2023 Hajj: CSO commends airlines over patriotism, cooperation

By Salisu Sani-Idris

Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has commended the Nigerian airlines engaged by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for 2023 Hajj, for their patriotism and cooperation toward the success of the ongoing exercise.

National Coordinator of the organisation, Malam Ibrahim Muhammed, made the commendation in a statement on Saturday in Makkah.

Mohammed disclosed that based on the agreement reached with the airlines, NAHCON was expected to pay at least 50 per cent of the total fare before the commencement of the journey to the Holy land, but failed to do so due to some exigencies.

he, however, explained that the airlines provided full services without NAHCON meeting the terms of agreement.

“We are aware that after receiving all deposits from across the states, the Federal Capital Territopry (FCT) and the armed forces, NAHCON had gone ahead to deposit these monies into its accounts at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)

“The normal practice is for the apex bank to provide the dollar equivalent of monies deposited based on the approved official rates for disbursement by NAHCON to meet its obligations.

“But it is gratifying to note that after receiving assurances of payment whenever the dollars is made available, the airlines have gone ahead to not just offer full services, but they are so far doing a wonderful job.

” Over 50,000 pilgrims have so far been transported to Saudi Arabia by the airlines. We commend them for being patriotic,”he said

The coordinator urged NAHCON officials to ensure that proper arrangements were done toward the smooth take off of the second batch of pilgrims that would be airlifted after the hajj rites were performed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NAHCON had engaged seven airlines including; Max Air, Azman, Air Peace, Aero Contractors, Ari Air, Value Jet and Saudi based Flynas, to convey Nigerians pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2023 Hajj.(NAN)

D-G urges access to learning, written materials for the blind

D-G urges access to learning, written materials for the blind

Mr James Lalu Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities and other executive of NAB at the pening of a three-day National Convention of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, in Abuja

Mr James Asein, Director-General, Nigerian Copy Right Commission, has called on States to domesticate the Marrakesh Treaty to provide access to learning and written materials for the blind in the country.

Asein made the call on Friday in Abuja at the opening of a three-day National Convention of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB).

The director-general said that Nigeria began the domestication of the Marrakesh Treaty with the signing into law of the Copyright Act on March 17, 2023, and urged the 36 states and FCT to follow suit.

“It is expected that with domestication of the copyright law by the government of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the interest of the blind and vulnerable in the society will be adequately protected.

“It is to provide the blind and visually impaired persons with access to learning and written materials.

“It is an attempt by the international community to end book farming because it is understood that less than 10% of the books and reading materials available in any library are accessible to the blind.

“So it means that for every school you go to where you have 100 books in the library, maybe only one book will be accessible and in some cases no book is available for the blind to read”, he said.

The D-G said that the new Copyright Act has allowed cross border exchange of materials, such that books that were accessible in other countries could be easily brought to Nigeria at reduced cost.

Asein said the commission had agreed with the blind community to set a day annually as the National Accessibility Day.

“In this case we have agreed to have October 4, as the day to throw more light on the challenges facing the blind community and how we can do better in making more materials available for blind students in various institutions,” he added.

In his remarks, the National President of NAB, Mr Ishaqu Gombe explained that the convention was to take stock of the activities and programmes of the various state chapters, including the FCT.

“We check on achievements recorded so far and if need be address crucial matters as it affects members,” the president said.

According to him, with a new government in place, it is important for members of the association to brainstorm and present its agenda to states and Federal Government for implementation.

“We believe it will help to give blind persons access to learning aids to improve their learning skills,” Gombe added.

He also said that the association will elect new national officers during the convention.

Mr James Lalu, Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, urged government to remember the disability community when considering people for palliative, and appointments to various offices.

He expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu will carry the blind community in Nigeria along in all activities of government. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

African Child Day: SCI advocates safe, accessible digital environment for children

African Child Day: SCI advocates safe, accessible digital environment for children

By Angela Atabo

Save the Children International (SCI), an international Non-Governmental Organisation, on Friday advocated a safe and accessible digital environment for children to acquire quality education.

Its Director, Advocacy, Campaign, Communication and Media, Mr Amanuel Mamo, made the call in Abuja, at an event to commemorate the 2023 International Day of the African Child.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event with the theme,” The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment”, was organised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.

According to him, the theme reminds stakeholders and duty bearers to be accountable to progress being made in adopting policies to protect children.

He called on stakeholders to reflect on what needed to be done to effectively promote the right of children in accessing quality and safe access to e-learning platforms.

Mamo noted that access to quality education and safety of the learning environment had remained a challenge, with children still demanding for their rights to be fully protected and respected.

According to him, digital technologies play a critical role in boosting access to quality education, adding however, that children should be safe while learning online.

He reiterated SCI’s call for the formulation and implementation of a law to tackle violations of children’s rights online.

This, he said, could be achieve through the adoption and domestication of the African Union Convention on Cybersecurity and Personal Data also known as the Malabo Convention.

He added that the legal framework should also include other international instruments, particularly ECOWAS Directive on Fighting Cybercrime, which provides for offences related to child pornography.

“There is also the need to strengthen appropriate regulatory frameworks to hold businesses accountable when found to have participated in online sexual abuse and exploitation.

