The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) says it has stepped up measure on ending the disease by 2035,  as it inaugurated its new country office building in Abuja on Wednesday.

The National Director, TLMN, Dr Sudnay Udo, said   at the inauguration ceremony that “the expansion of the mission goes beyond a bigger space to an innovative space where strategies will be developed to ending leprosy.”

According to him,  TLMN’s new office building not only celebrates the physical manifestation of growth and progress but a significant milestone of a mission striving for zero transmission to leprosy, zero disabilities and zero discrimination.

“It is not about the building, it is not about the bricks and walls, it is about a space that is conducive for us to think, plan, innovate, we want to actually end leprosy in our life time.

“We want to control Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), we want to eradicate NTDs, we are not playing.

“TLM as a global entity will be 150 years next year and we have told ourselves that 150 years, it is time to end this thing.

“As we speak, we are putting together strategy for zero transmission of leprosy by 2035. That is our next major goal.

“We have done that as a health community for small pox, polio has already been squashed to the ground. Leprosy is the end as far as I am concerned. By 2035 it will be thrown to the dustbin of history,’’ Udo said.

Udo lauded TLM England and Wales for their support, the governments of Nigeria, Australia and Sweden, and other partners.

Mr Peter Waddup, Country Leader, TLM England and Wales said that TLM England and Wales was honored to be part of the journey to ending Leprosy in Nigeria.

Waddup expressed optimism that the new office building would enhance the capacity of TLM Nigeria, as he advised on early detection and treatment.

“We believe that eradicating leprosy in our lifetime is possible and we are just so thrilled to be part of the Leprosy Mission family and working in partnership with the leprosy mission Nigeria.

“And now that they have this new facility, we believe that they can make great strides to the goal of ending leprosy

“I will say that everyone needs to understand that leprosy is curable and very, very quickly.

“If you find the early signs of fair patch of skin then go to a doctor, come to the representatives of Leprosy Mission in Nigeria, they will give you the pills. It is when you hide in the way that it becomes an issue,” Waddup said.

Prof. James Ayatse, Tor Tiv and President, Association of Christian Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, said that the building would serve as a strategic hub that would enable TLMN to achieve its goals.

Ayatse also shed more light on leprosy, waring against the myths surrounding the disease, urging everyone to be agents of ending the disease, avoid discrimination against people with the disease, and show them love.

“This building will serve as a strategic hub, enabling TLM Nigeria to expand its reach, foster greater collaboration with stakeholder at all levels, enhance its research capabilities.

“And sustain its interventions towards transforming the lives of people and community affected by leprosy.

“Leprosy is treatable, curable, preventable and its treatment is free. We must keep challenging the deep-rooted myths and stereotypes surrounding the disease. It is not contagious, it is not hereditary and it is not a curse.

“We must eradicate the stigma and prejudice associated with leprosy. People associated with the disease are like you and me, deserving of acceptance and support.

“Let us build a society where no one suffers in silence and stigma becomes a thing of the past,” Ayatse said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Australian High Commissioner of Nigeria Leann Johnston, Swedish Deputy Head of Mission to Nigeria, Joran Bjallerstedt congratulated TLMN on the giant stride, pledging the continuous support of their governments. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Kogi APC governorship: Court dismisses Smart Adeyemi’s suit against Ododo

Kogi APC governorship: Court dismisses Smart Adeyemi’s suit against Ododo

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Sen. Smart Adeyemi, an aspirant in the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) governorship primaries in Kogi, against the emergence of the candidate of the party, Usman Ododo, saying it lacks merit.

Delivering judgment in the suit marked FHC/CS/556/2023,
Justice James Omotosho held that Adeyemi’s allegations were criminal in nature, as he alleged that elections did not hold and that the produced results were forged.
He said the plaintiff needed to prove the allegations of forgery, falsification of results beyond reasonable doubts.
The court noted that the burden of proof was on the applicant to produce the forged result or the original and the forged results to discharge the burden, adding that failure to discharge the burden was fatal to the case of the applicant.
The court held that contrary to the position of the plaintiff, there was evidence that the primary election was validly held and monitored by INEC.
It held that allegations the plaintiff raised in the suit were criminal in nature and therefore ought to be proved beyond every reasonable doubt.
The judge held that Adeyemi failed to discharge the burden of proof that was placed on him by the law.
“There is enough proof before this court to slow that indeed a direct primary election of the APC held in Kogi state on April 14.

