Tinubu has good intentions for Nigeria, says General Overseer

By Kingsley Okoye

Rev. Unuefe Ikhiuwu, the General Overseer, Christ’s Chosen Church of God International (CCCG), has urged Nigerians, especially Christians, to give the country’s President, Bola Tinubu, the needed support to succeed.

Ikhiuwu said this in Abuja on Thursday during an assessment tour of ongoing Church projects in different divisions under Abuja zone.

He said that Tinubu had good intentions for the country and should be supported to take the country to the next level.

“We hope for a better Nigeria, by God’s grace.

“In fact, there is no leader without a good intention but what I think is wrong with us is advisers.

“I pray that Tinubu will listen to the voice of God and hear the yearnings of the people to make Nigeria better than what it is.

“I hear him say renewed hope, and I say it should be so indeed to this country; Christians should be law abiding and support the government of the day.

“The Bible says ‘let every soul be subject to the high powers, be it in the Church, government or wherever they are.

“All Christians should support the government of the day and be loyal to dedicated authorities,” he said.

He urged Christians to remain steadfast and not to compromise their faith and love for God no matter the challenge or difficulty, as they would be rewarded with a “crown of life” at the end.

The General Overseer, while commending the Pastors and members of the Church for the developmental stride recorded, said he had so far visited about 30 branches of the Church for on-the-spot assessment of projects.

“My coming is to spur the Pastors and members to more action,” he added.

Rev. Godspower Ogheneovo, Resident Pastor, Lugbe branch, CCCG, said they would continue to propagate the gospel so as to rid the society of evil.

He commended the General Overseer for his visit and called for assistance of the headquarter Church to complete various projects which the branch had embarked upon. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Alternative to petrol: Centre advocates use of compressed natural gas

Alternative to petrol: Centre advocates use of compressed natural gas

By Jacinta Nwachukwu

An NGO, the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), says that the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), as an alternative to petrol by the Federal Government is a welcome development considering the price difference.

Mr Shittu Jubril, the Chief Executive Officer, PPDC, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Compressed Natural Gas is the cleanest burning fuel operating today and brings about less vehicle maintenance and longer engine life.

Jubril said why CNG could be a good substitute was because the cost might be N100 for the equivalent of a liter of fuel as at the time fuel was costing about N250.

“If we are talking about inflation, we are talking about a cost of not more than N170 compared to N500 now depending on where you are in Nigeria,” he said.

Jubril commended the Federal Government for the efforts so far and called for faster implementation of the alternatives to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on the citizens.

He said that the government should make credit facilities with long term repayment rates available for the citizens to access, provide alternative transport mechanisms, health care and address the cost point.

“We are talking about 130 million Nigerians living below the poverty line globally; this is something we should ensure we are considering while making these decisions.

“We are talking about increasing the minimum wage but we are not also looking at what is the average cost point for the average Nigerian.

“The average Nigerian is facing inflation of almost 24 per cent; he is facing a consumer pricing index of almost 25 per cent, and food prices are set to increase,” Jubril said.

He added that the average Nigerian also spent N7 out of every N10 or pocket expense for health care.

“When you consider other countries, for instance Egypt; Egypt was only able to convert 50,000 to 75,000 of their vehicles per year to be using compressed natural gas, Nigeria has 1.5 million vehicles,” Jubril said.

He explained that Nigeria had already set up the infrastructure through the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company and some gas stations that were already producing gas.

“But for conversion, there is a question of how would the average Nigerian be able to afford it?

“However, it is good to see that there has been some progress made.

“I could see that there has been a committee set up to look at how to ensure that the fuel subsidy that is being removed is used for some of the critical areas of the economy,” Jubril said.

He stated that there was a need to cut down on the very expensive cost of governance.

“We need to ensure that the commitments are evenly balanced between the citizens and the Federal Government.

“It is a good direction that we are headed in because we all agreed that the subsidy needs to go but also what of other subsidies, the import subsidy also needs to go.

