Dr Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has said that the President Bola Tinubu administration has performed well as he marks his 100 days in office.

Hamzat made the remarks during a special prayer to commemorate 100 days in office of President Bola Tinubu, held on Thursday at the Lagos Central Mosque, Lagos Island.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tinubu was inaugurated as the 16th President of Nigeria on May 29.

According to him, the past 100 days of this government have been very encouraging as different achievements and various initiatives are put in place by the Federal Government.

Speaking on the achievements of the Federal Government so far, the deputy governor stated that the administration had performed well.

“The first 100 days had been about economic reforms and enactment of laws than infrastructures.

“We can see judiciary reform, tax reform, education upgrade, which are part of the many things this administration has done,” he said.

Justifying the petrol subsidy removal, Hamzat said 93 per cent of the nation’s revenue was used for debt payment on fuel subsidy and the country was almost bankrupt.

“The fuel subsidy consumed more money than the Ministry of Works and Education put together and government is saying it is not sustainable as a nation,” he said.

Similarly, the deputy governor said that Nigerians have cause to give thanks to God for sustaining the country as there are many countries going through worse challenges.

Hamzat added that Nigerians have reasons to thank God for the peaceful moments the country had enjoyed in spite of the challenges witnessed.

According to him, every nation has challenges but it is the responsibility of the government to face those challenges and tackle them.

He cited examples of Sweden, Libya, Iraq and some other countries that are currently undergoing different challenges.

On Lagos State Government achievements since assumption of office for the second tenure, the deputy governor noted that a lot of initiatives had been put in place, which include the commencement of Blue Line Rail for commercial purposes.

“Lagos State Government is the only sub-sovereign that is funding rail from its balance sheet, no other sub-sovereign has done it anywhere in the world and this took a lot of financial engineering for us to build,” he said.

He disclosed that the red line would soon commence service.

Hamzat noted that the project is massive and would convey passengers from Agege through Ejigbo and Yaba within ten-minute interval.

Earlier, the Baba Adinni of Lagos, Sheikh Abdul Abou, who was represented by the Bashorun of Lagos, Alhaji Sikiru Alabi-Macfoy said the country had witnessed a lot of transformation and policy reviews in the last 100 days of the Tinubu administration.

Abou was optimistic that the transformation would yield positive results for citizens and the country in due course.

He charged Nigerians to continue to pray for the president to come up with policies and reforms that would be in the best interest of Nigerians.

The sheik also commended the Gov. Sanwo-Olu Babajide administration for the successes recorded so far in the state in the last 100 days.

According bto him, the governor has been able to put measures in place to alleviate the pains experienced due to fuel subsidy removal by sharing palliatives to the most vulnerable in the state.

“Also, the recent commencement of the commercial Blue Rail Line will reduce traffic in the state,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

She stated that her experience in the international space and interaction with representatives of other African countries at the event, showed that Nigeria has made significant strides in combating gender-based violence.

Ajibodu however noted that there was still room for improvement; hence, the need to fortify collaboration between governmental bodies, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and communities.

He described the inequality as a contributing factor to the high rate of poverty in the society.

“Our tax system need a lot of work to ensure that this taxes are collected as they should and also ensure that the people saddled with the responsibility of pushing this taxes do their job.

“We have seen through research conducted that vulnerable people down the ladder in terms of economic status are the ones that pay more taxes than people up there having more economic opportunities due to policies and systems put in place by our government.

“The policies give sometimes tax relieve on some of these corporations and organisations that are suppose to pay heavy tax and allow the vulnerable market women and farmers in the villages pay tax on everything that they need or access to earn a living.

“Government should look at their policies again and ensure that those policies are balance that is ensuring fair taxation.

“Those who are suppose to pay taxes should pay those taxes and those who are suppose to pay more pay more while those that are suppose to pay less pay less,” he said.

He said the vision of Oxfam is for a Nigeria without inequality and poverty, and where every voice counts.

According to him, Oxfam Nigeria mission is to strengthen and empower civil society to help shape a Nigeria without inequality and poverty.

