A cross section of women in Abuja on Sunday expressed diverse views on the use of contraceptives.

Some of the women told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that family planning was a necessity, yet a hectic journey.

Some said they found pregnancy prevention methods safe, while others said they steer clear because of the side effects.

Mrs Benita Sampson, a civil servant, said that her family planning method had been helpful because she does not have the fear of unplanned pregnancy.

“I use Nexplanon which is the arm birth control implant. I replace the implant every three years which is convenient for me.

”I sometimes forget I’m wearing it; it has been good because, unlike some other women, I usually see my menstrual cycle without hitches.

“It is, however, not a bed of roses. In September 2022, I went to replace my old implant and experienced bleeding for a month.

“The gynaecologist, however, told me that my body was just adjusting to the implant since I just finished a dose and was starting another.

“My menstrual cycle normalised after two months of that experience and I’ve been fine since then,” she said.

Mrs Chinonye Nwokenna, a mother of four, said she had an implant placed under her armpit for five years but had to remove it because she was gaining so much weight.

Nwokenna said she opted for the injection contraceptive which was taken every three months, but noted that it had its side effects.

“I had to remove the implant in my arm because I was gaining so much weight. I take the injection once in every three months, but I usually come down with headache.

“I prefer the injection; the headache is not serious and is better than gaining weight,” she said.

Mrs Joy Omoyeni, a housewife, said she was on the implant contraceptive for three years but still conceived her last child.

Some women have, however, kicked against any form of contraceptives which they believe is not necessary and should not be encouraged.

Mrs Esther Ojukwu, a civil servant and mother of seven, said she would not go for any kind of family planning as it is against her religious beliefs and faith.

“I am a Catholic and the Catholic faith does not encourage family planning. I try in my own possible way to avoid getting pregnant, but if it happens, I have no choice,” she said.

Mrs Jane Nnoli, a mother of three, said she would never engage in any form of family planning because of the side effects associated with the procedures.

Nnoli said that she prefers to abstain or use the withdrawal method as her husband does not enjoy the use of condom.

“I am afraid of family planning be it the implant, injection or any other form of family planning that has the ability to alter the way our body functions.

“I believe these contraceptives have long term effects on the user which the health care providers would not want to disclose.

“I am more comfortable with the withdrawal method or abstinence from sex during my ovulation period,” Nnoli said.

Meanwhile, a Senior Community Health Officer, Mr Sabo Sunday, has advised women to use the Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC), as it is considered the most effective method of family planning.

“We advise women to use the Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive Method. Although it is a hormonal contraceptive, it is reversable whenever you decide to do so, and it has a better advantage in women.

“The implants are the most effective forms of reversible birth control available. They are more effective than birth control pills, the patch or the ring.

“The benefits include cost effectiveness, few contraindications, few side effects and privacy; they are also rapidly reversible,” he said.

Mrs Roseline Egudu, a Nurse, told NAN that family planning in women helps to alter their regular reproductive system, adding that some tests are carried out before placing them on their preferred choice.

“Tests are usually carried out on the women before starting them on their preferred family planning. Some women bleed for weeks depending on the contraceptive while others take a long time trying to conceive when they are eventually ready.

“Few women experience memory loss, nausea, breast tenderness, heavy bleeding, headaches, weight gain, mood changes, prolong or irregular menstrual flow, among others, as side effects to these contraceptives while others experience nothing.

“Family planning has helped a lot of families in the spacing of their children and also in the avoidance of any pregnancy that is not needed, but in some cases that does not work as some women get pregnant,” Egudu said.

She said that the use of birth control pills usually stops ovulation, adding that it changes the lining of the womb which makes it difficult for fertilised eggs to be implanted. (NAN)(www.nannews.com.ng)

President Bola Tinubu has tasked the new cabinet ministers to hit the ground running by working hard to turn around the fortunes of the country.

He gave the charge on Monday while addressing the cabinet members at the opening of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.

“We have talents; we have the level of intellectuals and capacity to turn this country around. You and I know that the expectation is high. Therefore we must work hard, commit ourselves and create a buoyant economy that will serve every Nigerian.”

The president charged the ministers to work as a team, stressing that if they stay focused in the discharge of their responsibilities, the country would quickly move forward.

