past, and the Investments and Securities Act have been signed into law by the President and the law recommends N20 million fine and 10 years imprisonment for offenders of ponzi scheme.

“So, that has empowered us to be in a better position to flush out all these fraudulent investment schemes that are damaging our economy.

“CAC registration and EFCC certificate is not enough to show that the company is registered with SEC and these are red flags,” he said.

Agama said the sensitisation was to inform the people and assist them to confirm legitimate investment schemes.

He said that training programmes being organised by the fraudulent schemes to lure people were also illegal.

“As we are doing this, we have helped to educate them against being duped. CAC registration and EFCC certificate is not enough to show that the company is registered with SEC and these are red flags.

“Training programmes being organised by these people to lure people into their schemes are also illegal. Verify before you invest in any scheme, and that is our message to Nigerians.”

The Assistant Director, Enforcement Department, SEC, Tope Onwionoko, said the management of the commission was passionate about financial literacy, especially with respect to ponzi schemes that had become a scourge in the society.

“We want everybody to know about it; we want the message to go round the entire country.

“And as a start off point, we decided that it is a good thing to come to the market, because we know the place the people who trade in the market hold in the economy,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that SEC said the commission would take the campaign against ponzi schemes to churches, mosques, hospitals, barracks, among others. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