“The overall objective of FAIR4ALL is to see how we reduce inequality as one of the root causes of poverty.

“Base on the research we conducted we realised that the reason for this much poverty is inequality which has really be endemic. We need to end that menace that is why this programme was introduced, ” he said.

According to him, through the programme supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oxfam since inception of the programme three years ago has been able to work across policy area in terms of fostering policy implementation within the tax industry.

“Also to train government around open contracting and also enabled communities better understand the dynamics around budget and planning.

Some electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have continued to count their losses following the power outage recorded in the territory for two days.

The consumers told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews on Wednesday in Abuja that blackout had adversely affected their socio-economic life.

NAN reports that there has been blackout in most parts of the FCT, following the 2-day warning strike by the NLC.

They, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government to urgently resolve  the problem that necessitated the two-day strike.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) attributed the power outage being experienced in its franchise areas to the NLC warning strike.

The management of AEDC made this known in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

”We are aware of the general power outage being experienced across our franchise, this is due to enforcement of the two-day warning strike embarked upon by the labour union.

”We apologise for any inconvenience you may be experiencing as a result of this, as we continue our engagement with key stakeholders toward minimising the impact of the strike on our customers,” it said.

AEDC however urged the customers to take necessary precautions to manage the power outage effectively.

The electricity consumers residing in Lugbe, Kuje, Garki Area10, Central Area and Nyanya told NAN in Abuja on Wednesday told NAN that the blackout had affected their sources of income.

Mrs Esther Ojo, a Hair Stylist resident in Garki Area 10, said that since the strike started on Tuesday, she has found it difficult to carry out her business.

Ojo said that she rely on electricity to run her business, adding that a lot of customers reurned disappointed because of no power.

“”A lot of customers turned back because I need electricity to power my  hair driers, if I wash a customer’s hair, I cannot afford to put fuel in my generator to dry it because of the high cost of fuel.

‘’I know the strike is for our own good but it is also affecting our businesses, so I am appealing to government to quickly look into the demand of  NLC,” he said.

Mr Monday Izekor, a Fashion Designer residing in Lugbe, said that the blackout has made him not work effectively for two days so he could not meet customers demand.

Izekor said that most of his sewing machines use electricity, using the manual one slows him down.

“”I have not been meeting my customers demand because most of my sewing machines use electricity and my appeal is that government and NLC should settle their difference for the good of Nigerians.”

On her part, Mrs Comfort Maduka, Ice Block seller resident in Kuje, told NAN that the strike has not been easy as she cannot buy diesel to power her generator.

“Diesel is expensive, I cannot buy it and now no light but I know NLC is fighting for us, government should intervene as cost of living is so high,” she lamented.

Mr Johnbull Oche, a resident of Nyanya who runs a laundry service, said that the past two days had been terrible for him.

According to him, he has not been able to meet up with customers demand because of the power outage.

”I am appealing to government to settle with NLC so that the light can be restored,” he urged. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government has expressed its commitment to accelerate the implementation of the African Development  Bank’s (AfDB) Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) project in the country.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubarka Kyari, said this at the SAPZ Phase II Inception Workshop on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The President Bola Tinubu’s administration  is determined to give unprecedented attention to agriculture and food security.

“We are determined to fast track the Phase I and Phase II of this project to unlock the opportunities for food security, job security and increase the contribution of the sector to the GDP.

“SAPZ has come to stay. All hands must therefore be on deck to ensure a successful implementation  of the programme in Nigeria,” Kyari said.

According to the minister, the project is designed to diversify the country’s economy by changing agriculture to becoming a profitable economic venture.

He said it would provide a win-win scenario for investors, government and citizens, adding that it was open for more collaboration from investors.

The minister then pledged the commitment of the government to work with the states and private sector to mobilise resources for the implementation of the project.

Earlier, the Director-General, Nigeria Country Department of AfDB, Lamin Barrow, said the SAPZ sought to promote the development of value chain for strategic commodities in Nigeria and across Africa.