“Training of personnel of law enforcement agencies and the judiciary was equally crucial.

“This will empower them to effectively address concerns around child protection online,” he said.

He reIterated SCI’s call for the participation of children in decision-making processes, using child-friendly digital technologies, in line with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

He stressed the need for caregivers and teachers to be sufficiently equipped, to assist children navigate the digital environment safely.

Ms Gumut Nankiling, Advocacy, Campaigns and Policy Manager, SCI, also harped on the need to safeguard children while accessing online platforms.

According to her, the discourse on the rights of a child in the digital environment will not be complete without the safety and security of children in that sphere.

“The ills of the digital space dance right in front of us. According to UNICEF, one in three internet users globally are internet abusers.

“This shows that most children are at risk of being exposed to obscene content, cyber bullying, discrimination, hate, violent materials, and impostors for sexual exploitation.

“Therefore, children must be equipped with tools to protect themselves through digital literacy and sensitisation on their rights and safety in the digital space,” she said.

On her part, Ms Unyedikachi Uzodinma, Director of Communications, Women in ICT Foundation, called for the prohibition of the display of explicit content and violations of children online.

According to her, a primary consideration should be placed on protecting the interest of the child in the design of regulations to overcome digital exclusion. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Olayinka Olawale
The Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic, district 9110, on Thursday donated 10 toilet facilities to Tinubu Methodist Primary School, Igbosere, Lagos Island, through a global grant project.

The club also donated water supply and perimeter fencing phase I, to the Nigeria Police, Bar Beach Police Barack, Victoria Island.

Speaking at the inauguration in Lagos, Mrs Omotunde Lawson, District Governor, Rotary International 9110, said the project was sponsored under the Global Grant Water, Sanitation and Hygiene “WASH PROJECT”.

Lawson said the project was executed through a tripeptide funding from Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic, district 9110 and international partner.

According to her, 15 schools benefited from the global grant of which Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic is one.

She noted that Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic was instrumental to bringing and ensuring that the school was a beneficiary of a global grant project.

She further said that the project was part of the 2022 rotary year which was not executed because the grant was not released during the tenure.

Lawson said that the project also included beautification of the facility with flower beds, distribution of hygienic items for the pupils and teachers as well as planting of coconut seedlings.

”The project that we are inaugurating today is initiated by the immediate past president of Eko Atlantic club during her tenure from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.

“I want to congratulate the pioneer beneficiaries of this project because they will use it and leave and many generation of pupils will also use the same facility.

“We are here today to inaugurate a global grant project that Eko Atlantic is instrumental to you being a beneficiary of a global grant project.

“A project like this means that the club will put down money, the district where the club belong to, district 9110 will add some money and also seek international partners outside the country to support a project,” she said.

The district governor said that without a foreign partner, a person could not be part of the global grant project because they too should contribute to that project.

“If Rotary wants to do something big, it will source for partners beyond this country and that is when you can now get enough grant that you can add to your own funds, known as counterpart funding.

“You will now get bigger funds that you can use for a project that is more than $30,000.

“This school is not the only beneficiary of this project, 15 of such schools will benefit from the 2022 rotary year. Though it started last rotary year but the funds came in the 2023,” she explained.

Lawson urged the head teacher of the school to ensure that the facility was properly maintained at all times.

Mr Gboyega Bada, the President, Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic, said the project was an intervention worth executing because of the immediate impact on the pupils.

Bada added that the project was an opportunity to provide service especially for the young ones.

He noted that the former facility used by the pupils was an eyesore and not befitting of a school.

“If you see the former convenience used by the pupils and teachers of the school, you will be amazed.

“I thank God and I thank Rotary Club for coming to the rescue.

“This project is an intervention that is worth doing and am sure that is why our district governor is hear today to see for herself,” he said.

Bada, who’s tenure would end on June 30, commended the district governor for giving them the opportunity to serve.

I thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve. As we are rounding off our tenure, we are rounding off good.

“Since July 2022, Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic have been inaugurating one project or the other. We want to believe that impacting on people’s live is more of rotary.

“It is not just going to build a toilet, we have also done beautification of the environment as well as plant coconut trees within the school compound,” he said.

Mrs Sadiat Sanusi, the Head teacher, commended the club for providing and improving the sanitary condition in the school.

She gave the assurance that the school would make judicious use of the facility.

At the Bar Beach Police State, Bada handed over the borehole facility to the Divosional Police Officer, SP Onyinye Onwuamaegbu.

Onwuamaegbu lauded the club for its support toward improving the standard of the station.

She said that since the water treatment project was executed, it had improved sanitary condition in the station.

She appealed to the club for more support in order to excel during her tenure in the station and improve security.

The Project Chairman, Mr Makanjuola Famoroti, said that the toilet was in a very bad state when the club visited the school from inception.

Famoroti said this compelled them to adopt the school because the club saw broken toilet seat and felt they were dangerous to pupils as well as members of the teaching staff.

“We demolished part of the former facility and constructed 10 new modern facilities for the benefit of the school,” he said.

Famoroti urged the pupils to make judicious use of the facility and ensure that it was kept clean at all times.

“Don’t turn this facility into a dumping ground, we have built if for you to make schooling conducive,” he said.