The judge said that Adeyemi had lodged a complaint  after he lost the election before an appeal committee that was constituted by the APC.

The court held that the evidence before it showed that Adeyemi failed to appear before the committee to prove his allegations.
The court said it found no reason to invalidate the outcome of the primary election. Consequently, the judge dismissed the suit as lacking in merit.

“In the final analysis, having reviewed all the evidence in this matter, I have no doubt that the APC primary election result held in all the wards of Kogi State on the 14th day of April 2023 and I so hold.

“This Honourable Court will not allow the will of a few just like that of the Applicant to override the will of the majority. The Applicant’s case has no merit. It is hereby dismissed.”

Speaking with newsmen through his counsel, Mr Adekunle Otitoju, the former lawmaker said he was heading to the Court of Appeal to challenge the judgment of the lower court.

Adeyemi said he was dissatisfied with the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja which dismissed his case.
Justice James Omotosho had in his judgement, affirmed the primary election that produced Ododo as candidate of the party for the governorship election billed to hold in the state in November.
The judge held that Adeyemi did not prove his allegation that Ododo was not lawfully nominated by the APC.
The plaintiff had in his suit  marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/556/2023, sought the cancellation of the primary election on the grounds that it was not validly conducted.
He prayed the court to declare the primary election as illegal, unlawful and invalid.
Adeyemi told the court that Ododo was handpicked as flag-bearer of the party by Gov. Yahaya Bello, in gross violation of Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution, Section 29 and 84 of the Electoral Act as well as Article 20 of the Constitution of the APC.
He prayed the court to give an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise Ododo as the bonafide candidate of the party for the governorship election.
The aggrieved governorship aspirant further  prayed the court to order the APC to conduct a fresh primary election and to give all aspirants an equal opportunity as provided for in the Electoral Act, 2022.
Adeyemi, through his counsel, said he would take the case to the appellate court.
He insisted that the trial court failed to properly evaluate the proof of evidence that was placed before it by the parties.
He insisted that there were inconsistencies in the report that was tendered by the INEC and affidavit that was deposed by the APC.
Adeyemi alleged that whereas INEC claimed that option A4 mode was adopted for the primary election it monitored, the APC, told the court that the election was through secret ballot.
The former lawmaker had in a 35 paragraph affidavit he filed in support of his originating summons, told the court that he obtained nomination and expression of interest forms from the party at the cost of N50 million.
He said he was subsequently screened and cleared to participate in the primary election that was slated for April 14.
Adeyemi told the court that while he waited at his constituency to cast his vote along with his people, he was shocked when information came to him that the purported primary election had been conducted and a purported winner declared.
Adeyemi prayed the court to nullify the governorship primary election and order the APC to conduct a fresh one.(NAN) www.nannews.ng

Subsidy removal will heighten demand for renewable energy —- Expert

Subsidy removal will heighten demand for renewable energy —- Expert

A renewable energy expert, Mr Uka Ibe, has described the removal of fuel subsidy as a good economic decision which favoured the demand for renewable energy in Nigeria.

Ibe stated this while speaking on the acceptability of green energy regarding climate change advocacy with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The Chief Executive Officer of Nexgen Energy and Allied Services Limited stated that there was the need for the implementation of government policies to tackle issues of climate change.

He said there had been more consideration for renewable energy products from his company, as informed by their distribution frequency.

“Yes, there has been an increasing uptake in the demand for renewable energy sources, in particular the solar hybrid systems, since the removal of fuel subsidy, which is a good economic decision,” Ibe said.

He, however, said the demand would have been more if the prices of green alternatives had not been affected by the removal of multiple exchange rates.

Ibe said the cost of importation has led to the increase in prices of solar power systems because Nigerian companies have challenges in accessing foreign exchange to import production inputs.

“Overall, I will say that in spite of this, there has been an uptake in the actual sales of solar power systems.

