Dr Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, said on Wednesday that 23,000 people have been reported missing in less than a decade due to the insurgency in some parts of the country.

Edu said this in Abuja at a stakeholders engagement with the theme “Where are you now”, to mark the International Day of the Disappeared.

She said that the figure represented half the number of missing people in the whole of Africa.

Edu said that the report of the missing people released by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) was as a result of the insurgency in some parts of the country.

“Today, over 23,000 persons are still missing.

“However, it is likely that this is just a tip of the iceberg as a more efficient mechanism is needed to improve the reporting and forensically trace cases of missing persons,” She said.

The minister said the issue of missing people had become one of the most critical and long-lasting humanitarian consequences of armed conflicts, and as such called for sober reflections.

Edu said that the present administration was committed to curbing the issue, hence the need to facilitate and strengthen the legal frameworks that would substantially address the incidences of disappearance.

Mr Yann Bonzon, Head of Delegation, ICRC, said that more than 23,000 people, registered by the Family Links Network in Nigeria, never returned home, and remained missing until date.

Bonzon said that the number did not convey the true extent of the issue.

“The actual number of missing persons is likely to be much higher, with Nigeria having more missing people than any other country on the continent.

“Until a national mechanism is created, immediate steps must be taken by the Nigerian government to prevent disappearances, to prevent the disruption of family links and maintaining links between separated family members.

“It will also help to address proper management of the dead,” he said.

Bonzon said that ICRC would continue to work closely with the government and relevant stakeholders to prevent disappearances to encourage and promote the adoption of international best practices.

He said that the ICRC would also support the Nigerian authorities to build sustainable capacities and resources to establish a national mechanism for the missing and their families.

“Let us collectively remind ourselves that while people might be gone, they will never be forgotten, and their families will never stop searching for them,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group walked from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to the National Human Rights Commission, to create awareness. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

A socio-economic pressure group, Arewa Economic Forum, has urged President Bola Tinubu, to be fair and equitable in the appointment of competent Nigerians into government positions.

The Chairman of the Forum, Ibrahim Dandakata, who said this in a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja, specifically cited appointments into the finance ministry as well as Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Dandakata said that the appointments of Mr Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance, Folashodun Shonubi, Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), occupied by people from a particular section of the country, could send wrong signals.

He also cited the appointment of Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, among others, who are also from the same zone in the country as Edun and Shonubi, as capable of also sending wrong signals.

Dandakata urged Tinubu to look for competent Nigerians across the length and breadth of the country for the purposes of fairness and inclusiveness.

“As you may be aware, finance and ICT are crucial to the economic eldorado that the president envisions for Nigeria.

“The Federal Ministry of Finance manages the finances of the federation, including controlling and monitoring federal revenues and expenditures

“The Federal Ministry of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy develop a knowledge-based economy and facilitate the development of the ICT industry towards increasing its contribution to GDP.

“The two ministries play greater roles in facilitating businesses, e-commerce, job creation, empowerment and increased efficiency and productivity, which are vital for economic growth and prosperity,” he said.

According to him, the importance of finance and ICT sectors are such that we must be circumspect in the kind of decisions we make in those sectors.

He, however, commended the president for retaining performing chief executives of some key government agencies.

“As a patriotic, refined statesman who won a credible national mandate in February, Tinubu has a duty to not only be fair to all parts of the country but also to be seen to be fair to all parts.

“Meanwhile, we must commend the president for retaining some performing chief executive officers of leading agencies in economic and technology sector like Bello Hassan of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and Kashifu Inuwa of National Information Technology Development Agency.

“We believe that more competent, qualified and experienced technocrats from the North can also be appointed to head crucial sectors of the economy,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

A foundation known as Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation (SEOF) has unveiled  plans to empower secondary school students, underprivileged women and farmers with resources  to improve their skills, livelihoods and communities.

The Chairman of the foundation, Mr Emeka Okwuosa, made this known on Tuesday via a report from the inaugural SEOF Gala Night in Lagos State.

Okwuosa said that generosity and compassion inspired him to establish SEOF.

Okwuosa, also a business mogul and philanthropist, said that the foundation had been impacting lives and communities in more than 14 states of Nigeria.

He listed the states as Anambra, Borno, Adamawa, Kaduna, Abuja, Kogi, Oyo, Ekiti, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Imo and Abia.

Okwuosa said that sustainable socio-economic empowerment should be centered on providing market-facing skills and opportunities, particularly to the youth, who constitute the majority of the Nigerian and African population.

The chairman said that in 2024, the foundation would  launch a national engineering competition, a women enterprise programme and an agro-cluster cooperative programme.

He said that the engineering competition would aim to identify outstanding engineering students  working on innovative prototypes with real-world applications.

According to him, the competition is designed to encourage engineers and aspiring engineers to work toward collectively tackling Nigeria’s  challenges.

He said that the competition could be expanded across Africa  in the future.

“The women enterprise programme aims to support women entrepreneurs in scaling up their businesses through skill-building workshops, mentoring, networking opportunities and access to funding and markets.

“The agro-cluster cooperative programme aims to provide jobs and enhance food security − not only locally, but also across the country − by providing farmers access to inputs and guaranteed off-take as a catalyst for more robust farming.

“Witnessing fellow Nigerians endure hardships without attempting to alleviate their suffering is something I find impossible.

“Each day, we are reminded of the challenges that our nation faces – from the strain on our economy and infrastructure to unsettling food insecurity.

“Our goal is to teach beneficiaries how to fish so that they can feed themselves and their communities for a lifetime,” he said.

Okwuosa listed  achievements of the foundation to include facilitation of $217,939 open-heart surgeries for 34 patients at the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital in 2022.

According to him, the others are provision of primary healthcare services to over 566 beneficiaries, building of a garri processing factory and  donation of motorcycles to assist small-business owners.