“Every one of you is a member of this team, we can do whatever we want from our areas of responsibility but it all depends on you. If you stay focused, we will all arrive at a better destination and the country will be better for it,” he said.

Tinubu added that the natural endowments of the country must be properly harnessed to make life better for citizens of the country.

“We must unlock the energy and natural resources of this country. We must start to produce for ourselves, dig ourselves out of the woods, focus on education, healthcare, and make social investments that are essential for the development of our people.

“Our priority areas are defined in our economic programmes. Every area is our priority and you belong in the driver’s position to realise and make that priority a fulfilling promise to the entire nation and the continent of Africa.

“We must achieve the economic growth that is expected of us. We must feed our people, we must leverage on what we have and grow more to satisfy Nigerians,” he said.

Tinubu said he would continue to listen to the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians and make corrections where necessary, as he enjoined the ministers to be bold in taking decisions that would move the nation forward.

“I am ready to listen. Like I said to the Nigerian Bar Association yesterday, I am ready even for corrections because only God is perfect. Don’t be afraid to make a decision; that’s the problem of leadership,” he said.

The president also said that the challenges confronting the nation like security, unemployment and food security would be addressed in order to alleviate the plight of citizens.(NAN)

Mr Matthias Schmale, United Nation Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, says there is the need for accelerated efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.

Schmale said this at the national conference on agenda 2030 and the SDGs organised by the Lagos State University Centre for the Actualisation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (LASU-SDG) on Monday in Lagos.

The conference with the theme: “At the Midpoint of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals:Which away Nigeria and Africa?” was organised by LASU-SDG in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre(UNIC), Abuja.

The coordinator said it was imperative that the 2030 agenda deadline of the SDGs is achieved with no one left behind.

According to him, in Nigeria, 133 million people face multidimensional poverty and more than 20 million are unemployed without urgent action.

“The 2030 agenda will become no more than a broken promise to the world’s most vulnerable people despite these many challenges.

“Africa remains a continent of hope and Nigeria a country of hope, because the long term structural endowments of Africa are strong. Africa also is the best investment proposition of the 21st century,” he said.

He noted that universities could be catalytic in three important ways because they have the largest youth population in Africa.

He noted that academia would have the opportunity to shape the design of solutions and policies that could have genuine social impacts.

“The outcomes from this conference will undoubtedly support collective rescue efforts and lay the ground work for the Nigeria’s preparation for next month Global SDGs Summit in New York.

“The UN and Nigeria hope that it will be possible for the Nigerian government to announce further initiatives in New York aimed at creating a social impact friendly environment,”Schmale said.

Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, Vice- Chancellor, LASU, in her remarks urged the university community to make the best use of the opportunity offered by the conference, saying it would be a catalyst for transformative change to achieve the SDGs.

Similarly, Prof. Tayo Ajayi, Director of Centre, LASU-SDG, said that the 2030 agenda for sustainable development envisions a present and future that are economically sustainable, socially inclusive and environmentally resilient.

Ajayi said that the SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, safeguard the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by the year 2030.

“The SDGs agenda covers a wide range of interconnected social, economic and environmental challenges; and the unique functions and expertise of universities are critical for overcoming all of these.

“Arguably, none of the SDGs can be achieved without the universities because they occupy a unique position within the society.

“As such, universities have a critical role in the achievement of the SDGs,” he said.

He added that LASU had keyed into this vision as a teaching and research centre with responsibilities of contributing to the growth and development of students, workers, stakeholders, governments and making global impacts. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nigeria’ll not sustain failed economic theory – Tinubu

Nigeria’ll not sustain failed economic theory – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria will not sustain failed economic theory that wasted 90 per cent of revenue in the servicing of external debts that can be used for development.

The president gave the assurance during the opening of the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association at the Chief MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

Tinubu said that prosperity would only occur once poverty is banished from the society with the cooperation of Nigeria’s private sector leaders.

“Can we continue to service external debts with 90 per cent of our revenue? It is a path to destruction. It is not sustainable.

‘’We must make the very difficult changes that are necessary for our country to get up from slumber and be respected among the great nations of the world,” he said.

Speaking on the theme of the conference, “Getting it Right: Charting the Course for Nigeria’s Nation-Building,” Tinubu said that decisions must be taken to set the country on a growth path.