“It is now becoming the mainstream of energy deployment services in Nigeria, with about 10 per cent uptake recorded since the new administration took over,” he said.

Ibe added that in spite of the downward trend that usually come with seasonal changes, especially characterising the business during the rainy season, sales have continued to boom.

“Renewable energy products work for all categories of productive users, and there are no limitations as to what they can do.”

Ibe allayed the fear that solar systems were limited in their services, explaining that the sun with advanced technologies could serve human needs 10 times over.

He said the only limitation is the availability of funds to provide for the different needs of users.

“However, the good thing about solar systems is that they are scalable.

“When people start with what they can afford with the budget they have, they can increase the capacity with time as they have the resources.

“So, often times, the challenge is not what solar power system can do, but the finance to harness its potentials, which are unlimited,” Ibe said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators in Nigeria (ASOHON) has advocated for the review of existing laws and policies that defined the rights and protection of orphans in Nigeria.

The association made the call during its 2023 National Conference, themed: “Advocating for Change: Policy and Legislative Measures for Orphans Welfare,” on Tuesday in Abuja.

Mr Gabriel Oyediji, ASOHON’S National President, noted the increasing number of orphaned and vulnerable children in the society, calling for laws that will protect their rights and prioritise their well-being.

“We are advocating legislative policies and measures that establishes comprehensive legal frameworks that define the rights and protection of orphans, including access to education, healthcare, inheritance and legal representation.

“A proactive streamlining and harmonisation of adoption processes, reducing bureaucracy and ensuring the best interest of the child are prioritised while maintaining appropriate safeguards.

“Legislative policies and measures that strengthens foster care system including robust screening, training and support to foster families to provide stable and nurturing environment for orphaned children,” he said.

Oyediji also called for legislative policies that ensure availability of monthly grants for operators of registered homes as well as robust budgetary fund allocations to social development and humanitarian ministries across the country.

He said establishing mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement of funds and resources allocated for orphan welfare was also necessary to ensure accountability and address their challenges.

The ASOHON president also noted the issue of child trafficking and exploitation, financial constraints, emotional and psychological well-being of the orphans as some of the challenges facing orphans and orphanage operation.

“We cannot overlook the issue of child trafficking and exploitation, which poses a significant threat to the well-being of orphaned and vulnerable children.

“Criminal elements often prey on these children, exploiting their vulnerability for various purposes, including forced labour, sex trafficking and organ trafficking.

“As orphanage operators, we must be vigilant and implement stringent safeguards to protect the children under our care from such heinous acts.

“We must collaborate with law enforcement agencies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and other stakeholders to create a robust child protection system that ensures the safety and security of every child,” he said.

He therefore urged all stakeholders, especially the orphanage operators, to continue to strive towards providing their needs, ensure they have access to education, healthcare and other necessary requirements.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-day conference had in attendance orphanage operators, religious leaders, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Artificial Intelligence will curb fraud in auditing processes – Firm

A development training institute, Coinmac International, has suggested the adoption of Artificial Intelligence to curb fraud and misappropriation so as to improve auditing processes in the public sector.

Its Managing Director, Mr Ayo Salam, gave the suggestion in Abuja on Monday at the opening of a training workshop on Developing, Improving and Monitoring the Internal Audit Function.

The training was organised for Internal Audit staff of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC).

He said the new administration should do more to reduce corruption in the public sector by training and retraining auditors in the country.

According to him, when auditors are properly trained, there will be adequate knowledge to block corruption loopholes.

“Adopting new technologies on auditing processes will help many organisations.

“As the business world changes at an accelerating rate, auditors need to continually add to their skills and knowledge to stay relevant; they need to remain educated on changes in business in general, and in audit processes.

“There has to be transparency and accountability; information and communication technology currently rules the world.

“We can, as much as possible, discourage corruption with institutional development. We can do this by ensuring we have schools for auditing that can build capacity for auditors. That is the purpose for this meeting.

“Internal auditors are key agents in preventing corruption and ensuring compliance to relevant laws and policies. Auditing the public sector will prevent mistakes and shortcomings in public administration.”