“ They will provide world class infrastructure to support food agribusinesses to locate close to zones of production, develop competitive value chains supported by logistic systems that will drive food processing and value addition.

“The SAPZs will help create massive wealth and jobs in rural areas and turn rural areas away from being zones of economic misery to zones of economic prosperity,” he said

According to Lamin, AfDB is developing SAPZs in 11 African countries. One each in Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Madagascar, Senegal, and Togo, and four in Ethiopia.

He said that the SAPZ programme in Nigeria was the largest, both in scale and scope as phase 1 is currently being implemented over five years in seven states.

He said the states included Cross River, Imo Kaduna , Kano, Kwara, Ogun and Oyo, adding that the states were chosen based on readiness and to achieve a balance across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

According to Lamin,  there has been a growing interest and enthusiasm from both the Government and private sector players in the Phase II of the SAPZ Programme.

“ So far, the Bank has received Expression of Interest (EOI) from no fewer than 23 States across the six geo-political zones in the country. “The States are: Lagos, Anambra, Benue, Ekiti, Delta, Gombe, Ondo, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Bayelsa, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Enugu, Osun, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Borno.

Amnesty Programme considers expanding cooperative scheme to accommodate other groups

Amnesty Programme considers expanding cooperative scheme to accommodate other groups

The Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), said on Wednesday that its micro-finance project, PAP Cooperative Society Limited (PAPCOSOL), would be expanded to accommodate women groups already engaged in similar practices in running mini businesses successfully.

The Interim Administrator of PAP, Maj.-Gen. Barry Ndiomu (rtd), said this in Abuja when he received in his office, the leadership and members of the Niger Delta Women for Sustainable Development (NDWSD), a coalition of community women groups.

The cooperative society scheme was primarily designed for ex-agitators, but Ndiomu said that they were planning to incorporate into the cooperative scheme women community credit thrift schemes that thrive in the Niger Delta.

Ndiomu noted the critical role women could play in changing the socio- economic narratives of the region, if provided with the right tools and encouragement.

“We will look at the thrift or osusu scheme as you have highlighted, to see how it can be incorporated into the PAP cooperative programmes through a collaborative effort, to improve the livelihoods of the people.

“I am very happy with some of the things you mentioned, especially the idea of giving attention to women in the activities of the PAP which has always been part of our priority in contract awards.

“Our priority extends to scholarship awards for undergraduates and post graduate female students, vocational and empowerment programmes,” he said.

Ndiomu noted that there were females on the PAP pilot programme, and that with time, the cooperative scheme would be the game changer to address issues of empowerment for the people of the region.

The Interim Administrator also expressed gratitude to the women for the visit and for the words of encouragement to spur him on.

Earlier in her address, Helen Bob, who led the group, thanked Ndiomu for granting them audience.

She noted the role of women in nation building and called on relevant agencies to attach more importance in developing the capacity of women.

She also called for the provision of micro-finance loans for rural Niger Delta women through their community credit thrift cooperative society popularly known as osusu or okpu.

“This is an age long self-financing scheme among rural Niger Delta women and therefore, identifying with it will enhance financial guarantee for the rural Niger Delta woman.

“Our group is capable of organising periodic decentralised training for the women in their various communities to fully utilise the funds for their thrift cooperative societies to grow their micro-economies through petty commodity trading,” she said.

She advocated for the provision of facilities “for improved preservation techniques of seafood and farm produce, fishing and farming equipment” to reduce the stress in carrying out those activities.

“General Ndiomu is doing a good job here and he needs to be encouraged.

“It is high time people of the Niger Delta stopped being critical of their sons and daughters in positions of trust.

The ‘pull him down’ syndrome must stop,” she added. The highlight of the visit was the investiture of the Interim Administrator as the first patron of the Niger Delta Women forSustainable Development. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

PEPC: Why we are out in support of Tinubu – Asari Dokubo

PEPC: Why we are out in support of Tinubu – Asari Dokubo

A Niger Delta Leader, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, on Wednesday, said his group came out to show solidarity with President Bola Tinubu because the petitions against him were frivolous and lacked substance.

