Researchers explain how Bromelain in pineapple mitigates effects of COVID-19

Researchers at the University of Ilorin have revealed the specific mechanism of how an active ingredient in the pineapple plant, Bromelain, works in mitigating the effects of the COVID-19  on people.

A Ph.D. researcher, Ahmed Olalekan-Bakare, gave insight  to the  journey of the discovery of Bromelain’s efficacy on Monday while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin.

Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme mixture derived from the stem, fruit, and juice of the pineapple plant. It has a centuries-long history of being used to treat medical ailments.

Olalekan-Bakare explained that Bromelain, as an antidote to inflammation, began when his Supervisor, Prof. Bamidele Owoyele suggested that his research should focus on pineapple as a possible solution to the inflammation.

According to him, inflammation is a major symptom among COVID-19 patients and the reason why patients who are seriously affected find it difficult to breathe.

“After months in the laboratory, I found out that cytokine, a chemical which is responsible for the inflammation, could be modulated with introduction of bromelain into the body system.

“Bromelain increases cytokine when it is too low and also reduces excessive cytokine to its optimal level,” he said.

According to him, this research is a breakthrough which has earned him approval for publication in scientific academic journals.

Also speaking on bromelain,  Owoyele, Head of the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, UNILORIN, described bromelain as an active ingredient in the pineapple.

“It is in the stem in large quantity. It is also in the peel and the central part of the flesh of a pineapple fruit.

“It can also help to prevent blood coagulation which is caused by cytokine and it also helps the pancreas produce enzymes,” he said.

The don noted that pineapple stem or peel could be heated in water that had not reached boiling point but water with lukewarm temperature for optimal extraction.

He noted that active chemical ingredients were often lost in the preparation of herbs because of high temperature with which extractions were attempted.

Owoyele described the Ph.D student as a hardworking student whom he had earlier supervised during his first and master’s degrees. (NAN)

Its Executive Secretary, Mr Tony Ojukwu, disclosed this in Enugu during the launch of the 2nd round of Public Sitting of the Special Investigation Panel on SGBV.

Ojukwu, who is also the Chairman, Special Investigation Panel on SGBV, said that the petition of the reported cases

He recalled that the commission received a total of 113 complaints across the six geo-political zones and treated during the first round; with South-East accounting for the highest number of 35.

He said “may I use this opportunity to commend the complainants and the public for the courage to lodge and follow up their complaints and submit memoranda to this panel in spite of some reported cases of intimidation.

“I want to reiterate the assurance of this panel and the commission’s commitment to the principles of fair hearing in discharging its functions.”

Ojukwu, however, said that the panel would adhere to all the COVID-19 protocols, in line with the NCDC directives and the recently signed Presidential Guidelines on COVID-19.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has relaunched its Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) in Oyo State and deployed 150 personnel to tackle farmers and herders clashes in the state.

The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Iskilu Akinsanya, disclosed this on Monday after reviewing the performance of the corps in the state in January.

Akinsanya said that although the CTU had been in existence for a long time, it had been under -utilised.

“We are relaunching the unit now and we will partner with the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, for further training.

“We are having about 150 personnel from this unit that will be deployed to various locations in Oyo State to tackle herders and farmers clashes, and other insecurity issues.

“They will work with the Agro Rangers, which has been upgraded; we are now into the use of electronic devices for urgent security information and not only relying on use of human security,’’ he said.

The commandant said the corps would work assiduously to ensure that the issue of insecurity in the state was addressed.

He said that the corps would create additional area commands in Saki, Egbeda and Kishi and inject fresh ideas into the divisional offices.

Akinsanya appealed to community leaders to work with the security agencies to profile people living in their communities.

“The communities know the criminals among them and should cooperate with the security agencies in fishing them out.

“Security is the responsibility of all and not for the government alone,’’ he said.

FG’s N20,000 Grant: extortion, favouratism mar disbursement – some women allege

Some women in Kaduna State have decried alleged extortion and nepotism in the ongoing N20,000 grant being disbursed by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development in the state.

The women spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Kaduna at the venue of the disbursement.

The said that unidentified persons were extorting money from some of the beneficiaries.

NAN reports that the fund was meant for poor and vulnerable women.

They alleged that most of the targeted beneficiaries were schemed out of the process, adding that those who benefitted were “mainly family and friends of the officials and politicians.’’

The women told NAN that the process was characterised by massive extortion of unsuspecting beneficiaries by unidentified individuals.

One of the women, Kahdija Ahmad, told NAN that the grant designed to give a lifting hand to some of the poorest and most vulnerable citizens was ending up in the pockets of the “well-to-do’’.

According to her, some of the women that benefited drove to the venue in flashy cars, a clear indication that they do not need such support.

Another woman, Mrs Rabi Mohammed said that the names of about 50 of them were collected and were told to come to the venue in group, lamenting that none of them received the money.

“We have been coming here every day for the past three days, with some of us coming as early as 6:00 a.m. but got nothing.

“Others will come, make a call or two and someone will come out from the hall and usher them in. Few minutes later, they will come out smiling with money in their pockets while we stand and watch,” Mohammed told NAN.

She also alleged that some women collected the money in place of other women’s names on the list, “just because they know someone in the system, and we don’t.

“We have also seen five people being given N20,000 to share, instead of N20,000 each, while some that were assisted had to part with between N15,000 to N17,000 to the persons that assisted them.”

Also, Mrs Hafsat Musbau told NAN that she sat close to some women who were mobilising desperate women to go in and collect the money under different names.

But the story was different for Adama Salisu, a 23-year-old girl from Kawo, who claimed to have received the N20,000 along with her other sisters without any hitch.

According to Salisu, I am a relation of a serving minister and our names and account details have been collected about a month ago.

Another lady who spoke on condition of anonymity said that her brother, who was among the officials helped her to access the grant.

“My brother works with them, so he managed to get my name into the list, and I got the money,” she told NAN.

When contacted, the Project Accountant, National Cash Transfer Office, Dr Ibrahim Adam, acknowledged that some persons have been arrested and handed over to the police for extorting money from some of the beneficiaries.

Adam, however, denied any sharp practices by officials of the ministry, saying that those alleging favouritism and nepotism were not on the list of beneficiaries.

He added that more than 5,000 women had so far received the grant in the state.

The official explained that the beneficiaries were selected from the 40 per cent of poor and vulnerable households in the National Social Register (NSR) that were not benefiting from the ongoing Conditional Cash Transfer.

He said that currently, only 60 per cent of the poorest of the poor and vulnerable households in the NSR were benefiting from the ongoing cash transfer of N5,000 monthly across the country.

“The N20,000 grant for rural women was introduced in 2020 to sustain the social inclusion agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The grant is part of the president’s strategy of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty,” he said.

However, an official at the programme    coordinating unit at the State Planning and Budget Commission and custodians of the programme told NAN on condition of anonymity that only 1,000 women were selected from the social register to benefit from the ongoing disbursement.

“I do not know how the officials got the remaining beneficiaries, but I know that 1,000 beneficiaries were sourced from the social register and they got their grant between Tuesday and Wednesday,” the official said.