Salam said that raising the internal audit quality in N-HYPPADEC would ensure that the establishment continued to be free of corruption, while financial transparency and accountability would receive a boost.

He added that establishing and strengthening internal audit departments in government establishments would mitigate the misuse and abuse of public offices and complement efforts of anti-graft agencies.

The Managing Director, N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Yelwa, in a remark, said that the workshop would upgrade the Commission’s Audit Unit into a robust one.

“We shall build an honest and responsible workforce in line with the aspirations of the Presidency,” he declared.

Yelwa urged participants to embrace new ideas and solutions to auditing challenges so as to promote innovation and creativity.

He expressed optimism that his officers would gain more knowledge on the significance of professional ethics such as confidentiality and independent viewpoint in auditing.

“We expect that they understand the risks and ethical responsibilities of compromising auditing process to suit personal interests or the interests of senior officers.

“The participants should also know that workshops such as this one, are not enough to make them exceptionally competent in their field.

“I, therefore, implore each of you to put in personal efforts towards enhancing your professional capacity,” he stated. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

The ECOWAS Federation of Chamber of Mines (ECEFCOM) on Monday congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his election as the chairman of the economic community.

The Chairman, Executive Council of the ECOWAS ECEFCOM, Alhaji Sani Shehu, said this in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Shehu said that the ECEFCOM strongly believed that Tinubu’s well deserved election of the ECOWAS came at a time when countries in the West African sub-region needed his experience.
He said that the President’s experience and support would help to address myriads of political and economic challenges bedeviling the sub-region.

“We heartily rejoice with the president of Nigeria over his election as Chairman of ECOWAS.

“Its a feat that is not surprising that Tinubu has distinguished himself as a leader capable of transforming the economic fortunes of Nigeria and of the member countries of ECOWAS.

“The ECOWAS Federation of Chamber of Mines (ECEFCOM) therefore, welcomes Mr President’s leadership of ECOWAS with great enthusiasm.

“Our expectations are positive and high, considering his track record in leadership and industry.

“We look forward to working with the president in his capacity as chairman of ECOWAS and president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We are confident that the cooperation we seek will be instrumental in turning around the economic fortunes of the West African sub-region and the African continent by extension,” he said.

Shehu said that Tinubu had a great zeal and preparedness to take West Africa to the next economic level.

He called on the president to use his good office to bring innovative development in the ECOWAS.

“On our part at the ECOWAS Federation of Chamber of Mines, we have resolved to support and work with the ECOWAS under the chairmanship of the president.

“Our commitment is to ensure that we assist him to rectify a number of challenges that are common in the mining sector of the sub-region.

“The challenges include foreign dominance of the mining/extractive sector, especially the very disturbing illegal mining operations of some Chinese nationals in the West African sub-region.”

Shehu said that some Chinese nationals contributed to the development of West African mining sector, while some involved in illegal mining activities.

“While we appreciate the contribution of the Chinese, we also appeal to the president to intervene and address the problem in line with the provision of the charter establishing the organisation.

“In fairness to the Chinese, some of their nationals deserve commendation for their efforts that have helped to advance the economic development of the region.

“Except that some Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining operations which has become very destructive of the economy of the member nations of ECOWAS.

“The illegal mining activities of the Chinese have been particularly worrisome and responsible for apprehension in some parts of Africa.

“Some local mining communities in the sub-region have been at war with Chinese whom they say are destroying the environment through illegal mining operations,” he said.

Shehu also called on the president to address the challenges of cross border conflicts arising in the sub-region as a result of mineral theft.

He said that solid minerals did not recognise border and could be moved illegally from one country to another.

He said that the border communities sometimes tended to have some misunderstanding due to the movement of solid mineral across the nations in the sub region.

“We appeal to the newly elected chairman of ECOWAS to initiate a value addition strategy on mineral from countries in the sub region.

“Strategy that will put an end to the exportation of raw, unprocessed mineral ores from ECOWAS member states.

“We appeal to the president as well, to establish a win-win diplomatic relationship with industrial nations such as China, Europe, U.S.

