The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has called on Ministerial Special and Technical Assistants in the immediate past administration to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration to succeed.

Akume called for the support of Tinubu by the former staff of President Muhammadu Buhari so enable him succeed in the socioeconomic and political development of Nigeria.

Akume made the appeal when the ex-ministerial aides, under the aegis of the Network of former Ministerial Aides (NETMA), paid him a courtesy visit on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, Tinubu means well for this country, adding that he is a committed leader who is completely detribalised and committed to the peace and development of the country.

“President Tinubu is very passionate about creating a new path to the greatness of Nigeria through the faithful implementation of the renewed hope agenda of the new administration.

“I urge you to reach out to the Nigerian people with details of the various policies and programmes of the administration.

“This should be done in view of your unique national outlook given your membership that cuts across gender, religious and ethnic backgrounds,” Akume urged.

Earlier, the Chairman of the group and leader of the delegation, Dr Philip Ugbodaga, said that the body was originally set up for synergistic purposes.

He also added that it was for effective coordination of inter-ministerial responsibilities by Special Assistants as well as a strategic peer review platform among aides during their tenure with former ministers.

Ugbodaga, who served as Special Assistant to the immediate past Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, commended Tinubu for finding a very worthy personality in Akume for appointment as the SGF.

He noted that Akume had distinguished himself in politics and service to the country and to humanity.

“You played a very critical role in the victory of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, in the last general elections.

“With remarkable intellectual acumen and experiences signposted by your very impactful tenure as the governor of Benue State for eight years, you should be applauded.

“Even as a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for 12 years and as a minister in the immediate past administration for four years, you have done well.
“The country is blessed to have you in the new administration to fitly coordinate and provide crucial impetus to the swift execution of government policies in the renewed agenda of President Tinubu,” Ugbodaga stated.
He explained that the group, the first in the history of the country, existed as the Network of Ministerial Aides (NETMA) during the last administration and had now been transformed to a ‘Policy Advisory Think Tank’.
According to Ugbodaga, as a ‘think tank’, the group looks forward to working closely with the new administration to establish cooperation and partnership at all levels.
Especially as the body has experts in every area urgently needed for the social, political and economic rejuvenation of Nigeria.
“We are confident that, working closely with you, we can offer the services of individual members of our organisation to the new administration in relevant capacities.
“This is as deemed appropriate in the implementation of the renewed hope agenda of President Tinubu, by drawing on our institutional memory working in the last administration,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit had in attendance 39 members representing the aides who served in Buhari’s administration from 2015 to 2023. (NAN)

Senate to constitute special, standing committees before July ending — Bamidele

Senate to constitute special, standing committees before July ending — Bamidele

The Senate will constitute special and standing committees before end of this month, this is according to the new Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele.

The senate leader said this while briefing newsmen after his emergence as the majority leader of the 10th Senate on Tuesday in Abuja.

Bamidele said that with the emergence of the majority and minority caucuses which make up the principal officers, they would hit the ground running.

According to him, “Before long, during the month of July, we will have all the committees; special and standing committees properly constituted.

“For us, the next task is to ensure we hit the ground running so that from tomorrow, we are able to take steps that will show that we have a clear understanding of what is to be done.

“The first task ahead of us is to constitute special committees of the 10th Senate. Our rules make provision for six special committees.

“This is so that every senator can get busy based on their own professional background and can properly fit into the sector where they can add value.

“We are ready to attend to correspondence from the executive. Through the committee of the whole of the house, we will commence with the confirmation hearing of the Service Chiefs and some other appointees who had been named by the President.”

He assured that as the new leadership had emerged, it would ensure that that seriousness is attached to all legislative assignments.

“By the grace of God, we will be able to make a difference that will be positive that will be worth the effort of all of you that worked with us in ensuring that the two presiding officers emerged in a manner that was not rancorous.

“But of course, the emergence of the remaining principal officers of the 10th Senate was not an issue that was meant to be decided on the floor.