“We need to ensure that access to credit facilities for the average Nigerian is made available so that we can engage in businesses and reset the economy so as to grow as a country,” Jubril said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CSOs float platform to deepen legislative engagement, accountability in Kaduna

CSOs float platform to deepen legislative engagement, accountability in Kaduna

By Philip Yatai

Some members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and development partners, have established a platform, tagged “Civil Society-Legislature Engagement and Accountability Platform (CLEAP)”, to deepen legislative engagement and accountability in Kaduna State.

A founding member, Mr Yusuf Goje of the Coalition of Association for Leadership, Peace, Empowerment and Development (CALPED), made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Kaduna.

Goje described CLEAP as a “multi-stakeholder platform of civil society and legislators, championing reform initiatives for a more open, transparent, accountable, and responsive Kaduna State House of Assembly”.

He explained that the platform drew inspiration from the Memorandum on Parliamentary Engagement adopted by the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Steering Committee in 2021.

According to him, the platform seeks to promote OGP principles and practices in the legislative processes, to enable more openness and effective citizens’ participation and engagement.

Goje added that the CLEAP would serve as a platform for dialogue and partnership between the legislature and civil society for effective horizontal and diagonal accountability.

He stressed that the platform would increase interaction between legislators and constituents to strengthen the legislative process and deepen the culture of open governance through law-making, oversight and evaluation.

“This is crucial because, the legislative arm of government is at the heart of democracy being the institution of government that gives meaning to the government of the people, by the people and for the people.

“It is also worthy of note that good governance can only be actualised when we have an effective legislature.

“To have an effective legislature, it must be open, transparent, accountable, responsible, and responsive to citizens’ engagement.

“This will build trust and collaboration between the legislature and civil society, thereby strengthening horizontal, diagonal, and vertical accountability,” he added.

Goje said that CLEAP would be working with stakeholders within and outside the Kaduna State House of Assembly, to champion reforms that would promote a culture of legislative transparency and accountability.

This, according to him, will serve as a permanent dialogue mechanism for joint action together with CSOs.

He further explained that CLEAP would be supported by Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL), a governance programme of the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Meanwhile, PERL’s State Lead Facilitator, Mr Abel Adejor, had explained that in the next one year, the governance programme would be supporting the state government and citizens to consolidate the gains of OGP recorded so far in the state.

Adejor identified the key priority areas of support as budget engagement, transition management, legislative engagement, audit, local governance, OGP and mutual accountability framework.

NAN reports that OGP is a multilateral initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from national and sub-national governments.

The commitments are designed to promote open government, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.

In OGP, governments work with CSOs to create action plans with concrete reforms; a model that ensure citizens play a role in shaping and overseeing government reforms and programmes. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NGO assisted 420 indigent pre-trial detainees, empowers 102 female inmates in 5 years

NGO assisted 420 indigent pre-trial detainees, empowers 102 female inmates in 5 years

By Ruth Oketunde

Hope Behind Bars Africa (HBBA), a non-profit organisation, says it has provided legal representation to no fewer than 420 indigent pre-trial detainees in the last five years.

Ms Funke Adeoye, Executive Director of the organisation, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the activities of the organisation, on Wednesday in Abuja.

She said that the organisation had also empowered no fewer than 102 female inmates with vocational and life skills to help them earn money while in prison.

She added that to reduce prison congestion and activate criminal justice reforms in the country, the organisation had also supported over 7,000 indigent persons with diverse interventions.

According to her, Nigeria’s prison population was 76,982, as at May 30 and the inmates awaiting trial constitute about 69.3 per cent of the prison population, which must be reduced.

Adeoye said that the figure is the highest percentage of awaiting-trial prisoners in Africa, according to the World Prison Brief’s report, which puts the figure at 12.4 per cent for Ghana and 32.9 per cent for South Africa.

The executive-director added that it would continue to advance access to justice using a multi-pronged approach.

“We started out directly representing inmates for free here in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and expanded to Kano and Edo states.

“Currently, we have a network of lawyers in Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Edo, Kano and FCT. We have represented 420 indigent pre-trial detainees so far.

“About 40 per cent of this number were charged with simple offences, 20 per cent for misdemeanors, and the rest for felonies, capital crimes and fundamental human rights actions.

“About 80 per cent of these cases were taken from inmates during visits to the custodial centres, while 20 per cent were based on referral and at the police stage.

