The National Population Commission (NPC) says it will embark on Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercise in Ifelodun and Moro Local Government Areas of Kwara on Feb. 4.

The commission’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Ganiyat Lawal, disclosed this on Wednesday in Ilorin while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Lawal said that the EAD was a preparatory activity before the actual census enumeration, pointing out that it should not be equated with the census.

She said that the same set of people that did the last enumeration exercise would be used, but few changes had been made.

“We did two days refresher training for the workers and few people were removed and replaced by more qualified workers,” she said.

The spokesperson said that 28 days had been earmarked for the exercise that would commence on  Feb. 4 and end on March 3.

She said that the commission held a meeting with the traditional rulers of the two communities, including relevant stakeholders.

“We urged them to enlighten the people of the areas on the importance of the exercise.

“NPC Federal Commissioner, Alhaji Rasaq Gidado,  spoke to them and they gave an assurance to be cooperative and supportive,” Lawal said.

She said that all necessary enlightenment had been done through the right channels, to ensure a hitch-free exercise.

NAN reports that similar exercises had taken place in Ekiti, Irepodun and Oke-Ero Local Government Areas of the state on Jan. 20. (NAN)

African finance ministers to discuss industrialisation

The African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development will hold their 33rd session to discuss industrialisation in Africa, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) said on Wednesday.

The Conference will be held virtually from 17-23 March, 2021, under the theme “Africa’s sustainable industrialisation and diversification in the digital era in the context of coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

UN ECA Director of Regional Integration and Trade, Stephen Karingi, said discussions on Africa’s industrialisation are relevant coming on the heels of the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He said the ministers and experts attending the ministerial conference will discuss the need to ensure that digitalization strategies are integrated into policy and planning frameworks for industrialization.

“Industrialisation and digitalisation recognize Africa’s desire to industrialize and create jobs for the millions of its populace, in particular the youth joining the labour market annually,” the ECA said in a statement.

The ECA said the AfCFTA comes in handy during these difficult times where the continent is fighting COVID-19. “It is crucial that our governments establish institutional arrangements for cooperation on the digital economy, and provisions to support digital capacities and industrialization and connect African businesses,” said Mr. Karingi.

The ECA said the coming into force of the AfCFTA signaled a unique turning point in the continent’s pursuit of industrialisation; with e-commerce, a key catalyst in digitalised economies, being a key cornerstone of the pact’s infrastructure.

A main element of this year’s theme is the recognition of the need for African countries to achieve rapid economic growth without exacerbating the environmental cost of development.

It calls for an alignment of development strategies with climate change mitigation measures, recognising that industrialisation while being an effective engine of growth for many developed countries, has come at a severe cost to the global climate.

According to the ECA, African countries will need to implement development strategies that recognise that better, safer and more inclusive growth is one that involves strong climate action and efficient use of natural resources.

The theme also recognises that Africa’s developmental path must minimize the aberration of developed nations and instead seek to embrace modernization through digitalization and less climate-costly industrialization activities.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected Africa’s economy pushing it into contraction, for the first time in more than 20 years, by an estimated 2 to 5.4 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020, it has further highlighted the need for accelerating Africa’s digitalization.

If emerging digitalization can be scaled, it could be transformational, helping Africa to sustainably industrialize and diversify within a global digital economy estimated to be worth more than US$11.5 trillion.

The ECA argues that Africa must embrace environmentally-sustainable industrialization and diversification as a pathway to creating decent jobs for the 170 million African young people set to enter the job market between 2019 and 2030, building forward better from COVID-19 and ensure resilience to future shocks.

Deliberations at the conference will centre on how countries can leverage the rapid technological innovation to foster stronger economic growth and promote sustainability and inclusiveness, against the background of the urgent action that is needed to offset the impact of COVID-19 on Africa’s economies and economic trajectory.

The conference, which will draw seasoned and high-level panellists from within and outside Africa, promises to be very exciting and engaging, with outcome decisions that will have important implications for Africa’s future. (PANA/NAN)

Panel tasks CBN on open banking regulation

Mr Boye Ademola, Partner and Lead, Digital Transformation, KPMG, on Wednesday called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to initiate a policy on open banking in Nigeria to transform the sector.

Ademola made the call during a virtual panel discussion on Open Banking Exchange (OBEx) with the theme, “Open Sesame: Unlocking the Future of Financial Innovation through Domestic third Party Providers.”

The inaugural OBEx conference was organised by Business Day, in partnership with Open Technology Foundation (Open Banking Nigeria), a non-governmental organisation.

Open banking grants access to consumer banking, transaction, and other financial data from banks and non-bank financial institutions through the use of application programming interfaces (APIs).

The banking model allows networking of accounts and data across institutions for use by consumers, financial institutions, and third-party service providers.

Ademola said: “It is important over the next year or thereabouts for the regulator to put out regulation around open banking in Nigeria.

“It is really going to be important if you are looking at the 2030 transformation agenda; how do we break this channel of financial inclusion, how do we attract capital, how do we continue to lead on the continent in financial service?

“I think the Central Bank of Nigeria should lead the conversation. And the minimum we should have is clear guidelines on standardisation, and we should have timelines,” he said.

He urged Nigeria to take a cue from countries like Singapore, UK among others.

The Chief Executive Officer of Trium Limited Mr Adedeji Olowe, said open banking would create a platform that would allow less-fortunate Nigerians have access to good life.

“One thing I will want us to know, especially when it comes to open banking, is for us to see it for the good that it is going to do.

“I do not see it from the fancy fintech stuff, I do not see it from transactions or bragging on Twitter.

“I see it as creating a platform or removing friction that allows less-fortunate Nigerians to have a good life.

“We can allow millions of people in Nigeria to have access to credit and financial services. Doing so will create a better future for young people,” he said. (NAN)

The Israeli Health Ministry has announced that it will open up vaccinations against COVID-19 to everyone aged 16 and above starting from Thursday.

A spokesman for one of the country’s four Health Maintenance Organisations (HMO), Meuhedet, confirmed to dpa on Wednesday that it had received a message from the ministry saying, “In light of a situation assessment conducted with the CEOs yesterday, we will probably open the vaccinations to all ages starting from Thursday.’’

The ministry said in a statement that even though the vaccine appointments would be available to all those eligible, it had instructed HMOs to focus efforts on those above the age of 50, alongside those unable to leave their homes.

The vaccine is currently available to everyone aged 35 and over, as well as to teenagers aged 16 to 18, to enable them to take exams.

In Israel, more than 3.2 million people have received the first dose of the vaccine and almost 1.9 million have also received their second dose too.

Nonetheless, in spite of a nationwide lockdown, daily case numbers remain high.

The ministry said on Wednesday that 7,919 new virus cases were recorded the previous day.

While Israel currently has the highest number of inoculated residents per 100 people, demand for the vaccine had recently fallen, two HMOs told dpa.

Officials have blamed virus mutations for the continuing high infection rate.

However, there have also been major violations of lockdown restrictions, and a failure to enforce the regulations in certain cases.(dpa/NAN)