“Rather, it was an issue which on the one hand as related to the All Progressives Party (APC) needed to be decided among the critical stakeholders of the party. This was what led to the emergence of the officers.

“On the other hand, with respect to the minority parties, again it wasn’t entirely a party affair because it wasn’t a typical situation where you have one opposition party but rather six political parties were involved.

“Fifty of our colleagues were involved. So rather than it being a decision to be taken at the secretariat of political parties it was more of a decision taken by members who were elected on the platform of the six minority parties.

“Thirty eight of them by virtue of their signature took a decision as to who their leaders will be and of course this was also communicated to their respective political parties and as democrats, all the presiding officers did was to follow suit because more than a single majority had decided.”

Bamidele added that it had been a no victor no vanquish situation adding that “we are happy eventually a leadership has emerged for the 10th Senate.”(NAN)

Forge NYSC certificate risk jail term – Official

Forge NYSC certificate risk jail term – Official

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says forgers of its discharge or exemption certificates risk jail term, option of fine or both as penalties.

The Director, Legal Services, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim said this on Monday in Abuja during the 2023 Legal Officers’ Capacity Building Training.

The theme of training exercise is “The Role of the Legal Officer in the Defence of the Public Service in Nigeria”.

According to Ibrahim, the NYSC Act contains all the infractions that people should know about.

“The infractions are many, like forging the NYSC certificates.

“Also, persons that are supposed to go for youth service as specified in the Act are not coming for youth service while those that are supposed to come for service will do but will not complete it and abscond.

“Therefore, the Act itself has specified what is to be done in respect to these instances”.

Ibrahim also said some attend the orientation camps with forged documents and when such persons are caught, they are arrested by the police for prosecution.

He said that though such cases abound in court, that the exact number could not be determined, adding that they were being followed up.

“The punishment, first of all is to arrest them, the police will now charge them to court and it is now left for the courts to decide if it is imprisonment or fine.

“It is at the discretion of the court to say this is what we are going to do as the term of imprisonment.

“If you are found guilty by the court, the court can give you two years jail term depending on the type of offence or three years or an option of fine or both jail term and fine.”

Regarding Corps Producing Institutions’ (CPIs) involvement in such infractions, Ibrahim said that those caught the NYSC engages in ‘lifting of veil of corporate personality’ of such institutions.

According to him, if they submit names of unqualified corps members they are also guilty and sent to court.

He said the punishment to be meted to such institutions was also at the discretion of the court.

He, however, said that such institutions are not delisted but are allowed to still send the names of their intending their corps members for mobilisation.

He also said that it was worrisome that such infractions were coming up day by day.

On the essence of the training, he said a lot of people were committing a lot of infractions against the NYSC Act.

He said therefore, it deemed it necessary to ensure that members of the public to know exactly what the Act contains and what they should do and should not do.

The Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, said that enhancement of capacity building to stimulate efficiency and higher corporate performance was in line with one of the focal areas of his policy thrust to the scheme.

Ahmed, represented by Ibrahim, said the training was organised to enhance the capacity and knowledge of legal officers in the scheme on their professional roles in the defence of the Public Service in Nigeria.

He said that the training was expected to harness the potentials of the legal officers in the scheme for improved professional services.

“Over the past 50 years of existence of the scheme, our experience has shown that the decision by management to train and re-train staff of the scheme has proven to be very fruitful.

“This is especially in the training of legal officers, judging from the laudable achievements recorded so far by the Legal Unit and the professional conduct by legal officers in the scheme.

“The unit has kept faith with its mandate of rendering quality legal advice to the NYSC management and has shown due diligence in handling cases involving the scheme in different Courts of Law in Nigeria.

“To further contribute to the achievements of the legal unit, this training is an ideal platform to evaluate the activities of the unit with a view to breaking new grounds towards strengthening the values of the scheme.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training is expected to enhance their competence and practical performance/service delivery in the areas of legal drafting and litigation in both civil and criminal matters.