He called for partnerships with well-meaning individuals and organisations to  effect positive changes in people and communities.

“Together, I am confident we can unlock growth and opportunities that far surpass what we could achieve individually,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Job racketeering probe: Reps dismiss extortion claim, summon NUC, VCs

Job racketeering probe: Reps dismiss extortion claim, summon NUC, VCs

By Femi Ogunshola

The Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee investigating job racketeering in MDAs, Rep. Yusuf Gagdi, has dismissed allegation of extortion of some MDAs by the committee, describing it as baseless.

Reacting to allegation, the committee summoned all Vice Chancellors of federal universities to appear before it on Sept. 1, to give documentary evidences on the reported alleged extortion by a member of the committee.

Gagdi issued the notice in Abuja on Tuesday during the resumed investigative hearing on job racketeering affecting over 400 MDAs.

He said the author of the online report, titled: ‘Nigerian lawmakers probing job racketeering are extorting money from agencies’, was unfair to tag all the 37-members of the committee as ‘corrupt’.

He said the committee would not be deterred by any form of sponsored blackmail from carrying out its statutory functions.

The chairman said though he is the leader of the committee, he was unaware of any member collecting money from MDAs.

Gagdi explained that if the author and the vice chancellors have any information on any particular member, such report should be channeled towards the member rather than blackmailing all members of the committee.

He said it would be difficult for such report to blackmail the committee before Nigerians, adding that they have seen how the committee is attacking the agencies.

He said the author of the story who failed to use the word alleged, however went ahead to indict the 37-member committee, adding that such will not happen even in a military regime.

“Regarding to what we are hearing and what we are seeing is first to tell Nigerians that this Committee is not going to be deterred in discharging its responsibility.

“Nigerians have hope in this committee from the way we are conducting the business of this committee, everybody is seeing what we are doing.

“We will not compromise by hiding and aiding irregularities going on in the public service.

“No amount of statement accusing this Committee will deter us from doing our job.

“You may have your problem with a member of this committee, but don’t blackmail the entire committee members.

“I’m saying this because I am not being accused of doing anything, but if you have issues that you want to make public about a member of this committee, sort it out with him.

“Please, don’t put anything at the faces of members of this committee.

“We are determined to do justice to Nigerians in the course of this investigation.

“My only appeal to the members of the fourth estate of the realm, the press, is that let us be credible journalists. If you have anything to say about us, be categorical.

“Don’t accuse my members blindly. Tell us who is accusing who, instead of tagging this committee as a corrupt committee. It is unacceptable to us, we are not and we will never be,” he declared.

According to him, Nigerians have high hope in the committee, adding that this will be the first in the history of the National Assembly that the country will see mind blowing recommendations.

He said the recommendation would be aimed and targeted at cleaning up public service, reassuring that the committee will not be deterred.

“But don’t bring an indicting headline in the name of selling your newspaper or agency. Please I’m saying this – we will move forward, and we will do the needful, we are not going to surrender,” Gagdi said.

He therefore directed the Clerk of the Ad-hoc Committee to write the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure that all the VCs appear before the committee on Friday to clarify the allegation. (NAN)

NNPP BoT slams 6 months suspension on Kwankwaso, others

NNPP BoT slams 6 months suspension on Kwankwaso, others

By Adeyemi Adeleye

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended its candidate in the Feb. 25 presidential election, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for alleged anti party activities.

The BoT also suspended the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

It also appointed new national officers headed by Dr Agbo Major as acting National Chairman and Mr Ogini Olaposi as acting National Secretary with 18 others.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspension is for six months.

NAN reports that the suspensions were put to a voice vote by members of the party at its special general assembly, held at the Rockview Hotels in Apapa.

NAN recalls that the NWC of the party on Thursday, Aug. 24, announced the suspension of the founder of the party, Dr Boniface Aniebonam and the National Publicity Secretary, Major.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the meeting in Lagos on Tuesday, Secretary of the BoT, Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, accused Kwankwaso of hobnobbing with President Bola Tinubu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Mr. Peter Obi, without the board’s authorisation.

Abdullahi announced that Kwankwaso had been stripped of the NNPP national leader status by the board.

The secretary of the BoT said the purported suspension of the NNPP founder was a flagrant gross violation of the party’s constitution.

He pointed out that Aniebonam had resigned as the BoT chairman and a new BoT Chairman, Dr Chief Tope Aluko was elected with Abdulahi as new BoT Secretary, while High Chief Tony Obioha was elected as BoT spokesperson

Abdulahi said the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM) and National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders
(NAGAFF) had been rendered void by the actions of the NWC.

Abdulahi said: “The purported suspension of the founder is a flagrant gross violation of the NNPP constitution such that it is tantamount to recklessness and irresponsibility on the part of the incompetent NWC.

“The BoT decided that material evidence in the public sector affirmed that Kwankwaso was involved in anti-party activities in various meetings, suggest political discussions with the President, Atiku and Obi without authorisation from the board.

” This has earned him six months suspension pending the outcome of investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.

“The BOT insisted that the avoidable violation of MoU between NNPP on the one part and Kwankwasia, TNM and NAGAFF on the other has no other choice than to withdraw from the partnership.

“It is therefore to state clearly that the MOU have been rendered void.”

Also speaking, the acting chairman said his team would hit the ground running by healing the wounds created by the suspended NWC members.

Major said the party would remain the most ordinary friendly party in the country and urged other members that are displaced for one reason or the other to return to its fold.

“We don’t intend to shut anybody out or censor anybody but we want to ensure that we remain on track and maintain our people oriented ideology,” he said.

NAN reports that the special general assembly meeting was attended by the new NWC and members from across the country. (NAN)