According to her, the results from these cases ranged from convictions, discharges for lack of diligent prosecution, successful no-case submissions, withdrawals of complaints and acquittals.

“In all these results, our main goal is to provide adequate legal representation and to make sure that the rights of indigent pre-trial detainees are not prejudiced.

“Evidently, with the cases we handled, we cut the time that would otherwise be spent awaiting trial by at least 50 per cent and saved taxpayers money that would have been spent on wrongful incarceration,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured the unveiling of the 5-year Impact Report/Strategic Plan of the NGO.(NAN)(www.nannees.ng)

Experts task young directors on mentorship, diversity

Experts task young directors on mentorship, diversity

By Rukayat Moisemhe

Experts have emphasised the need for young directors to adopt diversity, mentorship and inclusion as innovative strategies to drive organisational sustainability in Nigeria.

They spoke at the Institute of Directors (IoD) Young Directors Forum and Appreciation Cocktail with the theme: “Inclusion: A Pathway to Organisational Sustainability,” on Tuesday in Lagos.

Mrs Naomi Nwokolo, the Executive Director, United Nations Global Compact Network, Nigeria, said it was important for young directors to align with and embrace the interplay between diversity and inclusion to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Nwokolo said the network’s recent survey showed participant’s resolve to preserve and protect diversity and inclusion was clear with 92 per cent of companies surveyed revealing ongoing diversity and inclusion initiatives.

She charged leaders to be catalysts of change by embracing inclusive leadership.

Nwokolo said that this would foster trust and empower teams, resulting in higher levels of employee engagement and satisfaction.

The director quoted a study by Catalyst (2020), which found that companies with a higher representation of women in executive positions experienced a 53 per cent higher return on equity.

Nwokolo also said that organisations that implement inclusive practices and policies such as flexibility, mentorship, diversity training, and inclusive recruitment created an environment where all employees could thrive.

“There are numerous positive impacts of inclusive policies within organisations which extend beyond the realms of financial performance, innovation, customer satisfaction, and employee engagement, further emphasising the strategic value of inclusion.

“For companies ready to go from talking the talk to walking the walk, they must set targets for women on boards and senior management and then choose timelines for meeting those goals.

“Businesses must also build capacity to accelerate gender equality as women’s business leadership is linked to better Environmental, Sustainability and Governance performance.

“This includes reduced greenhouse gas emissions, stronger worker relations and reduced incidence of fraud, insider trading, and other unethical practices,” she said.

Also, Dr Ije Jidenma, the President, IoD, emphasised the importance of sustainability, saying it centred on futuristic potential, giving back to society and putting in place governance structures that engendered organisational success.

Jidenma charged directors to continue to sharpen their mindset, knowledge and skills to deliver on organisational goals and objectives.

She stated that the IoD created the young directors forum to serve as a network for talented and upcoming board leaders serving in firms across the economy to make them more versatile and competent through well thought out programs and event.

“We are proud to give back to society and this forum provides the opportunity to ensure young directors are well equipped to face the challenges of the future.

“Research shows that one of five start-ups tend to collapse within the first five years due to inadequate power supply, seed money and other challenges.

“In fairness, I laud Nigerian businesses for being untiring, strong and resilience in this environment.

“They must, however, leverage technology, blockchain, artificial intelligence and the institute’s platform to network and adopt regulatory and good governance practices,” she said.

Similarly, Dr Grant Akata, Chairman, Director Development Committee, IoD, said that the case for innovative strategies included backing up businesses with robust practices hinged on transparent leadership tend to post superior results.

Akata noted that while the current business environment was fraught with risks occasioned by flip-flop policy regime, survival and growth of organisations demanded innovation and prompt adaptation.

The chairman stated that besides robust training offerings, mentoring and coaching were some other areas where the institute could positively impact members competence by and large corporate Nigeria.

He tasked the institute to use the pool member-directors to drive the development of upcoming directors by equipping and building their confidence for their roles.

“The institute must foster amongst young directors a culture of best governance practices, help them focus on their succession plans and encourage them to experiment with and deploy innovative strategies.

“Directors, in particular chief executives, have the responsibility to balance competing priorities and provide insights for organisation sustainability and performance,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