Allow children follow their passion, pioneer NAN EIC urges parents

Allow children follow their passion, pioneer NAN EIC urges parents

By Grace Alegba
The pioneer Editor-In-Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Prof. Victor Adefela, has advised parents to allow their children to follow their passion in choosing career paths, to help them succeed in life.
The 85-year-old professor gave the advice on Friday while presenting his new book titled “Notes Along The Way” at NAN Media Centre in Iganmu, Lagos.
Adefela, who was accompanied by his wife, Oluyemisi, also spoke on how the COVID-19 lockdown and the attendant boredom of staying indoors, in the U.S., eventually resulted in him putting pen to paper to author the book.
He said passion for journalism drew him into the profession and it had been a wonderful experience since becoming one, with him visiting no fewer than 40 countries across the globe.
According to him, life is interesting and meaningful when people do what they actually like, as against professions imposed by parents for various reasons.
“Whatever your children want to do, let it be and give them the support.
“Let people be what they want to be, that is the only way they can find fulfilment,” he said.
Speaking about his book, he said it was a collective story of his life journey.
He said he spent one tenth of his life in NAN and so devoted one tenth of the over 200-page book to the agency, which impacted his life positively.
“This is not the story of NAN, this is the story of Victor Adefela,” he said.
Adefela, Editor-in-Chief of NAN from 1977 to 1985, said coming to work in the agency was the highpoint and most fulfilling aspect of his career life.
“In all my working years, I think the years in NAN were definitely the most productive and the most satisfying,” he said.
The professor said change is constant and everything, people and institutions evolve and are not static, but only passion endures and remains.
“In whatever you do, it is self fulfilment that matters,” he said.
Adefela said he and his pioneer colleagues were excited working hard to achieve something new and useful for growth of the nation.
He expressed hope that the current staff members in NAN were going to uphold the high standard they met.
Earlier, while introducing the author, the Managing Director of NAN, Mr Buki Ponle, said the book presentation was about “giving honour to whom honour is due”.
He led the staff to sing the popular Christian song, “Count your Blessings”.
He described Adefela as a father, mentor, and an icon, who contributed to what he had become.
Ponle said that Adefela was highly disciplined, and in spite of his rich knowledge, very humble.
He recalled Adefela’s stay in NAN when he (Adefela) stood for excellence and tolerated nothing less from members of staff.
“He meant well for us, he has always been our mentor,” he said.
The managing director thanked him for donating 50 books to his fellow retirees.
He said that the book, written by an 85-year-old man, had challenged him to also write a book.
The book reviewer, Mr Segun Adeyemi, was represented by a retired staff, Dr Kingsley Kubeyinje, who joined NAN in 1984.
Adeyemi is a former New York Correspondent, NAN, and former Special Adviser to the immediate-past Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
He said the book captured the reality of the life of the reputable journalist and academician.
He said that 22 of the pages were dedicated to his times in NAN, adding that, it also captured his early adventurous childhood which had many turns and twists.
He said it captured the “life story of a boy who was born in Lagos, grew up partly in Igbara-Oke and Ile-Ife, went to school in both, as well as in Ibadan and the United States, and then became a world citizen, a renowned Journalist, a global Consultant and a University Teacher who has visited 40 countries in three continents!
“What many readers, especially from the NAN family, will look forward to in the memoir is his notes on the time he spent in the agency, especially because he was the very first journalist to be employed in NAN, and the agency’s pioneer Editor-in-Chief who largely charted its editorial pathway.
“Only 22 of the 274 pages in the book were dedicated to the eight years he spent in NAN, but so much was packed into those pages that I do not think he left much untouched.
“Find out why the story of NAN will be incomplete without this man,” he said.
Also, a former editor-in-chief, Mr Isaac Ighure and others took turns to relish exciting moments.
Ighure said he met “an organised and sweet NAN to work in” because Adefela laid the right foundation.
“We were breaking the news and the others were following us,” Ighure said.
He recommended the book for those seeking growth and better understanding. (NAN)

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has said that Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) has yet to give a directive on the new electricity tariff earlier scheduled to commence on July 1.