“We cannot have the country we desire without the reforms we have initiated. It is painful at the beginning, in the short and medium term, but we must do what we have to do to take this nation to its great destiny.

‘’It is not about you and it is not about me. It is about our generations yet unborn, for whom we must bequeath a great and prosperous country,” he said.

Against the backdrop of the judicial reforms he undertook as Lagos State Governor, Tinubu renewed his commitment to conclude the issue of remuneration for judicial officers and legal practitioners.

He noted that true justice reform must begin with world-class salaries and benefits for legal professionals in Nigeria.

“You are learned. I want to learn. Why are we so blessed and we are still lacking? We must have a change of attitude and a change of our mind set.

We accuse our nation and its previous leaders. We complain a lot of the past. Is that the solution? No! Let us look forward and be determined! God has given us what we need.

‘’We must work hard with determination to make our country great and it begins with you who are seated here with me,” he said.

Referring to an address by the Chairman of UBA Plc and Heirs Holdings, Mr Tony Elumelu, the president decried the inability of the country to eradicate poverty and tackle poor electricity supply.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensure that Nigeria generates and distributes the needed electricity for economic development.

“Yes, it is a shame not to have adequate electricity for the mass majority of homes in Nigeria and to power our industries. How can we address poverty without electricity?

‘’We can take many people out of poverty with uninterrupted electricity supply. Poverty is not acceptable, and we must banish it,” the President said.

The NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, expressed the confidence of the body in the ability of the President to deliver good governance to Nigeria.

He said this was because of Tinubu’s pedigree and past track record of excellent performance in Lagos State, where he was the governor between 1999 and 2007.

“President Tinubu got it right in Lagos, and it is our considered expectation that as President of Nigeria, you will not only replicate your achievements in Lagos, but surpass them for our country.”

The conference, attended by over 16,190 lawyers, include the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi; Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila and Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

Others are the Minister of Sports, Sen. John Enoh; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, past NBA Presidents and senior government officials. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ex-lawmaker hails Tinubu’s intervention in Nigeria/UAE airline visa dispute

A former member of the House of Representatives, Robinson Uwak, on Sunday, commended President Bola Tinubu on his move to resolve Nigeria’s dispute with the United Arab Emirate (UAE)’s Airline and its visa issuance.
Uwak, in a statement, said President Tinubu’s move would reopen that corridor for Nigerians, who usually visit UAE for business and leisure and deepen the cooperation between both nations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Emirates Airline had, in October 2022, suspended its operations in Nigeria over allegations that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) failed to approve for the repatriation of backlog of funds accruing to its operations in the country.
Tinubu had, on Aug. 25, while receiving the ambassador of the UAE, Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi in Abuja, promised to personally intervene in the dispute and amicably resolve it.
Uwak said the two countries ought to sustain their cooperation with reference to the reports that Nigerians spend an estimated N3.3 billion weekly ($381m per year) on flights to the UAE with Emirates Airlines, the UAE flag carrier, having the lion’s share of that amount.
“Nigeria as a leading market in Africa should have equal access to the other big markets in the globe for trade and investment and leisure activities,” he said.
NAN reports that President Tinubu, while receiving Al-Shamsi, had said: “We must work together. We need to agree on core aviation and immigration issues,” in a statement signed by his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale.
Al-Shamsi was also quoted in the same statement to have said: “We are getting somewhere. These are small issues, all within a family, and they will be resolved.”(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Revival School, in collaboration with Unclesele and Nitche Entertainment, has launched ‘The Little Miss Rainbow’ platform to build the girl-child’s confidence and self-discovery.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, which held on Saturday in Lagos, with the theme, ‘Embracing the Essence of Womanhood,’ was aimed at redressing the stereotyping of women and consequent loss of their identity.

According to the convener of the ‘Little Miss Rainbow’ pageant, Mrs Preere Opuofoni, the platform aims to change the narrative of negative description and stereotyping of the girl-child.

“Little Miss Rainbow is a pageant that would help solidify your daughter’s identity by giving her a platform to safely express herself.

“It will also help build confidence and give the girl-child an opportunity to be a voice for her generation,” said Opuofoni.

