The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), says it has so far enrolled more than 2.3 million persons in Kano State since inception of the programme in 2007.

The Coordinator of NIMC in the state, Mr Illo Sarkin-Yamma, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Kano.

He said that following the Federal Government’s directive that Nigerians should link their National Identification Number (NIN) with their SIM cards, the Commission had designated 52 centres for registration.

According to him, the aim is to fast track the enrolment of eligible Nigerians in the 44 local government areas of the state.

The coordinator said the centres had been equipped with modern gadgets designed to ease congestion and hasten the enrolment process.

According to him, the exercise is being conducted smoothly in compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols in all the centres across the state.

“There is rush by enrollees at the centres following directive by the Federal Government for Nigerians to link their NIN with their SIMs.

“Each of the 52 centres is currently enrolling between 100 and 200 persons daily. We have upgraded our services to enable more people to get enrolled.

“We make arrangements for the enrolees to come on a certain day for the exercise to reduce congestion,’’ he said.

Sarkin-Yamma said the Federal Government had approved about 203 private firms to facilitate smooth running of the enrolment process in the country.

While commending the Kano State Government for its support to the Commission, the director added that enrolment was free, warning residents to be wary of fraudsters.

Also speaking, Lawal Yahaya, the NICM Regional Director, said the Commission had adopted proactive measures to enhance access to its services across the country.

Yahaya advised Nigerians to adhere to guidelines set out by the Commission on enrolment to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise. (NAN)

The Federal Government on Wednesday disbursed the sum of N52 million  to 2,600 vulnerable rural women in Nasarawa State to uplift their socio-economic status.

Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq,  Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, while flagging off the Special Cash Grant for rural women in Lafia, said each beneficiary was entitled to N20,000.

Represented by the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mohammed Hassan-Abdullahi, Umar-Farouq, said the programme was designed to provide a one-off grant to some of the poorest and most vulnerable women in rural Nigeria.

“The Special Cash Grant for rural women programme being flagged off today was introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, as part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s social inclusion and poverty reduction agenda,” she said.

She added that the programme was also geared towards the realisation of the national aspiration of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 year.

The minister said that over 150,000 rural women across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would benefit from the grant aimed at increasing access to financial capital required for economic activities.

“Since the inception of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2015, the government has paid more attention to protecting and promoting the plight of the poor and vulnerable in the country.

“This informed the decision to initiate the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), a strategy for enhancing social inclusion and protection of the most vulnerable segments of our society.

“Nasarawa state has received a total sum of N3, 122, 740, 000 from the Federal Government Conditional Transfer Programme from inception, impacting the lives of 48, 687 poor and vulnerable households in five Local Government Areas in the state.

“They are Lafia, Wamba, Akwanga, Kokona and Nassarawa Local Government Areas,’’ she said.

Umar-Farouq urged the beneficiaries to ensure judicious use of the funds to better their standard of living.

Also speaking, Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State lauded the federal government for initiating the programme towards changing the lives of the vulnerable women positively.

Sule, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Emmanuel Akabe also restated the state government’s determination to key into peoples’ oriented programme in order to boost development across the state.

Earlier, Hajiya Halima Jabiru, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, said the state was lucky to witness yet another show of benevolence by the federal government.

She added that the gesture would ameliorate the plight of citizens, particularly the vulnerable rural women.

Some beneficiaries of the grant, Mrs Ladi Ambrose and Mrs Azumi Yusuf, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), lauded the federal government for the gesture, promising to ensure judicious use of the fund. (NAN)

FCT VIO arrests 50 dispatcher drivers

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has arrested over 50 dispatch riders for various traffic offences within the city centre.

Alhaji Wadata Bodinga, Director, FCTA Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) made the disclosure while briefing newsmen shortly after conducting them round the seized motorcycles on Wednesday in Abuja.

Bodinga warned that the conduct and activities of dispatch riders in the city would no longer be tolerated by the FCTA and the motoring public.

He disclosed that the directorate had received a lot of complaints about the conduct of some of the dispatch motorcyclists within the city and “we have seen it too.

“We are here to parade the dispatch riders that we arrested for either riding against traffic in the city or beating the traffic lights.

“As you may observe, the number of dispatch riders has increased within the city, probably because of the COVID-19 pandemic, ravaging not only Abuja or Nigeria but the whole world.

“Because of their door-to-door services, dispatch riders can actually help with errands of people that are staying at home to deliver some of their needs.

“Just between Tuesday and today Wednesday, over 50 motorcycles and dispatch riders have been arrested for various offences.

“They are the major culprit of this beating of traffic and riding against traffic in the city which is not acceptable,” Bodinga said.

He said that the FCTA had directed all the people arrested to go for emotional evaluation at a recognised hospital in the FCT.

The director said that the enforcement was a continuous one, adding that all the Area Commands were detailed to ensure that traffic rules and regulations is respected in the city.

“This is Abuja and even where the traffic lights are not working, our men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force are there to ensure sanity.

“People should be seen to, at least, obey the traffic lights in the territory and sadly, that is not the case when it comes to this dispatch riders as you can see the results of the operation,” he said.

Bodinga disclosed that majority of them were not registered with the authority as dispatch riders.

“Because they are dispatch riders, we expect that these motorcycles should be owned by cooperate organisations but from the records, we have realised that most of them are just owned by individuals who just decided to put the box and start operation.