“This will encourage countries in the West African sub region to establish a value addition and beneficiation centres and mineral processing centres in West African countries that can process mineral to end users in the sub region.

“When this is done, the region will have additional income and create massive employment. It will also facilitate technology transfer to the sub-region.”

Shehu urged the president to adopt a uniform policy that would boost the standard of living in the West African sub-region. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FCTA demolishes illegal structures in Gishiri community

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday demolished houses and structures allegedly erected illegally in Gishiri community in Katampe District of the territory.

Officials of the Development Control Department of the FCTA, accompanied by joint security personnel, stormed the area with two bulldozers and pulled down the structures.

Mr Samson Atureta, District Monitor, Katampe and Mabushi District, FCTA, who led the team, said the exercise was part of continued efforts to reclaim lands developed by illegal occupants.

Atureta, a town planner, said the illegal occupants erected the structures on peoples’ plots, allocated for residential and commercial buildings, including those for educational and religious purposes.

He said the exercise started about two months ago, adding that, “this is our fourth visit to remove illegal structures and extensions in the community.

“There are many illegal developments and extensions in the Gishiri community, that is why we are clearing it for the rightful owners to take possession of their plots.

“So, what we are doing here is to ensure that those developments either in the form of buildings or extensions, are removed.

“So far, we have removed more than 100 illegal structures in the area,” he said.

He assured residents that the houses of indigenes and those with legal papers would not be tempered with.

He said that owners of the affected structures were duly notified about the intended demolition, adding that final notice had been issued a week ago, asking the occupants to remove their valuables and vacate the area.

One of the affected residents, who simply identified herself as Mama Blessing, said they were not given enough time to leave.

Blessing, who operates a drinking joint, appealed to the FCTA to provide them an alternative place to relocate.

“We are not rejecting the demolition exercise because we know that it is government land, but demolishing our houses and structures without providing an alternative place for us is really painful,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Rev. Unuefe Ikhiuwu, the General Overseer, Christ Chosen Church of God (CCCG) International, has called for peaceful coexistence among different religions and tribes to enable Nigeria achieve its full potential.

Ikhiuwu made the call in Abuja on Sunday during a combined thanksgiving service to mark the end of a weeklong tour of the church facilities in Abuja, Kaduna and Niger.

The clergyman who frowned at negative comments made by some politicians, said that even though tribe and tongue may differ, Nigerians are one.

“Religion should not divide us. I pray for unity of all believers and everyone. We should live in peace whether Christians or Muslims,” he said.

The cleric said that no country had ever achieved success without peace and unity.

According to him, political leaders in the country have a duty to unite Nigerians and provide them with the dividends of democracy.

This, he said, would give every Nigerian a sense of belonging and ready to support those in authority to make the country better.

“Today’s message, I talked about what has become modus operandi or the mission of the church and it’s a job which no one man can do.

“It’s a ministry of reconciliation that every one of us is expected to work for; I likened the church also to the nation.

“By the grace of God, I pray that every Nigerian should be supported by those in authority to make Nigeria better than how the present administration met it.”

He said all Nigerians must collectively work for peace in the country.

“I always talk about renewal of hope; hope unlimited, peace and blessing to the people that all hand must be on deck.

“Nigerians are expected to work as a team just as the human body, the leg, eyes, hands and other parts are working in synergy to make the body good.

“All hands must be on deck for success to be achieved,” Ikhiuwu added.

He noted that his coming to Abuja had afforded him the opportunity to see the peaceful nature of the city and urged other states to emulate the Federal Capital Territory.

Apostle Dr Pius Igberase, Head of Administration of the Church, while speaking on the sidelines of the Church service, urged Christians to always preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Igbarase said that the inspection of projects and the seminar, was to encourage everyone to do more work for God.

Also, Apostle Samuel Idedevo, the Resident Pastor of the Headquarter Church, Abuja, said heaven blessed those who work according to God’s covenant.

“God has promised to bless believers because He is the owner of silver and gold. God will only give silver and gold to those who trust and believe in Him.

“So, no man gets blessing without God. The source is from God and it’s inexhaustible.

“And money is made to promote the cause and advancement of the gospel. I pray that we access the blessing.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