The Public Relations Officer of IBEDC, Ms Busolami Tunwase, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Saturday.

She said: “I am not aware that NERC has given us any such directive. It is the commission that does the whole thing and I am not sure it has given such a directive.

“But, any moment we get the directive to that effect, we will announce it and it will commence based on instructions from NERC,” Tunwase said.

NAN recalls that condemnation had greeted the proposed new tariff since the news hit the airwave, with stakeholders arguing that the timing of the increment was wrong, given the poor service delivery of most of the electricity distribution companies.

NAN also observed that IBEDC offices were besieged by lots of customers seeking to buy energy ahead of the commencement of the new tariff.

The customers were, however, disappointed, as they could not purchase the energy due to complaints of congestion and network hitches by the company. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Bago, who stated this while addressing newsman shortly after inspecting the tents for Niger State pilgrims tent.

He threatened to report the matter to President Bola Tinubu for necessary action.

The governor also lamented the sanitary condition of the tents, saying that the facilities at Niger State tents fall below standard.

He emphasised the need for the decentralisation of certain hajj responsibilities from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), the Hajj management body in Nigeria.

” First and foremost, I want to express our dismay as a state for the kind of ill-treatment our pilgrims got. The tent is over populated and very filthy.

” The facilities here are not enough you can see people lying down outside which is not good enough.
Secondly, we need to take this issue up with NAHCON.

” As as state we are going to take over certain responsibilities from NAHCON and we are going to meet President Tinubu on this issue.

“For instance, Niger pilgrims cimplained that the food they are given is unsuitable to ingest

”This is not human, it is inhuman. This is not ok for us and we are not going to accept it.

On his part, the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Dantoro and Ameer Hajj Niger State 2023 said Niger state pilgrims paid for conducive tents, good food but unfortunately they did not get what they paid for.

”We will write our report on this. You can even see where I’m staying as an Ameer Hajj very close to the toilet.

”Take it from me and the entire pilgrims. It is a disgusting situation and unfortunately there is nothing to write home about.

He further stated that there has been a standing rule that only satisfactory services provided would be charged and paid for, while refunds were made for those poorly handled.

Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has advised Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice and extend love for one another irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliations.

Mohammed, who is one of the 95,000 Nigerian pilgrims currently performing Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Muna, Makkah, on Thursday.

The governor emphasised the need for Nigerian pilgrims to use the opportunity of this year’s pilgrimage to pray for the country to overcome security and economic challenges confronting the nation.

“So we need to pray for our leaders, pray for unity and guidance, especially for all our new and old leaders. We should pray for development, peace, and unity, we should pray against insecurity and of course bad governance.

“We should be ready to sacrifice and extend love for one another in respective of tribe, religion and political association. We must always remember that we are all one as humanity.

“You see the beauty and the commonality. Hajj is so excellent that it has shown the universality of mankind. And so my message is that we should tolerate one another and love each other.

“We should wish the best for each one of us so that together we can build a nation that will be the pride of everybody. We should pray for each other and pray for our leaders, and for the entire country,” he urged.

Besides, the governor called on leaders at all levels to shun greediness and promote good governance.

Mohammed said: “Some of us that have been given leadership, definitely have our shortcomings, limitations and our inadequacies. Some of our shortcomings are bothered by greediness. May God make us overcome all these challenges and limitations.

“May we have security, and may our economy be good so that we can take care of the vulnerable and the disadvantaged, the teeming youths and women that are looking for self-actualisation.

“Of course, is a new beginning and Nigeria needs a lot of prayers, African continent requires prayer, we need to see beyond our country. Because there is a lot of hope on Nigeria and we cannot afford to disappoint.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