” And they will bring results first. After they have done that, then we are going to take them to the Mobile Magistrate Court which has already started sitting.

”After the magistrate session is over, then they will equally come for two weeks compulsory training with a formal letter from their various companies and organisations.

“For all the ones that have organisations, we have drafted a formal letter that we are going to send to their various companies and organisations, informing them of the conduct of their drivers.

”And also, the need for them to bring even their other drivers for mandatory training to update them on traffic rules and regulations,” he said.

He, however, said that the training was free but they would pay for their various penalties.

Bodinga said that after the training, the Transportation Secretariat would issue them Abuja Riders Permit that would limit them to only the areas that motorcycles were allowed to operate.

On his part, Mr Ihkaro Attah, the Chairman, FCTA Ministerial Taskforce on Traffic Management, said dispatch riders who were allowed to operate in the city were already abusing the privilege.

” They break traffic laws very regularly and it has become a source of worry to the FCT Minister. Mr Bodinga and his men swung into action and clamped down on them.

”We give the directorate pass mark for clamping down on these violators and some vehicles here are also involved.

”They will be going through psychiatric tests to ascertain if they are normal because if something is not wrong with them they must be wrong with something,” he added.

Fenerbahce agree in principle to sign Ozil from Arsenal

Fenerbahce will sign German midfielder, Mesut Ozil from Arsenal for three and a half years for an undisclosed fee, according to media report in Turkey on Wednesday.

The report says Ozil and the club have agreed on the transfer in principle and the 32-year-old would join the former Turkish champions later in January.

Fenerbahce Chairman, Ali Koc, said previously that signing Ozil, who has Turkish ancestry, was a “nice dream” for the club, who have suffered from financial woes in recent years.

Koc had said Fenerbahce would need to offload players to make any transfers in January.

Ozil fuelled rumours about a move to Fenerbahce with an Instagram post about Istanbul on Tuesday.

The German has not played for Arsenal since March 2020 and was not named in the squad list for the first half of the current Premier League season.

He has long been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, Turkey’s second most decorated club.

Ozil, who is one of the highest-paid players at Arsenal, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Arsenal FC is looking to offload players in January to trim the squad.

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, had said last week the club would wait for the January transfer window to make a final call about Ozil.

Arsenal are currently 11th in the standings on 23 points, while Fenerbahce are fifth in Turkey’s top tier Super Lig on 29 points, two behind league leaders Gaziantep. (Reuters/NAN)

Electricity consumer groups oppose minor tariff adjustment

By Solomon Asowata

Electricity consumer groups on  Wednesday kicked against the minor adjustment in electricity tariffs approved for the 11 electricity distribution companies by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The groups, the Energy Consumer Rights and Responsibilities Initiative (ECRRI) and All Electricity Consumers Protection Forum (AECPF),  described the increment in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NERC had approved the minor adjustment in tariffs for electricity users effective Jan. 1.

”The Commission hereby states unequivocally that NO approval has been granted for a 50% tariff increase in the Tariff Order for electricity distribution companies which took effect on Jan. 1, 2021.

“On the contrary, the tariffs for customers on service bands D & E (customers being served less than an average of 12hrs of supply per day over a period of one month) remains frozen and subsidised in line with the policy direction of the Federal Government.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPRSA) and the nation’s tariff methodology for biannual minor review, the rates for service bonds A, B, C, D and E have been adjusted by NGN2.00 to NGN4.00 per kWhr to reflect the partial impact of inflation and movement in foreign exchange rates,” NERC had said in a statement on Tuesday.

Reacting, Mr Adeola Samuel-Ilori, National Coordinator, AECPF, said the adjustment was illegal, unjust and unfair to electricity consumers in the country.

According to him, the minor adjustment which is coming after NERC increased tariffs on Sept. 1, 2020, violates the provisions of Sections 32, 63 and 72 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA), 2005.

He said the Act provides that any minor tariff adjustment should be done after a period of six months,  stressing that the review was therefore an illegality.

“The DisCos didn’t fulfil the condition precedent to the increase in the Sept. 1, 2020 tariff in the first place.

“Such condition precedent can be found in Section 76(2)(b) and (7) of EPSRA 2005 which includes wide consultation with stakeholders and noticeable efficiency.

“The other issues have to do with  metering and directive on capping which repealed estimated billing methodology in order 197/2020 which is still subsisting.

“Our position is that we are examining the situation because it is a legal issue and we may need to go to court for interpretation if they go ahead with the adjustment,” Samuel-Ilori said.

Also,  Mr Sural Fadairo, National President, ECRRI, said the minor adjustment was not necessary at this point in time.

“NERC has a duty to protect electricity consumers from exploitation but what we are seeing now is clearly the opposite, with adjustment in tariffs within a very short period.

“We are therefore calling on the National Assembly to urgently intervene and halt this minor review for now,” Fadairo said. (NAN)

“China firmly supports Africa’s fight against COVID-19, when China was hit by the coronavirus, we received firm support from our African brothers and such support we always cherish.

“On our part, China has contributed supplies to 53 African countries and the African Union, for some of them, this has helped met their immediate needs.

“China remains a developing country, China’s cooperation with Nigeria is South South cooperation. What makes this different from North South Cooperation is that the former is all about mutual help and support between friends,” he said.