Dokubo spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) outside the premises of the Appeal Court Headquarters, Abuja, venue of the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC).

The ex-militant, who gathered with his group, the Ijaw Youths for BAT in collaboration with National APC Supporters Centre and Northern Youths Network for Asiwaju, along the Shehu Shagari Way directly opposite the Head of Service Building, said he was hopeful that the case would be decided in their favour.

“We are here to show our presence in the court. We know that the case will be decided in our favour.

“The case is frivolous; they don’t have any substance in their case.

“But if you don’t come, they will come here and start to misbehave. And that is why we came.

“You have seen the overwhelming majority (pointing to members of his group); you can’t find them anywhere,” he said.

According to him, President Tinubu has been with me in my most trying period, and this is the time for me to pay back.

When asked what he would do if the outcome of the judgment did not favour his candidate, Dokubo simply said: “We know our case and we know that it will go in our favour.”

He said whichever way the pendulum of the judgment swings, “All Nigerians should come together and work for the good of the country.”

NAN reports that some of the placards carried by members of the groups had inscriptions like: “On Tinubu’s Mandate, We the Citizens Stand”, “Thank You President Tinubu for Restoring the Niger Delta Ministry”, and “President Tinubu Loves the Niger Delta”.

Inscription on another placard reads “The Office of the Citizens is Supreme, the Citizens Have Spoken, On Tinubu’s Mandate, We the Citizens Stand”, among others.

NAN reports that the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) are challenging the election victory of Tinubu.

The presidential poll was conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Feb. 25. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

I’ll industralise Imo if I become governor, says LP candidate Achonu

I’ll industralise Imo if I become governor, says LP candidate Achonu

143 total views today

By Emmanuel Afonne

Sen. Athan Achonu, candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the Nov. 11 Governorship Election in Imo, has pledged to industrialise the state if he is elected governor of the state.

Achonu made the pledge when he briefed newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said that arrangements have been concluded with some power generating companies to generate power for the state to boost his government’s industrialisation plan should he eventually emerge governor.

“We have mapped out six industrial layouts, two per each geopolitical zone, with focus on job creation through industrialisation, and that is why I am focusing on power generation,” Achonu said.

He said that he was encouraged by the bill signed into law by the federal government which now permits states to produce and generate their own source of power, noting that states now have every reason to pursue their industrialisation goal.

“I have concluded plans with Afreximbank and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support industries.

“I have a licence to operate a refinery; I will activate it or encourage people to take it over in order not to distract me while in office.

“Orlu is a Pharmaceutical zone, I got banks to do a pharmaceutical park in Okigwe so that investors can come; I told the owner of Orange Drugs about it a long time ago.

“I am bringing all these ideas into play to create job opportunities,” Achonu said.

According to him, security of lives and properties will be top in his agenda, while Local Government Areas (LGAs) will be given autonomy to manage their funds and resources.

Achonu noted that insecurity heightened in Imo since governors allegedly hijacked the local government (LG) system.

“I have been championing LG autonomy since Obasanjo left, till today. We will organise LG elections in six months if we are elected into office; I will lead by example.

“I have been consistent on LG autonomy in so many interviews that I have granted, and I believe that criminality came in since the LG system was hijacked by governors, who allegedly pocketed their funds.

“If you are a councilor elected by the people, there is no way a criminal will enter your territory that you will not notice or be informed.

“That is why I am advocating the establishment of vigilante groups for local governments.

“So, the first bill I will send to the House of Assembly is for every LGA to have a vigilante group which we will supervise through oversight functions by the House.

“The vigilante groups will work with the Police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and so on, in securing lives and properties,” he said.

Achonu said that God had kept him alive to be the next governor of Imo in the forthcoming election, saying that he would never be a stooge or placeholder for any politician.

He noted that another major challenge his administration would face if elected as governor would be the huge debt profile of the state, in addition to salary and pension arrears of many workers and retirees in the state.

Achonu, however, assured that he would ensure a realistic policy that would fashion out ways of offsetting the backlog of salaries and pensions of workers and pensioners to give them a new life. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