She explained that the rainbow symbolised fascination, hope, and calm after the storm; a pot of gold and good fortune.

“A woman personifies ageless beauty, selfless love, purity, grace and dignity. She symbolises virtue, great inner strength, tremendous patience, resilience and fortitude.

“She is the pillar of strength not only to her family but also to the society and the country as a whole; women are the backbone of a nation’s economy,”Opuofoni said.

In addition she noted that, “A true woman should naturally embrace her femininity, regardless of status or circumstance in life.

“Little Miss Rainbow derives its essence from the mission of ‘The Revival School’ which was established in 2022 as an all-volunteer school to build a community of believers/commissioned kingdom citizens.

“Its goal is centred at helping others experience a deeper level of intimacy and trust in God by hosting the presence of the Holy Spirit.”

After a keenly contested exercise, Ms Vanessa Edet emerged as the Little Miss Rainbow 2023.

The organisers intend to make the Little Miss Rainbow pageant an annual event to foster the girl-child’s confidence. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Some media experts have urged journalists to embrace data journalism to enhance citizens access to the right information.

The experts gave the task at a day workshop organised for journalists on “Data Journalism and Media Standards,” on Saturday in Lokoja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was organised by Stallion Times Media Services with support from the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, and funded by MacArthur Foundation.

Mr Charles Mbah, a journalisr and Data Analyst, who is a Facilitator at the workshop, said data journalism would help to reduce the skill of misinformation and disinformation.

He added that data journalism, which represented facts, would help citizens to get the right information that they could use to hold government accountable.

Mbah enjoined journalists to be intentional about using data journalism to drive their profession whether in broadcast or investigative journalism, among others.

“Journalists should be intentional about data journalism; though it could be time consuming.

“They should make it a gradual process, because it is very important as we are in the age of misinformation and disinformation,” Mbah said.

On his part, Mr Isiyaku Ahmed, the Project Coordinator of Get Involved, Dialogue and Improve Project (GDRIP), said data journalism present information in a visual form, making it easier for people to understand.

Ahmed, who doubles as the Editor-In-Chief of Stallion Times, stressed the need for journalists to maintain “Media Standards” in carrying out their duties.

“The workshop is just to remind ourselves of what are those standards that we practice as professional media that make us to stand out as journalists.

“The media standards are enshrined in the Press Freedom and Code of Ethics for any practicing journalist,” he said.

Ahmed therefore enjoined journalists not to restrict themselves only to the Code of Ethics in journalism, but they should also make use of the instrument of press freedom.

According to him, journalists should know the roles their organisations want them to play as well as seeing the obligation they have for the community, and put them side by side their constitutional role, which is holding government accountable. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Some parents in Kubwa, a suburb in the Federal Capital Territory, have called on the federal and state governments to develop bicycle lanes on roads for students who have bicycles to ride to schools and other places safe.

They made the call at the second edition of a 10-kilometre cycling competition organised for students Abuja.

The competition tagged “Bikers Race: Cycling is Fun”, was organised by Apexdotcom in collaboration with Dynamic Women on Point.

Mrs Marian Oluwapidan, a parent and one of the organisers of the competition, said that the competition would encourage children to take themselves to school or go on errands.

She explained that the competition would also build confidence, stamina and a better mental capabilities of the students.

“With this fuel subsidy removal, they will not need school bus, with their bicycles, they can actually ride to school.

“When they get to school they can park their bicycles and when they are done, they take their bikes and go back home.

“This will reduce the stress on the parents trying to pay for school bus or trying to pay for commercial motorcycles, but once they have a proper bicycle, they can ride to school,” she said.

Another parent and one of the organisers, Mrs Gloria Eloho-Uduokhia, observed that the initiative was to enhance the wellbeing and physical fitness of the students.

“The economic situation in the country is something else as fuel price is on the high side.

“We organised this competition so that the students prefer to ride their bikes to schools.

“With this, we are also calling on the government to create lanes on the roads for students to be able to ride their bicycles safely,” she said.

Master Dominion Caleb, who emerged over all winner of the competition, appreciated the group for coming up with the competition.

“It was a good experience and I want to thank God for making me come first,” he said.

At the end of the competition, prizes were given to the winners and runner-up participants in each category.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
